>> this is abc7 news. >> good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us on this sunday, august 25th. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you, carolyn. an interesting shot from the east bay hills camera. normally we would see mt. diablo in the distance, but with less of the low clouds ehave operating and we are looking at mild temperatures this morning. 67 in concord, livermore and napa. you have started out warmer due to the blanket of low and mid-level clouds. now we are looking to burn-off and mostly sunny skies for just about everyone today except right along the coast and in the north bay you will see the partly cloudy skies. 80s, yeah, there will be a few

of them in our inland east bay. but whether or not the 90s march closer to us in the final days of august, i'll let you know about that in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. we continue to follow the wildfire burning near yosemite. the fire has burned nearly 130,000 acres. it's just 7% contained. about 4500 homes are threatened. eleven were destroyed. officials worry the number could rise. abc 7 news reporter john alston has the latest on the fire from tuolumne county. >> one weapon against the fire is a pistol that shoots an incendiary device to burn the groundcover before the main fire can. firefighters were able to get water directly on flames burning within yosemite. the park remains open, but highway 120 is still closed. along that road,

small fires flared into larger ones in an instant. winds shifted every few seconds. >> i have lived here since eighth grade. >> for the first time in nearly a week, some residents were allowed to see their property. corina lowe and her brother, both originally from the bay area, lost two homes that had been in their family for years. the main house survived. >> we feel lucky to have this guy still standing, which was my family home in high school. yeah, super close call for this house. >> there are little custom houses that are cute to make this place look extra nice for guests and stuff. >> darma, who lives on the property, said firefighters did an admirable job. >> they were out here until the last second possible. we are thankful for those guys. they work hard and risk their lives to do this stuff. yeah. >> the sky was dominated by a massive mushroom cloud. the fire reached about two miles from the hetch hetchy reservoir, san francisco's main water source. officials say so far water

quality has not been affected. john alston, abc7 news. >> you can see just how much smoke is going up into the atmosphere from the fire. this picture was taken yesterday from the international space station. check out this picture. you can see how high that smoke is rising. this photo was taken from the window of a plane. the smoke is about 30,000 feet into the air. this morning the state has financial aid to help pay for fighting the rim fire. a grant from fema gives california the funds to reimburse fire fighting expenses. governor jerry brown has expanded a state of emergency to include san francisco. aces john alston mentioned, the fire is approaching the hetch hetchy reservoir and three hydroelectric power stations, two of which are now turned off as a precaution. the city is using supplement power supplies now, and that's at a cost of more than $600,000. stay with abc7 news for continuing coverage of the yosemite fire and follow us on

twitter @abc7newsbayarea for updates. this cell phone video shows a cabin being burned down in eldorado county. it's part of a 38,000 brush fire that is 70% contained this morning. that fire broke out at 3:00 yesterday afternoon, spreading quickly. residents of 80 homes have been forced to evacuate. we have breaking news out of union city where police are investigating a fatal shooting. it happened just after 2:00 this morning in the area of 11th and b streets. officers found one person dead at the scene and another person died at the hospital. oakland police say they plan to search one more area for a missing toddler. 22-month-old daphne webb was reported missing by her father in july. yesterday there was an intense search after authorities received new information.

lilian kim has the details. >> the family of daphne webb gathered in prayer before search teams headed out. dozens of volunteers and their cadaver dogs followed trails in open areas around oakland's merit college in hopes of finding the girl. she's 22 months old. >> if he found something, he would sit at the source and i would go running up to see what was there and then i would call him away because it would be a crime scene so we would want to preserve it as well as we could. >> daphne has been missing since july 10th. her father, john webb, continues to be a person of interest. he claims his daughter disappeared when he left her in the car with his 87-year-old mother. the oakland police didn't say why they are searching this spot but they say they are as committed as ever with solving the case. >> the investigative team we have here at the oakland police department, i'm pretty confident we will find out what happened

to this baby. >> there were moments of hope. search and rescue teams found shovel and a pick they thought could be related to the disappearance. police even call in a helicopter to take aerial photos of the area, but in the end they came up empty. family members are holding out hope daphne may still be out there alive. >> on one hand i'm relieved, but on the other hand we are still searching and we want our baby back. >> oakland police say there's one more area they plant to search but they won't say where or when just yet abc7 news. in developing news out of san francisco this morning, police are investigating a shooting in the city south of market neighborhood. >> it happened just after 2:00 inside a party bus located in the area of ninth and folsom streets. when officers arrived, they say nobody was inside the bus, but they found shell casings and a trail of blood. police are searching for victims and suspect. san francisco police are looking for two men after a woman was shot at a boutique dog hotel. she was working at the wag hotel at 14th and harrison streets

around 7:00 last night. police say the men shot her in the leg during an attempted robbery, then ran off. that woman is expected to recover. san jose police are investigating the 33rd murder of the year in that city. officers responded to a call shortly after 1:00 yesterday afternoon downtown near north third and julian streets. they found a man shot at least once. he later died in the hospital. a man whose dog was mauled by a pit bull is hoping the owners will come forward. it happened at a popular off leash park in san francisco's dog patch neighborhood. abc 7 news reporter nick smith has the story. >> the next thing i knew he had her pinned on her back. >> ray said he was taking his dog skyler for a walk through this park when the ten-year-old beagle and lab mix was attacked. >> within seconds she was in the pit bull jaws and the pit bull was shaking her like a rag doll. >> these are the photos of the injuries she sustained after being mauled.

deep punctures to her back and a tear on left side. a gaping wound that required multiple stitches. >> i question why he wasn't in control of his dog in the first place. >> he confronted the man he thought was the owner of the pit bull. >> they started walking off. they fled the scene. >> a witness captured the scene with a smartphone. ray filed this police report hours after the attack. the police said the incident is under investigation, and that they are working to identify the pit bull and its owner. >> i have been coming here 25 years. >> those who use the park regularly are worried it will give negative ammunition to opponents of the off leash park. >> if one child is a bully or acts out in school, it ought not reflect on the entire student body. >> in san francisco, nick smith, abc7 news. it's a rare honor bestowed on the bravest of service members. today president obama will award the medal of honor to a soldier who grew up in the bay area.

staff sergeant ty carter was serving in afghanistan in 2009 when the army said he went above the call of duty to retrieve supplies for fellow soldiers while his company was under attack by more than 200 taliban fighters. he's from antioch. sergeant carter will be the fifth living recipient to be awarded the medal of honor for actions in iraq or afghanistan. meteorologist lisa argen here now with a preview of the accuweather forecast. >> well, we have extra clouds and less wind this morning. it allows for a mild start. in fact, the clouds are burning back already. san francisco in the 60s. we will look for a nice, mild afternoon here. the heat, well, it hasn't been too hot inland. we will talk about a little bit of warmth coming your way for the week ahead. that's next. >> thank you, lisa. also next, new developments surrounding last week's alleged chemical attack in syria. what the white house is saying this morning. and emrats new zealand now just

engulfing the bridge. it's supposed to lift later today. what's in store weather-wise for the rest of the weekend and into the week? you have to stay tuned. lisa argen will be along shortly with your full accuweather forecast. >> new this morning, authorities in florida are investigating just what led a trucking company employee to go on a shooting spree that left two former colleagues dead and two others injured. according to police, 72-year-old hubert allen junior shot them yesterday at several locations around union county, florida. authorities say allen first shot and killed a 28-year-old former coworker, then went a short distance and fatally shot his 80-year-old former boss. later he shot and wounded two other men before going home and killing himself. no details on a motive. new this morning, ousted egyptian president hosni mubarak will be in court today to face retrial in connection with the killing of protesters back in 2011.

he was flown by helicopter from a military hospital to a courthouse this morning. this is his first appearance since he was released last week from prison and transferred to house arrest in the hospital. mubarak was found guilty last year for failing to stop the killing of some 900 protesters in an 18-day uprising. he was sentenced to death. his sentence was overturned on appeal. >> in developing news, syria said they will allow the u.n. to visit the site of last week's alleged chemical attacks. this morning the white house said there's little doubt chemical weapons were used by the syrian government against civilians. on "this week" chief global affairs correspondent martha raditz spoke with a former military official about what type of military action the u.s. should take, if any, to deal with syria. >> the president has said we want low risk, which really means we want low risk to u.s.

personnel. so he does not want u.s. aircraft flying in to penetrate the dome, the sanctuary the syrians have created. we will use our bombers to launch stand-off weapons well outside the missile threat so our aircrews will not be in danger and can return home safely. >> meanwhile, lawmakers are urging president obama to act quickly. the white house says the president has not yet decided how to respond. >> season may they are ready for the obama administration to intervene. >> we are dealing with a dictator never been heard of, killing left and right, with a green light from the west. the more extension they give him, the more killing he's

>> songs like blue pay your and "you are no good" won her 11 game misses. she recently spoke to a magazine saying parkinson's is very hard to diagnose. so when i went to a neurologists and he said you have parkinson's disease, i was completely shocked. i wouldn't have expected that in a million, billion years. diagnosed eight months ago, she said she's been experiencing symptoms for eight years. originally attributing her inability to sing to a tick bite, and her trembling hands to a shoulder operation. a long-time political activist, onstad announced her retirement in 2011 and focused her life on her two children. she's now speaking out on the sad reality that she will never perform again. ♪ all i'm saying i'm not ready for any -- ♪ >> that was abc news reporting. visitors heading to yosemite

can get in free today if the rim fire burning near the park doesn't discourage them. all 401 national parks will offer free admission today in honor of the 97th annual anniversary of the park service. it was created on august 25, 1916. emirates new zealand is one victory away from racing for the america's cup. the team set a speed record on the racecourse yesterday with the help of strong winds. the kiwis topped out at 47.2 knots, going nearly twice the speed of the wind. they sped away from italy's luna rossa in race 7 to take the 6-1 lead in the best-of-13 louis vuitton cup challenge. race 8 was postponed until today because of the high winds. it is scheduled to begin at 1:10 this afternoon. if race 9 is needed, that would begin at 2:10. should new zealand win one more

race, they will face oracle team's usa for the america's cup starting september 7th. >> what do you think, will the wind die down enough for them to race today. >> we will have the sea breeze. it will kick up 10 to 20 miles an hour. anything goes on the bay, i suppose. we are look at sunshine, though. in fact, really around the middle of the bay is where the fog is breaking up first. from oakland to sfo, no airport delays there. con chords look at sunshine. airport delays over an hour at the airport. we have clouds to the north. it's sunny along the central coast and also cloudy in san jose. but you can see a few peaks of the sun right here. so it has been pretty mild all night long. temperatures this morning are sitting in the mid-and upper 60s. 67 in downtown san jose. 65 in redwood city. good morning, oakland. uv a little bit of drizzle but that's about all we could make out of the system that's well overhead to the north of us. east bay hills blocking the view of mount deabably and still some fog with upper 60s in napa. a mild start up in the north bay

compared to usually the low 50s and even upper 40s yesterday. 68 in concord. feeling pretty good now. but we are looking at a disturbance that is going to mix things up a little bit today. here's the view from mt. tam. that fog. mostly cloudy this morning for parts of the north bay. but we are sunny along the coast. so overall we will see the partly cloudy skies here. mt. tam, north bay. elsewhere sunny today and the gradual warming trend after today. because today the numbers are going to come down just a few degrees. look at what's happening right now compared to 24 hours ago. that mild start with numbers above yesterday's readings, four degrees warmer in san jose, as well as fairfield and concord. so here's the system. it's a weak one, mainly impacting extreme northern california and oregon and with it we will have a little bit of a breeze throughout the afternoon. instead of the mid-80s today in our inland east bay, low 80s should do it. but should be a pretty nice

>> panda caretakers at washington national zoo will try again today to get a close-up look at the tiny new resident, a two-day old panda cub. you see the birth in this video provided by the zoo. zookeepers need to do a health check. it takes only a few minutes, but mamma panda hasn't given them an opportunity to take her cub, which is about the size of a stick of butter. caretakers want to listen to the cub's heart and lungs, take its weight, and select a dna sapp disturb collect a dna sample. >> people ran for their lives in the first-ever great bull run held in the u.s. yeah, it was inspired by the spanish spectacle. the race was held yesterday at a drag racing strip in virginia. just one minor injury to report. the run is scheduled to be held

>> welcome back, everyone. we are are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. within the last 30 minutes we've had some nice clearing in the south bay. temperatures quite mild. we are in the upper 60s already. los gatos 67. we are enjoying more sub shine in oakland. san francisco is brightening up. mild at our coast. 64 degrees. the forecast for the rest of the afternoon calls for a nice, sunny day today if you are going to be around the bay. upper 60s to low 70s. just about the same as yesterday. along the coast, kind of

to woo new space companies to set up shop here. there is currently a bill in sacramento that would protect manufactures of spaceships and parts suppliers from liability in most cases if a traveler would get hurt or killed on a voyage. several other states have already passed similar laws. >> tomorrow there will be a public meeting in sonoma county to discuss a multimillion-dollar safety project for charles m schultz sonoma county airport. construction impacts, sump as noise and traffic, will be discussed at the meeting. the $53.8 million project is part of a federal mandate to make airports safer. it includes extending the main runway by more than 800 feet, that will allow regional jets to service the airport. construction, which gets underway next month, is expected to be complete bid fall of next year. >> you know, a lot of people may in the know that thousands of children suffer with arthritis. abc7 news anchor cheryl jennings learned more about that painful

illness through the taylor family foundation, which hosted a camp for children with the joint disorder. in this morning's assignment 7 report, cheryl shows us the camp is a place where they can learn to manage their disease. ♪ this music therapy is the newest fun and creative way to help these children, who live with a life-long disease. they all have a form of arthritis, which was a shocking diagnosis for them and their families. >> i always thought it was only for old people, for some reason. but now that i have it, now i see all these kids that have arthritis. so it's kind of like changed my mind. >> my arthritis was really bad when i was young, but it's gotten a lot better. i have lupus. this is like a different version of arthritis. >> i would say arthritis is just in its simplest form, inflammation of the joint, and that can include swelling, it can include redness.

>> these youngsters are among the growing number of children who are finding their way to the free summer camp provided by the taylor family foundation in livermore. each camp is individually designed for the children's special needs. >> we work closely with the doctors, the nurses, the counselors, the camp directors, and we huddle and we meet and we talk about what does their camp look like for the best experience. >> the name of this camp is spanish for miracle. it's the only camp in northern california designed for children 8 to 13 with juvenile arthritis and related auto immune disorders. >> the model of the camp, kids get arthritis too. a lot of us don't even know that, but the numbers of staggering. 3,000 kids in the bay area, 38,000 in california, and nearly 300,000 across the rest of the country. those are just of the kids they know about. >> girls are affected more than boys. we usually see about two-thirds girls, one-third boys. i don't think they know why yet. they are still looking for a cause and cure.

>> in basketball when i jump it hurts my knees and sometimes when i shoot my elbow hurts. >> daniel is now twelve. he started showing symptoms when he was three, but nobody thought to look for arthritis. he started limping as he got older and was finally diagnosed two years ago by a specialist. >> my fingers do get sore. >> 13-year-old lindsay was diagnosed with systemic arthritis when she was three. but it took time to figure out. >> i always thought like i had bone tumors are leukemia so it was really scary for my parents. >> the kids share information about medications, injections and sad stories from outside camp because they can't keep up with school activities or because they look different. >> so what happens if you don't take your medicine? >> usually my joints will hurt a little bit. like if i write or something like that, it will hurt here.

my eyes get really red and puffy. >> it's challenging in a lot of our children facing it on a daily basis. >> i was so scared they might make fun of me, so i never said it. >> what do you want kids to know now about this disease. >> that it's really hard, really hard disease and you shouldn't make -- shouldn't make fun of people who have it. >> here kids get to run and jump at their own pace, if they are able. they also get to share something special, making friends who understand them. cheryl jennings, abc7 news. the taylor family foundation's day in the park fundraiser is today from 11:30 to 5:00 p.m. at camp arroyo. we have more information on our website under "see continue to tv." up next on the abc7 sunday morning news, it was an unforgettable moment in the civil rights movement. you will hear stories from two bay area men who were with dr. martin luther king, jr. for the march on washington with the 50th anniversary just a few days away.

the 50th anniversary of the march on washington is wednesday. but some commemorations have already again, including yesterday at the ceremony in the

nation's capitol. i talked with two men who were there 50 years ago, one a close advisor to dr. king, who was honored last week at usf, the other a well-known local activist. >> it's been described as both a protest and celebration. the march on washington, august 28, 1963, was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement. >> what did it feel like to be in the middle of that? >> it felt like -- it felt like something was going to not only happen, but that i was in it and made me realize that i was about to really make history. >> now 83 years old, reverend cecil williams said it was thrilling to be in the crowd of 250,000 moved by the now famous "i have a dream" speech. >> once that had been said and the message had begun, i said, that's it, i'm going to san francisco now. >> reverend williams had just been assigned to glide church and was moving that month to san francisco. this picture he provided shows the then 33-year-old challenging unequal education for black students in the city. he said his activism, which endures to this day, was inspired by dr. king. >> he was saying we could be better than this.

dr. king was dr. clarence jones, mlk's close friend and legal advisor. he even helped draft part of the famous speech. >> i think of the old fable. the fable says if the surviving lions don't tell their story, the hunters will get all the credit. i'm a surviving lie lion. i want to tell about one of the great lions. >> san francisco celebrated the march on washington yesterday. speakers say things have not changed in 50 years because today's struggle is still all about justice. >> because it really is about economic justice. it's about housing justice. it's about racial justice. it's about healthcare justice. it really is about justice. how can we be of service to justice today? >> members of the lgbt community, who put together the rally, also paid homage to a gay

cover along the northern coast here. but we are still looking to see the sun shine written out throughout the afternoon as low pressure heads to the north, spreading the showers to the north. we have the southwesterly flow, allowing for our air quality to be just fine. but unfortunately the fires from the western side of the yosemite valley blowing that smoke up through the northern sierra into reno. not only today, but for the week ahead. temperatures are going to be in the 70s. so kind of on the cool side but a lot of sunshine. 86 sacramento. they aren't getting the smoke either during the day. it blows away during the day and at night a little drainage into the valley allows for some of the smoke in the sacramento valley. of course, you have seen it in yosemite. back home temperatures in the low 70s from fremont. 81 concord. a little cool for this time of year out in the valleys, but a nice afternoon up in napa. 77. so you are out of the 80s today.
