now on abc 7 news at 5:00, a live report near the fire lines as the rim fire continues to rapidly grow. a look at why this is such a fierce fire fight. a sense of security shattered in an east bay community that seemed like a safe haven. the crime that has neighbors thinking twice. also, the syrian government responds to claims it used chemical weapons against civilians. abc 7 news at 5:00 starts now. >> abc 7 news starts right now with live breaking news. on edge and stressed out trying to figure out what's going on, where the fire is. >> a raging wildfire spreading fear with more people wondering if they have to evacuate. raging flames, rough terrain and today crews on the front lines face another obstacle. good evening. let's get right to the wildfire.

rim fire in yosemite grew to 200 square miles bigger than the city of san jose. flames threaten buildings including homes already being destroyed. crews are making little progress with containment now at just 7%. this is now the 15th largest wildfire in california's history. winds are a big problem today for crews fighting the rim fire. abc 7 news meteorologist leigh leigh glaser has more. >> you can get a sense, you see that fuzzy area. that's where the smoke plume is. very large. affecting even south lake tahoe, but you can see some of the convection right there. that is because of the heat of that fire. it just makes its own weather system. i do want you take you out to show you current readings. temperature right now, 88 degrees, relative humidity very

low at 17%. tomorrow highs near 90, gusts to 35 miles per hour. there is a chance of dry lightning tuesday and wednesday. here is another look at this. you can see the smoke plume. let me take you in a little bit closer, and you can clearly see just how wide that smoke plume is. so definitely creating its own weather. we had a little bit of weather here today. we'll take a look at that coming up. >> leigh, thank you so much. for the latest on the fire, let's get to john alston live in tuolumne county. >> reporter: this has been burning right along highway 120. there you see one of the helicopters that have been making water drops all afternoon. wind has been a factor this afternoon, 20 to 30-mile-per-hour gusts. that has concerned communities along the edge of this fire. if they are not fighting the

fire, they're try to stay ahead of it. crews are drawing a line in the forest trying to prevent the flames from spreading northwest into more populated areas like twain, hart and tuolumne cities. this exploded in yosemite national park. >> we'll talk about where our lines will be. >> reporter: crews are on stand-by knowing they could quickly be on the front lines. >> we are expecting a wind to push tonight. whether it comes around, we don't know. but we're planning on that that we're prepared to pick this area. >> so you are smart, you packed the cereal? >> reporter: for days crystal baker and her family have been out of their home, one of the homes threatened by the rim fire. >> right now just trying to keep my kids calm and not have them worry too much about what's going on up there and letting them know that their house is still there. >> for now she and her mother are staying in the evacuation center in the fairgrounds in sonora. 135 people were housed there

last night. >> we have little kids with us. they don't need to be there in case we have to evacuate fast. you can actually see flames from our house now. so far it doesn't go there, so far it's safe. >> reporter: yosemite national park is open, but highway 120, one of the main routes into it remains closed today and probably for some time. the cost of this fire heading well above $12 million, and this could last for several weeks. live in tuolumne county. >> the wildfire is posing a threat to the power line hs and to the water supply of the city of san francisco. the fire is now three miles from the reservoir where the city gets 85% of its water. you can see the haze in the air there, but officials report no ash in the water. today crews made some repairs and conducted a damage inspection at a hydroelectric power station in the area. the city has been able to buy additional power and use other existing splice. we'll have continuing coverage on the fight against this huge

fire on abc 7 news tonight at 6:00 and 11:00 and online any time at abc 7 news.com and facebook and twitter. breaking news in oakland where the hunt is on for a gunman after four people including a child were shot at 104th avenue and graffian street. >> we just got word minutes ago that oakland police have updated the victims. two adults and two children. they were so early in their investigation, they just gave us those updates minutes ago. the good news is they'll be okay. they have nonlife threatening injuries. this is video from the scene this afternoon at 104th and graffian. eight blocks were closed off as police searched for the shooter or shooters. they were concerned, they told me, that bullets may have

ricocheted and injured other people other than the four victims. a man, a woman, two chirngs an 8-year-old and a 12-year-old girl. police gave me an update on the 12-year-old's condition. >> nothing life threatening whatsoever. she's with her mother. everything seems to be okay. but we want to get additional information to find out how that happened. >> police are in that preliminary stage of that investigation. there's so much they don't know about this shooting, how it started, how it escalated. the victims again all expected to be okay being treated in the hospital. police have no one in custody. reporting live in oakland, kira klapper. union city police are trying to find out more about their community's first two homicides of 2013. two men died after being shot at

11th and "d" streets just after 1:00 this morning. detectives haven't said what led to the shootings. neighbors describe the area as being safe. >> it's somewhat surprising. it's not horrific, but my understanding is that ewing didn't have a murder in all of last year. that's not the reports we get out of other close-by cities. >> no arrests have been made. the alameda county coroner has not released the names of the two men who died. san francisco police tonight are looking for both a suspect and victims after a party bus shooting that happened just after 2:00 this morning south of market on ninth and folsom streets. when officers responded, they didn't find anyone on the bus but found several shellcasings and a bud trail. it's slow going today on the bay bridge. a live look at the traffic approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. there's a giants game that was happening earlier and the 49ers

picketed st. nicholas orthodox church in the castro. they want a dialogue with the church. no one at the church could be reached for comment. anti-government rebels claim 300 people died after a toxic gas attack last week. the white house says there is, quote, very little doubt that syria used chemical weapons against its own citizens. syria's deputy foreign minister denies it. >> this is a big lie. and in syria we have a responsible government, but at the same time we have irresponsible enemies. >> the syrian government accuses rebels of the attack and warn the united states not to launch any military action saying such a move would set the middle east ablaze. president obama is looking at different ways to respond to the crisis. >> bay area soldier set to receive a rare honor bestowed on the bravest service members.

>> they had a lot of wind out there on the bay. you saw those white caps, small craft advisories still up for that area. take a look at the wind speeds in a moment, but live doppler 7 hd showing you the system that moved to the north of us. some parts of the north bay reported some light sprinkles. and right here off the coast. that's helping to throw some of those clouds our way as well. you probably noticed them just banking up near the golden gate bridge as well as the marine headlands this afternoon. here is a look at those current wind speeds. sfo got up to 26 miles per hour. check out oakland. gusts to 23, we had 28-mile-per-hour wind gusts in fairfield and mountainview reporting pretty strong wind gusts well over 20 miles per hour. from our san jose cam, just a few high clouds there, but really a delightful afternoon. by the way, temperatures pretty much where we were this time yesterday. san francisco right now 65, 76 in sj. another shot from our emeryville

cam. you can see puffy cumulus clouds over the bay. 83 in fairfield and concord right now 77 degrees. from mount tam we'll give you our forecast highlights, a look ahead to the work week. partly cloudy overnight tonight. a little warming as we head through our midweek forecast. you can see the cloud pattern continuing some of those clouds moving inland. this is what's going to move in here overnight tonight. we might see a little bit of mist and drizzle mainly near the coast and lows this evening generally in the low 50s in the north bay areas, elsewhere mid to upper 50s overnight tonight. here is a look at what you can expect. tonight we'll look for the clouds to start to move inland. by 5:00 a.m. commute time, you'll notice marin county seeing some of those clouds, the low clouds all the way down towards san jose. but you'll notice that they burn back off the coast rather quickly. this is 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. look for temperatures to come up

just a few degrees for your monday. in fact, here's a look at highs, 82 for sj snl. the peninsula, palo alto, 78. we'll look for mid-60s for half moon bay. you start off with the low clouds and then afternoon sunshine. a little bit breezy. 68 for downtown san francisco. in the north bay breaking out into some 80s, 82 for santa rose is a, petaluma close to 80, we'll go with 79. a few clouds to start for oakland, hayward and midday clearing with 70s there and the interior east bay temperatures coming up a few more degrees. 85 for concord and 82 for san ramon. here's a look at the forecast. cloudy weather still on tuesday. we'll touch 90 inland. 80s around the bay, low 60s at the coast, then really not a whole lot of change, folks. your basic dog days of summer.
