we begin with the mounting crisis in syria pushing the u.s. one step closer to military action. >> as the u.n. weapons inspections team today heads to the site of an apparent chemical weapons attack, last week the u.s. was considering its military options. abc's devin dwyer has the very, and he has latest from washington. >> reporter: good morning, diana and john. that's right, u.s. officials are in the midst of urgent consultations over syria. there is a growing consensus something has to be done. as for when, one official told abc news, we're not talking about months. five days after these horrific scenes of dead women and children emerge from syria, u.n. inspectors plan to visit the site today to look for evidence of deadly poison and who may have used it. >> the team must be able to conduct a full, firm and unimpeded investigation. >> reporter: syria's government denies claims that it's used chemical weapons, but a senior white house official says there is very little doubt and that allowing u.n. inspectors to visit the site now may be too late to be credible.

>> the fact is that much of the evidence could have been destroyed by an artillery bombardment. other evidence could have been become degraded over the last few days, and other evidence could have been tampered with. >> reporter: so far, there is little concrete evidence, but officials say the number of victims that reported symptoms and eyewitness accounts make a chemical attack undeniable. the u.s. and its allies are now building a case for action including possible cruise missile strikes launched from navy destroyers in the mediterranean. >> if you could destroy his munitions, and you could destroy his fuel, you could even destroy the syrian air force if we wanted to. >> the world is a better place when the united states takes leadership. this is time for us to do this. i hope we will do it soon. >> reporter: president obama is weighing the options. he said chemical weapon use would trigger enormous consequences, but is reluctant to get the u.s. involved in another war. syria's president, bashar al

assad, this morning warned the u.s. and its allies against "meddling in his country's affairs" saying "any outside military intervention will result in failure." john and diana. >> all right, devin, a new poll examining how americans feel about military action in syria. what are the results of this poll? >> reporter: that's right. this new poll out by reuters underscores just how war weary americans are. 60% of americans oppose any intervention in syria's civil war. in fact, even if a chemical weapons attack is confirmed, most americans, according to the poll, oppose u.s. military action. john? >> all right. abc's devin dwyer live for us in washington this morning. thank you. well, a crisis reaching a boiling point here at home are those 47 wildfires raging across 9 western states. the worst of them, the fire waging on the northern border of yosemite national park. it has now grown to 210 square miles. right now it's only 7% contained. some 2,000 homes are in its path. evacuations have been under way in many communities. all weekend. >> you just cry and laugh with everybody else.

it's sad. you know, you never think you're going to be here in this situation. >> now, the fire is dumping ash over the massive hetch hetchy reservoir. that provides the water supply to san francisco. city utility officials are monitoring it but so far they say the water is still safe to drink. a couple of potentially explosive trials including one involving former president hosni mubarak has been postponed in egypt. mubarak's trial was delayed until mid-september because large amounts of evidence needs to be collected. the main charge against mubarak involves the killing of protesters before he left office. a trial for the leaders of the muslim brotherhood, who face similar charges, was also put off, that one until late october. ft. hood shooter major nidal hasan returns to court in a few hours where he could face the death penalty. now, having already been found guilty on 13 counts of murder, hasan's court-martial case moves to the penalty phase today. hasan is acting as his own attorney. he did that as the trial progressed, as well. he may be the first u.s. soldier in 52 years to be

executed in the military's death chamber. jodi arias is also expected back in court today for a pretrial hearing. the judge in arizona may rule on whether to allow media coverage in the courtroom, as well as potentially allowing information on prospective jurors' twitter accounts. the hearing could set up the penalty face for areas who was found guilty of brutally murderling her ex-boyfriend travis alexander. amanda knox will not be returning to italy for her trial. that case is set to be retried late next month. after a meeting with her attorney, they decided knox would stay in the u.s. and not attend the proceedings in florence. knox spent four years in an italian prison for being acquitted for the murder of her british roommate. and new this morning, donald trump is now facing a $40 million lawsuit over what used to be called trump university. the suit was filed by new york's attorney general. it accuses trump of illegal business practices and making false claims about classes at a school that didn't have an educational license. the lawsuit seeks restitution of fees paid by more than 5,000 people. and coming up on "good

morning america," we'll hear from the man behind that lawsuit, new york state attorney general eric sneiderman, and we'll get the latest from donald trump, as well. well, some wild stuff at the indy car race yesterday in sonoma, california. it happened in the pits. driver scott dixon pulled out, and he hit a tire being carried by one of the people in the crew. now, dixon accused power's team there of getting in his way intentionally. dixon was penalized, and power went on to win that race. all the crew members involved were not hurt. >> yikes. that guy looks like he's at least a little hurt. >> well, if he did that intentionally, i guess it didn't feel so good. >> ooh, and the tire was moving when it hit the other rubber tire. yikes. that's pretty intense. >> yeah, it sure is. all right. let's check the weather now across the nation. there will be some heavy rain with the possibility of flooding in the southwest and the rockies. some severe storms are going to roll across the northern plains. rain also along the gulf coast and in the nation's northern corners. >> it will be 87 in washington. 84 in new york. plenty of 90s across the middle of the country.

check out phoenix, only 97 degrees today. nice and cool in phoenix. mid to low 70s in the northwest. a lunch stop by president obama is getting some attention because of the tip he left behind. yeah, and a brave boy, 12 years old, he jumps into action when burglars stepped into his house. we're going to listen to his 911 call and the encourage iing operator on the other end. also, stay out of the water. a man ignored the warning signs and loses his life. we're learning more about what led up to a deadly crocodile attack.

bit of relief at the pump this labor day holiday. the average price of gas has dropped 4 cents a gallon over the past two weeks. it's 20 cents lower than this time last year. the lower pump prices are thanks to an increased output by domestic suppliers. well, despite lower gas prices, a growing number of drivers in california are flipping the switch and going electric. the tesla, that is, outselling ten different makes of car including cadillac, chrysler, audi, mercedes, porsche and bmw. pretty impressive considering tesla only offers one model, and the list price is 62,000 bucks. well, one place americans increasingly aren't taking their cars is the drive-through at the bank, and it's all because of technology. bank of america now reportedly closing some of their teller lanes as more people just using smartphone app for transactions and transfers. at the box office this weekend, another win for "lee daniels' the butler." the historical drama about a white house butler took in $17 million.

an incredibly composed 12-year-old boy was trapped in his own home when he called 911 and hid until help arrived. >> a clear-headed operator stayed on the other line during this nerve-racking burglary. abc's gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: listen closely as 12-year-old deion murdoch dials 911 alone in his port arthur, texas, home. >> 911, where is the emergency? hello. >> someone's trying to break into my house. they just broke the window now. >> they just broke the window. what room are you in? >> i'm in my mother's room right now. please hurry. >> i am. stay on the phone with me. >> reporter: the dispatcher tells little deion to go into the closet doing her best to reassure him along the way as these two young men break into the house. >> i'm going to have to whisper because i think they are. coming in. >> they are. they are inside the room now. >> reporter: then chilling silence for a full minute. >> are you there, deion? >> yeah. >> just stay there. just stay there. the officers, i think they're going to catch the guy, okay? >> reporter: when police arrive

celebration. onlookers watched in horror as the vic was suddenly attacked. australia had taken steps to protect its once endangered crocodile population which is now flourishing. . and we have some important health news this morning for breast-feeding moms worried about taking medication. in a statement just released this morning, the american ak i academy of pediatrics says that most medicines are safe to take including vaccinations and that very little of the drug ends up in the breast milk. they also remind moms to tell their doctors what medicines they're already taking including any herbs or supplements. the national zoo in washington, celebrating its newest arrival. get ready to make the cute sound. >> oh. >> there it is. a new panda arrived friday afternoon weighing just under 5 ounces. it doesn't have a name yet. zookeepers won't even know its gender for a couple more weeks but after briefly examining it yesterday, they say the heartbeat is steady and the lungs appear to be functioning properly. >> she's cute as a button. >> she is the size of a button.

>> live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> good morning at 4:28. >> thanks for joining us this morning. right to the news. we have breaking news from san jose where police sand off has ended with a neighborhood in lockdown for several hours. abc7 news reporter matt keller is on 12th. >> i was told in the after half hour the police stand off is over. they have the man in custody. the call came in at 12:15 from the man saying he was going to hurt himself. officers found him at 12th and santa clara sitting in a car. they used cell phone towers to find him holding a knife to his
