>> live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> good morning, everyone, welcome at 5:00 a.m., i am katie marzullo here for kristen sze. >> we will get you a check on the forecast. mike? >> good news. it is clear outside this morning. we have fog along the coast. we watching to see if any develops in the north bay valley over the next couple of hours. as far as our forecast, from mount tamalpais you can see sausalito and san francisco all the way down to the san mateo

bridge. we will throw the forecast up there and you can see how bright and warm it is from 82 in petaluma to 91 in brentwood and around 70 for south san francisco to 81 in san jose and along the coast we will go 62 at bodega bay to 68 in downtown san francisco. leyla gulen? >> it is quiet. we have a couple of projects lingering out there with construction crews trying to make it better in the northbound direction before the benicia bridge. at arthur road you will find three lanes blocked off and slow-and-go traffic over to the bridge and it picks up from there and highway 4 in the westbound direction we have spots of heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic and down to 38 miles per hour. and hillcrest animal it picks up to 62 miles per hour and it eases up outside and the drive into central san rafael southbound the headlights are

coming toward you and it is althoughing clear. >> coming up with developing news from the east bay, one teen is dead and two injured after a solo vehicle crash. police are trying to figure out what caused it. we are in danville with more. kira? >> just as you said, teens will wake up for the first day of school to find out that three of their classmates will not be there today and one them is dead and the other two are being treated in the hospital if broken ribs and a broken leg. look at the crash scene. this is where the so low vehicle accident happened before 9:00 last night. the car hit the tree and just blued through the fence here. we are across from crow canyon country club. this video is when the they were in the car north on the road and the driver lost control hit the

tree, hit the fences and the passenger died at the hospital and his friend, the driver, and another passenger, are in the hospital. listen to what the police chief told us last night. >> the people in the car were under age, local students that should have been starting school. >> police tell us there were no witnesses to the crash, they were out here investigating if seven hours as eric said. they do not know the cause. they say that it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were factors. they are, however, not ruling out whether speed was the cause. >> governor brown says the state is prepared to deploy additional resources to battle a raging fear. the fire is 20 percent contained and firefighters are optimistic about the new containment number although the wildfire has now grown to more than 160,000

at abc7 news bay area. >> the clock is ticking toward tomorrow night's closure of the bay bridge and looking outside at the new eat eastern span where crews are debting it to the existing bridge as drivers race to find new routes to get from one side of the bay to the other. we are on treasure island with the details. matt? >> we are less than 40 hours away from the old eastern span of the bay bridge closing down forever and that means the new span will be opening up to traffic a week from ted. caltran says that the defective bolt issue has been resolved for the new eastern span, metal plates or shims were whenned -- wedged into place and the saddles are the to reinforce the defective bolts that almost delayed the opening. >> the shims are steel wedges, like if you have a wobbly table.

we have done that on westbound and eastbound deck. the chain-cutting ceremony is at 3:00 p.m. labor day and the governor says he will not be there but anything is possible. when the original bay bridge opened in 1936, the governor shut the chain with a blow torch. after the new bridge opens, demolition of the old bridge will take a few years. >> family members of murder victims in oakland will meet with city officials today to demand better strategies to crackdown on cream. the families say city officials are not doing enough to protect the public. they plan to hold a press conference following the meeting at the lazy at 1:00 o'clock. oakland has had 131 homicides last year, the highest rate since twin -- 2006. the new compliance director for

the oakland police department earned over $300,000 a year. city officials have resolved a five-month dispute over pay and benefits. the judge appointed frazier in march and worked at san jose's police department for 27 years and served as baltimore's police commissioner. >> apple's proposed new union square story in san francisco is getting reviseed design and presented city officials with a new plan for the store that saves the fountain designed by the late artist who has died. apple revealed new plans for the store in the busy shopping area did not include the fountain and under the revised plan the found table will be moved slightly to the north and be closer to the sidewalk. >> a memorial service for the artist takes place today much the 87-year-old passed away this month. in addition to the nontable --

francisco from 55 in forest hills to 60 in the ferry building, and 58 right now at the field. in tracy it is 60 and pleasanton is 55 and through the altamont pass, the temperatures are 70 degrees. if you go up in elevation you are going to run into some warmer weather. the warm spot is pittsburg at 64 degrees and everyone else is in the 50's from 50 at petaluma and union difficult at 58, and 57 in the financial district and walnut creek is 56 and santa clara at 53 and palo alto. this is how it looks from the roof camera, quiet on the embarcadero this morning. not so gray this morning and hardly any clouds. in flight arrival delays into sfo and that 49 is going to be in santa rosa at 7:00, and the rest of us in upper 50's to near 60. it will be brighter at noon, and even to the coast at 64 and it will be warmer even the coast at 64 today, to 88 at 4:00, and 60 to 8:00, very quiet weather in

>> attorneys for george zimmerman will ask the state of florida to cover some of the $300,000 in george zimmerman legal expenses. he told a newspaper yesterday that the law requires the state to pay legal costs because george zimmermans with acquitted. after a five-week trial he was acquitted of all charges in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old trayvon martin. >> happening today on the peninsula the palo alto parks and recreation commission will consider an ordinance to make it illegal to feed wildlife and ferrell animals. our media partner reports places like the duck pond and palo alto nature preserve are off limits. officials say feeding wild live does more harm than good causing health problems, overcrowding, and impacting water quality. asan francisco public library is cracking down on bathroom conditions after an increase in complains of dirty and broken toilets.

and gilroy and most of the santa clara valley in the upper 70's to low 80's and cupertino and 78 with sunshine in santa cruz and topping out at 80 in redwood city and los altos and mid-to-upper 70's for the rest of the peninsula and millbrae is cooler as usual at 72. half moon bay is the warm spot at 67. daly city and colma at 64 and upper 60's to near 70 for downtown and south san francisco and sausalito. low-to-mid 60's along the north bay coast and inland we are in the low-to-mid 80's. sausalito is at 70 and same in richmond, and hercules is 80, those are the extremes along the east bay shore from 74 in oakland to 79 in castro valley and fremont and the east bay valleys, making it uncomfortable around antioch and brentwood with 90 and 91 and everyone else in the mid-to-upper 80's. tonight, the temperatures are in the mid-50's and near 60 and cooler in napa at 52 with a few more clouds tonight than this

morning. tomorrow will be cooler. a couple areas of high pressure keeping the storm track to our northwest the high is winning out so we will have a warm push of weather and the high will be clipped tomorrow with the morning clouds and temperatures are just a couple of degrees cooler for wednesday holding steady with a pattern through thursday and one last stand on friday with warmer weather and the low comes back and the temperatures could be from four to ten degrees cooler by none. >> let's look at walnut creek where we can see the traffic is moving pretty well coming down along 680 and it will take you nine minutes to head away from highway four to highway 24 and you can see a little bit of slowing in the northbound direction but other than that, everyone is moving at continue speeds so on highway 24, into lafayette or orinda, we have clear conditions and a slow down at 51 miles per hour approaching

>> whether you are just joining us or headed out the door, seven things to know, a teen in the east bay has been killed and two injured after the car crashed in a tree in danville. we will get more from abc7 news reporter in a few minutes. >> abc7 news begins with breakings news. a fire broke out in a two-story house on 50th avenue with flames seen shooting from the roof of the home. no one was hurt in the fire and investigators are trying to figure out what started it. >> fire officials say they are finally gaping ground on a raging wildfire near yosemite national park. officials say the fire continues to grow in size but it is now 20 percent contained. the fire has burned more than

requirement in a freeway bypass in mendocino county. the project will impact up to 80 acres of sensitive wetlands and caltran is installing drains to somebody up the drying process and packing fill dirt on top as shown in the photos. environmental groups filed suit claiming the county did not do the required environmental review of the site where the dirt is being excavated and opponents requested a temporary restraining order to stop work. a hearing is scheduled for tomorrow. >> abc7 morning news continues at 5:30 with the top story including the bay area city that could place new restrictions on some food containers today. >> three years after the san bruno disaster there is a new plan that could end up in higher pg&e bills for customers across the

petaluma and 91 in brentwood. around the bay it will be breezy this afternoon if 70 in south san francisco and berkeley to 81 in san jose and along the coast we go from 62 in bodega bay into san francisco to 68 downtown. temperatures are close to average for this time of the year. are there any other troubles to watch out for? >> minor troubles if you travel along eastbound 580 from dublin toward pleasanton this is where you find a stalled vehicle. we are seeing a buildup of traffic westbound at the dublin/pleasanton interchange and it eases up and you have clear conditions to castro valley. northbound 101 university off-ramp you will find a large tire blocking the lanes. you may run into a bit of a slow down. 101 northbound away from sfo into the city we can see a buildup as we come to the

central freeway and traffic is building a bit eastbound direction over the bay bridge. katie and eric? >> developing news from danville. police are investigating a late-night car crash that killed a teen and sent two teens to the hospital. it will make for a difficult back to school for students in that area. kira? >> a tough day, indeed, for the friends and classmates returning to high school. this is where the car crashed in a tree and plowed straight through the fence. we are across from crow canyon country club. the crash happened before 9:00 as the teens were going not. a passenger died at the hospital and the driver and the other passenger are in the hospital this morning. one is being treated if broken ribs and the other, a broken leg. police tell us there were no witnesses to the crash. they are investigating for seven

hours and they do not know the cause of the accident but say it does not appear alcohol and drugs were factors. they are investigating whether speed was the cause. >> thank you very much. new developments in the massive wide fire burning near yosemite national park. fire officials say they are finally gaining ground on the place. officials say the rim fire continues to grow in size but containment numbers are up. the fire has burned 160,000 acres since it broke out and is 20 percent contained. more than 3,700 firefighters are battling the flames that destroyed 23 structures. governor brown visited the firelines and says the state will do whatever it takes to control the fire. >> we will be ready. whatever it takes, i will make sure the resources are deployed. >> governor brown says he spoke with president obama who committed federal dollars to

battling the fire and says he could be asking the feds for additional help. >> so far so good for the water coming from the hetchy reservoir to the bay area. engineers are scrambling to pull more water from the reservoir before ash from the fire contaminates it. it has not affected water quality. the months testing the water three time as day and officials say if the quality is affected, they can get water from local reservoirs. >> hundreds gathered in berkeley to remember a city-owned camp destroyed by the rim fire. the vigil was an outlet for people to sing songs and share memories of tuolumne camp overrun by flames over the weekend. many who have been going to the catch to decades feel the loss. they will push in to rebuild. >> place full of memories. those will be with us but it is gone. >> i am going this to help. i will do everything i can.

close the bridge is to opening. you can follow us at abc7 news bay area. >> san jose could become the biggest city in the state to ban styrofoam food containers. the city council will vote on a ban today that takes affect january 1 of next year. the san jose mercury news quotes city officials as saying there is no market for recycling plastic foam and most of what is collected ends up if landfills. the restaurant association says a ban would harm small businesses more than it helps the environment. the city has been providing information to restaurant owners about alternative food containers. >> in san francisco, police supervisors will soon wear video cameras during property searches to make sure they are following the law. the pilot project comes following questionable drug raids as residential hotels in 2011. the prosecution dropped dozens of cases after footage from

hotel security video prompted allegations officers lie about the circumstances of drug searches and arrests. police were accused of stealing from suspects. the cameras the be warn on their chest. >> a nanny is accused of driving drunk picking up two young children on the first day of school yesterday. a witness told the c.h.p. the driver of the vehicle was repeatedly backing into a sign and staggering in the street. police arrested the 48-year-old nanny after she failed a field test. >> police are searching for the robbers who stole the casino winnings of a couple in pleasanton yesterday afternoon. the robbers barged in as a victim was closing her garage door and they pointed a gun at her husband and demanded "the money." he gave up the cash. the couple says the robbers wore hoodies and covered their faces. pg&e has a plan to raise rates to cover costs of the deadly

too bad. along the nimitz, the area looks clear into fremont and you can see traffic is running smoothly, and a little pocket of slowing northbound 47 miles per hour, and 680 northbound headed over to the sunol grade you have a good drive there. to the south, through san jose, you are in good shape but along highway 85 at blossom hill we have a report of a stalled vehicle and that is blocking one lane. >> thank you. next, punishment versus rehabilitation. the confrontation in sacramento over the governor's plan to keep more inmates in prison. >> the photos that police in the east bay hope will lead them to a grew of jewelry thieves.

and pounding rain and arizona monsoon season is from mid-june to the end of september and produced massive dust storms recently. >> new this morning in connecticut, back to school for students at sandy hook elementary school at a new location, chalk hill middle school in monroe. that school was renamed sandy hook after the original campus was closed following the deadly december massacre. 20-year-old atlanta shot -- lanza shot and killed students and teachers. >> there will be a rally in sacramento calling on the legislature to stop the governor's plan to expand the state prison system. rally organizers want lawmakers to reject the plan to spend up to $1 billion on private and out of state prisons and develop safe communities instead. the governor has to comply with a court order to cut the prison
