>> live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> it 4:00 a.m. on friday. we are starting early because of the bay bridge closure as we did yesterday. >> what you see tells the story. 9 bay bridge is without commuter traffic for a second morning but not without activity. crews are working around the clock to get the span ready to open. matt chemicaller has the latest. matt? >> it is 4:00 a.m. and the work continues 24 hours a day. this is the toll plaza they are working so they can put in a new drainage system. the approach from the toll plaza is almost complete but for the

repaving. 14,000 tons of asphalt were traveling on trucks on interstate 580. at peak times on the bridge there are 400 workers working in shifts 24 hour as day aiming for the schedule tuesday 5:00 a.m. opening. >> construction schedules have breathing room in case something goes wrong and a slim chance we are not going to make the tuesday morning opening but we have seen nothing to indicate that. >> the old bridge is blocking the way for the bicycle path so a thousand feet is dismantled and then the beams and bicycle bridges will be installed. weather could cause a delay on the work but it looks "favorable" through the weekend. >> our time is 4:01 and we are

entering a holiday week. how is the traffic today? >> we could see fewer cars on the road or people hit the roads after yesterday. >> it could actually be a little bit empty because folks could be taking an extra day off for the labor day holiday. it seemed like yesterday and certainly is that way today as we look right now into berkeley along i-80 both directions are moving at top speeds so not a problem. close to the san mateo bridge we are at top speed headed from hair to foster city this has been a major artery to get from the east bay to the peninsula to san francisco. if you want to take the dumbarton that is at top speed so clear conditions on both directions. outside we go you can see the oakland maze and the traffic is moving smoothly without a hitch.

that is the maze from 580. everything is at top speeds. mike nicco has the weather. >> good morning, everyone. good news. the cloud cover is not so extensive as yesterday. the drizzle is confined to the coast near the coast like san francisco. it will be a quieter commute as far as weather. downtown, there are a few stars above the embarcadero center and temperatures are warmer-than-average temperatures 85 in the north bay to 95 in the east bay valley. 76 to 86 around the bay headed from oakland and san francisco to san jose and 66 to 72 is the temperatures around the coast in san francisco. eric and kristen? >> two around-the-clock operations at bart make up for the bridge closure with trains packed during the commute.

what about today? here is katie marzullo at the embarcadero station. >> good morning, a couple of thing are happening that could mean good news for commuters, 4:00 a.m. on a friday of a holiday weekend and with the bridge closure many bart riders told me they went ahead and took the day off to make that better for them. the crowd is not too pleased especially the riders, not pleased with the crowds from yesterday. the embarcardero station is quiet. yesterday, from the east bay to san francisco it was especially packed but some said it is always like that. bart has the numbers: 61,000 extra riders between midnight and 7:00 people on thursday a total of 397,000 riders. give yourself extra time. be maybe -- be

the afternoon briefing this afternoon is at 4:30. on our website in is information on the extra service that bart, a.c. transit and the ferries provide to get you to the events over the weekend. the big event monday is 3:00 p.m. chain-cutting ceremony on the new bay bridge which will be aired here on abc7 news. >> abc7 news begins with breakings news. there was an officer involved shooting in east san jose when a robbery suspect was shot. police say at 1:00 o'clock a.m. officers spotted a car they believed was used in a robbery. they tried to stop the car the driver took off. it crashed and the suspect was shot at least once during a confrontation. he was taken to the hospital where he is being treated. >> san jose police believe a substitute teacher had thousands of images of child pornography

on the computer. he remains in jail after being arrested. the 39-year-old has worked in over grove school district since 2006 mostly at an elementary school. the arrest has alarmed parents and stunned a neighbor. >> it is not safe for the children. >> this is a shock? >> big time. big time. big time. the school district superintendent tells abc7 news there is no evidence that any of the students are involved in this case. >> we know the identity of the san francisco police officer arrested on child molestation charges in concord. 37-year-old richard hastings is accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy and is in the hands of the contra costa

district attorney. we have confirmed the san francisco police department launched an internal investigation against hastings. >> now a look at traffic on this friday morning. we hope because of the holiday week the worst is behind us. >> if it is when san mateo that is commute but if eastbound traffic is busy that is people getting out of town. >> we anticipate that it is friday and for a holiday weekend we could see heavier traffic later in the morning toward the afternoon hours. the best advise is to get out on the roads as early as possible. westbound san mateo bridge is at top speed and the dumbarton is not a problem and richmond-san rafael is clear. from vacaville we have a report of a fire slowing things down

westbound 80. from vacaville to the west you are moving just fine. no need to anticipate heavy traffic. we can see clear conditions but everyone is traveling at top speeds. we have a cool down for the forecast. mike nicco will tell us about it. >> the bridge is to or three times busier than a couple of hours ago. we are in the upper 50's at portrero hill and everyone else is 60 to 62. everyone in the low-to-mid 60's in most neighborhoods. tracy is at 66, a warm spot, and pittsburg is at 70 degrees. we are 63 in richmond and san lenadro and 64 in palo alto and walnut creek is 62 and 59 in petaluma and half moon bay the cooler spots. you can see it is quiet and fewer clouds this morning.

city council president will seven as mayor until a november 19 special election. 13 candidates have expressed their intention to run. >> now the roads for a first hand look at the commute. our engineer is on northbound 880 using cell 7 technology. good morning, dick. >> good morning, eric, northbound 880 and southbound 880 are looking good right now but the southbound direction is heavier and a good number of the cars are exiting to go over the san mateo and hayward bridge to the peninsula. you ride over 92 over the bridge and it is looking good in both directions but it is definitely heavier going westbound toward the peninsula. a lot of the cars are going to be going up 101 toward san francisco. >> thank you, dick.

>> eastbound will get busier early as people try to get out of town. leyla gulen is monitoring conditions in the track center. >> if you are making the friday get away and headed away for the holiday get an early start. you can use our abc7 news we waze app to get around the delays. in san jose we have construction although with the bay bridge construction it is carrying on headed along northbound and southbound 880 between 280 and forest avenue we will find crews and they are blocking a couple of lanes. slow if the cone zone. if it is mass transit you are taking, muni, bart, a.c. transit, and caltrain, all running on time so not a problem. here is the peak from our window and we will look at the golden gate bridge where we are under low clouds and fog and we do not have so many cars in thehbound m

sausalito and we expect that to increase as the only hours wear on. mike? >> a lot of people realize you have to pay two tolls if you go that way. >> good morning, everyone. the clouds are lower this morning and we have fog especially in the north bay half mile in napa and one mile in santa rosa and 2.5 miles in half moon bay and low clouds in san francisco and to sfo so we will watch that. hopefully, with the lack of clouds this morning there will not be arrival delays into sfo. downtown, you can see the clouds coming across the golden gate bridge and filtering into downtown san francisco. i believe today we will have quicker sunshine and it will be our warmest day of the week. weekend cooling trend will not be dramatic but each day will chip away at the warm weather. in fact, a change with a chance of storms, one commuter model of the three we use, or i use, are

looking at the possibility of thunderstorms, especially along san francisco and south on monday. something to keep an cry on during the weekend. our highs for today, mid-to-upper 80's in the santa clara valley to near 90 in los gatos and morgan hill and gilroy at 93 and sunshine and 78 in santa cruz. 76 at millbrae, and low-to-mid 80's for the rest of the peninsula and near 70 at half moon bay and low-to-mid 70's downtown and south san francisco and sausalito and mid-80's to 90 in the north bay valley and blessing the grapes today and upper 60's along the shore and 76 in berkeley and 78 in richmond and everyone else in the low-to-mid 80's loan the east bay shore and air conditioning could be running in the east bay valley and low-to-mid 90's. the seven-day forecast shows two to four degrees cooler tomorrow and again on sunday and monday a chance of a shower.

>> this is the second day without the bay bridge and we will look at a shot of the oakland maze and you can see traffic is moving slow as drivers realize they cannot take the split to the bay bridge so they have to go to the right and that is not a big problem so far. it wasn't yesterday and so for people are not too confused and we will check with leyla gulen and see if there are trouble

spots. >> they had a different type of commuter mess in new york with power cut to two subway lines in brooklyn after kittens were loose on the track. it caused two hours of delay and service interruptions. transit workers armed with cat food and crates finally got the kittens and trains were back up and running. >> now, back outside on the road, our engineer is using cell 7 technology to show us how it is looking from the driver's perspective. you were on northbound 880 a few minutes ago so if you are driving the speed limit, where would you be, oakland? >> things are looking real good here on 880 both northbound and southbound and i am actually in san lenadro right now so coming up to san lenadro and the traffic southbound is a little bit heavier and a lot of the cars are exiting for highway 92

to go over the san mateo-hayward bridge. yesterday, both for the morning drive and the afternoon drive the two trouble spots we seemed to have were highway 92 commute going to and from the peninsula over the san mateo bridge and, also, the drive through marin and especially the sir francis drake connection so we will look at that, this morning, and that is the direction i am headed right now northbound on 880. >> kristen would be in oakland at the speeds she drives. that she drives. she would be in northern california by now. >> we will now check the traffic. back to serious business. >> someone is in trouble. all right. good morning, everyone, it looks like track is starting to build and now we are seeing more cars

piling on the roads but everyone is at top speed and it looks like you are going to get where you need to be in desent time. marin county 60 miles per hour, and top speeds on the golden gate bridge into san francisco and to the san mateo we are at 70 miles per hour which is too fast, actually. it looks clear and accident-free with one stale blocking a lane. mike? >> the big story today is the warmer weather, the tomorrow that will be near or above average for all of us, three to seven degrees warmer from 72 at san francisco to 92 in concord. we still have poor air quality in tuolumne county until noon and in tahoe and reno until 8:00 this evening so if you are headed up that way, watch out
