>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this september 1st. let's start with a quick first look at our weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you. here's a look from our east bay hills camera. vollmer peak, see in the distance the low clouds, the fog. it's a cooler morning. santa rosa 54. 58 in napa with low 60s in concord and livermore coming in at 63. so there was a shower reported out toward concord at about 1:00 this morning and there's a system offshore. we will be watching it throughout the next couple of hours. high and mid--level clouds will continue to increase throughout the day. we will call it partly cloudy.

perhaps some morning sprinkles and perhaps through the afternoon more high and mid-level clouds. chance of showers not only today, but tomorrow into the labor day holiday. cooler temperatures in your forecast. >> thank you, lisa. caltrans will give us an update at 8:00 this morning on how work is progressing to open the new bay bridge tuesday morning. this is a live look across the span towards oakland from our yerba buena island camera. they said everything is on schedule to open first thing tuesday morning. a spokesman even talked about a possibility of opening sooner than 5:00 a.m. sergio quintana gives as you peak at what it's like driving across the new span. >> reporter: as crews get closer to finishing up their work on the new eastern span of the bay bridge, there are a few people who have had the unique experience of driving over the new span. chp officer daniel hill is one of those lucky driver. >> from a personal perspective

and from the perspective of a highway patrolman, the driving experience is extremely nice. >> he's the guy who has had led several media caravans over the bridge to see progress. there's only a few jobs that still need to be completed like a few patches that need to be paved. >> you would probably be driving over some rough patches, but i would say this bridge can easily accommodate traffic now. >> striping leading into the tunnels still need to be done and crews have taken the opportunity to update the lights inside the tunnels are of with leds and they are washing the tunnel. over the years millions of cars have safely driven over the eastern span of the bay bridge, but right there you see is the beginning of its end. this portion of bridge is being demolished to abolish a temporary bike lane the next three years the rest of the structure will come down. barring unforeseen delays,

who sat two hours in traffic just to check out the view here. >> we had to come from the east bay toward hayward. it was outrageous. outrageous coming out the bridge. most of the day doyle drive heading toward the bridge was a parking lot. lumbard street wasn't much better. >> we were trying to find different routes trying to get over but kind of hard not to be in the traffic at one point or the other. >> and the view from our emeryville traffic camera wasn't pretty at all during oakland. gridlock. jeff was stuck in it, returning from napa. >> ready to eat now. we worked up an appetite. i'm hungry. >> on treasure island there was a wedding reception going on. every guest got special passes to cross the deserted bridge. he was stressed hoping everyone would make it. >> what if people forget their

closer. form us -- follow bay area. this is a live picture from outside nelson mandela's home in johan ensberg. leaders say he remains in continue condition. he will receive intensive care at home from the same medical staff he had at the hospital. he was hospitalized back on june 8th in victoria for a recurring lung condition. doctors cautioned he can still be unstable at times so it's possible he may have to return to the hospital. now to the crisis in sierra. press president obama is stepping back from an imminent attack. military still ready to strike, but now the president will seek congressional authorization. we have the latest from

washington. >> president obama has been slow to march to battle, announcing he will wait for congress to vote on a military strike against syria. >> i will seek authorization for the use of force from the american people he is representatives in congress. >> senior administration officials say the president decided on friday that the u.s. should take military action against syria for its use of chemical weapons against its own people but he told advisers he wanted lawmakers to weigh in first. he later sent a formaller requesting authorization of authorization. >> while i believe i have the authority to carry it out without congressional authorization. i know the country will be stronger if we take this course. >> he surprised everyone. ships in the mediterranean sea were poised for action against

bashar assad, while anxious citizens stocked up on food. packages the congress may are war-weary, the president urged members to consider the consequences of not acting. >> what message will we send if a dick take torres can gas hundreds of children to death in plane sight and pay no price. >> he will seek international support for the strike. senior officials believe this delay will make any action stronger. abc news, washington. yesterday in san francisco dozens protested a possible strike against syria. protesters saying the u.s. does not need another war. >> the united states are claiming the use of chemical weapons by the assad regime, even though the united states

inspectors have not come out with a conclusion yet. the u.s. is trying to use the same lies of that been used in 2003 against the iraq war under the pretext of weapons of mass destruction. this is another war, ten us war on the middle east. >> the demonstration was one of many in the u.s. and europe. and including this one, about 60 protesters waving signs, marching through downtown sack hen toe yesterday, including cindy sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in war during the iraq war. she's become a well-known anti-war activist. she and others condemn the bombing of syria as the u.s. awaits response, the military action is not just in washington. coming up at 8:00, abcs" this week "brings us the very latest from inside the turmoil. don't miss "this week" with

george stephanopoulos this morning at 8:00 on abc7. u.s. supreme court justice is the first u.s. supreme court justice to perform a same sex wedding. she performed a ceremony for a friend in washington d.c. last night. this is a photo from that wedding. this year ginsburg was in the majority on two gay rights victories, including the decision to strike down california's prop 8. happening today, it's oakland's turn to show some pride, gay pride, the annual uptown pride celebration is more special this year with the addition of a wedding pavilion. local clergy will perform or preside over same sex weddings at 21st and franklin streets. you have to have a valid marriage license issued in your home county to legally get hitched. the lgbt celebration features headliners in vogue, latoya london and other local performers. franklin streets will be closed between 18th and 22nd for

>> union city officials are investigating the shooting of an armed suspect. it happened yesterday afternoon. police were called to the scene by several 911 calls from neighbors who said the suspect was shooting off several weapons. >> our officers arrived within minutes, a minute or two, on the scene and were confronted with an armed suspect. during that confrontation the officers fired their weapons at the suspect. they clearly felt their lives were in danger and other members of the community. >> authorities say no one else was injured during the incident. palo alto police have released the sketch of a man suspected of robbing two people at a post office last week. they say the man pulled a gun on a couple in their 50s. this is his sketch.

they were dropping off mail just after midnight last tuesday at the post office. the suspect and another man drove off with a wallet and cash. police are still working on a sketch for the second suspect. bay area law enforcement agencies are cracking down on drunk drivers this labor day weekend. check points like this one last night in hayward are apparently having an effect. there have been fewer arrests this year than last. santa clara county is reporting 43 fewer drunk driving arrests. the checkpoints end tomorrow at midnight. containment of the rim fire is inching up as flames are closing in on yosemite national park's famous joint sequoia grove. firefighters have been setting off controlled burns around the groves to try to clear away as much debris as possible. tourists are being warned smoke

from the fires has moved into yosemite valley. it is 40% contained. full containment is not expected before september together. 348 miles of forest have been burned. the cost of the fire has reached $60 million. it is the fourth largest wildfire in state history. >> now even though ash from the rim fire is falling into the hetch hetchy reservoir, the water remains good. the reservoir is one of the city's primary sources of water. officials are moving water into a local reservoir as a precautionary pressure. check out this time-lapse video of the fire. the clips were shot from yosemite national park and are posted on the park's u too page. we have a postal link on abc7news.com. this weekend the burning man festival is at capacity with morning 61,000 people jamming the desert.

last neat was one of the main events, the burning of the man. this is video of the annual event from you-stream. last night burning man neared it's permitted capacity. the music and arts festival was allowed to increase size this year after agreeing to new security, safety and cleanup rules. all the fun ends tomorrow. one in four products on the shelves these days is a store brand. consumer reports has partnered exclusively with 7 on your side for a report on name brands versus store brands. michael finney has the results of the taste test. >> saving money at the supermarket is no easy feat, but buying store brands can help. >> buying store brands can sava small fortune. anywhere from 15 to 30% on average, depending on the category. >> consumer reports just taste tested 57 store brand foods from five major retailers.

costco, sam's club, wal-mart, k-mart and target. plus trader joe's and whole foods. it turns out 33 of the 57 store brands proved as high quality as the national brands, although they are not necessarily identical. >> when we evaluate a store brand and say it's as good as a national brand, that doesn't mean it's a dead ringer in terms of the flavor. fact is products would be equally high in quality but maybe the store brand has different seasonings or spices. >> but target's market pantry ketchup tasted similar to hines. and listen up all you did die-hard bryce ice cream advance. wal-mart's great value ice cream came pretty close to briars, and not even that, it cost less. and when it comes to nuts, it showed all seven of the store brands were actually better than

the national brand emerald. considering many stores will refund your money if you don't like the store brand, what do you have to lose? and you could save plenty. interesting to note store brands are not always a bargain. consumer reports found five out of the ten store brands from whole foods actually cost more than the national brand. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. the first-ever red bull youth america's cup racing starts today on san francisco bay. the fleet racing will include ten teams from eight countries. two teams representing the u.s. are from right here in california. you can watch the action through wednesday from the america's cup village that's at the marina green. young sailors will race the same high-performance catamarans that are used in the america's cup world series. america's cup finals between oracle team usa and emirates

team new zealand starts next saturday. and this time last weekend, gusty winds. >> yes. sea breeze will pick up this afternoon. more clouds around the bay was monsoonal moisture pushes up into the bay area. so what does that mean, right? >> yes. >> right now it's quiet and earlier while you were sleeping it was picking up a few returns over into the east bay. we will ten to watch that. sunrise 6:40. setting at 7:38. and most of the activity will be to the east of us and the sierra nevada. but we to run an outside chance of a few showers around here with a few more clouds. from our roof camera, we do have partly cloudy conditions. san francisco 57 degrees. it's 62 in oakland. and on the peninsula mid-60s. so pretty mild with 57 half moon bay. this is a nice shot. you can see the fog here from our east bay hills camera, vollmer peak. with the fog 54 degrees santa rosa. that's the cool spot.

55 novato, and lower 60s. overall partly cloudy skies, coastal fog. we will look for this to clear. overall a partly cloudy day with cooler temperatures, a stronger sea breeze. with a chance of showered to a possibility of sprinkles tonight right on through tomorrow. and that will allow for the temperatures to continue to trim backwards or down a little bit. so the flow around the area of high pressure bringing up that subtropical moisture. you notice a few returns up in the sierra nevada. the rim fire has reported a little bit of moisture, but there's also some lightning strikes over in the sierra. but for the bay area we are looking at the cloud cover. not looking at any lightning. we go through the next couple of hours, you will notice that we are looking at the cloud cover 5:00 this morning. it stays mainly in the south bay. looks like you will see more sunshine in the north bay and here's a look if he fog along the coast. and by the overnight hours still the cloud cover keeping it mild through tonight. by tomorrow, labor day, once again we will be under partly

cloudy skies and the showers. could see some if you are headed to the zoo syria. possibility in and around the bay but i wouldn't cancel any plans. you can see the line here with the sunnier conditions up in the north bay. so this pushes on out tuesday. we will look for dryer conditions, less humidity, as well, as we head through the first week of september. 78 today in san jose. so out of the the 80s for you. 76 in sunnyvale. on the peninsula numbers will be in the low 70s from san mateo, 75 palo alto. once again, not a lot of change at our coast. we will have the fog there. low 60s and the sunset. 6, partly cloudy san francisco. up in the north bay you will see highs from the upper 70s in novato to 75 by the water in vallejo. near east bay low to i had 70s union city. you head inland, here's where the numbers will be not quite as warm as yesterday with temperatures in the mid-80s livermore. if you are headed to milbrae, a nice afternoon.

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning to you. we are starting out pretty mild with high and mid-level clouds. san francisco 60, oakland 64. san carlos cooler to the north 54. partly cloudy in santa rosa. we do have fog there. we are looking at the fog to continue to develop throughout the afternoon there. is a system offshore that will allow for some high and mid-level clouds to invade the area and even the possibility of a few sprinkles for your sunday and labor day. so here's the rest of the day today. fog is set up along the coast. a few clouds into marijuana county. also in marin county. also a slight chance of showers. we will go through the next several days and see who has the best chance of showers and

whether or not we will warm up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. this morning at 8:00 caltrans will give us another progress report on work being done on the new bay bridge. so far everything is on schedule. take a look. this is a live look from our yerba buena eye -- island camera. it may open a little earlier than the scheduled opening tuesday morning at 5:00 a.m. they tell us the bridge is already capable of carrying traffic, except for smoothing a few surfaces, painting some lane lines. today they are wrapping up their project from the toll plaza to the new span. crews still need to finish striping a few stretches leading to the yerba buena tunnel and the s-curve to the old span is already being removed. >> there won't be an s-curve anymore, but when the bridge does open up there's a strict 50 mile-an-hour speed limit there.

it will be strictly enforced by the california highway patrol. >> there's been a temporary bike lane for the new span. rest of the old steal bridge will be dismantled over the next three years. at 2,047 feet, the new bridge will be the longest self-anchored suspension span in the world. 200 steal ropes are attached to the span's main table and rode way. the main tower is 525 feet high. it's designed to move with the shaking of an earthquake. a bicycle and pedestrian path connecting it to the island will be open only partially first while they demolish the old path. many commuters have turned to bart the past few days. on friday officials say bart saw its fourth highest ridership ever. 457,000 people road bart. on thursday there were even

more. more than 475,000 people. trains will continue running around the clock until 1:00 tuesday morning. ferries were also packed again yesterday. there was expanded service to help with extra passengers heading across the bay. on thursday san francisco bay ferry estimated 57 mercer more passengers than wednesday when the bridge was still open. the bay bridge closer is having a big effect on events all over the bay area this weekend. here's are a few of the major events drawing thousands across the bay area. they include the sausalito and milbrae art festivals, oakland pride today and tomorrow's annual san francisco bike race. visit abc7news.com for a look at commuter resources on bart, a.c. transit and the ferries. you can also explore our realtime traffic maps to see the worst gridlock during the closer. check out live, streaming

individual row of our yerba buena island camera to watch the construction. as soon as the bridge opens we will notify our twitter followers. follow us @abc7 news bay area. this week there's a new option for getting around. cities now have a new regional bike share program that kicked off last thursday. >> two, one! woo-hoo! >> and they are off. san francisco mayor edison lee and others taking the inaugural spin. 700 of these distinctive blue bikes are now available to the public 24/7. at 70 stations in san francisco, san jose and other peninsula cities. >> we all the gridlock we are having, getting rid of cars is a huge deal. >> here is how it works. cyclists use a credit card to buy a membership. for a year, three days or just one. during that time they can take as many 30-minute jaunts as they

would like. if you ride longer, you will have to pay more. >> you put your key in, unlock the screen, lift up the back seat. >> each has a g. s system and other anti-theft devices. >> i think it's a good start. everything is paid for, both the bikes, the stations. >> the $11 million pilot project is funded by several agencies, including m t.c.. those who gave it a go were impressed. >> you get to see the city and you aren't always stuck in a cab, whatever, and you can stop where you want. they have a lot of stations around. >> he's from d.c. where they, too, have a bike share program. there's also one in montreal, where this couple lives. in san francisco, which sees a number of accidents, there's concern about a flood of new people on the streets. >> it's dangerous with bikes and cars on the road but if everybody would slow down and obey the rules of the road, we could all get along.

another 300 of those blue bikes are expected on the streets early next year. starting today caltrain is raising parking fees by 25%. the daily rate is now one dollar more at five dollars. the monthly parking fee goes up by ten dollars to $50. caltrain said this is the first time it's raised parking rates since 2005 and that the new fees are necessary to cover increased costs of maintaining the parking lots. well, it looks like atherton is going to have to absorb the cost of protecting president obama during his visit in april. our heed yeah partner, the san jose mercury news reports atherton's $8,000 in bills sent to the white house, the secret service and the democratic national committee have all been rejected. the city was hoping to be reimbursed for providing security, helping to, anyway, for two private fundraising events in april held on private property. on wednesday the city council is scheduled to consider the city

manager's recommendation that the city just absorb those costs. town representatives neglected to request a special event permit when the visit was being planned, so trying to recover those costs would be a legal make for the city. this morning lifeguards in southern california are warning beach-goers to be aware of sing race. 450 people were stung by stingrays in august. more than five times the amount a year ago. it can even make a macho man clinch his teeth. jimmy was showing his kids how to surf when he stepped on one. >> stepped in and came out. i'm having to hard time trying to talk because of the thousand robbing pain. >> just off my board and as soon as my feet hit the ground -- >> surfers say you can do the sting ray shuffle to prevent being stung. you kick up the sand as you walk into the water and that should

>> we all know the world is not flat, neither is san francisco, but most maps of the city ever two dimensional make particular hard to tell it a trip across the neighborhood is a casual jaunt or an arobic workout. johnathan bloom took a central with a man who is setting out to fix that. >> san francisco is a city of immense beauty and immense hills. some so steep you have to climb them to believe them. >> ready for a workout? >> yeah. >> all right, let's go. >> i don't often work out in a suit but this was for a good cause. berkeley grad student san moray has made himself an expert on the hills of san francisco as part of a project. >> you said there's a less steep route that could have been taken? >> yeah, i think it's two blocks north of here, lombard street.

[laughter] >> most maps of flat. you would never know this is a 23% grade until you got here. of course, there is google earth. >> he found there were maps but i didn't use them around the city as much as i thought them could. i wanted something simple as possible. >> what is simpler than this. >> the red leans go up and blue lines go downhill. >> the darker the line, the steeper the hill. the dollars change that you move. the hill that returns red at the bottom, reaches blue at the top. >> and it guesses which direction you will be approaching it from and it uses that to color them appropriately. >> hill mapper does a lot of little calculations behind the scenes to come up with one clear picture where all the -hills and down-hills are. in theory you wouldn't get stuck walking this hill unless you wanted to. >> were you about to walk up the

today should be a little bit cooler underneath the partly cloudy sky. the coastal fog is with us and you may run into a little bit of mist and drizzle along the shoreline throughout the take today. a slight chance of showers in the forecast for sunday and into labor day. more than anything probably just some sprinkles. so the flow around an area of high pressure to the east of us bringing up the subtropical moisture and there's a system offshore that provides the energy or the lift that could also bring us the sprinkles and light showers. so you will notice the sierra nevada the rim fire and the american fire report not only lightning but some wet weather this morning. the wet weather is the good news. the lightning, no. more cloud cover east bay. south bay and the north bay partly cloudy skies. but the fog will be with us and the onshore flow bringing the west wind 10 to 20 americans. feeling also a little more humid out there with the subtropical moisture. so here we are midnight and you will notice the cloud cover keeping us mild through the overnight hours in the 60s.
