straightly stronger breeze. concord at 61. a shower out by you earlier this morning, and we are looking at partly cloudy skies for the entire bay area today and some monsoonal moisture works it's way up from the south. it doesn't automatically mean you will see showers. mid-70s for oakland for the coast. partly cloudy mid-and upper 60s. inland stronger sea breeze allowing for cooler temperatures, mid-and upper 80s. labor day, a holiday for most tomorrow and the week ahead includes weather changes that we will talk about in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. this a couple hours at 8:00, tal transwill give us an update on how work is progressing to open the new bay bridge tuesday morning. take a look across the span towards oakland from our yerba buena island camera. it is a live look. they said everything is on schedule to open first thing tuesday morning. a spokesman even talked about a possibility of opening sooner

than 5:00 a.m. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana gives as you peak at what it's like driving across the new span. >> reporter: as crews get closer to finishing up their work on the new eastern span of the bay bridge, there are a few people who have had the unique experience of driving over the new span. chp officer daniel hill is one of those lucky driver. >> from a personal perspective and from the perspective of a highway patrolman, the driving experience is extremely nice. >> he's the guy who has had led several media caravans over the bridge to see progress. there's only a few jobs that still need to be completed like a few patches that need to be paved. >> you would probably be driving over some rough patches, but i would say this bridge can easily accommodate traffic now. >> striping leading into the yerba buena tunnel still need to be done and crews have taken the opportunity to update the lights

inside the tunnels are of with l.e.d.s and they are washing the years of soot off the roof. over the years millions of cars have safely driven over the eastern span of the bay bridge, but right there you see is the beginning of its end. this portion of old bridge is being demolished to abolish a temporary bike lane the next three years the rest of the steel structure will come down. barring unforeseen delays, there's a chance the new section will open early. >> if we can open it early, we will. there's no reason to keep it closed until 5:00 a.m. if we don't have to. but for now they are sticking to the tuesday morning deadline so drivers can plan accordingly. abc7 news. >> sergio is sharing some great photos on twitter as he gets access to the construction there. he took this picture of the demolition project underway. if you would like you can follow him on

twitter @svq journalist. travel was anything typical in other places. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard talks with drivers who felt the impact of the bay bridge closer. >> saturday night traffic on the golden gate bridge was moving slowly into san francisco. don't tell that to eric pitts, who sat two hours in traffic just to check out the view here. >> we had to come from the east bay toward hayward. it was outrageous. outrageous coming out the bridge. most of the day doyle drive heading toward the bridge was a parking lot. lombard street wasn't much better. >> we were trying to find different routes trying to get over but kind of hard not to be in the traffic at one point or the other. >> and the view from our emeryville traffic camera wasn't pretty at all during oakland.

hospital. mandela was hospitalized back on june 8th for a recurring lung infection. doctors are cautioning his condition can be unstable at times so eats possible he may have to return to the hospital. now to the crisis in sierra. precedent president obama is stepping back from an imminent attack. the military is still ready to strike, but now the president will seek congressional authorization. we have the latest from washington. >> president obama has been slow to march to battle, announcing he will wait for congress to vote on a military strike against syria. >> i will seek authorization for the use of force from the american people's representatives in congress. >> senior administration officials say the president decided on friday that the u.s. should take military action against syria for its use of chemical weapons against its own people, but he told advisers he wanted lawmakers to weigh in first.

the president phoned congressional leaders and later sent a formal letter requesting an authorization of force. >> while i believe i have the authority to carry it out without congressional authorization, i know the country will be stronger if we take this course. >> he surprised everyone. u.s. warships in the mediterranean sea were poised for action against bashar assad, while anxious citizens stocked up on food. congress doesn't return until september 9th. but mr. obama indicated that the military has informed him postponing a strike is not a problem. acknowledging that the public and congress may be war-weary, the president urged congress to consider the consequences of not acting. >> what message will we send if a dictator can gas

hundreds of children to death in plane sight and pay no price. >> he will seek international support for the strike. senior officials believe this delay will make any action stronger. abc news, washington. yesterday in san francisco dozens protested a possible strike against syria. protesters saying the u.s. does not need another war. >> the united states are claiming the use of chemical weapons by the assad regime, even though the united nations inspectors have not come out with a conclusion yet. the u.s. is trying to use the same lies that been used in 2003 against the iraq war under the pretext of weapons of mass destruction. this is another war, ten us war on the middle east. >> the demonstration was one of many in the u.s. and europe. about 60 protestters waved signs and marched through downtown

sacramento yesterday, including cindy sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in war during the iraq war. she's become a well-known anti-war activist. she and others condemn the bombing of syria as the u.s. awaits response, the military action is not just in washington. coming up at 8:00, abcs "this week" brings us the very latest from inside the turmoil. don't miss "this week" with george stephanopoulos this morning at 8:00 on abc7. ruth bader ginsburg has become the first u.s. supreme court justice to perform a same sex wedding. just tis performed a ceremony for a friend in washington d.c. last night. this is a photo from that wedding. this year ginsburg was in the majority on two gay rights victories, including the decision to strike down california's prop 8. happening today, it's oakland's turn to show some

pride, gay pride. the annual uptown pride celebration is more special this year with the addition of a wedding pavilion. local clergy will perform or preside over same sex weddings at 21st and franklin streets. you have to have a valid marriage license issued in your home county to legally get hitched. the lgbt celebration features headliners in vogue, latoya london and other local performers. franklin street will be closed between 18th and 22nd for the party that begins at 11:00. that's this morning. i have been talking a little bit about sprinkles. is that for today? >> yeah. could see a few sprinkles today. some mist and drizzle already at the coast, and also for labor day as the system sits offshore you can see the cloud cover moving up from the south. a beautiful shot from our exploratorium camera. temperatures in san francisco about 60. a little more humidity in the air today. some changes for the first full week of september. we will have the forecast coming up. >> thank you, lisa. also coming up, new details on

>> union city officials are investigating the shooting of an armed suspect. of the incident began hat at a home on bristol cone drive and bonita way yesterday afternoon. police were called to the scene by several 911 calls neighbors who said the suspect was shooting off several weapons. >> our officers arrived within minutes, a minute or two, on the scene and were confronted with an armed suspect. during that confrontation the officers fired their weapons at the suspect. they clearly felt their lives were in danger and that of members of the community. >> authorities say no one else was injured during the incident. palo alto police have released the sketch of a man suspected of robbing two people at a post office last week. they say this is the man who pulled a gun on a couple in their 50s.

the suspect and another man drove off with a wallet and cash. police are still working on a sketch for the second man. bay area law enforcement agencies are cracking down on drunk drivers this labor day weekend. checkpoints like this one last night in hayward are apparently having an effect. there have been fewer arrests this year than last. san mateo county is down 37 arrests, solano county 11, and santa clara county is reporting 43 fewer drunk driving arrests. the checkpoints end tomorrow at midnight. containment of the rim fire is inching up as flames are closing in on yosemite national park's famous giant sequoia grove. firefighters have been setting off controlled burns around the groves to try to clear away as much debris as possible. tourists are being warned smoke from the fires has moved into yosemite valley. it is 40% contained. full containment is not expected before september 20th.

348 miles of forest have been burned. the cost of the fire has reached $60 million. it is the fourth largest wildfire in state history. >> even though ash from the rim fire is falling into the hetch hetchy reservoir, the water remains good. the reservoir is one of the city's primary sources of water. officials are moving some water into local reservoirs as a precautionary measure. check out this time-lapse video of the fire. really amazings stuff here. the clips were shot from yosemite national park and are posted on the park's youtube page. we have posted link on abc7news.com. this weekend the burning man festival is at capacity with morning 61,000 people jamming the desert. last night was one of the main events, the burning of the man. this is video of the annual event from you-stream.

friday night organizers had to shut down gate entry has burning man neared its permitted capacity. the music and arts festival was allowed to increase size this year after agreeing to new security, safety and cleanup rules. all the fun ends tomorrow. the first-ever red bull youth america's cup racing starts today on san francisco bay. the fleet racing will include ten teams from eight countries. two teams representing the u.s. are from right here in california. you can watch the action through wednesday from the america's cup village that's at the marina green. young sailors will race the same high-performance catamarans that are used in the america's cup world series. the america's cup finals between oracle team usa and emirates team new zealand starts next saturday. we wish the young sailors well as they take off today.

how will the winds be for them? >> we will have all the winds up to about 20 miles an hour. marine layer is a little deeper this morning, so changes out there. later on in the day that makes for a breezy afternoon as we head outside or take a look at live doppler 7hd first. you will notice the low clouds and fog with us this morning, although it is partly cloudy in parts of the bay, making for a pretty sunrise. another 20 minutes away. we are looking at cool temperatures with the fog in the north bay. nice perspective from our roof camera. see the clouds here. temperatures from the mid-50s san francisco. dropping a few degrees. low 60s in oakland. 63. good morning in redwood city with 6 to loss got toes and 65 on the coast. east bay hills camera, there is the marine layer. and this afternoon, with that cooler air mass visiting us, a few clouds around, and that stronger push of an onshore flow. that will allow for the temperatures to be cooler today and tomorrow for labor day. 61 fairfield, as well as concord

with 63 in livermore. finally the sutro camera showing the clouds from below. cooler conditions today, a slight chance of showers and the chance perhaps sprinkles again tomorrow. mist and drizzle at the coast. you may need your wipers. the area of high pressure to the east of us breath up the subtropical moisture. there's an area of low pressure off the coast. energy providing the lift that could bring showers. the rim fire reported a few showers this morning, as well as the american fire. and also the lightning strikes not out of the question for the mountains. but we are looking at just clouds around here for the most part. hears a look this morning. you will see from the east bay to the south bay. the cloud cover. but the fog returns for the north bay and that onshore flow, keeping it cooler. partly cloudy skies and a few isolated showers are possible not only through the day today, but into the afternoon.

the morning hours on labor day, notice we have the cloud cover and the green mainly out of the bay. but still we are looking at about a 20% chance around here. so just keep that this mind. i wouldn't can tell any plans. in and around the south bay today you notice the partly cloudy sky. 81 los gatos. as much as 5 could 7 degrees cooler from morgan hill and gilroy. 76 in sunnyvale. lack for low 70s for san mateo. 62 pacifica. san francisco coming in cooler at 67. up in the north bay a little bit sunnier. mid-and upper 70s. but despite that, you will have the onshore push so it will be cooler today for you in novato. and in our east bay. 74 oakland, 75 in fremont. over the hills, yes, partly cloudy skies for you, as well. but temperatures not in the 90s here. that has gone away for the next several days. 14 in pleasanton, and 82 san ramon valley. taking you around the bay, milbrae partly cloudy skies. the art festival here.

low 70s. we have the festival up in the north bay. but talking about the game this afternoon in oakland, temperatures in the low 70s, as well. mid-70s by the afternoon. kind of breezy. coolest day of the week looking like tomorrow, labor day. then the temperatures slowly crime and we are back about into the heat by the middle to end of next week with the september fog-free weather. >> and you talked about milbrae. the folks there are expecting a larger than normal crowd, organizers said. with the bay bridge closed people are sticking close to home and aren't trying to venture out on the roads at all. >> should be a pretty day there, low 70s. >> thank you, lessa. coming up, how a glass of wine can do more than help you relax. why it could be good for your mental health.

>> a daily glass of wine could help reduce the case of the blues. research in spain found two to seven small glasses a week can lower the risk of depression. but don't go overboard. heavy drink has been relate to the a range of mental health problems, including, ironically, depression. add some coffee and you could help fight prostate cancer. scientists at the cancer research center in washington found drinking four or more cups of coffee a day can reduce prostate cancer.

scientists believe it might have something to to with some chemicals in coffee that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. >> scientists from nassau imaging say they have found a new grand can yeah in green land. it was hidden under a massive sheet of ice. they say it's 460 miles long, and that's almost 200 miles longer than the grand canyon. but the megacanyon is not nearly as deep. researchers think it's been hidden for 4 million years. coming up next, the new fees that kick in today for some cal taken riders. also a live look from our yerba buena island camera coming up. bay bridge closer and how its affecting events all over the bay area. and a new way to get around the bay. the pilot program to get more

to livermore. 53 mountain view. partly cloudy skies this morning. the rest of the day we will have mid-level clouds. there's a system offshore that could provide enough lift works some subtropical moisture from the south, to squeeze out maybe a few sprinkles, a light shower. so for the rest of the day we are calling it partly cloudy through 8:00. but yet another day to enjoy for the weekend. for most it's labor day monday. the higher clouds will still be with us as the system still sits offshore. count on a few more clouds and the possibility of a sprinkle here or there. but the forecast changes after. that i'll have a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. this morning at 8:00, caltrans will give us another progress report on the new bay bridge work. so far so good.

it may open a little earlier than the scheduled opening tuesday morning at 5:00 a.m. they tell us the bridge is already capable of carrying traffic, except for smoothing a few surfaces, painting some lane lines. today they are wrapping up their project from the toll plaza to the new span. crews still need to finish striping a few stretches leading to the yerba buena tunnel and the s-curve to the old span is already being removed. >> there won't be an s-curve anymore, but when the bridge does open up, there's a strict 50 mile-an-hour speed limit there. it will be strictly enforced by the california highway patrol. several yards where the s-curve was has been demolished to install a new temporary bike lane for the new span. the rest of the old steel bridge will be dismantled over the next three years. at 2,047 feet, the new bridge will be the longest self-anchored suspension span in the world.

200 steel ropes are attached to the span's main table and rode way. the main tower is 525 feet high. it's designed to move with the shaking of an earthquake. a bicycle and pedestrian path connecting oakland to yerba buena island will be open only partially first while they demolish the old path. because the bridge has been off-limits, many commuters have turned to bart the past few days. on friday officials say bart saw its fourth highest ridership ever. 457,000 people road bart. on thursday there were even more. more than 475,000 people. trains will continue running around the clock until 1:00 tuesday morning. the ferries were also packed again yesterday. there was expanded service to help with extra passengers heading across the bay. on thursday san francisco bay ferry estimated 57% more passengers than wednesday when the bridge was still open.

san francisco mayor ed lee and others taking the inaugural spin. 700 of these distinctive blue bikes are now available to the public 24-7. at 70 stations in san francisco, san jose and other peninsula cities. with the downtown traffic and all the gridlock we are having, getting rid of cars is a huge deal. >> here is how it works. cyclists use a credit card to buy a membership. for a year, three days or just one. during that time they can take as many 30-minute jaunts as they would like. if you ride longer, you will have to pay more. you set your key into here, the screen, lift up the back seat. >> each has a gps system and other anti-theft devices. >> i think it's a good start. everything is paid for, both the bikes, the stations. >> the $11 million pilot project is funded by several agencies, including m t.c. those who gave it a go were impressed. >> you get to see the city and

you aren't always stuck in a cab, whatever, and you can stop where you want. they have a lot of stations around. >> he's from d.c. where they, too, have a bike share program. there's also one in montreal, where this couple lives. in san francisco, which sees a number of accidents, there's concern about a flood of new people on the streets. there's no arguing it is dangerous when there are cars and bikes on the road. but i think if everybody would slow down and obey the rules of the road, we could all get along. another 300 of those blue bikes are expected on the streets early next year. starting today caltrain is raising parking fees by 25%. the daily rate is now one dollar more at five dollars. the monthly parking fee goes up by ten dollars to $50. caltrain said this is the first time it's raised parking rates since 2005, and that the new fees are necessary to cover increased costs of maintaining the parking lots.

it looks like atherton is going to have to absorb the cost of protecting president obama during his visit in april. our media partner, the san jose mercury news reports atherton's $8,000 in bills sent to the white house, the secret service and the democratic national committee have all been rejected. the city was hoping to be reimbursed for providing security for two private fundraising events in april held on private property. on wednesday the city council is scheduled to consider the city manager's recommendation that the city just absorb those costs. the town representatives neglected to request a special event permit when the visit was being planned, so trying to recover those costs would be a legal headache for the city. >> the 48th annual muscular dystrophyfy telethon airs tonight. it's being broadcast by a single network, unlike previous years where it aired on several

networks. it is the third telethon since comedian jerry lewis 45 year role as host ended. they say last year's telethon raised more than $58 million. the mda show of strength telethon is tonight from nine to eleven right here on abc7. this morning lifeguards in southern california are warning beach-goers to be aware of stingrays. 450 people were stung by stingrays in august. more than five times the amount a year ago. the sting from a sting ray can even make a macho man clinch his teeth. jimmy was showing his kids how to surf when he stepped on one. >> stepped in and came out. i'm having to hard time trying to talk because of the thousand -- the throbbing pain. >> just off my board and as soon as my feet hit the ground -- >> surfers say you can do the

>> we all know the world is not flat, neither is san francisco, but most maps of the city are two dimensional and it makes it particularly hard to tell if a trip across the neighborhood is a casual jaunt or an aerobic workout. johnathan bloom took a stroll with a man who is setting out to fix that. >> san francisco is a city of immense beauty and immense hills. some so steep you have to climb them to believe them. >> ready for a workout? >> yeah. >> all right, let's go. >> i don't often work out in a suit, but this was for a good cause. berkeley grad student san moray has made himself an expert on the hills of san francisco as part of a project. >> you said there's a less steep route that could have been taken? >> yeah, i think it's two blocks north of here, lombard street. >> why aren't we taking that route again? [laughter]

>> most maps of san francisco are flat. you would never know this is a 23% grade until you got here. of course, there is google earth. >> i found existing 3d maps a lot of fun to play with but i didn't use them when i was out and about the city as much as i thought i would. i wanted something as simple as possible. >> what is simpler than this. >> the red leans go up and blue lines go downhill. >> the darker the line, the steeper the hill. he calms it hillmapper.com. the best part is the colors change when you move. the hill that returns red at the bottom, reaches blue at the top. >> and it guesses which direction you will be approaching it from and it uses that to color them appropriately. >> hill mapper does a lot of little calculations behind the scenes to come up with one clear picture of where all the up-hills and down-hills are. in theory you wouldn't get stuck walking this hill unless you wanted to. >> were you about to walk up the hill? >> i am.

colin eller. no one would catch him. takes it 66 yards the other way, northwestern back on top 27-24. all right. in my day this was a clean hit, but now you can't leave your feet like this to hit a quarterback. chris mccain of cal gets ejected from the game. it was collin ellis again, the right place, the right time. the tip. you have to catch that or knock it down. here right into the hands of him and he goes for the touchdown. cal down 10. jared can't believe it. cal got to within seven again but northwestern puts the dagger in the heart. greene rushes in. he was from four yards out under two minutes remaining and cal goes on to to lose. 34-30, the final. a's look for their second straight win over tampa bay. rookie sunny gray on the hill. timely hitting and pitching was a good formula that kept working for the a's. members of the band green day throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. a little fireworks. another solid outing for graham. 6 2/3 scoreless, 5 hits, struck out 7. the entire offense came from coco crisp.

wait until you see the seven-day outlook. it's an about-face. but today a pretty sunrise. the official sunrise 6:40, setting 7:38. we are looking at just under 13 hours ever day light. and with the clouds around, boy, lots of pretty dollars out there, the pinks and oranges. take a look at the exploratorium camera. in the north bay it's been coolest with the clear sky in napa. 63 san jose. 55 in half moon bay. cooler day for most today. from our east bay hills camera atop vollmer peak you see the deck of low clouds up to about 1,000 feet. the mid and high-level clouds and the stronger sea breeze making for a cooler afternoon, a cooler weekend and labor day holiday. 54 in santa rosa. so far it's still clear in napa.

elsewhere plenty of cloud cover, even in concord. some clouds, 61 and partly cloudy in livermore at 63. so our sutro camera showing the little hole in the city right here. and you can see the sun. so it should be a partly cloudy afternoon. so this morning you kind of see what there is out there and this afternoon maybe some mist and sprinkles right along the coast. a slight chance are showers. that will take us through labor day. not a great chance. the best chance is to the east of us in the sierra nevada as that return flow around an area of high pressure bringing up the subtropical moisture. we've seen a few showers along the fires here. still the smoke and the poor air quality for the sierra nevada and also around yosemite. but there's an area of low pressure offshore providing the lift. the energy could bring us some light showers. but more than likely maybe a few sprinkles. this morning cloud cover. the forecast animation, of course, showing that and the low clouds and fog banked up along the shoreline. the sea breeze up to 20 americans today.

bringing the cooler air. and by the overnight hours still the mild temperatures at night due to the cloud cover. for labor day we call it partly cloudy and just a 20% chance of showers. mainly to the east and south of us. but we could see one around the bay. so just keep that in mind. temperatures with that cooler air mass and the stronger onshore push into the 70s for the most part around the by. some 60s san francisco and the 80s out over the hills with 84 in concord. 78 in san jose. cooler today by about five to six degrees from the south bay and at our beaches. plenty events going on around the bay. if you are headed to the north bay, watch out for the traffic. but the arts festival, partly cloudy. should be a nice afternoon. over into the east bay still some clouds. a little breeze out there. temperatures similar. low to mid-70s today with the outside chance of sprinkles, a light shower. the accuweather seven-day forecast trimming back the
