s >> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this september 1st. let's start with a quick first look at our weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you. halfway through our holiday weekend and changes are beginning today. you may have saw some yesterday with the cooler air mass and today even cooler. a stronger sea breeze. extra clouds and the possibility of a stray shower today through labor day. right now we are look at temperatures mainly in the 60s. pretty mild. we've had the clouds overnight that's helped keep the temperatures up in most places except up in the north bay where it's cool in the 50s, santa rosa. here's the next couple hours. notice most the cloud cover in the east and south bay, a little

bit more sunshine in the north bay. perhaps some 80s toward cloverdale. otherwise 60s and 70s for the most part. mid-80s for the inland east bay. maybe a few sprinkle. we will detail the possibility of showers and then talk about the big warmup. that's all straight ahead. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. just within the hour caltran confirmed all of the work to ready the new eastern span of the bay bridge is on track to open by tuesday morning's commute. here's a look. a project spokesman said all paving work inside the tunnel is now done. crews also finished striping the westbound lanes from the toll plaza to the yerba buena island tunnel. what is left to be done is to finish paving the eastbound lanes this morning and begin striping them. right now abc7 news reporter john alston is getting a fires hand tour of the completed work. officials hope that by the end of today the bridge will be essentially ready to handle for

tuesday morning traffic. >> we haven't run into any issues we didn't anticipate and that's why we have the breathing room. all the multitude of projects we have scheduled throughout the weekend. we aren't in danger of missing our opening time of 5:00 a.m. on tuesday. >> while it is possible the remaining work could be done sooner, he would only commit to opening as planned early tuesday morning. the s-curve approach to the old eastern span is already gone to make room for a temporary bicycle lane which is on track to open tuesday at noon. abc7 news reporter sergio quinn taken no is sharing some great photos on twitter as he gets there with the project. you can follow him on twitter at svq urinist. travel was not typical

overnight. cornell bernard talks with drivers who melt the impact of the bay bridge closer. >> saturday night traffic on the golden gate bridge was moving slowly into san francisco. don't tell that to eric pitts, who sat two hours in traffic just to check out the view here. >> we had to come from the east bay toward hayward. it was outrageous. outrageous coming out the bridge. most of the day doyle drive heading toward the bridge was a parking lot. lombard street wasn't much better. >> we were trying to find different routes trying to get over, but kind of hard not to be in the traffic at one point or the other. >> and the view from our emeryville traffic camera wasn't pretty at all during oakland. gridlock. jeff was stuck in it, returning from napa. >> we are ready to eat now. we worked up an appetite. i'm hungry. >> on treasure island there was a wedding reception going on.

followers so follow us at @abc7newsbayarea. you can check out images of progress on the bay bridge from earth cam, which shows $42,000 work hours from 2008 to 2013 time-lapsed down to about four minutes. you can check that out on abc7news.com. >> developing news. after 86 days in the hospital, former south african president nelson mandela is back he will now be treated in his own bed in johannesburg. >> he spent 86 days in the hospital behind me here bush this morning he's back at his private home in johannesburg where he will remain under the care of doctors. the president did release a statement overnight, ensuring mandela would receive the same level of care at home as he did during his long hospital stay.

he also said his home has been recon figured to accommodate his medical needs and the same personnel who treated him at the hospital will be administering his care in johannesburg. there were false reports yesterday about him being released so the actual release that came overnight was not a surprise. he has been hospitalized since june for a reoccurring lung infection. for a while there were fierce the world was about to lose to empowering figure but he has shown the same resilience and perseverance near death as he has shown throughout his life. country paused to celebrate at 95th birthday and the gates outside this hospital has been adorned for weeks in posters and pictures in his honor. mandela, throughout his health battle, has displayed grace and fortitude. we should remember mandela remains a very sick man. at this point he is in critical but stable condition. rob nelson, abc news, south

africa. president barack obama has decided the congress should way in whether congress should weigh in for a strike against the government for a use of chemicals weapons against their own people. we have the report from washington. >> the president made an impassioned case that the syrian government must be punished for using chemical weapons >> i have decided that the united states should take military action against syrian regime targets. it will not be open-ended but i'm confident we can hold the regime accountable for their use of chemicals weapons, to deter this behavior and to degrade their capacity to carry it out. >> but he isn't ready to launch an attack just yet. first he wants the green light from congress. >> while i believe i have the authority to carry it out

without specific congressional authorization, i know the country will be stronger if we take this course and our actions will be more reflective. >> the move will delay military action by two weeks or more, but the president said he has time. >> our capacity to execute this mission is not time sensitive. it will be effective tomorrow or next week or one month from now. and i'm prepared to give that order. >> it was the president who more than a year ago warned syria -- >> a red line for us is, we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving or being utilized. >> now that they have done it, he says america must act. >> we do what we say and we lead with a belief that right makes right. not the other way around. >> and new this morning, secretary of state john kerry revealed on ab cs "this week" that blood and hair samples taken from first responders at the missile attack site give new

>> veteran journalist david frost has passed away. he won worldwide fame for his television interview with former president richard nixon back in 1977. it was recorded after the watergate scandal and the president's resignation. the interview achieved the largest audience for a tv news interview in history. frost's family tells the bbc he died of a suspected heart attack last night aboard the queen elizabeth cruz ship where he was scheduled to give a speech. frost was 74 years old. ruth bader ginsburg is the first u.s. supreme court justice to perform a same sex

the justice performed a ceremony for a friend in washington d.c. last night. this is a photo from that wedding. this year ginsburg was in the majority on two gay rights victories, including the decision to strike down california's prop 8. happening today, it's oakland's turn to show some pride, gay pride. the annual uptown pride celebration is more special this year with the addition of a wedding pavilion. local clergy will perform or preside over same sex weddings at 21st and franklin streets. straight couples, of course, can also get married. you need a valid marriage license issued in your home county to legally get hitched. the lgbt celebration features headliners in vogue, latoya london and other local performers. franklin street will be closed between 18th and 22nd for the party that begins at 11:00. >> union city officials are investigating the shooting of an armed suspect. the incident began at a home on pistol cone drive and bonita way yesterday afternoon. police were called to the scene by several 911 calls neighbors who said the suspect was shooting off several weapons.

>> our officers arrived within minutes, a minute or two, on the scene and were confronted with an armed suspect. during that confrontation the officers fired their weapons at the suspect. they clearly felt their lives were in danger and that of members of the community. >> authorities say no one else was injured during the incident. containment of the rim fire is inching up as flames are closing in on yosemite national park's famous giant sequoia grove. firefighters have been setting off controlled burns around the groves to try to clear away as much debris as possible. tourists are being warned smoke from the fires has moved into yosemite valley. it is 40% contained. full containment is not expected before september 20th. 348 square miles of forest have been burned. the cost of the fire has reached $60 million. it is the fourth largest wildfire in state history. >> even though ash from the rim fire is falling into the hetch hetchy reservoir, the water

remains good. the reservoir is one of the bay area's primary sources of water. officials are moving some water into local reservoirs as a precautionary measure. check out this time-lapse video of the fire. pretty fascinating. these clips were all shot from yosemite national park and are posted on the park's youtube page. we have posted link on abc7news.com. this weekend the burning man festival is at capacity with more than 61,000 people jamming the desert. last night was one of the main events, the burning of the man. this is video of the annual event from you-stream. friday night organizers had to shut down gate entry has burning man neared its permitted capacity. the annual music and arts festival was allowed to increase size this year after agreeing to new security, safety and cleanup rules.

the festival ends tomorrow. the first-ever red bull youth america's cup racing starts today on san francisco bay. there are ten teams from eight countries, including a pair from california represent being the united states. you can watch the action through wednesday from the america's cup village that's at the marina green. those young sailors will race the same high-performance catamarans that are used in the america's cup world series. the america's cup finals between oracle team usa and emirates team new zealand starts next saturday. we hope for relatively couple waters for the kids out there today. >> a big change from yesterday to next saturday so that's all included in my seven-day outlook. we will get to that but right now live doppler 7hg showing not only the low clouds and fog are here, the sweep on top of the mount st. helena and the national weather sweep could be picking up a also moisture here

and there. the air mass will be a little muggy today as more moisture is transported to the north. they have had a lot of rain in southern california and portion of nevada. right now a look outside from the exploratorium camera that's correct view showing mostly cloudy conditions and san francisco lagging behind at 68 degrees. 62. good morning in oakland with 64 in redwood city. 67 los gatos, and another view. this is a look on top of vollmer peak. our east bay hills camera showing a little hazy out there. the clouds will rule the sky today. a stronger onshore push. 65 concord, 68 livermore. delta breeze is you up. it will be cooler in the east bay valleys. finally, isn't this kind of a neat shot? this is also look toward mt. diablo. partly cloudy skies, cooler, a chance of showers. really just about sprinkles today and tomorrow. but can't rule out a shower. you saw the flow around that high bringing up the moisture. there's an area of low pressure off the coast. combining those two elements,

allowing for the possibility of a little bit of this green making its way across the bay. 9:00 you can see the clouds around as we go through the rest of the day. more clouds in the south and east. just a little more sunshine in the north. but the fog will be a factor along the coast, transporting the cooler air. then the cooler air mass over us. you can see possibly a shower and around 80 this afternoon over into the east bay. it doesn't end there. we are still underneath the air mass for labor day. that will allow for pretty much the same story. even a few degrees cooler tomorrow. after that things really do change. 77 today under partly cloudy skies. santa clara. 81 los gatos. much, much cooler than yesterday. you probably feel it already. 9 this redwood city. low 60s pacifica. partly cloudy skies. in san francisco numbers coming down into the upper 60s. 70s south city. up in the north bay, here's where we have not only the traffic but upper 70s to near 80 in calistoga. much cooler.

a little more sun there. east bay numbers 73 san leandro. 75 castro valley. a pretty nice afternoon for all the festivities over into the east bay. 84 concord, 85 in livermore. we are looking at some of those activities right now. in fact, milbrae looking at a nice afternoon with low 70s. the art and wine festival, of course. a little breezy toward the afternoon. over into oakland this afternoon it is the a's again against the rays. low to mid-7 0s. the sprinkles chance continues into tomorrow. slightly cooler and tuesday we are back to our cleaner and dryer air mass. but it's wednesday, thursday, friday, numbers again to crank on up. it's going to be very dry, sunnier at the beaches and high fire danger by next weekend. >> we will have to watch out for that. thank you, lisa. one in four products on the grocery shelves these days is a store brand.

consumer reports has parterd exclusively with seven on your side with name brands versus store brands and the results of the taste tests. >> store brands can save you 15 to 20% on the average depending on the category. >> we taste tested foods from five major retailers. costco, wal-mart, k-mart, and target and trader joe's and whole foods. 33 of the 57 store brands proved as high quality as the national brands, although they aren't necessarily identical. >> it doesn't mean they always have the same flavor.

>> the market pantry ketchup tasted similar to hines. the mayo from whole foods, costco and wal-mart, while different from the others, was just as good quality. listen to up the die-hard bryers ice cream fans. >> wal-mart's brand came pretty close to bryers and it cost less. taste test of cash shoes showed all seven store brands were actually better than the national brand emerald. considering many stores will refund your money if you don't like the store brand, what do you have to lose? and you could save plenty. interesting to note. store brands are not always a bargain. consumer reports found five out of the ten store brands from whole foods trial cost more than the national brand. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. >> coming up, how a glass of wine can do more than help you relax.

meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning to you. we are starting out here with of 68 degrees. a different looking sky today. we are adding mid-level clouds as well as the onshore flow and the low clouds to cool the temperatures back. coolest is santa rosa at 59 degrees. a stronger onshore push by fairfield. these clouds will impact the forecast today, allowing for a muggier feel to the atmosphere. here's a look at our visible satellite picture. you notice the smoke from the rim fire here and then the rest of this is cloud cover. the low clouds along the coast. high and mid-level clouds impacting our forecast today. the coolest day of the holiday weekend tomorrow. we will have some sprinkles in perhaps as well. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. this morning at 8:00, caltrans will give us another progress report on the new bay bridge work. here's other look from our live

camera on yerba buena island. a spokesperson said all paving work inside the tunnel is now done. what is left to do, finish paving some lanes this morning and striping them. john alston is getting a first-hand tour of the completed work. have a live report on abc7 news at 5:00 p.m. officials hope by the end of today the bridge will essentially be ready to handle tuesday morning traffic. tomorrow we will see some of the celebration begin. there's an event around 4:30 tomorrow afternoon they estimate. but as of right now the official opening of the new span remains set for tuesday morning at 5:00. >> there will be a traditional chain-cutting ceremony out of the toll plaza. that will be sometime around

4:30. but that does not harold an immediate opening of the bridge to regular traffic. >> so while it's possible remaining work could be done sooner, no one is commit to go that right now. so they say plan for tuesday. demolition of the old s-curve is already done. work is underway to put in a temporary bicycle lane wishes is due to open tuesday at noon. at 2,047 feet, the new bridge will be the longest self-anchored suspension span anywhere in the world. the main tower is 525 feet high, designed to move with the shaking of an earthquake. a bicycle and pedestrian path connecting oakland to yerba buena island will be only partially opened at first while cruz -- while crews demolish part of the old bridge. many have turned to bart the

past few days. officials say more than 278,000 people boarded yesterday, the second highest saturday on record. the highest was last october 6th when there were a number of events, including the bluegrass festival, fleet week, cal football, justin beiber concert, giants baseball. that week that were 319,000 people who took bart but yesterday it was packed. ferries were also crowded again yesterday. there is expanded service to help with extra passengers heading across the bay. on thursday san francisco bay ferry estimated 57% more passengers than wednesday wishes was the day when the bridge was still open. the bay bridge closer is having a big ebe if he can on events all over the bay area this weekend. here's a few of the major events drawing thousands. the milbrae arts festivals, oakland pride today and tomorrow's annual san francisco

cities. with the downtown traffic and all the growth we are having, getting rid of cars is a huge deal. >> here is how it works. cyclists use a credit card to buy a membership. for a year, three days or just one. during that time they can take as many 30-minute jaunts as they would like. if you ride longer, you will have to pay more. you set your key into here, the screen, lift up the back seat. >> each has a gps system and other anti-theft devices. >> i think it's a good start. everything is paid for, both the bikes, the stations. >> the $11 million pilot project is funded by several agencies, including m t.c. those who gave it a go were impressed. >> you get to see the city and you aren't always stuck in a cab, whatever, and you can stop where you want. they have a lot of stations around. >> he's from d.c. where they, too, have a bike share program. there's also one in montreal, where this couple lives. in san francisco, which sees a number of accidents, there's

concern about a flood of new people on the streets. there's no arguing it is dangerous when there are cars and bikes on the road. but i think if everybody would slow down and obey the rules of the road, we could all get along. another 300 of those blue bikes are expected on the streets early next year. starting today caltrain is raising parking fees by 25%. the daily rate is now one dollar more at five dollars. the monthly parking fee goes up by ten dollars to $50. caltrain said this is the first time it's raised parking rates since 2005, and that the new fees are necessary to cover increased costs of maintaining the parking lots. it looks like atherton is going to have to absorb the cost of protecting president obama afterall during his visit in april. our media partner, the san jose mercury news reports atherton's $8,000 in bills sent to the white house, the secret service

and the democratic national committee have all been rejected. the city was hoping to be reimbursed for providing security for two private fundraising events in april held on private property. on wednesday the city council is scheduled to consider the city manager's recommendation that the city just absorb those costs. the town representatives neglected to request a special event permit when the visit was being planned, so trying to recover those costs would be a legal headache for the city. >> the 48th annual muscular dystrophy association telethon airs tonight. it's being broadcast by a single network, unlike previous years where it aired on several networks. featured entertainers include the backstreet boys, singer paula abdul. it is the third telethon since comedian jerry lewis 45 year role as host ended. mda officials say last year's

>> welcome back, everyone. it's 89:41 on this first sunday in september. this is a live look at the golden gate bridge. you see all that fog out there. but traffic moving at a very nice pace on this sunday morning. here is the san mateo bridge. traffic also doing quite well there as commuters figure out how to do without the bay bridge. what will the weather be like today? lisa argen will be along shortly with a full accuweather forecast. >> we all know the world is not flat, neither is san francisco, but most maps of the city are two dimensional and it makes it particularly hard to tell if a trip across the neighborhood is a casual jaunt or an aerobic

workout. johnathan bloom took a stroll with a man who is setting out to fix that. >> san francisco is a city of immense beauty and immense hills. some so steep you have to climb them to believe them. >> ready for a workout? >> yeah. >> all right, let's go. >> i don't often work out in a suit, but this was for a good cause. berkeley grad student san moray has made himself an expert on the hills of san francisco as part of a project. >> you said there's a less steep route that could have been taken? >> yeah, i think it's two blocks north of here, lombard street. >> why aren't we taking that route again? [laughter] >> most maps of san francisco are flat. you would never know this is a 23% grade until you got here. of course, there is google earth. >> i found existing 3d maps a lot of fun to play with but i didn't use them when i was out >> most maps of san francisco

i wanted something as simple as possible. >> what is simpler than this. >> the red leans go up and blue lines go downhill. >> the darker the line, the steeper the hill. he calls it hillmapper.com. the best part is the colors change when you move. the hill that returns red at the bottom, reaches blue at the top. >> and it guesses which direction you will be approaching it from and it uses that to color them appropriately. >> hill mapper does a lot of little calculations behind the scenes to come up with one clear picture of where all the up-hills and down-hills are. in theory you wouldn't get stuck walking this hill unless you wanted to. >> were you about to walk up the hill? >> i am. >> were you aware there is a less steep block two blocks over? >> no. >> he hopes to make it a tool for tourists, cyclists, and anyone pushing one of these or one of these. >> he learned something himself. >> the city is hillier than i thought. >> it isn't finished but he's gotten requests from bloggers and other cities to pack out cities like portland and other

>> we have another day to go in the long weekend and you are going to ruin it? >> it's doubtful. we did have a few drops of rain on the rim fire so that was good. but also unfortunately some lightning toward the american fire. as we take a lock at live doppler 7hd we have the low clouds, the fog, the higher clouds and the mid-level clouds. a stronger onshore push and some moisture moving up from the south. that's going to make for a slightly muggy feel to the day. but a cooler afternoon. here's a look at the cloud cover from our exploratorium camera.

temperatures are about a nine degree spread from the north bay in san francisco where numbers are still in the upper 50s, to the upper 60s around los gatos and san jose where they have enjoyed more sunshine and the cloud cover overnight keeping the temperatures up. texas skies in san jose right now, partly cloudy. cooler than average for the next few days before things turn around again. our delta breeze has picked up. that's always a good indicator of some cooler air headed into the inland east bay and the delta. 6 in livermore with napa coming in in the mid-60s. our sutro tower, can kind of make out mt. diablo there. temperatures anywhere from two to four degrees cooler today. we will see sprinkles more than likely. we will contrary that over into labor day. high pressure to the east of us. clockwise flow around the high bringing up the moisture. to the north and west of us is an area of low pressure.

so those two elements could allow for a stray shower. the rest of the afternoon featuring the clouds dominating the clouds throughout most of the bay. a few more areas of sunshine in the north bay. then maybe a little bit of rain here. you see just the possibility of some light shower activity through the east bay, up 80, into the sacramento valley. tomorrow, labor day, same pattern. looks like mostly cloudy skies, a little sunshine in the north bay and the possibility of some sprinkles. high temperatures today not only cool down in the bay area burks through the sacramento valley. but air quality is still a problem here with the smoke advisory and in the northern sierra. it is very gray in tahoe. not a pretty looking day there. but we are looking at more moisture in southern california and around vegas today. so as the temperatures go, they will be more in a narrow rank with mid-60s half man bay. 75 fremont. 80s return for the eve bay but

mid-80s for concord. more 70s to the north through santa rosa. it should be a comfortable afternoon, but cooler than what we should be for this time of year. sausalito, temperatures in the upper 60s to the lower 70s. a little bit breezy. you will notice the clouds around. over into the east bay, the breeze will be blowing, as well, for the pride events. and also an a's game. temperatures low to mid-70s. slight chance of a shower. we will carry that over into monday with temperatures a little cooler. the accuweather seven-day forecast showing temperatures begin to rebound sees wednesday, thursday friday, into saturday. san francisco could be well into the 80s by the end forecast week >> oh, my, what are we going to do? >> well, it is going to get toasty, but that means around here high fire danger for sure in september. so that's a concern. >> it's the time of year. all right, thank you, lisa. let's check out sports this morning. many cal fans are feeling like

2 tds. cal up 24-20. but jared did make a few freshmen mistakes. the pass tip into the hands of colin ellis. no one would catch him. takes it 66 yards the other way, northwestern back on top 27-24. all right. in my day this was a clean hit, but now you can't leave your feet like this to hit a quarterback. chris mccain of cal gets ejected from the game. it was collin ellis again, the right place, the right time. the tip. you have to catch that or knock it down. here right into the hands of him and he goes for the touchdown. second pick of the game. cal down 10. jared can't believe it. cal got to within seven again but northwestern puts the dagger in the heart. greene rushes in. he was from four yards out. under two minutes remaining and cal goes on to to lose. 34-30, the final. a's look for their second straight win over tampa bay. rookie sunny gray on the hill. timely hitting and pitching was a good formula that kept working for the a's. members of the band green day throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
