lion's den today, as he and russia's president cross paths in a few hours. >> right now, president obama is wrapping up his visit to sweden, meeting with the country's king and queen. but things could turn a lot less cordial when he and president putin arrive in the summit in st. petersburg. >> reporter: good morning. president obama arrives at the g-20, looking for political support to strike the syrian regime. one person not onboard, russian president putin. president obama and world leaders gather in russia today for the g-20 economic summit. syria is not officially on the agenda. but it's expected to dominate discussions. the president accusing the syrian regime of using chemical weapons against its own people. and is urging a strong international response. >> my credibility's not on the line. the international community's credibility is on the line. >> reporter: the crisis in syria has president obama facing off against russian president

vladimir putin. putin who backs the assad regime, says the u.s. is lying about syria's use of chemical weapons. in a rare interview with western media, putin warned mr. obama not to take military action with syria without u.n. authorization. only the u.n. security council can sanction use of force against a sovereign state. it's likely they'll exchange a few words. >> i'm always hopeful. and i will continue to engage him because i think that international action would be much more effective. >> reporter: back in washington, a small but significant victory for mr. obama. the senate foreign relations committee passed a resolution that would give the president the authority to strike syria. but it's not clear the measure can pass the full senate or house. >> i see a horrible tragedy. but i don't see that our involvement will lessen the tragedy. >> reporter: the full congress could vote on military action against syria next week.

president putin says it's too early to talk about how russia will respond if the u.s. strikes. but putin says, russia has plans. john and diana? >> tahman bradley, live in washington for us this morning. thank you. and new this morning closer to home. tropical storm warnings have been posted for puerto rico and the dominican republic ahead of gabriel. it expects the storm to curve back away from the u.s. mainland. prison officials in ohio have ordered an investigation into the suicide of ariel castro. the convicted rapist and kidnapper was sound hanging in his cell by a bedsheet. the prosecutor says castro, quote, couldn't take for even a month a small portion of what he dished out for more than a decade. george zimmerman has been pulled over for speeding for the second time since he was acquitted of murdering trayvon martin.

simil zimmermann was stopped for going 50 in a 45-mile-per-hour zone. this time, the officer gave him a $256 ticket. he was pulled over back in july was let go with just a warning. here in new york, a bizarre incident involving anthony weiner. this happened inside a bakery yesterday in one of the city's most heavily jewish neighborhoods. this is amid preparations of a knewish new year. listen to as weiner and a man get into a shouting much after the man made comments about his wife. >> that's a charming guy right there. >> why -- >> you're fine. you work out your problems. but stay out of the public eye. >> that's your judgment? >> no. it's obvious. i'm not running for office. >> you know who judges me? you know who judges me? >> afterward, the man accused weiner of only looking out for himself. weiner said he put the guy in his place. a new director at the help

of the fbi. comey was the number two man o at the justice department under the second president bush. and he was known at the time for opposing a white house push for warrantless wiretapping. comey takes over from robert mueller who stepped down after 12 years on the job. the tsa is hoping to step up the screening process for more passengers. it hopes to expand its precheck programs to 100 airports by the end of the year. the program is currently open to certain passengers, including american citizens in frequent flyer programs. we mentioned the jewish new year in that anthony weiner story. it's happening pretty soon. last night, rosh hashanah, with the traditional blowing of the ram horn. rosh hashanah is the start of the jewish holy days. it's followed ten days later by

joanna stern got a firsthand look. >> my first impression is that the galaxy gear is a fun and interesting device. it also worked really well when i got to play around with it. but i got the impression that it's a first generation device. i think the software, the battery life and the design will be improved in the next generation. >> the galaxy gear goes on sale in the united states and japan next month. the rest of the world will get it sooner in late september, with the prices starting about 299 bucks. groggy high school students who struggle to get up in the morning, have an important person in their corner. the u.s. education secretary, arne duncan, said students would learn more if they started later in the day. he's urging local districts to consider a switch. he says, starting later would increase teens' chances to be focused and concentrating to get more out of the school day. he calls the rules common sense. i agree with him. >> good idea. do you remember being 15? i could sleep for 12 hours back then. it was crazy. >> and wake up and still want more sleep. but having to be in home room at 8:15.

morning road conditions. it could be stormy along i-10, from the gulf coast to northern florida. severe weather is possible in parts of washington, oregon and idaho. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in the new orleans area, also houston. back to the news, now. and a medical alert. more than a dozen people may have been exposed to a fatal brain disease. >> public health officials in new hampshire believe one person has died of it. and they say there's a remote chance that 13 others in multiple states were exposed after contaminated equipment were used during their brain surgeries. shocked doctors are talking about the risk of infection. >> there is a very remote chance because of that, that the disease can be transmitted via the surgical instruments. after two decades of practicing internal medicine, i've never come across this disease. >> there's only about 200 cases of the disease diagnosed in the united states every year. now, to another medical scare. five california girls are recovering from second-degree burns. and you wouldn't believe what's being blamed.

doctors in fresno say the severe burns were actually caused by limes. it happened when the girls decided to make a lime and lemonade stand outside. the combination of lime juice and sunlight caused a dangerous chemical reaction, that caused blisters. but the burns took more than a day to show up on their bodies. >> my youngest one woke up screaming and crying. and there were big blisters that were growing quickly on her, all over her body. >> it's not clear if those marks will ever go away. the parents are trying to get the word out so this doesn't happen to any other kids. >> so painful. >> yeah. check out this incredible incident from australia. you can see a man there at the service station counter. he's paying for a magazine with a credit card because it turns out he didn't have enough cash. those few extra seconds made all the difference. an suv is about to blast through the store window. check that out. >> next thing you know, the car comes through. in the corner of my eye, a big bang. relieved that i'm alive.

happy to be here on earth. >> wow. the driver claims the suv accelerated for no apparent reason, as she was pulling into the parking lot. he and his fiancee there are set to be married next month. this from colorado. you see a car burning there after it had been hit from behind. then, an explosion. police say there were oxygen canisters in the trunk that went off. that fueled the flames even more. the man whose car was struck suffered a spinal fracture. the man who caused the whole thing was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. more alarming video for you. a san diego area man narrowly escaped injury after lightning struck the ground about ten feet away knocking him off of his feet. and he managed to catch the whole, terrifying ordeal on his cell phone camera. hans nansen said the clouds were rolling in. but he didn't think it was that risky. >> we weren't standing in the rain going, it's raining and thundering. we seemed pretty safe. it was blue sky above us. >> he saw the bolt of lightning

enter through his shoe. then, he noticed a metallic taste in his mouth. his friends say they can't believe how lucky he was. another heart-stopping moment as a hunting show's three cameras show a helicopter crash. there it is. a gust of wind drops the helicopter from about 150 feet to 70, sending it out of control. at the last second, it turned 90 degrees and slammed into the ground. the whole thing took less than 30 seconds. luckily, no one was seriously injured. >> that's hard to believe. >> wow. time, now, for sports. it's that time again. just 215 days since february's super bowl. tonight starts another nfl season. the super bowl champion baltimore ravens are going to visit peyton manning and the denver broncos. >> and a 16-inning marathon finally comes to an end. here's neil and stan with all of the highlights. >> good morning, america. welcome to our "sportscenter" studio here in los angeles. i'm stan verrett. this is neil everett. i want to tell you about a game that featured a lot of runs.

>> abc7 news starts right now with breaking news on the peninsula. >> one person is hurt in a gun battle in san mateo overnight in a residential neighborhood. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo is on the scene. san mateo police are laying this close to the vest. the 1500 block of lodi is closed off and it will be for several hours. investigators will be all day most likely on the street. you can see the investigation going on right now. a detective sergeant says the police department received reports of gunshots around 11:30 last night. they found evidence of a shooting including a 24-year-old victim who was shot in the torso or shoulder area. he is expected to live.
