thank you for being with us. we begin with breaking news out of afghanistan where a coordinated attack on the u.s. consulate in the western city of herat began with a truck bomb explosion followed by a furious gun battle. thankfully ended with no injured americans. all attackers killed. the taliban is claiming responsibility. according to the state department it began at sunrise, 5:30, friday morning in afghanistan when the truck drove to the front gate, the men inside opening fire on the afghan police outside the walls with assault rifles, possibly rocket propelled grenade. the truck exploded damaging the gate to allow attackers wearing

suicide vests to gain access inside the compound. all were killed by american security forces. that of course a contrast to the deadly attack on the consulate in benghazi, libya, a year ago and also fits attacks in afghanistan, while preparing for next year's withdrawal while handing over defense duties to afghans. we understand that 18 civilians thus far were injured. two afghan police. one afghan guard killed in that. we'll continue to gather details through the night. have a much fuller picture on "good morning america" and abc news.com. >> we pivot now to much lighter fare. it is fashion week here in new york. and as style watchers notice a shift in the shape of the runway models, american women may finally be seeing something of themselves. up on the catwalk. here's abc's juju chang. ♪ perhaps the only thing skinnier than the runway models at

curves. >> it seems to be getting more and more positive and less negative. ultimately it should just be an acceptance of everybody. >> reporter: jenny is part of a movement that believes the fashion industry will suffer if they continue to treat real sized fashionistas as second-class citizens. >> people who have been waiting for somebody to introduce a swimsuit model who its not a size 0. the people have been waiting for it. i am really happy to finally see it. >> reporter: after all the average woman weighs 166 pound and wears a 13 or 16. now curvier celebs, kate upton and adelle are gracing "vogue" and a new modeling agency seizing the moment. curves are in, representing real-sized models, 8 or 18. >> we are seeing new clients popping up. existing clients using plus. and seeing the day rates of existing girls going up. >> reporter: gary and jacqueline

used to run plus sized at ford in new york. >> how tall? >> 5'10, 10-12. she got offers. >> reporter: they launched jag out of his apartment to take advantage of the growing plus-sized market. >> it is overwhelming. coming in from all over the world. hundreds and hundred of wannabes. how the hell did you hear about us? >> reporter: they cherry picked 30 models they groomed and brought over from ford. this is 19-year-old madison, she is hoping jag could be her big break. >> gary and i were obsessed with her. loved her off the set. >> reporter: they aren't sure madison has the spark they're looking for. >> she is not a fuller girl. she is smaller. does have a 40-inch hip. puts her at size 10. and the fashion industry. >> reporter: the stakes are high. retail analysts expect plus-sized clothing sales to jump more than 5% a year for the next five years. at the end of the day the

fashion industry is a business. 20% of our revenue is from women who are over a size 12 and finally like, ding. >> reporter: celebrities launching their own lines of hip clothes to cash in on the $17 billion plus-sized market. >> keeps a level of class and sexy. >> reporter: retailers catching on too. high end designers, michael kors, calvin klein and vince camuto getting into the game. now with business booming, jag models finally getting their first real office. >> as we grew so rapidly we needed to get out of that environment. i needed my home back. >> reporter: two months in gary and jacqueline on the hunt for fresh faces. >> reporter: have you picked up a lot of models. >> one. >> reporter: can i see the girl? madison made the cut. >> amazing. >> exquisite. no matter what size she was. this is why jag was create ford a girl like this. this size is different than anything else. it will be exciting getting her going.

forget sharknado get ready to behold a nonfiction batnado where creepy creatures in a dank cave rush out in a whirlwind of 40 million wings. from vampires to bloodsuckers, the little guys have definitely got an image problem. as it turns out they're doing us a big favor every time they feed. there is so much more than the stuff of halloween nightmares. abc's ryan owens traveled to texas to witness the feeding frenzy. >> reporter: welcome to the batnado. that's right, a real tornado of creepy creatures, a funnel of freaky fliers that emerges every night from this cave in texas. look at that. and you feel the wind. wow, look at them. >> we are in the middle of it right now. >> reporter: you are watching 20 million, yes, 20 million mexican

free-tail bats whirl their way out of the single cave to hunt for food. >> the way that they're climbing up out of the hole. gaining altitude. like an airplane. gaining altitude. get up. you can see they keep their form. go off into a river off, 30 miles away. out to eat. 100 tons of bugs every night. >> reporter: our guide for this tour of the bracken bat wave north of san antonio is casey anderson, host of america the wild, on national wild. i love tracking predators. >> reporter: this guy has traveled the world and seen some of the most dangerous animals. and says he has never seen anything like this. >> it is the largest concentration of mammals on the planet. it its overwhelming to be, amongst all these bats. >> reporter: so many bats make the journey together every night. they even show up on the local radar. as many as we are seeing right now, this goes on for hours and

hours just a steady stream. >> yeah, this massive flow will go on for three hours sometimes. it just shows you how many bats are in that, in that cave. it's -- it's, blows my mind. >> reporter: as close as we are here, you are telling me i am in no danger if one hit me in the head? >> no, only thing you are in danger of. you might feel look you are getting rained on. that's not rain. >> that's danger to me, let's be very clear we couldn't go in the cave from the dangerous level of c 02 from the bat's guano. casey did go inside a similar cave and it was truly the stuff of nightmares. >> tell you what being here in the dark and having all the bugs falling from the ceiling. it is a little freaky. >> reporter: he argues despite all the childhood nightmares and cheesy horror movies like the aptly named "bats." we really should like them. >> nothing to fear here.

bats are super essential to every eco system they're part of. in fact they're actually our best friends. >> middle of the summer. hot here in texas. people think there are a lot of bugs now. if we didn't have these guys we would been real trouble. >> i've couldn't iffage aimagi balts were -- bats were gone. we would live in a world covered by bugs. that's to me something to beafraid of. >> scarier than the bats? >> absolutely. >> reporter: turns out the bats have a lot to be afraid of. as the we waited for them to emerge that night. we noticed skunks and raccoons gathering at the entrance hoping a couple of the 20 million fall out of the sky. snakes show up at the buffet too. they don't always wait for the bats to hit the ground. matt caught this snake snag one out of the air. got one. he got one right there. even if the bats make it high in the air. there is a predator waiting for them. check out this hawk. >> dinner time.

>> that's not to say some bats aren't scary. casey want to southern mexico in search of vampire bats. yes, they do exist. and just like dracula, they only eat one thing. >> what a weird animal in the sense that is the only thing they eat blood. truly. it's like the horror movies. but they don't look human blood. in fact they're usually eating livestock or wild animals out there, the blood they prefer. >> reporter: there is something else vampire bats like. the heat. so for now they're only blood sucking way down in mexico. >> there is some speculation as the the climate changes many species are going to start moving around. there is indications that vampire bats are coming north. you know? here texas is cattle country. plenty of food for the bats to eat. it could happen. >> reporter: until then, let's enjoy the harmless variety. there is something mesmerizing about watching the animals leave the so-called bat nado and trail

off on their nightly commute. almost like they're on board a train we can't see. >> i think this is absolutely beautiful. if that was -- bird. people would love it. but it's not. it's bats. but i think it is equally as beautiful. maybe in some way a little more important. >> reporter: their commute is a long one. they fly as far as 30 miles in search of the insects. they return just before sunrise. cramming 20 million bats back into the cave is something to see too. >> there is like an odd ballet to this. can't believe i am using the word. >> i think you are spot on. ballet. >> in respect to bats. >> 20 million of anything. in sync. not bumping into each other verycvery much. that is a dance they do every night to get where they need to go. the night time is the right time for the bat. >> reporter: one of the greatest shows on earth courtesy of mother nature. i'm ryan owens for "nightline"

>> in tonight's "feed frenzy" after a couple days of rain, an epic downpour last night in boulder, colorado. and then it poured all through the night. an inch an hour at times. dropped so thick that one boulder student said they felt like hail all of it elevated boulder creek into a muddy torrent. flowing at 16 times its normal rate. all of it overwhelming dams designed to protect and turning rootdz into raging rivers. while rescue helicopters were grounded, there was one spectacular rescue in the middle of this road. three cars in the rushing water. two drivers have been saved. one car flipped. the man inside trapped in the water for an hour. rescuers attached cables to pull the car upright and break the
