good morning, everyone. i'm katie marzullo. we want to start you off with a quick first look at the weather. here's francis. >> good morning, everyone. here's a live look out towards mt. diablo. the sunshine is in the higher elevations. eventually all of us will get to see the sunshine. but for the morning, we're starting off with cloudy conditions, even a bit of some drizzle the closer you are to the coast, the more likely you'll see that. temperatures in the mid-50s to low 60s. lots of sunshine for most everyone. mild to warm temperatures. mid-60s near the coast to upper 80s inland. this evening, the clouds return again.

by 7:00 tonight, we'll drop down into the upper 50s to low 70s. there is a chance of rain in the forecast. >> francis, thank you. this morning, oakland police are searching for a gunman who opened fire on a downtown hotel wounding a cab driver. we were there when the shots rang out in front of the marriott. the hotel is hosting the ohio state football team in town to play cal. alan wang has more. >> reporter: shots rang out just as an abc sports anchor was about to go live in front of the marriott hotel in oakland. police think this man may be a suspe suspect. it happened around 3:00. and ohio state football fans dressed in red arrived to a crime scene outside their hotel, where the buckeye football team is also staying.

witnesses said two shooters were firing at each other and a stray bullet struck a cab driver at the hotel taxi stand. >> he was standing right next to me. i heard the shots and i went down right here by the tire. he was screaming, call 911, i got shot. >> reporter: witnesses say the cab driver was standing right in this spot when the bullets rang out from broadway street. they say he turned around to run and was shot in the back of the thigh. one of the bullets struck the wall right here. there are at least three other bullet holes on the side of the marriott. but the buckeye fans we spoke to seemed unfazed. >> it's like any city, anyplace, it can happen anyplace. >> it's the unfortunate state of our culture. but it can happen anywhere, anytime. >> reporter: still police say shootings are rare in the heart of downtown oakland. now they're examining hotel surveillance cameras trying to identify the suspects. in oakland, alan wang, abc 7

news. new this morning, police in antioch are investigating a car crash that killed a teenager and injured a second person. it happened after 7:00 on hillcrest avenue and sterling hill drive. authorities say a car hit a curb and slammed into a tree. a teenager inside that vehicle is believed to be under 18 died at the scene. the second person was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the cause of the crash is not known but investigators believe speed may have been a factor. a fremont police who was responding to a call rammed into a motorcyclist and injured the rider who also works for the fremont police department. this happened about a block from american high school on fremont boulevard. abc 7 news anchor ama daetz has more. >> reporter: tow truck operators struggled to remove a motorcycle embedded in the front end of a police cruiser. the accident happened gist before 4:00 p.m. as the officer was responding to a nonemergency

call. >> the police car struck the back of the motorcycle. the motorcycle rider was thrown to the ground and impacted the back of the truck. >> reporter: the 6 year veteran of the police department hit a fellow employee, a 29-year-old woman who's worked for the department for about 18 months. >> it was scary. but there was radiator fluid dripping everywhere. >> reporter: she saw the woman lying on the ground. >> we department see any blood so we assumed that she was physically okay. they did take off her helmet after the paramedics arrived and she was moving her fingers and her hands. >> reporter: the woman was taken to the hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. the pick-up truck driver and the officer were not hurt. in fremont, ama daetz, abc 7 news. transit police in oakland are investigating a collision between a bus and a car. there were three family members inside that car. it happened just before 7:00 last night at the intersection

of fifth and brush streets. a paratransit bus was involved. >> i was in the passenger side of the car. when the light turned green, she went. cab blew the red light. nailed us. car spun around a couple of times. stopped. kid was screaming. >> the driver of the car said the bus driver came to her and apologized. the couple's 7-year-old daughter was taken to the hospital for observation. this morning, there's a warning for students and staff at stanford after a woman was tackled while jogging on campus. she was running on the path tuesday night. just before 9:00, a man grabbed her and pulled her to the ground but the woman managed to get away. the police say the suspect is 5'6" and was wearing dark pants and a dark sweatshirt. a manhunt is under way in el

cerrito. this attack happened monday night before 7:00. the victim was walking under the el cerrito b.a.r.t. station. police say the man in this sketch punched the victim in the head and pinned her arms against her body. a resident heard the victim scream and scared off the attackers. he's described as in his 20s. a fund-raiser will be held to benefit the mother of an el sobrante child who was killed. our media partner reports today's fund-raiser will be held at ranchos sports bar from noon till 4:00. closing arguments will begin

on monday in the penalty phase of the trial of convicted serial killer joseph naso. yesterday jurors heard from one of naso's former modeling clients. she says she believes he's guilty but does not think he should get the death penalty. he was convicted for killing four women in the 1970s and 1990s. if the jury is not unanimous on the death penalty, he'll receive life in prison without parole. not since the b.a.r.t. strike of 1979 have managers taken control of the trains. now b.a.r.t. officials say that's one of the options they're considering if b.a.r.t. workers strike next month. >> reporter: the back-up heading to the bay bridge has been extending well into the night lightly and for drivers stuck in the afternoon commute, the prospect of another b.a.r.t. strike is unsettling. >> you couldn't get out of the building. took 10, 15 minutes just to get out of the parking garage when

b.a.r.t. wasn't working. >> if there is a lengthy strike, we think the public is going to look at b.a.r.t. and say, what are you doing to try to provide some type of skeletal train service. we want to be able to present to our board an option that includes limited service. >> reporter: that hasn't happened since 1979. back then, trains with managers at the controls got rolling in the last weeks of a three-month strike. almost immediately after b.a.r.t. management raised that option, union leaders quickly raised warning flags. >> i would be extremely concerned if they're thinking about having managers running trains. the passengers' safety is paramount and that would be compromised if they chose to do that. >> reporter: training behind the train starts four months. b.a.r.t. is also looking to charter more buses than were used during the four-day strike earlier this summer. but b.a.r.t. managers are making

contingency plans and they're hoping commuters are, too. >> we really encourage people to plan ahead, to think about c carpooling. >> reporter: they return to the bargaining table on monday to begin talks on salary. >> drivers in san francisco will have to deal with an extra traffic headache. the on-ramp will be closed starting at 8:00 p.m. and will reopen before the morning commute. a life-saving warning system is back up and running in san mateo county. the sirens have been down for more than a month. work to upgrade the system began in august. but then things had to be sped up after officials discovered only three of the eight sirens were working properly. the new system is able to broadcast voice messages instead of just a siren. the tsunami alert system covers a 30-mile stretch.

oakland city officials and the alameda county sheriff, it's a story you'll only see here. sky 7 hd was there yesterday morning as sheriff's deputies served the eviction. the city plans to build a new state-of-the-art truck service center on the land. city officials say the business was given two weeks' notice to move and the owner agreed to be out by july. the owner says the city never gave him specifics until thursday. this morning, cal fire officials say full containment of the morgan fire is expected by 6:00 tonight. crews are still mopping up and patrolling the fire perimeter on mt. diablo. it is 95% contained right now. authorities believe the fire was started by target shooting on sunday afternoon. it's burned more than 3,100 acres. but no structures were destroyed. officials say the firefight cost

welcome back, everyone. it's 8:14 on your saturday morning. this is the view from our emeryville cam. looking pretty gray out there this morning. definitely low clouds. 58 degrees in emeryville. but it will clear and temperatures will get up into the 70s in the afternoon. frances dinglasan will have more on your forecast coming up in just a little bit. meanwhile, we have developing news. at least 34 people are hurt after a greyhound bus overturned in ohio this morning. it happened around 4:00 eastern

time, about 26 miles north of cincinnati. the bus was carrying 52 people and was on its way to detroit. police say injuries range from minor to severe. no word yet on what caused the crash. to what's being called biblical flooding across colorado that's left at least four people dead and more than 200 people unaccounted for. residents saying they've never seen anything like it. homes up to their roofs with waters. rescuers using canoes to get people to safety. ginger zee has the latest. >> reporter: the colorado landscape washing away as rescuers race to those trapped by raging waters. >> it's like the ocean out there. >> reporter: dozens of homes, entire neighborhoods up to their roofs in that murky run-off. >> within one hour, it completely surrounded the entire house and we had current. >> reporter: some caught riding it out. others plowing through the historic floods in pick-up trucks.

in welk county. >> i have three horses. i hope they're alive. we had to get out so quick. >> reporter: look at those abandoned mobile homes, congested, toppled by the devastating waters. in this park, this dramatic video of a woman desperately holding on as rescue workers ziplined her to safety. and from inside this fire truck, the floodwaters bubbling over the windshield. president obama declaring a state of emergency friday. and it's not just colorado. parts of new mexico are getting up to 4 inches of rain an hour at times. at least 25 homes evacuated. countless roads impassable. the remorseless waters devouring highways, homes crumbling in the force. a full weekend forecast of more rain.

>> that was ginger zee reporting. the huge fire that destroyed much of the jersey shore boardwalk is considered suspicious. the fire broke out in a frozen custard shop on the boardwalk. flames driven by 30-mile-an-hour winds quickly spread, destroying dozens of businesses. investigators are calling the ruins a crime scene. the boardwalk had been painstakingly rebuilt after being battered by superstorm sandy just last year. governor chris christie vowed the boardwalk will be rebuilt again. california health officials are warning people not to eat an imported candy. the latest batch of santos rewadi sugar candy has more than double the level of lead. health officials say to throw it out immediately. the recalled packages are seven ounces and will have a label on them that says batch number 12/030. more races are scheduled

today in the americas cup finals. but time is running out for oracle team usa. they were beaten two more times on thursday and they now lead 6 to minus 1. new zealand inched past oracle during the third leg of race six. they led in race seven and beat oracle by more than a minute. today's races are scheduled for 1:15 and 2:15. always a great time out on crissy field and the marina green. it's just beautiful and incredible to see. >> and the winds will be perfect for today. 15 to 25-mile-per-hour knots from the northwest. we'll see those boats look like they're flying. very impressive. live doppler 7 hd, looking around the bay area, a few clouds have spilled in overnight from the coast. pretty quiet as well.

we're looking towards the bay bridge. still gray out there. and we will get to see that sunshine this afternoon. it's currently 56 in san francisco. 58 in oakland. 60 in san jose. we have another shot for you. this is of the golden gate bridge. and you notice the clouds there just kind of hitting the top of the tower but across the span, still pretty clear. we'll break the clouds up pretty shortly. by lunchtime, you'll see more sunshine. novato, 60 degrees. here's a beautiful shot from downtown where you get to see some of the blue skies and the low clouds as well have seeped in. what you can expect for today, we have the low clouds and fog. some drizzle near the coast and parts of the bay. even some patchy fog possible in some of the valleys. but it's starting to go as we continue into the morning. mild to warm temperatures this afternoon and then slightly cooler tomorrow.

here's a look at the water vapor image. we have this narrow ridge of high pressure and this area of low pressure, it's bringing us quiet conditions right now. but starting tomorrow, this area of low pressure will kind of sweep towards our north bringing us cooler numbers, slightly stronger onshore flow. but it's this other area of low pressure, storm coming in from the gulf of alaska that's going to dip south. depending on how far south it dips with this associated cold front, we might see a chance of rain friday into saturday. but for today, enjoy a really pleasant weekend ahead. lots of sunshine in the south bay. santa clara, 78. perfect for the art and wine festival. upper 70s through menlo park and mountain view. 71 in milbuburmilbury. crowded in chinatown for the moon festival. there's a parade as well today. expect lots of traffic also

cold front heading our way, that's going to bring us a slight chance of rain possibly into next weekend. >> frances, thank you. tomorrow night's game between the 49ers and the seahawks could be one of the loudest ever. a group of seahawks fans will try to break the guinness world record for loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium. the current record is 131.76 decibels set during a turkish soccer match two years ago. the loudest rock concerts and sandblasting are 115 decibels and the human ear starts to feel pain at 125. if you are heading out to the game, if you're a niners fan, you may want to grab some of these stylish 49er earplugs. they should help dampen the noise of what seattle fans call the 12th man. take a look at this. it is a short-term solution. how this

mcintosh. he wore some cutoffs in order to make a point to his 19-year-old daughter who was apparently dressing a little too risque for his test. do we have the pictures? you have to check them out online. moving along to the new eastern span of the bay bridge, it has a new honor this morning. guinness world record said it's the widest bridge in the world. take a live look. there's the beautiful new span. the top of the tower, a little bit obscured by clouds. the span measures 258 1/3 feet wide. it surpasses the port man bridge in british columbia, which is 213 feet wide. more good news for chocolate lovers. you have a date with decadence this weekend at san francisco's ghirardelli square. thousands of people are expected to pour into the popular tourist destination for the 18th annual chocolate festival. almost 30 vendors will be giving out samples of their

it's 8:30. we're starting with a quick look at the weather. here's frances dinglasan in for lisa this morning. >> good morning. here's a live view from the east bay hills camera looking out forwards mt. diablo. a lot of those low clouds causing one-hour flight arrival delays right now on average at sfo. we will see more sunshine this afternoon. it will play out nicely today around the bay. temperatures will be 68 to 78, upper 60s and 70s, mild temperatures. along the coast, partly sunny conditions. temperatures mainly in the 60s. inland areas will be sunny and warm. upper 70s to upper 80s. i'll have your complete accuweather seven-day forecast, which includes a chance of rain coming up shortly. new this morning, secretary

of state john kerry says the u.s. and russia have reached an agreement on a plan to secure syria's chemical weapons. the development comes as president obama says the world must stand ready to act if diplomacy fails. in his weekly address, the president says poison gas cannot become the new weapon of choice for terrorists. >> the use of chemical weapons anywhere in the world is an affront to human dignity and a threat to the security of people everywhere. as i've said for weeks, the international community must respond to this outrage. a dictator must not be allowed to gas children in their beds with impunity. and we cannot risk poison gas becoming the new weapon of choice for tyrants and terrorists the world over. >> syria has agreed to a russian proposal to turn over its chemical weapons. john kerry says if syria does not comply with the agreement, the u.s. and russia will seek a security council resolution that could authorize military action. happening today, bay area demonstrators will hold a protest over america's possible

response to the crisis in syria. there have been several similar events in recent weeks including protests staged in front of senator dianne feinstein's office and house. today's event begins at 1:00 and will be held on the pedestrian path of the new eastern span of the bay bridge. governor brown and a high-ranking chinese official signs a landmark agreement to fight climate change. the signing took place yesterday. the memo of understanding calls on china and california to curb carbon gases, reduce energy consumption and invest in clean technologies. currently china produces more greenhouse gases than any other country. governor brown says china's pollution problems are also california's. >> build-up of greenhouse gases is diffuse, it's spread throughout the entire world. and greenhouse gas comes from africa, from china, from california, from texas, from great britain, from all over. >> a chinese government representative says the agreement is vital to help china

meet its clean energy goals. a joint task force will immediate periodically to share research and policy on climate change. this morning, domestic violence victims have more protection. a law signed by governor brown will allow domestic violence victims to include social media as part of a restraining order. the new law is designed to protect victims from online harassment. >> back in the day, there had to be physical injury. there are many ways for somebody to intimidate and harass somebody. now that social media is such a common thing, it's just -- if somebody has bad intent, that's one of the tools they're using. >> the state legislature has also approved a controversial bill to give california driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. more on that and other measures now from abc 7 news respond, nannette miranda. >> reporter: it's a banner year for immigrants living in california illegally.

the state legislature sent governor brown numerous proposals that help the more than 2.8 million who are here. >> it does reinforce the message to washington that california is serious about the need for comprehensive immigration reform. >> reporter: among the proposals headed to the governor, cracking down on consultants who take money to help immigrants save a place in live for legalization. another measure would allow someone who passes the bar exam to obtain a law license even if they're undocumented. there's also the trust act, prohibiting local law enforcement from turning over immigrants to the feds when arrested for minor crimes. but the big one is giving them a driver's license, which was thought to be shelved for the year. state senator ricardo lotta says in a meeting wednesday night, members of the latino caucus lamented his reluctance to sign a driver's license bill. >> and he said, what are you talking about? send me the bill. i've been waiting for that bill. i want to sign it. we thought this was so important that we had to move and had to

strike while the iron was hot. >> that purred a last-minute frenzy getting the bill to the governor's desk. surprisingly that and other bills got republican support. it comes at a time when the party is trying to make inroads with latinos. andy says california must do what it can. >> i'm in a state office. but we have to react to what the federal government does or does not do. this was something that we could do. >> reporter: governor brown told the sacramento bee he changed his mind and now supports a driver's license bill because it's becoming clear the feds probably won't act on immigration reform anytime soon. in sacramento, nannette miranda, abc 7 news. a 13year-long lawsuit against manufacturers of lead-based paint is wrapping up in san jose. ten california cities and counties are seeking $1 billion to clean up residences. david louie explains what's at stake. >> reporter: the use of lead-based paint was banned in

1978 but the risk remains in older homes and buildings. the u.s. centers for disease control and prevention projects more than 500,000 children may have unhealthy levels of lead. the paint industry says it didn't know for decades that lead in paint was dangerous. when it did, it paid fees to support prevention programs. five companies are being sued by three cities and seven counties that say that isn't enough. >> they don't remove the lead paint from homes. until you do, children are still going to get poisoned. and that is the remedy we're seeking in this lawsuit. >> reporter: oakland, san francisco and the bay area counties of santa clara, alameda, san mateo and solano are bringing the lawsuit. but the california attorney general points out a similar strategy in other states has failed. >> seven other state supreme courts have looked at this very same evidence, the same issues.

and in every instance sided with the manufacturers. >> reporter: the lawsuit seeks over $1 billion to help remediate the hazard. hazmat doc has been addressing lead contamination for years. chipped services can be remutual fund and repainted. >> it's a short-term remediation and the encapslation method of putting something over it is a long-term. and then there's always the component removal. >> reporter: closing arguments are scheduled for a week from monday here in san jose. the judge has 90 days to render a decision. in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. coming up next on abc 7 saturday morning news, it is moving day for a local technology incubator. so many start-ups have been born there and now the company needs more space. and it is 8:37. let's take a live look outside.

now the university is investing in those young entrepreneurs in a totally new way. jonathan bloom explains. >> reporter: in the parking lot of the aol building in palo alto, a big leather couch is being wheeled and hoisted into the future. it's a couch many young entrepreneurs have slept on if they made it that far. >> people sleep under the desks sometimes. they'll code, code, code for 15 hours straight and then lie down on the floor and sleep for a couple of hours and get back up. >> reporter: it's that kind of passion that makes a perfect fit here at startex, borne out of stanford university. it's a learning program for entrepreneurs who are passionate about an idea. >> when i say passionate, i don't mean that they think it's cool. it's that they can't sleep at night because they're thinking about it. >> reporter: cameron founded the company two years ago. this is your desk, the messiest one of all? >> yeah, i'm not too clean. >> reporter: now he's packing his things.

startex isn't shutting down. far from it. after helping to hatch 176 start-u start-ups, it has outgrown the space aol gave it to get off the ground. and now with a $3.6 million grant from the university and the hospital, it's heading out on its own. even with more money to rent more space, nobody here is planning to spread out and put their feet up. turns out working shoulder to shoulder is one of the things that's made the company so successful. >> in this space, usually ten people are sitting here. >> reporter: it creates accidental teamwork. >> you say, oh, hey, i can help with that. >> reporter: now stanford is part of that teamwork. they'll contribute 10% to any round of venture capital a startex company gets. an investment in a different sort of education. >> we have project-based classes but this is the ultimate form of doing. >> reporter: in palo alto, jonathan bloom, abc 7 news.

towers earlier this morning. and now not as much. there is some fog being reported in santa rosa where it's currently 56 degrees. napa and novato both at 57. concord clearer but only 58 right now. in the south bay, we start to see some sunshine usually there. but still cloudy here. looking over the downtown area where the low clouds prevail. we'll see some fog as well near the coast and the bay, even patchy fog developing in some of the inland valleys in the north bay. mild to warm conditions this afternoon. and slightly cooler on sunday. the water vapor image tells a nice story of what you can expect. basically we have this narrow ridge of high pressure and then we have this area of low pressure. the water vapor image also shows us the moisture in the upper levels of the atmosphere, the green showing more moisture, the orange showing the drier air. right now, that's bringing us quiet conditions with the narrow

ridge. but with the forecast model, you can see why it's going to cool down a little bit on sunday, low pressure starts to move closer bringing us a stronger onshore flow. temperatures come down. and then we're watching a storm coming in from the gulf of alaska that's going to head south. just depending on how far south it gets, this may bring us a chance of rain on friday and into saturday with its cold front as well as it sweeps through. but for today, it's going to be sunny and mild. santa clara, 78. 79 in san jose. look for upper 70s in the lower part of the peninsula. 77 in palo alto. 74 in san mateo and 62 in pacifica. still cloudy along the coast. 65 in the sunset district. 68 in downtown san francisco. and a lot of 80s in the north bay, mostly sunny there. 84 in santa rosa. 83 in sonoma and napa and very pleasant in the east bay with 70 in berkeley. if you're heading to the cal versus buckeye game today at
