>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, september 15th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist frances dinglasan, who is in for lisa argen. >> good morning, everyone. here's a live view from the roof camera. you see the flags blowing out there. we are starting out a little breezy. fairly mild in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. in oakland currently we will come down a few more degrees in the next couple hours before sunrise. here's what you can expect today. we have fog that will develop possibly near the coast and in some of the north bay valleys it will be breezy once again. temperatures cooler compared to

yesterday. once the sunshine shows up it will stick around a little longer and then we will get clouds later in the evening tonight. temperatures dropping down around 7:00 this evening, between 60 and 70 degrees. i'll tell you more about a chance of rain in the accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, francis. we have breaking news out of pittsburgh where three people have died following a house tire this morning. the two-alarm fire broke out at a home on dimaggio avenue around 12:30. three people died at the scene. they have not yet been identified. crews were able to get the fire about a half-hour later. investigators say a second home may have been damaged by the fire. and following more breaking news, this time-out of oakland, where all lanes of southbound interstate 880 have reopen, following a fatal crash this morning. the accident was reported just after 1:30 at 98th avenue at the on-ramp there. police say multiple crashes were reported during that time.

including one involving a motorcycle. one person was killed. it's unclear if that was the motorcyclist. the roadway was reopened around 3:30 this morning. the search is on this morning four man involved in a shocking assault in the park. the victim, a housekeeper at a high-end hotel. lisa amin gulezian has the details. >> they continue to look for clues and a suspect after a housekeepinger was attacked. she was working when the suspect grabbed her from behind and put a knife to her throat. he forced her into a bedroom, tied her up and sexually assaulted her. >> it's unusual to hear that happen in a place like this. >> this double tree is known for tennis courts, golf course and restaurants. >> very shocking because in a hotel, especially this caliber of hotel, you think you will be more safe than that. i don't care if you are a guest or an employee, you should be

safe. >> hotel management released this statement saying, quote, the well-being, safety and security of our team members and our guests is of paramount importance. those who have worked in the hotel industry for years admit this type of attack is rare, but possible. >> we have staff over here who is like family to us and if something like that ever happened to them, it would just be heartbreaking. >> patricia and her family own america's best value inn and sleep in santa rosa. she regularly walks the property, checks rooms and watches the front desk alone. like the double tree, security cameras are set up throughout this hotel as well. the police refused to talk to us on camera, but did release this description of the suspect. a 30 to 40-year-old african-american with a thin build. 5'10" and has a tattoo of writing on the right side of his neck. abc7 news.

>> this morning a manhunt also continues in oakland. police searching for two men involved in a shootout outside the downtown marriott on friday. a cabdriver standing about 100 feet away was shot in the leg. no one else was hurt. the shooters ran off before police could arrive. it happened minutes best ohio state football team checked in. they were in town for the cal game. there's a bay area connection to the death of two children in orange county. according to police, a 42-year-old woman tried to kill herself saturday afternoon by ramming her car into a electrical salt. her comments led police to the bodies of her children. she'll be booked on two counts of suspicion of murder. this morning the families of five men who have been reported missing in san francisco are hoping to focus new attention on their cases. abc7 news reporter sergio

quintana met with those families and he has more on the renewed efforts to find these young men. >> at golden gate park she's parents share hugs and smiles. unfortunately what unites them is a terrible sense of loss. they are the stories of five young men who have gone missing in san francisco. they are trying to raise awareness for missing cases that often don't get enough attention. >> grown adults are just as important as anyone else. >> this couple's son went missing nearly two years ago. jackson millner may of 2010, cameron in october of 2011. christian hughes went missing early this february and sean city disappeared this may. their families say each has some type of psychological issue that may have prompted their disappearances. >> yes, a mental disorder. he's an adult and if he shoes to stay on the streets, and i find my son, i don't like that, but i'm okay. he's a grown man.

i'm not trying to make him anything. just want to know he's alive. that's all. >> this event at golden gate part was put together in part by the family of sean city. since he went missing his family has been posting signs throughout san francisco. this family say their son may have been last seen in the ashby district. >> it's breaking my heart. worst two years of my life. i don't want to do it anymore. >> if sean is spotted, his dad hopes someone takes a picture or gets a video to give to police. >> abc7 news. >> the driver of a second vehicle involved in a crash that killed an antioch teenager has come forward. a 17-year-old boy died after the car he was in slammed into a tree on hillcrest avenue just after 7:00 friday night. a 19-year-old in the car was also injured. police say while the second

vehicle does not appear to have collided with the car that crashed, both cars were speeding just before that accident. the driver of the second car is cooperating with investigators. more rain is forecast for colorado today, as floodwaters continue to rise this morning. five people have died. thousands have opinion forced to leave their homes. military helicopter speakers convoys have evacuated more than 1200 people and officials are tell people to leave now or they might not get another chance. abc news reporter chuck sievertson has the details. >> hundreds of fat guard troops braving treacherous floodwaters driving through practically impassable streets, picking up stranded families, their children and pets and important personal belongings stashed in their suitcases. nearly 7,000 people have been evacuated so far. saturday officials ordered even more mandatory evacuations. this drone video shows the power of the raging river in the

neighborhood is devastating. it has damaged bridges, torn up streets, cutting off more summer communities. >> there are a lot of people who have been stranded for many days. >> more than a dozen helicopters are now the only connection between stranded residents and the outside world. >> i think what we have going on here in the last 24 hours is the greatest number of americans rescued by helicopter since hurricane katrina. >> the choppers pick up people and deliver food and water to those left behind. there are about 1200 of them alone in larimer county. >> we have over 7,000 meals ready to seat, mres. >> many farms and their animals are surrounded by water. farmers spread out across the flood zone to rescue their animals. >> we got 14 head of houses out in water that was above the hood of the truck. >> and it isn't over yet by any stretch. flood warnings and watches are posted by the end of the weekend, threatening to push

even more water into a flooded area that's already the size of connecticut. chuck sievertson, abc news, new york. a group of teenagers from sacramento is set to come home today after being trapped in colorado by all the flooding. more than three dozen students length on september 3rd bound for a ranch. just before the ten day trip came to an end, massive flooding began in the town of lyons. they need to travel through the town to get the airport but the roads are flooded. and worse for the parents is the children don't have cell service at the ranch. >> terrifying. you hope she's safe. >> the ranch said the kids are dry, they are doing fine. they were scheduled to return home on friday. officials say mt. diablo state park is expected to reopen tomorrow, more than a week after a fire that charred more than 3100 acres. the fire is now 100 percent contained. it started one week ago today and forced the evacuation of

more than 75 homes. none of the homes burned. cal fire firefighters are still work to clean up the inside of containment lines. investigators believe that fire was started by a target shooter near clayton. firefighters expect to have the rim fire, burning near yosemite national park, contained by friday. it's 81% contained. highway 120, the main road into yosemite, remains reopened yesterday afternoon. a team of scientists looking into the damage expects to have their assessment and recovery plan completed this week. so glad to see they are getting their arms around that. frances dinglasan is in now for lisa argen with a preview of our accuweather forecast. >> yeah, we have a fairly cool start this morning, although it's mild in parts of the east bay, asywe lack by from emeryville. folks getting ready for the try

>> at least five people have been killed in mexico due to two storm systems pounding on opposite ends of the country. hurry ingrid on one end and another on the other. hundreds have been evacuated ahead of the storm. meanwhile officials are worried tropical storm manual could become a hurricane before it makes landfall today. secretary john kerry will meet with israel to talk.

carely will brief israel's prime minister on the agreement, as well as discuss developments in the israeli-palestinian peace process. from jerusalem he travels to paris for discussions about syria tomorrow with the presence. foreign minister. a coalition reef sis stance organization held a anti-war walk on the few eastern fan of the bay bridge. leaders said they want to send a message to the obama administration that the american people does not want a war with syria. they say syria has never done anything to threaten the u.s., and if the united states does bomb syria, it would be a vials of international law. this morning in an abc news exclusive, george stephanopoulos goes one-on-one with president obama at the white house about the situation in syria. it will be the president's first interview since his major address on the syrian crisis. the president will also discuss

looming showdowns with congress over the budget and obamacare. you can catch "this week" right here on abc7 at 8:00. >> a bay area man will spend the next five years in prison for stealing a fortune in historic gold nuggets. 61-year-old scott bailey after an pablo pleaded guilty to burglary. authorities say bailey and an being police broke into a county courthouse last year, stealing a million dollars worth of gold nuggets. his alleged accomplice goes on trial in november. employees of at&t park are well-prepared for any emergency this morning thanks to a drill that took place yesterday. meanwhile raiders fan get a call reminding them of new security rules. colonel bernard has the story. >> it was only a test, but it looked and sounded like the real

problem. skipper said, yes, it was a close call. >> went through, i guess, you know a split second to -- we were about as close as you could possibly get before the thing would have ended up onets sigh. >> the oracle team won the race by 52 seconds. second race with few zeal land leading was postponed because of high winds. new zealand needs just three more wins to take the cup. oracle needs nine. race nine and ten are scheduled for this afternoon. francis dinglasan is here for lisa argen. what about the winds for today's race? >> they will be similar to yesterday's conditions. so we are forecasting winds to be around 15 to 25 knots once again this afternoon. from the west this time as opposed to the northwest

yesterday but similar speeds. it's already pretty breezy this morning. in fact at sfo they are reporting gusts of up to 22 miles an hour right now and winds from the west, steady rinds around 15 miles an hour. live doppler 7hd, sweeping around the bay area, you see some of the breaks already in the low clouds. a little bit clear areas of blue. so that's something i think we will notice today. a little bit more sunshine. a live shot from emeryville shows you some more of those breaks in the clouds. we saw much thicker coverage of clouds yesterday morning. current temperatures, fairly mild in some locations. it's currently 57 in san francisco. 60 in oakland. 59 redwood city and san jose. but i also want to show you the shot of the golden gate bridge. lacking fairly clear here. although in santa rosa, where it's only 54 degrees, visibility has been reported to be dropped down to three-fourths of a mile due to fog. look for fog to develop in some

other north bay valleys as well, and nap you paw, and -- napa, where it's 39 degrees. 59 in livermore. here's another view from the roof camera. you see the flags blowing there. we have the breeze this morning guns again it it will be strongr the afternoon. low clouds, patchy fog for the morning, but more sunshine this afternoon. and we have a warmup midweek before a chance of rain. so here's the water vapor image showing you what's going on in the upper levels of the atmosphere. we have this trough moving in bringing us the cooler air mass. and we have the dryer air moving in as well. so we should see more sunshine. but temperatures will still be a little bit cooler in some locations. looking ahead, just want to give you a heads-up. we will be tracking the storm that's moving toward the bay area by friday. this low will be dropping down from the gulf of alaska. a chance of rain friday, but at this point it's looking like it will stay north of the golden

gate bridge, so possibly sonoma, napa counties into saturday morning. doesn't look like it will sit south of the golden gate bridge. enjoy another beautiful day in the south bay. santa clara, 76 for the high today for the last day of the art and wine festival. mid-70s for the most part on the peninsula. 76 redwood city, 69 in milbrae, san francisco partly cloudy as well, 68 downtown. look for low 80s in sonoma and napa. 77 in santa rosa. and the east bay will be upper 60 to mid-70s this afternoon. but very comfortable still in the inland locations. low to mid-80s for you. one of the warmer spots, 85 in fairfield, and also in pittsburgh. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. we will go up and down a little bit throughout the week. so today a little bit cooler compared to yesterday. even though we are getting more sunshine. we have more sunshine, but cooler air. holding fairly steady for monday. then we dip a little bit, a

>> the annual san francisco dragon boat festival continues today at treasure island. the races kicked off yesterday morning for 130 teams. some of the 3600 paddlers come from as far away as the netherlands. the festival runs from 10:00 this morning to 5:00 p.m. with lots of food, entertainment and free activities for kids of all ages. and another popular event is back in full swing this weekend. the deer valley chocolate festival goes from noon to five today. it is expected to draw 35,000 people. it raises money for project open hand. that's a nonprofit that feeds ailing and elderly people in the bay area.

and monterey bay, could develop in watsonville. currently 52 degrees today. here's what to expect. we have the morning low clouds but we are already starting to see a break in some of the clouds. patchy fog still likely in the valley. temperatures in the low 60s this afternoon. we will see breezy conditions. once we get to the sunshine we will see more of it, but with the cooler air mass you notice temperatures coming down a few degrees. low 60s to mid-80s today. then we see the sunshine stick around a little longer. clouds muff in later on this evening. i'll have the complete accuweather seven-day forecast coming up shortly. carolyn. >> francis, thank you. new details about a valley teenager who died while trapped inside a car. the 14-year-old was found dead inside her brothers bmw outside a high school on wednesday. police believe an anti-theft feature kicked in, not letting her escape the sweltering vehicle. investigators say the doors locked both on the inside and

outside when the key is used. it also disables the horn, and makes it almost impossible to escape. >> i don't think of that even after the investigation started. that was the furthest from my mind. >> an autopsy suggests martinez died from heatstroke. a passenger on a greyhound bus that overturned in ohio yesterday is telling a television station the driver fell asleep. investigators have not yet determined exactly what happened when the bus went off the road early yesterday morning. that accident sent 37 people, including the driver, to the hospital. all but 7 have been released. tens of thousands of americans may have been overpaid by uncle sam. few years thousands were given disability payments they were not eligible for. that's according to a government report. recipients go through a five

year waiting period they can't earn more than $1,000 a month. in one case a physician was paid $22,000 a month and was still paid inned 1,000 in benefits over three years. the government says it will recoup any improper payments. a tearful paula deen made her first public appearance this weekend since legal problems and controversy in the court of public opinion. >> the one place that i would want to make my first step back out was texas. >> about 1500 people gave deen a standing ovation when she appeared at a cook show in huston. deen said the last three months has been a roller coaster since it was disclosed in a court deposition that she had used racial slurs this the past. jerry sandusky's challenge to his child molestation conviction is set to go toward an appeals court tuesday.

he's hoping to overturn a sentence that could keep him behind bars for life. court will decide whether or not prosecutors made an improper reference to the fact that sandusky did not of it. they will also decide whether jury instructions were mishandled, and whether the defense could have been given more time before trial. the federal government is launching a new smartphone app to catch future predators. vic lee shows how it works. >> if you open up-ice's new smartphone app, this is one of the first mugs you will see. kevin is a 37-year-old paramedic who once lived in the bay area. he disappeared last year after being indicted on child pornography charges. >> he is responsible for distribution of over 700 images and some videos of child sexual exploitation.

>> the app's alert page lists all of the fugitives, their pictures and backgrounds. ice hopes someone out there will know where they are, the app makes it easy to contact investigators. you can text online or press the button that allows you to phone in the tip. agency has already this success using social media to capture huge tis. last year in monterey david stevens was arrested after posting his picture on facebook. >> within 24 hours tips came flooding in and we were able to apprehend the person. >> they also hope the app will help them find registered sex offenders who failed to check in with police. the problem is many are homeless and it's difficult. >> these people wouldn't show up it a designated area. >> last month a multi-agency task force went into homeless edge campments along the guadalupe pay river looking for

22 fugitives. they could only find a few. and also john does, whose identities are known. they first saw this man in videos seven years ago. they hope the new app will lead to a name and his arrest. vic lee, abc7 news. it's been just over two weeks since the wheels started rolling on the bay area's first bike sharing pilot program and already there are calls to expand the system. this morning san francisco chronicle reports advocates are hoping to more than double the number of bikes available across the bay area to 1500 by year's end. but money is an issue. the $11 million project is publicly funded. officials say they are hoping for private sponsorship to expand the system. happening today, a bay area native will compete for the 2014 miss america crown. 22-year-old crystal lee of san francisco was crowned miss california last year.

>> going to take you down memory lane, back when high school offered auto shop as part of the curriculum. now one high school in san francisco is reffing up its program and encouraging students to sign up. abc7 news education reporter lyanne melendez has more. >> few schools in the bay area encourage high school students get down and dirty to repair cars. george washington high in san francisco is reintroducing car shop as part of this curriculum. >> i just like the feeling of messing with cars and you can tweak cars and all that. >> it's what girls should know. if your car break down at the side of the road you should know how to got out and fix it. >> here are some older pictures of the auto shop which closed in

like it's been covered in the clouds. that gives you an idea of the changing conditions. temperatures in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees in san francisco, oakland and in san jose. a shot of the golden gate bridge shows visibility looks good here across the span, but in santa rosa fog has limited visibility, down to three-fourths after mile, currently 54 degrees and look for patchy fog to develop as well in some of the north bay valleys like in novato. the cool air also pools there and that's when we get fog developing. here's a live view from the kgo roof camera, looking toward the bay bridge. we see some of the gray clouds in the distance. you also see the flag blowing. and we will see the breeze kick in again this afternoon from the west at 15 to 25 knots. low clouds and patchy fog for the morning. but more sunshine expected to. and then we have warmer days midweek. the water vapor image shows the

moisture levels in the upper levels of the atmosphere. we have the cooler air and also dryer air coming towards the bay area. so we expect coastal clearing today. now yesterday some of the clouds stuck around, especially in the peninsula coast for quite a bit of longer than we expected during the afternoon. but with more sunshine, numbers are still going to come down a few degrees. santa clara 76. san jose 78. 75 in palo alto, your high expected to. and then pacifica still cool around 62 degrees. 68 downtown san francisco. and look for some low 80s through sonoma and napa, petaluma warming up to 8 degrees. and still pretty comfortable this the east bay, but you will notice it will be a little cooler and you will feel that afternoon sea breeze. 68 this berkeley. 72 in san leandro. and very mild conditions still and warm even in the east bay. 82 walnut creek. we 80 in pleasanton.
