>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, september 15th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist frances dinglasan, who is in for lisa argen. >> good morning, everyone. here's a beautiful live view from mt. tam. we can actually see san francisco this morning. but you will notice we will get low clouds spilling in from the coast and also developing in the valleys. you notice the cameras bouncing

around. breezy conditions this morning and from the west around 15, 25 knots. it will be breezy around the bay, as well. temperatures carolina compared to yesterday. mid-60s to mid-70s around the bay. along the coast it will be mainly in the 60s. you should get more afternoon sunshine today compared to yesterday. inland still very pleasant, sunny and warm. but we will go with upper 70sed to to mid-80s. so you will also be coming down a few degrees. we have temperatures going up and down all week and i'll tell you about that more with the accuweather seven day forecast coming up. >> thank you. we have breaking news out of pittsburgh where three people have died following a house tire this morning. the two-alarm fire broke out at a home on dimaggio avenue around 12:30. authorities say three people died at the scene. they have not yet been identified. crews were able to get the fire about a half-hour later. investigators say a second home may have been damaged by the fire. and following more breaking

news, this time-out of oakland, where all lanes of southbound interstate 880 have reopened, following a fatal crash this morning. the accident was reported just after 1:30 this morning at 98th avenue at the on-ramp there. police say multiple crashes were reported during that time. including one involving a motorcycle. one person was killed. it's unclear if that was the motorcyclist. the roadway was reopened around 3:30 this morning. the search is on this morning for man involved in a shocking assault in the park. the victim, a housekeeper at a high-end hotel. lisa amin gulezian has the details. >> the police continue to look for clues and a suspect after a housekeepinger was attacked. she was working when the suspect grabbed her from behind and put a knife to her throat. he forced her into a bedroom, tied her up and sexually assaulted her.

>> it's very unusual to hear that happen in a place like this. >> this double tree is known for tennis courts, golf course and restaurants. guests had no idea what happened. >> very shocking because in a hotel, especially this caliber of hotel, you think you will be more safe than that. i don't care if you are a guest or an employee, you should be safe. >> hotel management released this statement saying, quote, the well-being, safety and security of our team members and our guests is of paramount importance. those who have worked in the hotel industry for years admit this type of attack is rare, but possible. >> we have staff over here who is like family to us and if something like that ever happened to them, it would just be heartbreaking. >> patricia and her family own america's best value inn and sleep in santa rosa. she regularly walks the property, checks rooms and watches the front desk alone. like at the double tree, security cameras are set up throughout this hotel as well. the police refused to talk to us

on camera, but did release this description of the suspect. a 30 to 40-year-old african-american with a thin build. he's 5'10" and has a tattoo of writing on the right side of his neck. abc7 news. >> this morning a manhunt also continues in oakland. police searching for two men involved in a shootout outside the downtown marriott on friday. a cabdriver standing about 100 feet away was shot in the leg. no one else was hurt. the shooters ran off before police could arrive. it happened minutes best ohio state football team checked in. they were in town for the cal game. there's a bay area connection to the death of two children in orange county. according to police, a 42-year-old woman tried to kill herself friday afternoon by ramming her car into a electrical vault.

her comments led police to the bodies of her children. she used to live in san jose. she's now facing murder charges. this morning the families of five men who have been reported missing in san francisco are hoping to focus new attention on their cases. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana met with those families and he has more on the renewed efforts to find these young men. >> at golden gate park she's -- these parents share hugs and smiles. unfortunately what unites them is a terrible sense of loss. they are the parents of five young men who have gone missing in san francisco. they are trying to raise awareness for missing cases that often don't get enough attention. >> grown men and women, adults, are just as important as nen else. >> this couple's son went missing nearly two years ago. jackson miller in may of 2010, cameron remmer in october of 2011. christian hughes went missing early this february and sean

city disappeared this may. their families say each has some type of psychological issue that may have prompted their disappearances. >> yes, a mental disorder. he's an adult and if he shoes to -- chooses to stay here on the streets and i find my son, i don't like that, but i'm okay with that. he's a grown man. i'm not trying to make him anything. just want to know he's alive. that's all. >> this event at golden gate park was put together in part by the family of sean city. since he went missing his family has been posting signs throughout san francisco. the brutgers say their son may have been last seen in the ashby district. >> it's breaking my heart. worst two years of my life. i don't want to do it anymore. >> if sean is spotted, his dad hopes someone takes a picture or gets a video to give to police. in san francisco, abc7 news. the driver of a second vehicle involved in a crash that killed an antioch teenager has

come forward. police say a 17-year-old boy died after the car he was in slammed into a tree on hillcrest avenue just after 7:00 friday night. a 19-year-old in the car was also injured. police say while the second vehicle does not appear to have collided with the car that crashed, both cars were speeding just before that accident. the driver of the second car is cooperating with investigators. more rain is forecast for colorado today, as floodwaters continue to rise this morning. five people have died. thousands have been forced to leave their homes. military helicopters and convoys have evacuated more than 1200 people and officials are tell people to leave now or they might not get another chance. abc news reporter chuck sievertson has the details. >> hundreds of national guard troops braving treacherous floodwaters driving through practically impassable streets, picking up stranded families, their children and pets and

important personal belongings stashed in their suitcases. nearly 7,000 people have been evacuated so far. saturday officials ordered even more mandatory evacuations. this drone video shows the power of the raging river in the neighborhood is devastating. it has damaged bridges, torn up streets, cutting off more summer communities. >> there are a lot of people who have been stranded for many days. >> more than a dozen helicopters are now the only connection between stranded residents and the outside world. >> i think what we have going on here in the last 24 hours is the greatest number of americans rescued by helicopter since hurricane katrina. >> the choppers pick up people and deliver food and water to those left behind. there are about 1200 of them alone in larimer county. >> we have over 7,000 meals

ready to eat, mres. >> many farms and their animals are surrounded by water. farmers spread out across the flood zone to rescue their animals. above the hood of the truck. >> and it isn't over yet by any stretch. flood warnings and watches are posted by the end of the weekend, threatening to push even more water into a flooded area that's already the size of connecticut. chuck sievertson, abc news, new york. >> officials say mount dough ab below state park is set to reopen tomorrow more than a week after a fire that charred more than 3100 acres. the fire is now 100 percent contained. it started one week ago today and forced the evacuation of more than 75 homes. none of the homes burned. cal fire firefighters are still working to clean up the inside of containment lines. investigators believe that fire was started by a target shooter near clayton. firefighters expect to have the rim fire, burning near yosemite national park, contained by friday. it's burned 255,000 acres.

pacific ocean. several thousand residents along the gulf coast has been evacuated ahead of ingrid's expected arrival tomorrow. meanwhile forecasters are warning tropical storm manual could become a hurricane before it makes landfall today. secretary john kerry will israel's prime ministered to briefing him on the situation in syria. they will advise him on the deal securing syria's chemical weapons. and they will also discuss developments in the israeli-palestinian peace process. from jerusalem, kerry travels to paris for discussions tomorrow with the french for yen minister. a coalition resistance organization held an anti-war

reminding them of new security rules. colonel bernard has the story. >> it was only a test, but it looked and sounded like the real thing. no fans inside, but 800 giants employees played along in this realtime evacuation of at&t park. a suspect, armed with a gun, inside at&t was the scenario. it sent some workers running for cover and others filing out to a safe meeting spot near the park. giants bosses hope the same can be done with 40,000-some fans inside. >> it's our priority. if we aren't safe, we can't enjoy a baseball or any event that goes on inside the park. we are continually testing our our systems. >> 49er fans packed the stick last weekend for their home opener and found new nfl mandated rules, no backpacks no, large bags inside. but small, clear bags like these are okay. >> raiders, baby!

winds today? >> well, the sustained speeds determine whether they cancel the race or not. there's a small craft advisory for the bay this afternoon, winds from the west 15 to 25 miles once again. here's a live look at live doppler 7hd. we are sweeping around the bay area, just pecking up some breaks in the clouds. that's a nice change compared to yesterday. more sunshine expected. here's a live look from emeryville where we can see all the way across the bay bridge into san francisco. but gray skies still overhead. currently in san francisco it's 56. 60 in oakland. and 59 in san jose. we have some mild numbers out there. check out this live shot from the golden gate bridge. we see those clear skies over parts of the bay area already. but fog still reported in santa rosa where it's currently 53 degrees. although the visibility has improved, it's now up to a mile. that's an improvement from three-fourths of a mile in the past hour. 55 in napa and 52 in novato.

i also want to talk about the winds right now. sfo was reporting gusts up to 22 miles an hour, so it's quite a bit breezy. notice how calm it is in santa rosa. that's where the fog has developed and the cool air has been pooling. that kind of gives you an idea of varying conditions all around the bay area. and check out this live shot from mt. tam where we can see some of those low clouds still spilling in from the coast. the camera is bouncing. that also indicates how breezy it is today. so we've got the low clouds and patchy fog once again this morning. but what's different is we should see more sunshine today, even near the coast, and then we have some warmer days midweek. the water vapor image shows you what's going on. cooler air but also the area of orange is dryer air moving through, and that's why we expect to see more sunshine and some coastal clearing. i also want to give you a heads-up. by the end of the work week, we are tracking a storm that's going to move down from the gulf of alaska with the associated

cold front it may bring us a chance of rain friday afternoon into saturday morning. at this point it's looking more likely that it will hit just north of the the golden gate bridge. it might only affect sonoma and napa counties and nothing south of the golden gate bridge. today sunshine and quite pleasant, actually, in the south bay. 78 in san jose. 74 in milpitas. along the peninsula you will find cooler conditions. half moon bay 64, all the way up to 77 in los altos. 69 in milbrae today. san francisco downtown up to 68 degrees. north bay, you will find low 80s through sonoma and napa. and look for upper 60s to even some low to mid-70s in the east bay. castro valley, 75. last day of the festival today. mid-80s this time in the interior valleys. 85 in pittsburgh. here's your accuweather seven-day forecast. just a touch cooler today compared to yesterday. but we will see more sunshine.

>> good morning, everyone. you see some blue skies out there and low clouds. it's currently in the 50s in some locations. 56 in san francisco. oakland, though, already at 60. then some mild conditions, as we, in san jose. 59 degrees. but here's what you can expect for today. we have some of the low clouds and even some patchy fog in some of the north bay valleys. temperatures will be in the low 50s, to near 60. then this afternoon we will see more sunshine. it will be breezy, but we have cooler air moving through the bay area. so temperatures come down a degree or two. 62 to 86 degrees inland. by this evening it will be mostly clear if you have plans out, the clouds will return late and temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees. i'll have your complete accuweather seven-day forecast coming up shortly. carolyn. >> thank you, francis. >> we have new details about a valley teenager who died while trapped inside a car. the 14-year-old was found dead inside her brother's bmw outside

a high school on wednesday. it was near fresno. police believe an anti-theft feature kicked in, not letting her escape the sweltering vehicle. investigators say the doors locked on both on the inside and outside when the key is used. it also disables the horn, and makes it almost impossible to escape. >> i don't think of that even after the investigation started. that was the furthest from my mind. >> an autopsy suggests martinez died from heatstroke. a passenger on a greyhound bus that overturned in ohio yesterday is telling a television station the driver fell asleep. investigators have not yet determined exactly what happened when the bus went off the road early yesterday morning. that accident sent 37 people, including the driver, to the hospital. all but seven have been released. tens of thousands of americans may have been overpaid by uncle sam. over the last few years about

36,000 people were given disability payments they were not eligible for. that's according to a government report. to qualify, recipients go through a five-month waiting period. they can't earn more than $1,000 a month. in one case a doctor was earning $22,000 a month and was still paid $90,000 in benefits over the next three years. the government says it will recoup any improper payments. a tearful paula deen made her first public appearance this weekend since legal problems and controversy in the court of public opinion. >> the one place that i would want to make my first step back out was texas. >> about 1500 people gave deen a standing ovation when she appeared at a cooking show in houston. deen said the last three months have been a roller coaster since

it was disclosed in a court deposition that she had used racial slurs this the past. jerry sandusky's challenge to his child molestation conviction is set to go before an appeals court tuesday. he's hoping to overturn a sentence that could keep him behind bars for life. the court will decide whether or not prosecutors made an improper reference to the fact that sandusky did not testify during the trial. they will also decide whether jury instructions were mishandled, and whether the defense should have been given more time before trial. the federal government is launching a new smartphone app to catch future predators. ice calls the app operation predator. vic lee shows how it works. >> if you open up-ice's new smartphone app, this is one of the first mugs you will see. kevin is a 37-year-old paramedic who once lived in the bay area. he disappeared last year after being indicted on child

pornography charges. >> he is responsible for distribution of over 700 images and some videos of child sexual exploitation. >> the app's alert page lists all of the fugitives, their pictures and backgrounds. ice hopes someone out there will know where they are. the app makes it easy to contact investigators. you can text online or press the button that allows you to phone in the tip. agency has already had success using social media to capture fugatives. last year in monterey david stevens was arrested after posting his picture on facebook. >> within 24 hours tips came flooding in and we were able to apprehend the person. >> authorities also hope the app will help them find registered sex offenders who failed to check in with police. the problem is many are homeless and it's difficult. >> if you went through megan's

law and looked for a search, they wouldn't show newspaper a designated area. >> last month a multi-agency task force went into homeless encampments along the guadalupe river looking for 22 fugitives. they could only find a few. also on the software are john does, those seen in child born, whose identities are unknown. investigators first saw this man in videos seven years ago. they hope the new app will lead to a name and his arrest. vic lee, abc7 news. >> a bay area man will spend the next five years in prison for stealing a fortune in historic gold nuggets. the 58-year-old man pleaded guilty to burglary. bailey and an accomplice broke into a county courthouse last year, stealing $1 million worth of gold nuggets. bailey's alleged accomplice goes on trial in november. >> it's been just over two weeks since the wheels started rolling

on the bay area's first bike sharing pilot program and already there are calls to expand the system. advocates are hoping to more than double the number of bikes available across the bay area to 1500 by year's end. money is an issue, though. the $11 million project is publicly funded, and officials say they now need private sponsorships to expand the system. park in downtown walnut creek could soon cost double what drivers are paying now. a proposed plan would mean two dollars an hour at downtown parking meters instead of a dollar. enforcement would also be extended by two hours every night. the city is trying to get drivers into parking garages to help open up the crowded streets downtown. walnut creek's transportation commission will discuss possible changes at a meeting this thursday. happening today, a bay area native will compete for the 2014 miss america crown.

22-year-old crystal lee of san francisco was crowned miss california last year. according to her face book page, she won the title after her third attempt. lee attended the college of marin before graduating from stanford. she will face-off against contestants from 49 other states, puerto rico and the virgin islands in tonight's competition. it's the first time it is back in atlantic city after six years in los angeles. -- in vegas. you can catch it right here at 9:00 on abc7. >> races kicked off yesterday morning for treasure island dragon boat contests. some of the paddlers come from as far a way as the netherlands. lots of good food, entertainment and free academy tests for kids of all ages. and another popular event is

george washington high in san francisco is reintroducing car shop as part of this curriculum. >> i just like the feeling of messing with cars and you can tweak cars and all that. >> it's what girls should know. if your car break down at the side of the road you should know how to got out and fix it. >> here are some older pictures of the auto shop which closed in 2006 after the teacher retired. the last time i saw high school auto shop was in a movie. there was even a catchy song that went with it. ♪ >> oh, yeah. i love that movie. >> so why now? why reintroduce something many considered long gone? many educators are finally realizing that there should be other options for students other than college. >> it's not simply an issue of sending kids to college. it's really preparing our

students to be ready for the world. and it's college and career. >> the trade unions and toyota gave most of the money to restart the program at washington. today there is a competition among auto dealers to secure good mechanics. many predict there will be a shortage of technicians in the near future. according to the bureau of labor and statistics, the nation's demand for auto mechanics is expected to grow about 17% from 2010 to 2020. adding 124,800 jobs. >> if you are succeeding in that area, you will be very well-compensated, job security is there, because like i said, the number of cars is not getting any smaller. >> someone starting out as a maintenance technician earns almost $18 an hour or $36,000. a more experienced master technician can earn six figures. that could be an attractive proposition for many of these students. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc7 news.

the belmont community is coming together today to celebrate a local team that almost clinched the little league world series. today's festivities for the belmont redwood shores all-stars gets underway at 10:00 at the belmont sports complex. it will include an award ceremony and an autograph session with team members and a barbecue. the team was only one win away from the little league world series when it fell to chula vista in the west regional championship game last month. in sports, this afternoon the raiders host jacksonville kick-off is at 1:25. then tonight at 5:30 the pregame hype will finally be over. the 49ers battle the rival seahawks in seattle. yesterday fifth-ranked stanford squared off against army at west point. it was a game that was closer than expected.

blue. i also want to tell but the kind. check out fairfield right now. up to 22 miles an hour. but santa rosa and novato where it's calm, that's where we are seeing the fog, the cool air pool and the fog develop in some of those valleys. here's a beautiful live shot from emeryville looking out toward the golden gate bridge. you do see some of the coastal clouds in the distance. but you also get to see a little bit of the blue skies that we have ahead for the day. it's currently 56 in san francisco. in san jose it's at degrees. let's take another look from the golden gate bridge there. you see more of those clear skies. but again, still fog in santa rosa, where it's currently 53 degrees. nona 55 and novato 50 degrees as well. milder in concord at 57 with clear conditions. from the east bay hills you still see some of the low clouds spilling into parts of the bay. so we really have a very mixed bag of conditions all around the

bay area right now. low clouds and patchy fog for the morning, but much more sunshine expected to. then even warmer days midweek. the water vapor image shows the cooler air mass moving through, but the areas of orange also show dryer air coming into the bay area. with the breeze we are going to see coastal clearing today and more sunshine. but it doesn't necessarily mean temperatures are coming up. with the cooler air you notice coming down maybe a degree or two in your neighborhood. in san jose 78. 76 in santa clara for the art and wine festival. look for 76 in redwood city, as well and 70 san mateo. san francisco downtown, warming up to 6 degrees this afternoon. and some low 80s for the north bay, as well as some upper 70s. 78 in petaluma. 83 in calistoga. look for 68 in berkeley. more sunshine in the east bay, as well. 72 in san leandro. pretty mild conditions in the east bay valleys with 85 for
