three women die at a house fire in pittsburg. what fire crews say could have made the difference between life and death. >> this is scary. this is really scary. possess pot. >> we have a look at the flood zones in colorado, and syria's first response to a deal hand over its chemical weapons. abc7 news at 5:00 starts now. >> overcome by smoke and flames, three women died inside their burning home in the east bay. fire officials say spending five dollars may have helped them survivor. the fire broke out today, and tonight the fire crews believe the women could have survived if

they did one thing. we're at the scene. cornell, this is an important lesson for all of us. reporter: oh, boy, it sure is. the cause of the fire is still under investigation tonight, and worst of all, firefighters say plenty of working smoke alarms were found inside this house, but sadly, the batteries had been removed. >> contra costa county firefighters were sifting through the rubble of this house in the wake of an intense fire which lit up the night sky. a neighbor and his son live in a back house behind the home and narrowly escaped. >> my neighbor start banging on my door, and i thought he wanted something else, and then was like, man, what's going on, and he said, it's a fire, it's a fire, and i just rush for my son, and i ran outside. >> three women living inside the burning home did not survive. overcome by the smoke and flames.

>> it's terrible, man. not going to be able to live right no more. three ladies passed away right next to our home. >> this is where the batteries should be and no batteries. >> the fire marshal shows us one of three nonworking smoke detectors in the house, on top of the kitchen counter. >> not only were the smoke alarms not installed on the walls throughout there were no battery at all. so these five dollar devices more than likely would have meant the difference between life and death. >> the fire spread to a next door house but was quickly put out. >> makes you realize how quickly it can move, and i'll be checking the battery on my fire alarm. >> fire officials believe three women who perished here were all related in pittsburg. abc7 news. >> ama: the chp is investigating a fat contractual crash that left a motorcyclists dead.

jose alfredo curiel died in the accident in oakland. officers arrived at to find canu yell on the road and there were also five other vehicles on the scene, one fully engulfed in flames. two people were arrested, one facing charges. >> new details in a deadly crash that killed an anon teenager, he died inned night when the car he was in slammed into a tree on hillcrest avenue. a 19-year-old man in the car was injured. investigators say the jaguar and a second car were speeding when the accident happened. the 18-year-old driver of the second car is cooperating with investigators. the death toll in colorado has risen to six tonight. some local red cross volunteers are in colorado to help withrelief efforts. one of them spoke by phone.
