during a terrorist attack in kenya. abc 7 news starts now. this is abc 7 news. >> rain on the last day of summer. the wet weather was more than just an inconvenience. thank you for joining us. this is an early edition of abc 7 at 5:00. rains started early this morning. a short time later it spread across most of the bay area. these drivers dealt with conditions and fog. taking you live outside here is a look from our camera. it is still cloudy. things have cleared up but when will the rain return? we have for you live team coverage on the weather that we have been experiencing throughout the day today. first we want to get to the l e

latest on your forecast to see what sunday will look like. >> we will take a look at live doppler 7 hd. it is notten usual to get a shower at this time of year. what might be unusual is the amount of rainfall that is received out of the storm system. you can see live doppler 7 hd. we are still seeing pretty moderate cells towards the livermore valley area. heading towards the east. east hill foothills to the east of san jose very heavy rainfall sitting down to coyote. saratoga light to moderate rain showers moving towards the campbell area. i want to show you how impressive some of the rainfall totals have been. san jose about a quarter of an

inch. here is a look at the actual storm system. the cold front that moved through around 11:00 started to move through central bay area there with moderate rain. now as you see at the 4:00 hour it is starting to push towards the east. we will take a look at our sunday forecast coming up. slick wet roads are blamed for a crash near santa rosa today. a semi jackknifed and hit a car. because it hasn't rained in a while the roads are slick with oil. the rain caught some offguard and caused serious flooding at the coliseum. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is there with the story.

>> reporter: the rain just stopped and the a's game is back on. mother nature didn't want to let it happen for a very long time today. >> we will play baseball this afternoon. >> reporter: a long rain delay where conditions were a soggy mess. field crew had to soak up rain puddles. leaks were everywhere you look. glen perkins tweeted this picture of the visitor's dugout flooded with water. >> there was water all over the field level. at the peak of the storm we probably got about an inch of rain in about 30 minutes. >> reporter: the rain delay no big deal for the gonzalez

family. in san francisco heavy rains tumbled two branches damages three unlucky cars parked underneath. >> in my apartment i hear what sounds like the cable cars coming up down the track. i hear explosions. >> reporter: left these tourists stranded. >> we thought it would be a round trip and we would be back in no time and then this happens. and it never rains in california. >> reporter: the heavy down pour caught lots of people offguard. >> it wasn't raining when i left the house today. i don't know. >> reporter: where is your umbrella? jewelry vendors kept their merchandise covered so it wouldn't get ruined. we found many packing up hoping

customers and the sun will return on sunday. back live here where storm clouds are moving out. this coliseum has had a lot of issues this year with twins relief pitcher said in his tweett that that was raw sewerage. the management tells us it is only water. good to know. the rain didn't dampen the spirits of people in san francisco taking part in this year's walk to end alzheimer's. they brought their running shoes and umbrellas. others brought on ponchos. more than 3,000 people were expected to participate in today's walk. just a few hours east it wasn't rain coming down but snow. the sierra saw its first flakes of the season today. heavenly mountain resort sent us these photos.

a somalian rebel group with links to al qaeda has claimed responsibility for the attack. abc news. authorities have tracked down a man they believe killed two women during a crash in san jose earlier this month. police arrested danny coleman yesterday for the deadly hit-and-run. two women were heading to work september 2 when the driver slammed into them and took off running. carmen zavala and cristina deleon were killed. a rough morning for a street cleaner in oakland. this happened about 6:00 this morning. officers say the street sweeper spun out. the driver was injured and his

an event honoring female veterans added a special remembererance for those killed at the navy yard. four veterans received the quilt made in pleasanton in recognition of services in the armed forces. the ceremony took a moment to remember those killed monday in washington, d.c. 12 member and the gunman who was a military contractor were killed. mother nature is wreaking havoc with the america's cup. officials were forced to postpone today's race because of shifting wind. the wind was blowing south. the course is set up for the wind to come in on a west southwest course meaning emirates team new zealand is a race away from taking home the

believe containment won't come until october 1. the delay is because of flames spreading in high elevation forests. the fires consumed about 400 square miles. fire officials say the warm weather continues to fuel the fire. it is now the third largest fire in state history. now, to storm ravaged mexico where a government official says a missing helicopter crashed and all aboard were found dead. the announcement comes as officials say the death toll from two hurricanes were up to 101 not counting those on the helicopter. 68 people remaining missing where a landslide buried half of the town. the hurricane left about 30,000 tourists stranded on the pacific coast while hurricane ingrid pommelled the east coast.

six people were scheduled to be arraigned today for a heated courthouse brawl caught on video. it happened yesterday at the courthouse in new york. those arrested face charges for riott in the first degree and contempt of court. police say the fight broke out after families and friends of a victim and a murder suspect started arguing. four people were hurt including two court officers. 49ers all pro lineback eer aldon smith is expected to suit up sunday despite being arrested for drunk driver. he was found unconscious in his truck with the engine running. he also had had marijuana in his car. after bailing himself out smith was back at practice yesterday. coach jim harbaugh says nfl policy means the league will decide if smith will be

suspended. a news report finds smart phone robberies are on the rise in berkeley. according to the san francisco chronicle mart phone robberies were a contributor to an increase in pedestrian robberies. police say they are hoping to crack down on the property theft by deploying more officers. they are also sending more officers to neighborhoods with high burglary rates. west hollywood is the first city in the nation to ban fir. the ban includes only items that are made to be worn such as shoes, gloves, hats and coats. second hand stores are also not effected. a shop can be charged with a misdemeanor if it receives at least three citations in a year. some are upset saying the ban doesn't reflect the image.

restoration of the san francisco bay but get their hands dirty cleaning up the shore line. >> we find everything from shoes, bottle caps. yeah, we find everything. even tires and stuff like that. >> the most common item they found each year, cigarette butts. volunteers collected more than 300,000 last year. efforts are moving forward to add the childhood home of steve jobs to a list of historical sites. the home is considered significant because it is where jobs and apple co-founder steve wozniak built the first 50 apple one computers in 1976. why a new homecoming queen says her win is a victim for anyone struggling with identity.

online. abc reporter has her story. >> reporter: they are the images generating a lot of buzz. a 33 week pregnant california woman lifting 75 pounds for exercise. >> weight lifting is not a joke. it's not for newbies. >> reporter: at 20 years old she started training for weight lifting figure competitions. >> lifting weight made me feel confident and good. >> reporter: lifting as much as 190 pounds before her pregnancy, seen here in these facebook pictures hoisting just 75 pounds out of an abundance of caution. photos generated more than 16,000 comments. some people in support and awe. you go girl. looking great. while others say that is dangerous. wow. i would not put my baby in danger. >> things have changed a lot in terms of what women can do in exercise. weight lifting is okay.

exit the bay area. rainfall totals range from about a quarter of an inch to half an inch in the north bay. we have more coming up tonight at 11:00. you can see on live doppler 7 hd all of this is starting to push towards the east. we are getting reports of lots of sunshine in the north bay. up towards clover dale also reporting a few light showers towards the hillsburg area. as i mentioned we have been watching this one cell move over towards tracy in the last 20 to 30 minutes. tracy getting pounded with heavy shower activity there and we will move a little to the south, just to the east of morgan hill. we have been seeing moderate rain developing towards mountainous areas there. you can see much of this has started to move out of the bay area. nice shot with sunshine. downtown san francisco right now. we have 64.

degrees. 77 for pi. wednesday a few more clouds. winds pick up tuesday afternoon and wednesday. a bit cooler those two days and we warm back into the 80s for next friday and saturday. >> fall wanted to come a day early. i like the rain, though. it's nice. a new app could help wild life enthusiasts track whales. starting today a team of scientists will test the app whale spotter fort about a week. blue and humpback whales visit the bay area every year to feed on cril. the problem is the bay is also a busy sea channel. whales and boats often collide. gps is now in just about every smart phone. there is one place it doesn't work well, indoors.

abc reporter took a walk with one of the entrepreneurs who is solving that problem. >> reporter: these blue suede shoes have a lot of miles on them but you will never know it because all of the walking is indoors. he is the ceo of indoor atlas. it works just like gps in the places where gps doesn't work. >> this is the most challenging place you can find. >> for your technology? >> this is the optimum place. >> reporter: inside this big steel building, a cell phone with a gps knows it is somewhere near downtown. he showed us how indoor atlas can tell exactly where it is to a meter. the secret is in your phone's built in compass. it picks up magnetic interference from anything metal around you.
