good tuesday morning, everyone. the siege at a mall in nairobi, kenya, entering its fourth day. >> we are seeing some of the first pictures outside of the mall since that attack on saturday. >> we're expecting to get an update when the president of kenya addresses his nation later today. we're going to begin our coverage right now with abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: after a tense day filled with gunfire and explosions, kenyan security forces say they've taken control of west gate shopping mall and secured the hostages. overnight, they were looking for hostages, terrorists and more dead bodies. 62 people were killed, 175 wounded. the terror began around noon this past saturday. a more than o dozen armed men took the mall's entrance. shoppers and employees ran for cover. >> it took the blood. i rubbed it on my face. so that when they come there, they see like, i'm dead.

>> reporter: among the dead, the nephew of kenyan president. >> my nephew and his fiancee were amongst those who died in this attack. >> reporter: the renowned poet, kofi awoonor. and a recent public health grad, elif yavuz, eight months pregnant. >> she was hilariously funny. she was unique. she really brought laughter and light to people's lives. >> reporter: the al qaeda-linked extremist group, al shabaab, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was retaliation for kenyan forces in somalia. al shabaab has been one of the most effective terror groups in attracting young, american men. >> i think it's surprising when you find out middle america has become a hot bed for terrorist recruiting. >> reporter: u.s. officials estimate as many as 50 americans have been recruited to the group over the last 6 years. with more than half traced back to minnesota's growing somali community. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. the situation there still

incredibly fluid. >> abc's kirit radia joining us now, this morning, from nairobi. the security forces say they are in charge. you're still hearing gunfire. i know we've had lots of reports of that. what is going on at the moment? >> reporter: yeah. it's rather confusing. we're hoping to hear from the president soon, to clarify these things. the police and the interior ministry say they have control of the building. but security forces are combing through the nooks and crannies of the massive shopping complex to make sure that no terrorists or other people are hiding in there. i think, perhaps, the confusion may be that they're in control of the building but they can't be certain to say that the operation is over. >> kirit, something else that got a lot of confusion surrounding around it is the number of fatalities. that number continuing to fluctuate. what's the latest we know? >> reporter: yesterday, the kenyan red cross said it was 69. and then, revised it to 62. that's been up and down the last

several hours or for the last day, i should say. right now, it stands at 62 people, some 175 injured, including 5 americans. one of them, a child. at this point, i think everybody expects those numbers are going to go up. once the kenyon authorities are able to go into that building now as they can and clear bodies out. they'll find them in areas they weren't able to find them before. and we'll find out if people were killed during that final siege when the kenyan troops went in and confronted the terrorists. >> kirit radia, reporting live for abc this morning from nairobi, kenya. thank you. stay with abc news for up-to-date information on the mall terror attack in kenya. we have live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." this morning, two men have been charged in the mass shooting in chicago, which left 13 people hurt including a 3-year-old. police say both men played major roles in the shooting but neither pulled the trigger. it happened on a basketball court late last week. it's believed to be gang-related. firefighters in southern california are battling a raging

wildfire on the move. about 20 miles east of los angeles. the fire has burned at least 50 acres in the angeles national forest. one street has been evacuated with the flames lapping dangerously close to homes, like this one. this picture tweeted by a neighbor. so far, there's no word yet on the cause of the fire. despite the looming budget crisis in washington, fema is promising that relief money for colorado flood victims will not stop flowing. vice president biden got a look at the vast damage yesterday. it is spread across nearly 2,000-square miles. nearly 2,000 homes damaged or destroyed, along with more than 200 miles of highway and 50 bridges. >> once all these cameras are gone, fema and the red cross are still going to be here till we make you whole. >> it's really hard. it's clearly very devastating. and i'm overwhelmed. >> 79-year-old woman whose house was swept away becomes the eighth victim of that flooding.

at least six people still remain unaccounted for. 16,000 people have applied for fema relief. president obama is in new york, set to deliver an address this morning to the opening of the united nations general assembly. terror attacks, chemical weapons and nuclear safeguards are on the agenda for the world leaders. among them will be iran's new president. he's indicated that he'd like to revive relations with the united states, which has been frozen since the iran hostage crisis back in 1979. a lawsuit by michael jackson's mother will soon be in the hands of a jury. after nearly five months of testimony, the case is winding down. and jurors will soon decide whether concert promoter aeg was negligent in hiring dr. conrad murray. murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. for supplying a lethal dose to jackson. the jackson family is seeking damages that could top $1 million. new bedetails about the winner of last week's powerball

lottery. probably most important, he's choosing to remain anonymous. officials announced that the man has cashed his ticket. they did not say whether he chose cash option or if he's spreading his payments over 30 years. it was only the second time, he says, he had ever played the lottery. >> we have to check out the dealerships in south carolina. see who rolled out with like a rolls or something. >> we're so jealous. time, now, for the weather across the nation. some scattered showers across much of the northwest, changing into snow in those higher elevations. showers and thunderstorms, from kentucky to the gulf coast. the orlando area can expect heavy downpours. >> upper 90s in the desert southwest. 90s across much of texas. high 70s in the southeast. and low 70s in the mid-atlantic region. in northern maine, it will struggle to get into the 60s. could it be true? a fast food chain will start serving a healthier version of an american favorite? >> i like the sound of that. and five-star fake. online reviews are more popular than ever. but who is really writing what you're reading?

cracking down. here's abc's chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis. >> reporter: we're using them for everything. from planning dream vacations to which doctors to visit. but according to regulators, a huge number of online reviews are complete phonies. do you feel any sense of guilt or anything? >> no because i feel like these people are going to pay somebody to write a review anyways. it might as well just be me. >> reporter: kathy is 17 years old and says she's written hundreds of glowing reviews for 4 bucks a pop. how long does it take you to write a typical review? >> about three minutes to write a review. >> reporter: by some estimates, as many as 30% of the reviews you see online are complete fakes. from restaurants to hotels to toys. and new york's attorney general is fighting back. >> we're paying or just ordering their employees and the employees' friends and families to write phony reviews to inflate their profile. >> reporter: but getting a nod

night in oakland. the victim had been shot. no word from investigators if there is any connection to the other incident. in san francisco police are investigating a fatal shooting in ocean view district that happened at 10:00 last night at randolph street. the man was shot along a muni metro route. service was rerouted. investigators have not made any arrests. >> another vigil is held for the boy hit and killed by a car while riding his bicycle. he was riding the bicycle against traffic when he was hit yesterday. officials at the middle school where he was a student immediately notified fellow students and brought in grove counselors. >> extremely sad. the young boy was very popular and well-known. >> they were all good f
