>> among them is a two-year old girl. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield joins us from the sunset district. amy if. >> the fire chief just toured the home and says you can still hear the smoke detectors going off. she says it is hard to say why this fire turned so tragic. the 2 1/2-year-old was on the top floor and sheeping and killed with her father sleeping in the basement trying to stay away from the child because he wasn't feeling well and didn't want to pass it along to the child. the child's grandfather was on the top floor and is in critical condition. the mother got out okay. she just finished working a late shift and was up, eating something, but be else was asleep and could not get out in time. >> everyone is hurting. this is not what we are in the business of doing, we are in the business of saving lives but sometimes this is the outcome. we had a rescue squad on the side performing search-and-rescue and the mom

crash along 101 at the expressway in the northbound direction. southbound side is still clear but you could see spectator slowing in that area. we have more on that in a little bit. across the bridges, golden gate bridge is eight minutes, and across the bay bridge, that is wide open at 10 minutes and the san mateo bridge is 15 minutes and from our emeryville camera you can see the traffic is running well but it is busy. >> the father of man accused of fatally stabbing a dodgers fan claims his son acted in self-defense. the 21-year-old michael montgomery is charged with killing a 4-year-old jonathan denver during a fight after wednesday night's giants game at 3rd and harrison a few blocks from the ballpark. the suspect's father said the victim hit his son over the head with a chair.

lawsuit for $300,000 in medical bills. this afternoon the man accused in the shooting death of a san francisco state student is scheduled to be arraigned. 930-- the 30-year-old nikhom thephakaysone will be charged for killing justin valdez getting off a streetcar on monday. detectives found several guns including assault weapons, $20,000 in cash, and survivalist gear at the suspect's home. police say nikhom thephakaysone took out his weapon several times on muni. police say he confronted other people before getting on the train. >> he pulled the gun on at least one other person in the area but the person did not report it until after this took place and they get home. >> police still don't know the motive. both men attended san francisco state but police say there

>> live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> breaking news now from san francisco, a fire at a home in the sunset district claimed the life of a little girl and her father. >> abc7 news aamy hollyfield is talking to investigators and joins us with that report. >> firefighters say they are having a tough morning in business of saving lives and they are having a tough time coming to terms with the fact this morning they could not. there is a 2 1/2-year-old girl

in the top floor of the home asleep killed in the fire. her grandfather was up here and is in very critical condition. her father was asleep down in the basement and he was killed. her mother managed to get out. firefighters are trying to figure why this turned so traumatic. the home did have working smoke detectors. >> often when we have fatalities there are not working smoke detectors but i took a tour and you could still hear the smoke detectors going off. very sad morning for us. >> firefighters say the home was very secure and it took them some time to cut their way in, with a metal gate at front door. it is well insulated newly remolds with new winds that were thick and they did not break in the heat like old windows and all the fire and smoke was trapped along with the four people and they think it spread so quickly from the bottom to

the top through the stare s way and they are trying to figure out why two people were killed and one was so critically injured. they are looking for a cause. investigators are here on the scene ruling out scenario after scenario and they have ruled out arson. >> more now on another breaking news story. the fire crews from at least five cities are on the scene of this hay fire on the interstate 0 -- 500. crews from six area stations are coming to fight the fire. officials say they are going to let the fire burn itself out and it could burn for a day or more. no word on what sparked the fire. >> we will start with traffic as we have a fatal accident. leyla gulen? >> we have a report of a fatal accident and we are trying to

wait further details on this. right now, we are hearing that glenwood avenue is shut down and other streets in the area are closed down. traffic will be re-routed in the area so, again, it is a report of a fatal crash at glenwood avenue. as we head into san jose this crash is cleared to the shoulder northbound 101 a four to five car pileup and looking at slow traffic in the area although everything has been pushed over and all lanes have re-opened and as we look at mass transit, good news, the eastbound f line is restored after an early accident. here is a picture of walnut creek where we have a report of a stalled vehicle but as you make the push to walnut creek and highway 24, it is starting to look busy. >> we will start with our red flag warning that continues until 3:00 with the wins above 1,000' that could be gusty and dry. santa cruz mountains and east

defending himself when he stabbed the dodgers fan after a game at at&t park on wednesday night. the 21-year-old michael montgomery is facing a homicide charm. the in us say he stabbed to death a 24-year-old jonathan denver after two groups got in a fight over the giants and dodger s rivalry. detectives looked for the weapon and video from cameras at the nearby buildings. extra security was added to the game last night. a state assembly member spoke about what happened. >> unfortunately we have another act of senseless violence that is appalling to all of us and we have to come together as a broader community that kept up against any of that. >> the suspect's dad told the newspaper that his son and friends were hit without warping and hit by a chair in the head and defend himself by stabbing democrat verify. another purpose was taken into
