his insurance company recently stopped paying for full-time care at a rehab center. the family is suing the dodgers to help pay for medical costs. a fire broke out last night in the giants clubhouse at at&t park just after 7:30 witnesses saw smoke coming from the king street side of the stadium. it was caused by a large commercial dryer which had burst into flames in the laundry room. there was some smoke and some water damage but giants officials say everything is okay. new this morning, authorities are investigating a two-alarm fire in oakland that broke out overnight. it happened at a house on 79th avenue just before midnight.

it was brought under control about 20 minutes later. authorities say no one lived at the house but they did find a squatter inside. no injuries were reported while the cause of the fire is unknown, investigators say it appears it started in the garage. a new report suggests radio problems may have led to the deaths of 19 firefighters killed an arizona wildfire. the crew died while responding to the fire on june 30th. the 116-page report cites technical problems with the firefighters' radios and poor communication between the men and their support staff. that fire topped 2,000 degrees in some spots which is the same temperature as lava. the firefighters' families were allowed to review the report before it was made public. >> it is everything you would have expected. anger, frustration, and just an overcoming sense of loss.

it was a very emotional meeting both for the families and actually for us as we were there to try to respond to their questions. >> that fire destroyed more than 100 homes and burned 13 square miles. huge crowds are expected for the second day of a rave today at the shoreline amphitheater. it's called beyond wonderland bay area and there will be a large police presence this year as mountain view police enforce zero tolerance for drugs. abc 7 news has details on day one. >> reporter: plenty of partiers dressed up in costumes or dressed down for a night of extended dancing poured into beyond wonderland. just after sunset, the light show magnified the spectacle for a crowd organizers say will peak at 25,000. the biggest concern for one resident was traffic. >> when they have concerts here, it's hard to get to the dog park because there's only one access.

developing news out of nigeria where at least 50 students are dead after an attack at a college early this morning. school officials say islamic il mants gmilitants while the students slept. school officials say the militants torched classrooms. at least 1,000 students were able to escape. if we get more information about this during our newscast, we will will bring it to you. this morning, kenyans and the military are paying their respects to the victims of the

terrorist shopping center attack that happened last weekend. newly released video shows soldiers questioning and searching people inside the mall. gunfire can be heard as customers scrambled to safety. 67 people died in that attack by somali terror organization. 61 people remain unaccounted for. this morning officials announced another arrest. 12 people have now been arrested in connection with the attack. three have been freed. cnn is reporting the terrorists actually rented out a store in that mall a year ago. this morning syria says it will fully cooperate with united nations inspectors assigned to destroy its chemical weapons stockpile. however, syrian diplomats also add their government will not accept any transition peace plan that excludes president bashar al assad. the syrian opposition has repeatedly said it will not take part in any transition government that includes him.

anti-virus software pioneer john mcafee said his new invention will make the internet hack free. he spoke last night. his new company called future tense is described as a place where you can exchange information that cannot be accessed by the nsa or anyone else. mcafee talked about his legal troubles with the belize government and described one of the places where he hid from police. >> one of them was a hole in the sand that was covered with plywood and sand packed on top of that and a tiny box on top of that to put my head. i piled old wood, paint cans, garbage of every sort. i was there for 24 hours while police were no more than five feet from my head. >> mcafee is wanted as a person of interest in a fatal shooting last year in belize. microsoft has a deal for

you. the company is offering owners of an apple iphone 5 or iphone 4s for a trade. trade them in for a minimum of $200 at microsoft stores. people are not thrilled with the fingerprint scanner and the operating system. b.a.r.t. will meet with one of two employee unions in their ongoing labor dispute. negotiations will seiu representatives are set to begin shortly at 9:30 this morning. yesterday representatives from the transit union met with b.a.r.t. officials in oakland. one of the reps told nbc 7 news there is nothing new to report. b.a.r.t. says the two sides remain $112 million apart. there are negotiating sessions scheduled every day through the end of the cooling off period. the dates with hash marks there are the days that b.a.r.t. will

area more like tonight but it's already bringing some rain up to eureka and crescent city and heads-up in the south tahoe area, there is a red flag warning in effect. gusty winds up to 50 miles an hour throughout the day. be careful if you are driving to and from the bay area. golden gate bridge camera. look at that. we can see the bridge right now. socked in this morning. fog starting to dissipate. there is some patchy fog especially along the coast. it's currently 60 in san francisco. 62 in oakland. and in san jose. we'll head to san jose where we actually see sunshine and some clear conditions. the farther south you are, the sunnier it will be for your neighborhood. it's currently 61 in santa rosa. 59 in novato and also clear in livermore at 62. looking down toward san francisco, we can see some of these clouds as well moving in from the north bay. here's what you can expect.

during the morning, patchy, dense, coastal fog. and then clouds will bring us cooler weather today and even a chance of light rain for the north bay, a few showers for most everyone tomorrow morning. i'll show you what you can expect. the radar satellite image shows this front moving toward us. that's bringing us a chance of light rain. and the forecast animation model shows how it will play out. looks like today in the north bay, 50-50 chance of getting light rain and now about 3:00 in the afternoon down to santa rosa and definitely along the coast and then not too much for the rest of the bay area throughout the day until tomorrow morning. so wet commute possibly with some light scattered showers. parts of the north bay and possibly along the peninsula coast but we're talking a tenth of an inch max in most locations. more in the north bay. and then by monday evening, pretty much all clear and then dry into the rest of the week. i do want to mention how much rain we've actually gotten. people have asked.

where congress is still deeply divided over a new budget bill and midnight deadline to avert a government shutdown. among those who would be hit the hardest, government workers would be told don't bother showing up for work. we go to capitol hill for the very latest. >> reporter: overnight house republicans doubling down holding firm on their demand for a one-year delay of obama care as the price for keeping the government running. >> this is a program that is too expensive to afford. delay obama care. >> reporter: the house vote pushes the government even closer to the edge of its first shutdown in 17 years. what if democrats said we're going to shut down the government if we don't get immigration reform, gay rights or gun control. >> reporter: the biggest question in washington is not will the government shutdown but who should be played if it does? in the middle of it all is 27-year-old maria.

washington is asking. harry reid is already calling the house vote pointless. this is all going to go back to the house and that deadline is stick ticking midnight monday. >> this morning former president bill clinton is weighing in on the showdown in congress and the law at the center of the fight. clinton was in office the last time the government shut down back in 1995 and '96. in an interview on "this week" clinton says the republican party is begging for america to fail by rooting for the demise of president obama's affordable care act. >> what they are desperate for this bill to fail because if it's not a failure, everything they've been telling us since 1980 the way government is run, they so badly want it to fail. can you remember a time in your lifetime when a major political party was sitting around begging for america to pafail? i don't know what's going to happen. i'll be shocked if it fails.

>> clinton says he's optimistic that with time the health care law will grow in popularity and americans will ultimately be glad that it is there. a new poll finds most voters want to put the brakes on california's high-speed rail project. the usc/"l.a. times" survey found 52% of people say the project should be halted. only 43% think it should go forward. the number is higher in the pai area with 51% of voters supporting the project. the majority of voters want the project to go back on the ballot. ed lee has 90 days to make an offer to host the next america's cup and he plans to do so however location could be a concern with golden state warriors hoping to build a waterfront arena at pier 32 which was the site for this year's teams and there are

concerns over the cost with san francisco expected to be left between 3 million 5 to 5 in the red for hosting this year's race. no location has been committed to yet saying it will be a group decision. tests are under way to determine how dangerous electronic devices are to a plane system. cell phones can sometimes interfere with the plane's smoke alarm and laptops could disrupt pilots' radio communications but engineers device has brought down a plane. >> it's not necessarily that a phone can bring down an airplane. that's not really the issue. the issue is interfering with the airplane and causing more work for pilots during critical phases of flight. >> new planes are being designed with technology that counter any interference. this month a government industry group studying the subject will give findings and recommendations to the federal

aviation administration. a new report finds scores on the s.a.t. college entrance exam remain steady but many students are unprepared for college. the report finds average scores in reading, math and writing were the same this year as last. but only 48% of test takers reached the s.a.t. benchmark score. 1,550, which indicates likelihood to enroll in a four-year school and complete their degree and the report finds 46% of those that took tests this year are minorities, that's the highest minority representation in history and in california, 57% of graduates seniors took the exam and that's the highest number ever for the state. coming up, uncovering mysteries deep under the ocean. the camera scientists are using to explore an underwater volcano and creatures that live on it. and take a live look from our tower camera.

area. >> reporter: this university of washington video shows a research ship heading for one of the world's deepest construction sites. >> they're putting in a cable ocean observatory on the bottom of the ocean. >> 60% of the earth's volcanic eruptions happen deep in the ocean water. this is being lowered into a hot spot 300 miles off the oregon coast as part of the ocean observatory initiative launching a new era of ocean exploration. they provided this underwater video. mary miller with explore tour yum was on that exhibition blogging and doing live updates to tell the public weighs goiha on. >> you see octopus and fish and shrimp with underwater features where you get this hot fluid from under the ocean floor and it is feeding microbes and

supporting communities of life that we didn't know existed 30 years ago. >> reporter: this is the top of an active volcano that erupted two years ago. you can see the different type of lava flows and parts of a collapsed lava basin. even in this desolate environment, there's life. a national science foundation is spending almost a quarter billion dollar to cover this area with a network of sophisticated cameras and instruments. the system is being built by a remotely operated submarine controlled from the ship above. it takes three to four people from the canadian scientific submersible committee to run it along with engineers. >> make sure there's no kinks in the cable and electricity is flowing and testing and monitoring all of the time. a mile under the ship is amazing. >> reporter: they will eventually lay 557 miles of wire and cable to send live pictures and data back to laboratories on land. the system is expected to be fully operational in early 2015
