shutdown. and the ripple effects are being felt across the nation. >> despite the growing sense of anger and frustration on the part of americans, no new talks are scheduled. >> the republicans are set to try a plan that would fund only certain parts of the government. abc's tahman bradley is live at the capitol for us this morning. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning, diana and john. there's no sign of compromise here on capitol hill. and it doesn't look like anything is going to get done. in fact, both sides are bracing for this shutdown to go on for a while. meanwhile, the public is fed up. the government shutdown enters its second day with no end in sight. across the country, anger is growing. >> i think it's crazy. i think the whole holding the government hostage over obama care is ridiculous. >> a bunch of jerks running the show up there. >> reporter: 800,000 federal workers will stay home again today without pay. about 6,700 of them civilian workers at this military base in central new jersey. >> they told us until further

notice, you know, you're furloughed. when we call you, come on back in. >> reporter: local officials are worried about the economic impact. >> as these people start losing their paychecks, they're not going to spend the money in town. >> reporter: according to one estimate, the government shutdown will cost taxpayers $300 million a day. $12.5 million an hour. and $1.6 billion a week. but that price tag hasn't brought congress closer to a deal. last night, in a new strategy, house republicans tried to fund some parts of the government, like national parks and veterans benefits. but the measures were defeated by democrats who want a full government spending bill without changes to president obama's health care law. >> they took hostages by shutting down the government. and now, they're releasing one hostage at a time. >> reporter: as washington braces for a long shutdown, some republicans now admit it's time to put a clean funding bill on the floor. >> i think the shutdown's a bad idea. >> reporter: and even bigger crisis is creeping closer.

on october 17th, the country will run out of money to pay its bills unless congress raises the debt ceiling. >> tahman bradley, live in washington. thank you. and now, to one of the most touching images from the shutdown. veterans, most of whom had served in world war ii, arrived in washington, d.c. they didn't know the memorial erected in their honor was closed. >> with the help from a few lawmakers the 100 or so vets removed the barriers and were able to walk in. one of the vets from mississippi says this is probably the last trip he'll make to washington. and seeing that memorial was awesome. just awesome. more consequences of the shutdown to note now. the military is closing all 246 of its commissaries on its installations around the world. the commissaries provide tax-free groceries to about 12 million people including military personnel, their families and retirees. >> the people would see their grocery bills claim significantly. and the nation's service academies have suspended all their sports teams.

that means no football practice at army, navy and air force. the games coming this saturday, are in jeopardy. army is supposed to play boston college. and air force is supposed to play navy. the decision whether or not to go ahead with those games will be made tomorrow. that takes us to our facebook question of the day. how has the government shutdown impacted you? lots of people weighing in at this. join the discussion at atmfans.com. triggering the shutdown was a rollout of the key component of obama care. despite house republican efforts it happened yesterday. the opening of the much-anticipated health insurance marketplace. but not without serious glitches. nearly 3 million americans signed on to the website in one day and created a mammoth online traffic jam. >> i hit the almost hour and a half mark that i just gave up at that point. >> so, are you looking forward to doing it again or not? >> yeah. yeah. i'm excited. i'm probably going to get some snacks down and a drink and so forth. >> common complaints include not

enough details about the plans, high deductibles and a lot of restrictions on which doctors you can visit and how often. a developing story from north florida, where the jacksonville airport has reopened after a bomb threat. the bomb squad removed two suspicion devices. one that officials described as a destructive component. it was taken offsite to make sure it would not explode during evacuation. and departing travelers missed their flights. this woman was on the terminal. >> didn't really hear too much. everybody started running. a lot of people that worked at the counters started ducking behind where the packages go. and just everybody started running, saying to get out. >> the airport was reopened after five hours. authorities have not confirmed if they took anyone into custody or if any arrests have been made. in kenya, two more bodies have been pulled from the rubble at the mall that was nearly destroyed at a terrorist attack last month. in new video shows what looks like a war zone. the stench of rotting food is

overwhelming. they're accusing security forces of smashing display cases and stealing valuables. so far, the death toll is nearly 70 people and likely to rise. israel's prime minister has made it clear the does not buy the so-called charm offensive being put forward by iran. benjamin netanyahu called iran's new president a wolf in sheep's clothing. and netanyahu declared that israel would do whatever it takes to keep iran from getting nuclear weapons, even if it means standing alone. in colorado, a candlelight vigil was held for five members of one family, killed in a rockslide at a national forest on monday. hundreds of mourners turned out for the vigil. the lone survivor, a 13-year-old girl. she was shielded by the crashing rocks by her father. she is still recovering in the hospital. the government shutdown is hitting not only the paychecks but also the personal lives of government workers. these sailboats were ordered tied to the docks as part of the

shutdown. ironically, they were supposed to be rented to a group of current and former government workers. last night, the operator ended up taking the group out for free on a private marina. warm and sunny throughout the nation's eastern third. but plan on storms from the great lakes south to the gulf. showers and snow in the northwest. to high and dry in the southwest. >> 80-plus degree temperatures from omaha and kansas city to the northwest. 90s across the south. chillier 50s and 60s from seattle to billings. what's apple up to now? a new hire at the company, has more people wondering about the future plans. motorcycle madness. new details about a wild road rage incident. we're learning more about the people involved and the serious injuries to one driver. and hero of the day. dramatic rescue caught on camera as a police officer pulls a woman from a burning car.

and welcome back. stock futures are down this morning, despite the markets ending the first day of the government shutdown in good shape. traders sent the dow and the other major averages higher. the belief right now among investors seemed to be that the shutdown won't cause long-term disruption of the economy. the state of new york is suing wells fargo. it's aimed at forcing compliance with the national mortgage case settlement. wells fargo claims it is abiding by the settlement. new york has leveled similar action against bank of america. and apple is giving insight to the future product plans. the tech giant brought a

long-time cable executive onboard as an engineering director. it's leading more speculation that apple is developing a set-top cable box and television set. the auto industry rolling out its september car sales numbers. they show an overall drop of 4% from a year ago. the only major manufacturers who posted gains were ford, up 6%. and chrysler, up 1%. analysts point out that the usually strong labor day weekend sales counted towards august's numbers this year. finally, check out the 2014 chevy black ops silverado. because of its body armor, it's being called a survival kit on four wheels. it comes with gas masks, first aid kid, shovel, water tank, fuel canister, among the other items. no word on its price or when it goes on sale. i don't know about the items but i like the truck. looks cool. >> are we burying bodies in the woods? what's that about? >> i don't know. but i'll try it. looks pretty cool. >> it is a cool-looking car. >> let's hope we don't need the

morning drive to work. watch out for rain and mountain snow, from washington and parts of oregon to the southwest montana and western wyoming areas. also expect some slowdowns due to rain along the central gulf coast. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in houston and new orleans. that's due to lightning storms. it could take days before new york city police unravel all of the details behind a shocking case of road rage, even though most of the incident was caught on camera. >> the video shows a group of motorcycle riders surrounding an suv, chasing it. then beating the suv driver after he runs over one of the bikers. so far, the motorcyclists are getting most of the blame. but the injured biker's wife says the suv driver's at fault. >> he is paralyzed from the waist down. his spine was broken in two different places. and there's no hope for that, as well. >> right now, two of the motorcyclists are in custody. police say they expect to make more arrests. caught on camera in california. the rescue of a woman from a

burning car. a police cruiser's dash cam caught the dramatic moment when a police officer dove into the car to save a 22-year-old driver. she had collided head-on into a power pole. at one point, passersby also tried to help. the woman is recovering in the hospital. a dozen people have the coast guard to thank for saving them in the gulf of mexico after their catamaran sank. the crews found them in the water with their life jackets on. everyone was pulled out of the water and brought safely to shore. another to show you. this one from down under. a month-old humpback whale there getting caught in the webbing. the problem for the rescuers was momma. she was making things difficult by staying close to the calf. it took two hours to free the whale and then mom and child went south. "captain phillips" tells the

story of richard phillips and the maersk alabama. now, they're suing the ship's owner and other company for $50 million. they say the ship was sailed into dangerous waters, despite several warnings to save money. the case will be heard in alabama in december. in tucson, arizona, a 911 dispatcher may have landed herself in legal hot water after laughing at a man calling in an emergency. lallo delgado called 911 when his car and his girlfriend caught on fire. but he says the woman's initial reaction was laughter. all of it on tape. >> is your girlfriend still on fire? >> no. >> no. okay. is your vehicle still on fire? >> it's hilarious, huh? >> is your vehicle still on fire? >> i just heard your smirk. >> i'm sorry.

it wasn't regarding that, okay. >> yeah. i just heard you laugh. >> the sheriff's department admits they messed up. but that response time was not compromise. a dispatcher is still on the job, pending the outcome of an investigation. a new legal headache for lance armstrong, stemming from his doping scandal. abc news has learned that armstrong is being compelled to testify under oath, for the first time since admitting he used legal drugs. that testimony is for an insurance that seeks to recoup millions of dollars it paid armstrong. armstrong could settle the case and avoid testifying. time, now, for sports. hockey is back. and so is postseason baseball. >> fans in pittsburgh going wild for the first playoff game in 20 years. here's neil everett at espn. >> good morning, america. i'm neil everett, at the "sportscenter" desk in los angeles. wild card baseball on tuesday. and what a wild night for pittsburgh fans. their first postseason game since 1992.

and they got into johnny cuedo's head in an hurry. and later in tinning, russell martin has what byrd had. and cuedo didn't have anything. cuedo was gone in a hurry. bottom seven, the pirates up 5-1. and martin believes if some is good, more is better. his second of the game. pittsburgh goes on to win 6-2. they'll face st. louis next in a best of five. we're going to chicago. the nhl season began on tuesday. and the blackhawks raised the stanley cup banner. your playoff mvp from a year ago, patrick kane, puts chicago up 2-1. and then, mikhael grabovski. and it looked like washington was going to kill the celebratory buzz going on.

the fire started 45 minutes ago. firefighters found flames and smoke in the at tick. firefighters are working on that. they knocked down the films in -- flames in 15 minutes. the owner was up and heard a noise and caused 9-1-1. pg&e is dealing with the power issues. firefighters called in the red cross but the farmer will not be kept out of the home for long, maybe only a day. firefighters are on the scene and expected to be here for a little while longer in san jose . >> a new development in bart contract talks, the unions say they are waiting for a response from the transit agency on the new counter proposal to bart's offer. the union negotiators say they sent the proposal to bart last might and are staying tightlipped over what the proposal contains and are threatening to strike
