a possible abduction attempt has schools on alert in the peninsula. thanks for joining us. i'm cheryl jennings. >> i'm kristen sze. >> a man tried to get a young student into his pickup truck in redwood city. matt is live at john f. kennedy middle school where this happened. >> reporter: school officials told me they talked with students about what happened here yesterday, as police are trying to track down this suspect. parents went the extra mile today getting their kids to class at kennedy middle school in redwood city. yesterday morning a student said he was walking to class in this

parking lot when a man in a pickup truck stopped, offered him marijuana and asked him to get in. the student immediately went to the office to report the incident. school officials called police. >> it's scary. it's scary because my child comes here. you never know. >> reporter: the redwood city school district sent out an e-mail to parents saying what happened. kennedy middle school officials called home and teachers spoke to students in class about the incident reminding them what they should do if they see or experience something suspicious. >> i always tell them to go to the office. >> to be office. >> after this news are you more cautious? >> yeah. >> reporter: redwood city police are looking for video hoping the suspect and his truck were caught on camera in the area. parts are not taking any chances. are you doing anything different. >> well, i'm bringing my kid to school. dropping him off in front of the

school. >> reporter: he normally walks? >> sometimes. but not anymore. >> reporter: police say they are also trying to put together a sketch so they can get the public's help in tracking down this suspect. matt keller, abc 7 news. the san francisco man accused of killing an sf state student is in court. the 30-year-old pled not guilty this morning for shooting 20-year-old justin valdez after the two got out a muni streetcar last week. the judge denied bail. prosecutors say the suspect is a threat to the public and could kill again. investigators say they found survivalist gear and an arsenal of weapons and $20,000 in cash after searching his residence. ♪ the catholic church invited the community to pay tribute to the men and women of all faiths, police, fire and emergency

response people this morning. noncatholic chaplains were also invited to bless the people who the church considered guardian angels. at store in union square has been hit by smash and grab thieves. a display window at ice breaker clothing store on post street is boarded up. investigators say somebody broke the window overnight and grabbed everything inside. police got an alarm call around 11:30 last night. the store manager across the street says his store was also hit twice in the last month. >> smashed one of our windows, came in, stole stuff, came back, exactly a week later, did a different window. another handful of stuff he stole. he's in, he's out, only take himself about a minute. >> the manager says surveillance cameras captured the suspect wearing dark clothing, a hood and a hat.

police are reviewing the video to try to identify him. >> b.a.r.t. riders are waiting to see whether b.a.r.t. and its unions can reach a deal before threatened strike which could happen a week from friday. amy joins us live in oakland where those talks are getting underway. any progress yet? >> reporter: yes. they're starting at 11:00, cheryl, they tell us they are closer than when the cooling off period began. we asked are you close enough? they said they don't know. today the bargaining teams plan to tackle some big issues -- money, wages, pensions and health care. and that is where it gets pretty sticky. >> the progress i can report right now, is that we did make an offer to the district yesterday. we will not characterize the details of that offer until we get a response from the district. >> i don't think it serves any purpose to go round by round on

update. we want to keep a free exchange of ideas going. let's hope we can find a negotiated settlement before the strike deadline. >> reporter: this was the scene back in july, b.a.r.t. workers on strike. this is before this cooling off period began. b.a.r.t. unions say they do not want to strike, but say if there's no contract they could hit the picket line next friday. not a lot of time left. at this point what we do know is they can't agree on how long the contract should be. at this point the union is insisting on a three-year contract. b.a.r.t. management wants a four-year contract. so they still have a lot to discuss. live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. there are negotiating sessions between b.a.r.t. and the union scheduled every day except sunday through that 60-day cooling off period that ends next thursday, the last day talks are scheduled. day two of the government shutdown. a white house official says

president obama has invited congressional leaders to the white house for a meeting today. katie is live in the newsroom. >> reporter: that meeting scheduled for 2:30 this afternoon. house speaker john boehner's office says it's a sign that the president may be backing down. but an obama advisor says the president will be urging them to pass a spending bill. >> this morning the fight over the affordable care act and who is responsible for the shutdown continues on the house floor. >> president obama has already bullied the house by threatening to veto these important bills to to protect our veterans, keep d.c. schools open and preserve and open our national parks. >> this is day two of the affordable care act. the sun came up in the east. no one was forced to go to the post office for the prostate exam. >> reporter: across the country people are angry. >> we want to work! >> reporter: in the south bay, quiet shock.

fire investigators think a fire broke out in the attic of a house this morning. attic had been converted into a religion room. the homeowner and three family members, all adults, got out safely. prosecutors are considering whether to file criminal charges in the death of a young asiana airlines crash victim hit by a san francisco fire truck. the district attorney has a report from the sheriff's investigation. the fire department called it a tragic accident. the 16-year-old was one of three teens from china who died after the crash after san francisco

airport on july 6th. she had been covered with firefighting foam when a fire truck drove over her. autopsy findings presented to her family this week revealed she had fatal injuries to her head and pelvis. there may be an odd smell lingering around newark for the next few days. evergreen oil is doing maintenance work on its refinery on smith avenue and cherry street. the work will continue through tomorrow. crews are cleaning the refinery's equipment. there are homes nearby. the company said it will do its best to reduce the smell. there's been a legal setback for a group of surfers and environmentalists who sued to regain access to martin's beach in san mateo county. the road to the beach has been off limits since 2008 when the entire property was bought to a new owner. protesters call that gate illegal. our media partners at the san jose "mercury news" report that a judge will likely rule in favor of the owner, the

a mountain lion warning on the peninsula after a big cat was spotted early this morning bay homeowner in the burlingame hills. police say the mountain lion was seen in the backyard on margarita avenue, but was last seen running towards skyline boulevard near highway 280. if you hear the wail of sirens along the san mateo coast about an hour ago no worries, it was just a test. the county ran its first monthly test this morning since upgrading the warning sirens last month. the new system allows officials to make voice announcements and continually self-monitors and alerts technicians to any malfunctions. the tsunami warning sirens cover 30 miles of coastline. if you ever got tired at a restaurant for waiting and waiting for your server to bring you your check, a new app may be the ticket.

sunny and mild this afternoon a bit breezier tomorrow. as i mentioned, high fire danger from thursday evening into saturday morning. satellite radar composite image shows a dip in the jet stream to our north a pool of cool air moving over us it is reinforcing this breezier pattern as the jet stream is flowing almost directly over us. setting the maps in motion, continuing through the evening into tomorrow. it will remain breezy. skies will remain clear. once again breezy. with a strong and increasing winds, the low humidity and the increasing temperatures over the next couple of days, we have high fire danger. by friday, the center of high pressure fixing itself up to the north that will give us a dry, gusty, warm flow of air from land to sea. high temperatures will be on the rise friday and saturday. for today, we'll see highs there the afternoon in the south bay in the mid to upper 70s. 75 in san jose and the peninsula. breezy and mild on the coast.
