it's a hold on to your hats morning. 5:00. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm matt keller. many of you may be waking up to damage outside this morning. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield begins our coverage in diablo. amy? >> yeah, matt. winds have died down significantly but look at the damage that it did overnight. look at this tree that came down in the unincorporated community of diablo outside of alamo

leading into the diablo country club. there are homes along this road but we're told there is another way in and out so they aren't completely stuck but quite a mess to deal with this morning. and it didn't just happen here. the winds took out a few trees in the bay area overnight. look at this one that happened in oakland. this is skyline and redwood road near highway 13. not only took out the tree but brought down a lot of debris with it leaves and branches. the winds were powerful overnight. >> usually tracy is the bad spot. it's bizarre. came around the corner and saw this. it's crazy. >> reporter: he is with the company that's hired to handle the cleanup here at diablo. the problem is a little bigger than he thought it was going to be so he's waiting for more equipment to get here and sun light before he tackles this. we haven't heard reports of damage or injury from the trees coming down. just a big mess left behind.

reporting live, just outside of alamo in diablo, abc 7 news. >> thank you. happening now, the wind is making for a mess in san francisco. a huge tree blew over blocking three of the four lanes of traffic on the sonic avenue and sell street this morning. a major area. cleanup crews are chopping up the 50-foot long tree. the wind also blew into san francisco from the berrysea fire in napa. smoke and residents on union street called the fire department after smelling the smoke and not knowing if their building was on fire. >> yeah. it's pretty -- it kind of has like a wood fire smell to it. i don't know how else to describe it. >> scaffolding into power lines knocked out power to residents on 20th and deharo. we are checking with pg&e to find out how many are without power. how long are these winds going

to last? mike niccos always has the answers. >> thank you very much. they're going to last for the better part of today and right now they're probably as fast as they're going to get in many neighborhoods. gusting up to 32 napa, 28 santa rosa, concord our closest reporting station, alamo 24 there, 36 fairfield and up to around 20 for most of the bay area until you get to oakland. wind advisories for the north bay mountains and diablo range, keep the north to northeast winds at 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts to 40. there's going to be leaves, twigs, tree branches, pine, pine needles all that will be in the road during the day and especially this morning before it gets all filtered out. red flag warning because of the winds and dry weather. you may have noticed it. sinuses bothering you, north bay mountains and diablo range. the red flag warning until 6:00 tomorrow morning. let's get leyla with a check of

your traffic. >> back into richmond because it sounds like this accident could very well be in the westbound direction but chp reporting it eastbound 80 at patrao avenue at central. could be in the westbound direction because that's where we're seeing most of the traffic as you approach it. a big rig versus another vehicle and the other vehicle is wedged underneaths the big rig. sounds like a serious accident but they're trying to push everything to the shoulder nonetheless. high wind advisories for our bridges this morning so be careful if you do drive anything that's high profile. let's go outside right now and take a look at tbay bridge toll plaza, traffic is clear. a look from our emeryville towards the bay bridge bouncing up and down indicates high winds but traffic running smoothly into the tunnels and towards san francisco. kristen and matt. >> thank you. more now on breaking news we are following in san jose. firefighters are mopping up after an early morning house fire on foot hill court west of foothill park.

officials tell us it appears the fire started in the attic of the two-story home. they say winds were a factor pushing flames throughout the home. the family inside got out safely. abc reporter katie marzullo will join nous a few minutes. the fire is burning in the area of berrysea and knoxville road on the east side of the lake. the fire has burned 376 ikers since it broke out around 8:30 last night. strong winds proving to be a challenge for firefighters there. they have it 75% contained. a few structures were threatened last night but that's not the case anymore this morning. firefighters hope to have the fire fully contained by 6:00 tonight. this morning major league baseball will do all it can to dismiss an anti-trust lawsuit filed by the city of san jose. a hearing will be held today to consider the league's motion to have the lawsuit dismissed. city claims the league is violating anti-trust laws by stalling efforts to relocate the

oakland a's to san jose. under a 1922 supreme court decision, the league has been exempt from anti-trust laws. but attorneys representing san jose argue that exemption applies only to player and labor issues, not to team relocation. a viewing will be held for a san francisco teen killed in a car crash last week. authorities say 16-year-old kevin sand was heading to lincoln high school last friday when 58-year-old jenny juice slammed into his mother's minivan killing him. kevin's city and mother were seriously injured. his mother remains in a coma. authorities say juice was going 80 miles per hour when she hit the van. today's viewing will be from noon to 6:00 at the funeral home in san francisco. kevin's funeral is set for tomorrow. new details this morning on the car chase that shut down the nation's capitol yesterday. it started when a woman tried to drive through the barriers at the white house and ended with officers shooting and killing her near the capitol building.

abc's tamon bradley joins us with the latest. >> reporter: matt, good morning. there was a lot of panic here. the city is still jumpy after the navy yard shooting. this time not a gunman, instead a woman driving a car recklessly. >> reporter: 47 minutes of chaos in washington. a high-speed chase and lockdown at the u.s. capitol. police say 34-year-old miriam carey is responsible for the frightening moments. overnight police descended on her stanford, connecticut, home looking for clues. carey's family members tell abc news she was suffering post-partum depression serious enough to require hospitalization. police also visited her childhood home in brooklyn. >> smile on her face. seemed like there still was a problem. >> reporter: the lockdown in washington started at 2:12 p.m. the driver of a black sedan rams into a barrier outside the white house. police swarm the scene but the driver pulled away. the first shots are firtsds. >> after they arrived i heard the gunshots and car tore out of

the area. >> reporter: a chase up pennsylvania avenue. the driver stops at the base of the u.s. capitol. everyone inside the capitol complex was told to shelter in place. congressmen walking outside told to hide their identities. >> we'll take your pin off. it has -- we wear these pins around. he told me to take the pin off because you could be a target. >> reporter: the driver tries to flee and police fire into the vehicle, killing the woman. inside carey's car, no weapons but something much more alarming, a 1-year-old baby who was unhurt. two officers, one from the capitol police and one from the secret service, were injured in the chase. >> reporter: those brave men and women of the capitol police are not being paid. in fact, they're not going to see their paychecks until after this government shutdown ends. live on capitol hill, tamon bradley, abc 7 news. >> thank you. democrats and republicans in the house -- democrats and

they create a fire danger, how they create a danger themselves with trees down and possibly power lines. they're bringing us this warmer weather. 24-hour temperature change about 4 to 10 degrees warmer today than yesterday. let's break it down. your day planner. we'll be in the 60s right now through 7:00. 68 at the coast, 74 inland, it will start to relax, the breezes will around 4:00 but we'll be 76 at the coast to 82 inland and mild this evening. may not need the coat in many areas. 68 to 74 at 7:00. here's a look at what's going to be the warmest two days of the forecast. saturday and sunday. it will stay at the coast. the warmth through sunday. the cooling starts to hit us monday, 8 degrees cooler and small chance of rain coming into the accuweather seven-day forecast. first leyla. >> i didn't know you hit a deer this week. >> yeah. >> that's sad. >> never good when that happens. be careful out there and so far we have friday light conditions. we did have one accident in richmond. that was along i believe it's

westbound 80 right at central avenue. chp was reporting it on the eastbound side but really i was noticing all the slowing in the westbound direction. but it sounds like everything is pushed to the shoulder as well. you should be in good shape if you need to make it to the hoffman split. we have construction in the east bay along eastbound 580 between greenville, two lanes blocked off that will last until 9:00 this morning. but also, in those construction zones with these high winds, lots of things can move around like dust, so you want to be careful when you pass those coned areas. as we travel along in the westbound direction slow as you approach grant line road. it eases up and you're on top is speeds through livermore. a look in marin county. coming southbound along 101 in central san rafael you're in good shape. >> thanks. >> it's 5:11. a retailer is cutting the price on one of the new iphones. don't you want to hear about

attempted murder of a man outside a night club last month. police say the victim was assaulted on san pablo avenue after leaving the noya restaurant and lounge on september 8th. the victim was badly beaten and remains in the hospital. police have released this surveillance video hoping someone will recognize the two men and the woman in that gray blouse. police are looking for the man in the white t-shirt sitting at the table there and the man in the striped shirt as well. if you know who they are, san pablo police would like to hear from you. adobe system says nearly 3 million customers have had their credit card information exposed to cyber hackers. hackers took customer names, encrypted credit and debit card numbers and other information related to orders from customers worldwide. the company is notifiesing customers and resetting passwords and officials say someone has gained illegal access to the source code of products. >> normally that 15 minutes from now we would be giving you the monthly unemployment report, right. but the government shutdown is

robbing investors of that. >> here's jane king with that and more in this morning's bloomberg business report. >> reporter: no more ad-free instagram, parent company facebook says users will start seeing ads within a couple months. facebook says there won't be many ads and its users will be able to hide the ones they don't like and the new iphone 5c hasn't been on sale a month and already the price is being cut. best buy offering the 16 gigabyte 5c for $50 after a gift card as long as you sign a new two-year contract with your carrier. because of the government shutdown investors will not get the jobs report from the labor department this morning. economists say the u.s. likely created an additional 180,000 jobs last month. and before the shutdown people were feeling pretty secure about their employment situation. a survey says workers' fears of being laid off hit a five-year low last quarter. concern about the government shutdown and a possible u.s. debt default did weigh on stocks yesterday. investors continue to monitor

the situation in washington this morning. at the new york stock exchange, jane king with the bloomberg business report. the search continues this morning for any survivors from the boat that capsized off the coast of italy. officials say at least 114 people are dead, 200 more unaccounted for after the boat caught fire and sank south of sis saly. authorities say the boat was smuggling hundreds of african migrants. 159 people have been rescued. pope francis is calling today a day of tears. a hurricane watch is in effect for parts of the gulf coast after tropical storm karen formed in the southeastern portion of the gulf of mexico. karen is expected to reach hurricane strength by tonight. people in parts of alabama, mississippi, and louisiana are being told to get ready. a state of emergency already has been declared in louisiana and mississippi. officials say fema workers have been furloughed because of the government shutdown and now being called back to work to help protect lives and property. october, a bad month for hurricanes. also for fire season for us. >> it's been quiet in the

hurricane season in the atlantic. it's interesting to see it develop now, and it's going to move right over probably new orleans tonight and then head for atlanta monday. so, you're flying through atlanta monday it could be some issues trying to get through there. for us, fire season. you can feel it outside this morning with the winds, the dry air, the warm conditions and look at that lack of any moisture on live doppler 7 hd. let's talk about the dew points. how sticky it was monday. dew points in the 60s. this was the measure of the moisture in the air. the temperature would have to drop down to this temperature for the air to become 100% saturated. so you can see just how bone dry it is. let's put it in terms we're more used to and show you the relative humidity out there right now. it's in the 20 to 30% range why we're dealing with the high fire danger. outside bouncing around in the 25 to 30 mile per hour gusts. as we look all the way down to

almost the san mateo bridge. it's going to be warm today with dry breezes throughout the better part of the afternoon hours. the highs will continue to stay warm even with the breezes and fire danger relaxing as we head through the weekend. next week the transition to cooler weather, it's looking more likely it could be wet. it's not a great chance but at least it's something to look forward to as far as wet weather. a thermal trough where all the warm air, the winds are moving together and where we find the warmest air. it's backing its way from the central valley to the coast. that's why it's going to be so warm this weekend. let's talk about temperatures today. the coast, upper 60s to low 70s. we'll have mid to upper 70s san francisco and richmond. look at everybody else, everybody else, in the low to mid 80s this afternoon. well above average. if you're heading to the game tonight, our als west division champion oakland a's hosting the tigers. check out these temperatures. 77 at 6:30. only 70, only dropping i should say to 70 by the end of the game

at 9:30. temperatures slightly cooler but still mild, mid 50s to low 60s. the fire danger continues above 1,000 feet until 6:00 tomorrow morning. let's take a look at that accuweather seven-day forecast. saturday and sunday the warmest days with 70s along the coast. the rest of us in the 80s. you can see the drop in the temperatures back to average monday. and then tuesday, that may be the slight chance of rain, wednesday and thursday temperatures a little bit below average but it will be dry by then. have a great weekend. >> all right. so far so good. we are looking at fairly calm conditions except for the winds across the bay area. that is the big news. we have several chp high wind advisories for our bridges, richmond, san rafael the bay bridge and dumbarton. traffic is running smoothly on all of our roadways. we had an earlier accident confirmed by chp, eastbound side of 80 at central avenue. looks like everything is to the shoulder so it is not blocking lanes. as we take you into san

we have several chp high wind advisories for our area. the bay bridge, traffic moving smoothly out of emeryville to san francisco. details on the rest of the bay area coming up. >> thanks. a select committee from the state assembly will be holding the third in a series of meetings to figure out how to protect airports, shipping ports and other infrastructure from rising sea levels. the san francisco examiner reports sfo has been conducting a two-year shoreline protection study. officials asked the army corps of engineers for helping in determining how best to protect the airport and federal funds might be available for upgrades. the committee hearing will be held in long beach october 25th. >> what would you do with $4 trillion? that's the question several bank customers were asking themselves in mississippi. imagine finding all that money in your bank account. for a short time this week that was the reality for several customers at bank corp south. one man had $4 trillion in his account. a woman had $40 trillion.

result of a night of very windy weather across the bay area. and it continues. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield starts off our team coverage in diablo. >> we had a tree down right here in the middle of this road and the last 30 minutes they've brought a chainsaw out here and managed to break it up into some pieces and move it out of the way. you can see it's still a mess out here. lots of debris that comes down along with these trees. and to show you a better example of that, look at this video we took overnight in oakland where a tree came down and also a lot of leaves and branches along with it. this happened at skyline and redwood road near highway 13 and when this tree came down, it even started a small fire that didn't do a lot of damage and was put out quickly. but when it comes down, it brings trouble with it. the winds were very powerful overnight, just causing all kinds of problems around the bay area. >> even coming in off diablo road a few trees down we had to move before we got out here. we have crews coming out, a lot

worse than we anticipated. last couple hours it's really picked up there. you know, as we were standing here, keep hearing the popping and branches keep falling. >> he is with the company that was hired to handle the cleanup here in diablo. this is a private road that leads up to the diablo country club and some residents as well. and if you look at this live picture a car just made it through, this is the first car we've seen able to pass through here. things are looking up in this area. they're getting it cleaned up and cleared out. we haven't heard of any damage or injuries because of these trees coming down overnight. just a lot of cleanup ahead. reporting live in diablo, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thanks. s gusty winds blamed for knocking two stories of scaffolding into a set of power lines last night. scaffolding set up against a building under renovation at 20th streets here in san francisco. pg&e crews were called out to fix the damage to the lines.

>> more problems caused by the windy weather. check out video of this tree that crashed into a red pick-up truck in napa. it happened in the area of solano avenue. branches shattered the windshield and went into the truck. no word on any injuries. >> it's 5:32 right now. we want to talk more about the winds and when they'll begin to die down for us. >> check in with meteorologist mike nicco. he has the answers. mike? >> we're tracking the winds, live doppler 7, these are the wind speeds but not gusts. that's where we start to see the damage. these are the sustained speeds around 20 in napa, 12 in novato, everybody else around 10 or below. we could have gusts through 3:00 this afternoon, up to 50 miles per hour in the east/northeast sustained around 20 to 35 miles per hour. that's also heightening the fire danger above 1,000 feet. we still have the red flag warning. leyla? >> we do have downed trees like amy hollyfield was saying from oakland all the way into calla

stowga. breezy conditions initiating high wind advisories. for all of our bridges across the bay area. as we take you into the east bay traveling along highway 4 this ride is starting to build a bit coming out of antioch, your heaviest traffic around railroad avenue as you push a little farther to the west you're still going to be on the brakes there but moving just a little bit better into san jose, wide open on all of our freeways, 101, 280, 85, quick live look outside and a look at the golden gate bridge. pretty empty out there and moving smoothly. >> all right. thank you, leyla. more on breaking news we're following in the south bay. firefighters are blaming high winds for helping to fuel a house fire in san jose. abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo is live on the scene at foothill court. . >> reporter: matt, the firefighters are still here on the scene. see we just watched them wrap up some hoses here. as we pan over the house you can

see the damage that was done. most to the second story of this fam iily home on foothill court. two of six people evacuated without injuries and must be stable enough because the woman who lives here has gone back inside. let's roll video and show you how bad these flames were this morning. fire broke out just before 3:00 this morning inside the house. there were the two adults, two senior citizens and two children as well, but as i said they all were able it to get out okay. we don't know yet, it's too early to know what caused this fire but what firefighters do know is that the heavy winds down here didn't help. >> the wind was definitely a factor. we did have some gusty winds, kind of coming and going. initially when we got here what was driving the fire really once the fire broke through to the roof, it started driving the fire back into the attic and pushing the fire inside. . >> reporter: those flames up through the roof and that's how the wind also was able to get ahold of them and this fire

actually flared back up about an hour, little less than an hour after it started. double duty for firefighters this morning and doubly scary for the homeowners. luckily they're okay. live in san jose, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. a wildfire burning near lake berrysea in napa county is 75% contained this morning. the fire which broke out last night around 8:30 is scorching the area around berrysea, knoxville road. 500 acres has burned so far. the fire is 75% contained and the cause still being investigated. contra costa firefighters are near a scene of a brush fire in martinez. it started around 1:00 this morning in a wild land area on solano way north of highway 4. smoke and flames could be seen in a wide area. no word on what caused the fire, how much brush was burned and the extent of any damage. flying embers from a fire at a recycling plant are blamed for

sparking 18 other fires along i-5. fire broke out yesterday at 3:00 in stockton. part of interstate 5 was closed for a short while. officials say it started with burning paper outside the plant and spread. firefighters say they couldn't get to it fast enough. >> in this case the fire started at the front and absolutely prohibited our units to get into the fire scene. >> the fire spread to several propane tanks that exploded. no injuries were reported. authorities are investigating whether postpartum depression drove a connecticut mother to try to drive past barriers at the white house and u.s. capitol. authorities identify the woman shot and killed by police after leading them on a high-speed chase as 34-year-old miriam carey. the fbi searched her home last night. relatives say she suffered from serious postpartum depression after giving birth to daughter last year. investigators say carey tried to back into officers who tried to stop her. the chaos put the capitol on

sales. ravel william ulbricht was arrested tuesday in a san francisco library. federal prosecutors filed charges in new york alleges ulbricht is the mastermind who operated silk road, a digital marketplace that for three years allowed users to trade illegal goods and services in near total secrecy. ulbricht is charged in maryland with using the website to try to hire someone to kill a witness. a santa clara high school teacher accused of having sex with an underage student is expected to enter a plea when he returns to court this morning. police arrested 32-year-old cortez gusmond days ago. someone tipped off school officials about inappropriate contact with a 17-year-old female. who attended santa clara high. the district contacted police who took him into custody. school officials placed gusmond on administrative leave. investigators think she's the only victim. b.a.r.t and union negotiators will be back in the bargaining table this morning with six days left before the end of their cooling off period.

surrounding the black range rover. the driver alexian lien took off but ran over one. motorcyclists pull lien from his car and beat him in front of his wife and daughter. one of the bikers said he and the group were ready to walk away. >> look at the end of the video he walked away. what you don't see at the end is the guy mouthing off. which is more aggressive behavior. if you're worried for your family don't be aggressive. >> lien's wife expressed sympathy to one biker who was seriously injured but said her husband was faced with a life-threatening situation. police say the wife called 911 four times in eight minutes asking for help. a study may convince woman to exercise. a large new american cancer society study has found physical activity reduces the risk of breast cancer in post-menopausal women. researchers say moderate exercise such as walking for an hour a day cuts the risk by 14%. vigorous activity can reduce your risk by 25%.
