smoke that could be seen and smelled for miles around. the haze is all over the bay area that everyone is talking about. good evening. i'm carolyn johnson. >> i'm dan ashley. high winds and self-bay area fires are creating the haze that you might be seeing where you live. tonight crews are still on the scene of this fire. abc7 news reporter alan wang is live along highway 12 in solano county with the very latest. alan, it is amazing how widespread this smoke is. >> it is starting to die down a little compared to the winds and they are fanning the flames that blew smoke all the way into the bay area. it was a combination of a rare wind and marsh land vegetation. by night fall fire crews were moping up hotspots and a herd of cattle were looking for greener pastures. it started around noon today. this massive grassfire east of sasoon city burned.

several cows were trapped, but a ranch hand helped free them. it burned its way into the nearby marsh land and seemed to generate more smoke than flames. flames. >> fighting fires out here in the marsh and there is tbreen vegetation -- green vegetation and it smoked more than typical. >> the smoke snarled traffic along interstate 80 and the northerly winds blew it into the bay area creating a haze across the sky. meanwhile more than a dozen homes out here were evacuated. >> i am waiting for my thetrying to get the bird and the dogs. >> the only loss was a ranch building that contained hay and farm equipment. the fire is under control, but crews are paying attention to the wind and several teetering power poles damaged by the flames. in solano county, alan wang, abc7 news. >> look at this fire in sonoma county, it came close to one home and it broke out just

before 1:00 this afternoon. firefighters stopped the flames after that fire and charred about 130 acres of dry brush. sky 7hd shows a fire that broke out in vaw knee shaw along 780. they threaten ited buildings around 3:00, but no evacuations were ordered. >> you can smell smoke in about every part of the bay area. chances are you can outside your home. people tweeted us all day and reached us on facebook saying they smelled smoke and saw hayes across the bay area and even in places miles away from the nearest fire. haze almost made alcatraz vanish. some folks felt disappointed trying to enjoy the view from the hills above berkeley. >> it is a bummer when you don't get to see the beautiful blue sky. it is a little sad to know it is from something that is so far away and affecting us here. >> i woke up to it actually. i thought something was burning in my house or something like that.

>> and you can see plenty of smoke in the air in this panorama that was taken at sunset. it is really just hanging in the air. it is not just the haze, but red flag warnings are in affect. the high fire danger. let's check in with sandhya patel and live doppler 7hd. >> we are seeing clear skies as you will see right now and the clear skies combining with the breezy conditions. dry air is keeping the fire danger up. the smoke that traveled from the fairfield area fire and the solano county brought heavy smoke into the bay area. as we look sutro tower camera, it is hard to see san francisco this afternoon when all of that smoke was over here. we did have reduced visibility, but the smoke started to clear as you can see there, and thousand we are basically looking at those smoke levels that hit their peak at 4:00 p.m. there was 70 micrograms per cubic meter and dropped off sharply at 5:00 p.m.

san bruno could happen here. however pg&e insists that the pipeline is safe otherwise it wouldn't be in operation. >> pg&e doesn't know enough about the condition of the pipeline. >> san carlos city manager is worried about pg&e's pipeline and it runs between 280 and 101, primarily along britain avenue. >> their records are mismatched in terms of the material of the pipeline and the age of the pipeline and whether or not refurbished pieces from the 19twenty -- 1920s were used in the creation of the pipeline. >> it is similar to the one in san bruno that ruptured and exploded killing eight people. in an e-mail, the employee raises concerns of the pipeline and asking are we siting on a san bruno situation? a pg&e spokesperson says the line is safe. the utility tested the line two years ago, but the city isn'tit is in convinced. it is in the process of serving pg&e with a temporary

injunction. they are required to shut off service to pipeline 147. pg&e voluntarily reduced the pressure by 20% and says it will consider further reductions if it can be done without jeprodizing service to customers. both pg&e and san carlos want to assure residents there is no need to panic over pipeline 147. >> there is no change in the line from yesterday to today. there is no reason to panic to think about leaving their homes or make any changes to their lives on a daily basis. >> the california public utility commission will meet with the city on monday to see if there is anything it can do to help get the issue sorted out. abc7 news. sky 7hd shows us where a costco was forced to evacuate. an above line broke just after 6:00. it took crews an hour to patch the leak. shoppers returned to the costco when firefighters gave the all clear. and new at 11:00, san jose fire crews fire crews are moping up a blaze that included a pair of mobile

homes. both mobile homes were empty at the time. the fire captain said the fire apparently started in one of them and then spread to the other. new details tonight. oakland police made an arrest in connection with a fender bender murder. abc7 news reporter sergio has more on today's arrest. >> the arrest of douglas is the latest chapter in the murder case of charles butler, junior. just days before christmas in 2011 police say butler was killed after accidentally bumping a car while trying to parallel park in an oakland corner store. douglas was arrested by us marshals on tuesday and investigators say he is an accomplice. the accused gunman is still on the loose. police are looking for more information to help track him down. >> we knew there was a lot of people out that day. there was a fundraiser.

>> butler's sister described the scene when he was shot in 2011. >> six bullets. they weren't happy with that. drove up and put the last bullet in his head over nothing. >> as an organ donor he helped save several recipients that holiday season. >> the fact that he gave his organs to someone else is the most wonderful christmas gift ever. my brother was giving life to other people. >> police say they got new tips on this case after a recent plea by butler's ailing father. >> we had a news released a month back, a month and a halfback where the father who was dying requested that before he leaves this earth that someone please help him find the killers. >> his family tells me they are happy about are hap douglas' arrest. they are hoping hunter will soon be in custody. abc7 news. a 12-year-old boy is now in a coma after being hit by a

car on a freeway in oakland. witnesses say the boy with autism in his pajamas was walking from lane to lane on 580 early this morning. chp investigators are trying to figure out how he ended up on the highway. they found the boy's mother. the driver of the car that hit him will not be charged. two dogs that strayed into a rural brentwood property were shot to death, not killed by a shovel as first reported. he originally said he beat them to death with a shovel and then cremated them. but investigators say he was covering for his father who shot the dogs last saturday after they began killing his chickens. state law allows an owner to kill a dog attacking livestock. >> now to the threat of a bart strike. a big gap separates both sides in bart's labor talks. but how big depends on who you ask. bart says there is an $89 million gap. one union says it has released $30 million. that's because both sides disagree on how long the new labor contract should last. bart wants a four-year deal and the unions want a
