featured seven lead changes. what ultimately made the difference? >> obviously, our defense at the end really rose to the occasion. we've been in these situations before and not got a stop. we had turnovers. our defense forced turnovers. we recovered in our kicking game. our kicker did a nice job after a terrible week last week. >> quint: why were you able to force second half five turnovers? >> well, i think we disguised our coverages. i think we were getting a little pressure there at the end. but for the most part, looked like we had good anticipation on the defense and in the right position. >> quint: this is a critical game in conference. what does it mean now to stay in the hunt for the league race? >> well, you know, when you have these gameses where they're close like this, you have to find a way to win if you're going to be there in the end. kansas state played a great game. two really good teams. a lot of fun to watch. not good for the coaches. a lot of fun for the fans. >> quint: congratulations, coach. bob? >> mike gundy could not have summed it up better. a lot of fun for the fans and announcers. that was a blast of a football game to call.

now on abc news. investigators think they have pinpointrd what caused a crash request a driver going the wrong way. and one man makes a decision today about whether undocumented immigrants can get their law license in california. abc 7 news starts now. >> live from the kgo broadcast center this is abc news. >> it was a little alarming, no one really had any idea what was going on. >> monuments of confusion and uncertainty. tonight we're learning more about the driver in an accident. we have new details today in that deadly drunk driving accident. one man was killed and two others injured after a crash on the 101 early this morning. the chp said a drunk wrong way driver hit a taxi cab head on.

cornell is live in san francisco with the details. >> reporter: we just learned the pastor in that vehicle was a 62-year-old. the cab he was riding it was struck by a college student driving the wrong way on the 101. twisted metal is all that's left. the cab was hit head on by a wrong-way driver on southbound 101 in san francisco. >> as far as we know the two passengers in the taxi cab were not belted in. one was completely ejected from the vehicle. there was another passenger that was severely injured. >> the chp says the 24-year-old stanford student, zackary katz

was drunk when driving his infiniti wrong on the 101. these pictures were taken of the scene after being in the back up for several hours. >> they just said keep back, and it's going to be a couple hours, just get back to your cars and wait it out. >> the taxi is owned by national and veterans cab of san francisco. the president says he is devastated by the tragedy. >> it's crazy. i mean it could have been us, right? we were in the back of a taxi cab. it just reinforces our -- our decision to not drive home since we had drinks and take the safe way home in a cab. >> we learned the passenger and the driver of the cab remain in critical condition tonight.

the driver of the wrong way car has been charged with dui. he remains hospitalized. we know he is from new york state attending stanford. live from san francisco. >> cornell, thank you. the search is on for a gunman today in oakland after a deadly shooting in a busy intersection. a woman died, two other victims are recovering in the hospital. police were near by and heard the gunfire at 14th and broadway around 1:30 this morning. they also saw a crowd of people running for safety when the shots were fired. earlier tonight a man was killed and a second injured. police got the call just before 8:30 and aryed to find the man's body outside of the car. the second victim was taken to the hospital with one gunshot wound. police are hoping witnesses will come forward. the partial shut down of the

federal government entered it's fifth day today and both sides are still at odds over any resolution. in a sad session of the house of representatives another bill was passed, this one with unanimous consent. all of those in favor say aye. >> a rare unanimous agreement on a federal budget issue. by a vote of 407 to one, the house approved giving furlough government workers retro active pay when the government reopens. when representatives from both sides of the aisle. >> our position on obama care is very simple. it is no special treatment under the law. it is under the individual mandate. we are funding this government. >> the idea that they would defund, overturn, or delay the affordable care act -- that's not going to happen.

as i said to my colleagues, that's like saying give me your first born child. >> secretary hagel says he is bringing back as many civilian employees as possible. he says he will use the pay hour military act that was approved before the shut june down to return workers that contribute to the morale, well-being of the military. they also claim they heard from several republicans who want the same. >> the letter that the leader referred to with 200 democrats on indicates that clearly right now there are enough people to pass a government opening funding bill. >> but republicans still blame democrats say they are not taking out the house funding bill. the proposal to provide back pay is expected to pass the senate, but there is no time table on when senator wills -- senators

immigration rallies took place nationwide and part of the dignity and respect. they signed a number of bills today to provide additional protection for immigrants in california. they said while washington waffles, i'm not waiting. among the new laws is one prompted by the case of a man who was illegally brought to the country by his parents. he has passed the bar and is seeking to get his law license. the supreme court said federal law may prohibit immigrants illegally on the country from obtaining the law license. the legislature could act to address such cases. we have just days away from another potential bart strike. contract and union leaders met today but they remain far apart

on many issues. they say the negotiations are painfully slow. >> we had discussions on topics for the part-time employees. and we're inching along to try to get an agreement on that. basically it was junction supplement topics. >> when you look at the overall picture, wages, health care contribution, and pension contributions, the union is asking for $89 million more than bart is able to afford right now. >> at least one union says the gap is really $30 million, the difference is based on the length of the new labor contracts. bart officials want a four-year contract, unions want three years. if no agreement is made, a bart strike could again friday morning. breaking news, there is a fast moving grass fire. at one point a lumberyard was threatened.

towards el diablo. we have clear and cool conditions overnight tonight and a warm day for your sunday. we'll notice a few high clouds snaeblging in here and a cooler week ahead as we go into tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. the radar satellite composite keeping high pressure. the high bringing us those slight off shore winds. expect warm to middle temperatures for your sunday as a matter of fact as we take a look at some of the high clouds moving in starting at 11:00 tonight throughout the overnight hours. still clear, but you'll notice as we go into the lunchtime hour, that's when some of the high clouds are start to drift north. it is on the hassy side for your sunday, but that will not hold temperatures back at all. the temperatures tonight will be

moving slowly toward the gulf coast. it stalled earlier in the day, and forecasters are downgrading it to a tropical depression. part of the ooze coast is still under a warning. these residents in mississippi are not taking any chances. they have filled 4,000 sandbags since thursdays as their first line of defense. we're going to make sure that the sandbags will help protect our stuff as much as possible. >> of course know that you're going to have some wind. >> even with a downgrade, heavy rain and winds, 40 miles per hour winds are expected. karen is expected to come ashore late tonight or tomorrow morning. >> people in parts of nebraska are cleaning up and bracing for more warm weather tonight. storm chasers captured some of them on video in nebraska yesterday. the national weather service

received reported of 16 homes damages. in the town of wayne, four officials were destroyed. forecasters say kansas, nebraska, and ohio remand at high risk for thunderstorms, tornado, and hail. people in casper, wyoming. look at this they're digs out from a foot of snow. it fell too much for the trees, over 100 fell from the weight of the snow. severe weather sen thousands of nascar fans. the race is just 65 laps in when all of this happened. frequent lightning and heavy rain forced officials to call the race early and declare frank kimle the womener. >> smoke and ash sent across much of the bay area today and the fire is contained. you see all of that smoke.

winds pitched so much that air call officials issued an advisory for people as far as san francisco and the peninsula. crews say the fire was fully contained overnight. around 1,000 acres burns and flames destroyed a barn. they say it started on highway 12 near the city of fairfield. firefighters in southern california are battling a grass fire. it is near the transition of i-5 and state route 14. 15 acres have been burned. ground and air crews have been taking on the flames. all lanes are now open. police arrested a 16-year-old in connection with a stabbing earlier this year in campbell. they are being charged as an adult with attempted murder with

gang enhancements. police say he and a 21-year-old man are suspects. the sisters of woman who was shot and killed by capital police just days ago are speaking out to abc news. they're giving us a clearer picture of a mother with a history of mental illness. her sisters article she didn't deserve to die. gio benitiz spoke with the women. >> was she a vie rent person? >> no, she wasn't. >> police say they were forced to shoot and will the 34-year-old thursday in the nation's capital even though she had no weapon in the car, they say her black infinity was weapon enough after ramming into white house barricades. her 1-year-old daughter erica in the car with her. >> she didn't have any -- she

didn't hate her country or anything like that, she wasn't a country. she was diagnosed with post partum depression with psychosis and was on medication. >> the sisters are speaking from unique backgrounds. amy is a registered nurse and valerie is a retired nypd sergeant. >> officers had enough time to assess the occupants of the vehicle, and they took somebody's life. >> one in ten william will experience the post partum depression. >> mental illness really should have more attention. >> sources say that last year the father of kari's daughter called police, reportedly out of concern over her claims that president obama placed her house under electronic surveillance. something her sisters say they never heard her talk about.

they want to shine a light on her illness. >> if there was something you could say to her right now, what would you say? >> we wish you were here. >> attempts to reach police in washington for comment today were unsuccessful. officials previously said that irks leading to the shooting remand under investigation. we have new video from an attack in a shopping mall today in kenya. it shows four attackers. they're walking into a shopping complex with machine guns. they took place in a four-day siege that claimed the lives of at least 67 people last month. the just released video shows there could have been far fewer involved. it was perfect weather in florida for a yard sale yesterday. a sale motivated by just cleaning out the garage.

>> covering all of the bay area, this is abc 7 news. >> several cars caught fire this morning when a truck was reportedly driving southbound on 101. authorities are still investigating what caused the truck to veer off into the carmax lot. it is possible that high winds in the area were a factor. >> two more motorcyclists are being charged for the beating of a man last sunday. the attack was caught on video. it shows the 33-year-old banker

and his terrified family being chased by a pack of bikers. a minor accident lead to him crushing a biker trying to escape. it ended when two good samaritans stepped in. >> i had to step in because no one was doing anything. they were going to kill this family and it doesn't sound good to me. >> new york place are investigating reports that as many as five off duty officers were in the bikers that day. president obama is leaning towards a name change for the washington redskins. he says he is sure they don't mean any offense, but he would

temperatures will dip into the low 40s. there is a few high clouds and get ready for cooler temperatures as we go into the first and middle part of next week. keeping the storm track well to the north of us and creating those down slooping off shore winds. it will be another day before they shift to on shore. that will happen as we go into monday and tuesday. get out and enjoy it. we will start to see a few high clouds sneak in here. this is tonight at 11:00. as we head into sunday morning, still clear at 5:00 to 7:00. it will really be late in the afternoon when some of the high clouds start to rotate in. this is a good sign the winds will start to shift a bit and it will center just off of the coast and it will find it's way moving right back up near the
