the government shutdown is impacting american families. >> we learned 17 families of service members killed since the shutdown began have not received the customary $100,000 benefit they need to attend funeral costs. families use the money to fly to dover and to greet those fallen heroes. >> the hard-working fishermen on the west coast are feeling the effects. the government is no longer issuing permits to harvest lucrative king crabs. 100 boats is sitting at the docks with a full crew waiting out the impact. we also learned members of congress can still workout in style. an exclusive house gym was supposed to be shutdown along with the government. >> but that gym, known as the members' wellness center remains fully open, with flat-screen tvs, workout machines and a heated swimming pool, for

lawmakers' use and enjoyment. with the shutdown in its ninth day, is washington any closer to an agreement? >> we're going to get the latest right now from abc's tahman bradley in washington. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning, john and diana. president obama as opened the door to supporting a short-term funding bill, while he negotiates something long-term with republicans. but it doesn't appear republicans are ready to go along with that. despite a ten-minute phone call, president obama and house speaker john boehner remain miles apart on the shutdown. the president again said no negotiations before the debt ceiling is increased and the government is reopened. >> let's stop the excuses. let's take a vote in the house. let's end this shutdown right now. >> if there's unconditional surrender by republicans, he'll sit down and talk to us. that's not the way our government works. >> reporter: the two men are locked into their positions, as the country edges closer to what economists call an economic catastrophe. in just eight days, the u.s. will run out of money to pay its bills unless congress raises the so-called debt ceiling. the markets are already shocked. the dow down 900 points over the past 3 weeks. and there's fear interest rates on new mortgages and car loans

will skyrocket. >> warren buffett likened the fall to a nuclear bomb. a weapon too horrible to use. >> reporter: among those being hurt by the government shutdown, america's heroes and their families. the v.a. has furloughed thousands of workers. and military death benefits have been put on hold. the government sends military families a $100,000 check when a loved one dies. but since the start of the shutdown, no payments have been made. >> i'd say to those families, your government let you down at a time of your need. there's no excuse for this. >> reporter: thankfully, a private foundation has stepped forward to provide those families with a grant until the government funding resumes. >> abc's tahman bradley, live in washington for us. thank you. the centers for disease control recalling some of its scientists furloughed in the government shutdown, trying to deal with a sweeping salmonella outbreak. nearly 300 people in 18 states have been sickened. half of the people needing hospitalization. the likely culprit, some raw

chicken packaged at foster farms facilities in california's central valley. >> one of the things that really concerns cdc is that this outbreak has seven different types of salmonella causing disease. and some of those are very resistant to antibiotics. your symptoms would develop within three days of eating the chicken. if you have severe stomach flu symptoms, this is one you don't ignore. you have to get checked out. >> the usda has not issued a recall. but it has marked problem packages with codes reading -- p6137. p6137a. and p7632. you can find these codes at abcnews.com. we're monitoring a developing story out of northwestern oklahoma. a natural gas pipeline explosion. it happened in the town of rosston. the flames could be seen as far as 50 miles away into kansas. no one has been hurt. officials tell us the fire is contained. and they're going to let it burn itself out. the cause of this explosion, under investigation.

an undercover new york city police department detective will be in court today to face charges stemming from his involvement in that road rage incident. arrested last night. his attorney said that he only witnessed other bikers attacking that suv. but evidence shows him allegedly punching and kicking that side of that vehicle before leaving the scene. three soldiers in washington state are facing charges in the stabbing death of a fellow soldier. police say kevin gieke was stabbed through the heart after a confrontation at a military base outside tacoma. one soldier is charged with first-degree murder. the other two, are accused of trying to dispose of the weapon. and starting today, some classes at malibu high school will be relocated, while investigators look at health hazards. parents are concerned after learning that three teachers working in the same area of the campus were diagnosed with thyroid cancer. while others have experienced migraines and skin diseases. testing is under way for possible contamination for mold and termite treatment. and kerry kennedy has made

another court appearance in suburban new york, as a judge set jury selection for her drugged driving trial in january. the daughter of the late senator, robert f. kennedy, made no comments. kennedy was arrested last year after swerving her car into a tractor-trailer. blood tests found ambien, which she said she took accidentally instead of her thyroid medication. parents of schoolchildren in boston hope there won't be a repeat of yesterday's surprise school bus driver strike. the walkoff sent parents scrambling to get kids to and from school. an estimated 6,200 kids stayed home from school. the bus drivers are rebelling against the installation of gps monitoring devices. a speedup of route times and shortening of paychecks. back here to new york. endurance swimmer diana nyad is in the middle of another marathon swim. >> it's not quite as long as her 110-mile trek from cuba to florida last month. but it's safer and long. the 64-year-old nyad kicked off a 48-hour swim

last month. that's a drop of 6%, for a total of 900 points. the dow opens today's trading at 14,776. and history is being made at the white house when president obama nominates janet yellin as the next fed chair. she would become the first woman to hold the high-level job. yellen has been vice chair of the federal reserve since 2010. ben bernanke's term ends in january. one of the fed's big jobs is to distribute those brand-new $100 bills. they cost 12.5 cents to produce. that's a 60% increase over the older version of the c-note. the fed actually rejected more than 1 billion notes because of printing errors. and it could cost $50 million or more to destroy those bad bills. >> dumper diving back at the fed. what do you say? >> good idea. apple fans have october 22nd marked on their calendar. that's when the company is expected to make its new ipad announcement.

downpours in north carolina, virginia, delaware and parts of new jersey. >> if you're flying, airport delays possible in charlotte, north carolina, phoenix, and arizona. one person expected to be flying today is the 9-year-old boy who snuck on to a plane in minneapolis and flew to las vegas last week. >> it's reportedly being flown home in protective custody. a spokesman for his family says his parents are struggling with their troubled youngster. the boy's father says at one point his behavior became so bad that he had to seek help from police. >> one particular officer said i need to discipline my son more harder. and i asked him, if i discipline my son harder, y'all will come and try to lock me up. >> the boy allegedly took a delivery truck for a joyride a few days before hopping on that plane to vegas. that ended when he crashed into a police cruiser, causing thousands of dollars of damage that the vehicle. a search for a missing san francisco hospital patient may have come to a tragic end. the body of a woman has been found in a hospital stairwell

used as a fire escape. 57-year-old lynn spaulding disappeared from her room two weeks ago. a city-wide search turned up empty. a spokesman says spaulding's friends and family are devastated to learn that she may have never even left the hospital. federal investigators are warning people to stop using a dietary supplement for weight loss and muscle building, now, blamed for hepatitis and liver failure outbreak in hawaii. health officials say 24 of the 29 patients reported using oxy elite pro. 1 person has died and among 11 people hospitalized, 2 of them needed liver transplants. oxy elite pro was sold nationwide. and now, the feds want it off the market. the future of a dallas area teacher came to light that she modeled in "playboy." 21-year-old christy nicole deweese appearing in pictures when she was 18. february 2011 is now a spanish teacher. probably needless to say, the situation that is getting a lot of attention. >> i just hear everybody talking

the battalion chief says the fire started shortly after midnight in the upper unit of the four-plex. residents say a neighbor woke everybody up by knocking on doors saying his apartment was on fire. they think it was started by a dura flame log that rolled out of his fireplace into his living room. everyone got out okay. three people are staying out of their homes because of the damage. friends and family asking tough questions this morning after a san francisco woman disappeared from her hospital room. a body has been found in the same hospital more than two weeks later. live in the newsroom. >> a reliable source tells abc 7 news the body is that of 57-year-old lynne spalding, but the hospital police, even a family spokesperson won't confirm it just yet. a medical examiner called lynne's daughter, told her the body had been found but there was no positive id yet. she checked into san francisco general with an infection. shechs put on medication that made her disoriented. she vanished two days
