bart talks wrapped up just minutes ago and while trains are rolling there is no deal yet and the let of a strike is still hanging over the heads of bay area commuters. >> i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm carolyn johnson. sergio is live in oakland with developments that unfolded late tonight. sergio? >> a lot of activity in the last hour. we started hearing that bart management was going to offer a new proposal to the unions to consider. and about 45 minutes ago both sides left the building and would not say the proposal was given. the mediator in these negotiations have asked both sides to stay silent.

they are expected to be here at 9:30 in the morning. they are expecting an offer from management. >> we do expect a proposal from the district. it can be forthcoming actually as we speak. so bargaining is still active and happening. they have proven to be the biggest news of the day. it is one of the few things both sides agree on. >> i think it has been good for the unions because they get to address her directly. they have to explain to her their feelings and concerns and explain their proposals. >> the fact that she does rec cog noise she could be here is -- does recognize she could be there is good. >> what has made the attendance more significant is she has spent the day talking with the unions, but she hasn't offered any deals. >> basically she is in a lining mode. >> the other -- in a listening mode.

>> there is a sizable contingent of officials. that's a welcome addition for unions, but not much for the bart negotiator. >> hearing all of this and i just personally don't view it and in other states where i see the same thing i say it has never turned out to be positive. >> bart trains are running through the weekend as the negotiations continue, but they have given notice that if a deal is not hammered out they will hit the picket line common day morning. today was basically a 12-hour informational session with the bart general manager and the unions. the talks resume tomorrow morning at 9:30. reporting live in oakland, abc7 news. >> thanks very much. many riders went to bed anticipating a strike. the ridership was way down compared to recent fridays. fewer passengers took bart and

>> post your video to twitter or instagram with the hash tag dear bart and you can share on our abc7 facebook page. >> a costco store is recalling 40,000 pounds of row ties re chicken that may be contaminated with salmonella. there are the signature foster farms chickens and the row ties rechicken soup and chicken leg quarters and the salad are subject to the recall. they were sold to customers at the costco store on el camino real between september 11th and september 23rd. the salmonella sout break -- outbreak is still growing. there are now 317 cases in 20 states as well as puerto rico. the reported cases are here in california. it is not just foster farms you need to look out for. other brands are processed in the same plants. the consumer report says to double check these brands as well including ralph's safe

way and vons. we have a full list on our website, abc7news.com. you will find it under see it on tv. there are new security measures in place at san francisco general hospital after a missing patient was found dead in a stirwell two weeks later. she disappeared on september 21st from her room. she was found in a rarely used stirwell this tuesday, 17 days after she disappeared. in response, hospital security will now check all stirwells every day and must check the fire escapes when a door alarm sounds. restaurants in berkeley thought it was part of doing business. tip jars were being stolen. they went under the radar and it helped police connect the dots. here is a look at the suspect. abc7 news reporter alan wang is live with this story. alan? >> carolyn, police are still looking for him tonight. he has been walking around in

plain sight. for the longest time police didn't realize he was stealing tip jars because the businesses weren't reporting it. now they have video and they want the public to look at it and see if they recognize them. days ago. the whole tip jar was taken. >> he has been stealing tip jars from all over north berkeley and the heart of the famed gourmet ghetto. >> we are out here every day trying to make what we can. you know the bus fare and the living expenses and for this guy to come in. >> he has been coming in and robbion -- robbing stores for several months. nobody realized how prolific he was until he was caught on video. and then she started asking around. >> somebody else was robbed of their tip jar. why wouldn't you say anything? we need to communicate with one another as business owners. >> a bigger picture emerged. they said they were robbed

too. >> one of the few restaurants on euclid avenue that hasn't been hit is this restaurant. probably because their tip jar is chained down. >> the chief board pizza shop thinks they have an accomplice says they tried to take it during a gig. he tried to grab it and i said i can't do that. >> and this clerk says he stole her wallet from behind the counter. >> i looked away for a split second and he just took it. >> they may have stolen laptops from customers and backpacks from employees. now more businesses are communicating and watching out for the tip jar thief. in berkeley, alan wang, abc7 news. several of the country's most visited landmarks will re-open despite the government shutdown. south dakota, new york and arizona have agreed with the national park service to reopen mount mount rushmore, the statue of liberty and the grand canyon.

each state will pay the park's daily operating costs. california has decided against using state money to reopen the parks like yosemite. >> negotiations on the budget and debt ceiling are expected to continue through the weekend fnlt in six days the u.s. will not be able to pay its bills and could default in the debt ceiling is not raised. john boehner offered a plan to raise the debt limit through late november to give more time to negotiate a broader budget deal. the president turned it down. senate republicans presented a more long-term plan. the president didn't agree to it, but the republicans are encouraged by the increase in talks. >> the president listened carefully. he says some of the elements were issues he could work on. it was a good exchange and inconclusive exchange. >> house republicans are expected to reconvene early tomorrow to discuss their next proposal. >> tonight there are problems with the golden gate bridge's automated following system. here is a live look at the

golden gate bridge. since the toll takers were removed in march drivers have had to use fast track or they would get a bill in the mail. many people were mailing in payments and the workers could not keep up. hundreds were charged late fees for payments that were never processed. drivers could also pay by phone, but the wait times have been long. the website has crashed a number of times. the metropolitan transportation commission says more people have been hired now to deal with the demand. next on abc7 news, the governor signs a new law requiring more exits in limos following the deadly fire on the bridge. why that vehicle will make the vehicles more dangerous. >> and your comments turned into commercials. how google plans to use your information to make some money. >> and millions of stamps are stuck in printers. why they think it is posting the message. >> and temperatures are falling. the chill is in the air. i'll show you how cold it is in the morning in the wake up

affect for newly built limos. for those already built they must be in compliance by january of 2016. >> when alcohol is involved, people may try to climb out of hatches and pop out windows. >> we have had several situations where people climb out of one sunroof and then they walk on the roof where the vehicle is doing the 70 or 80 miles an hour and they are walking on the other sunroof. we had situations where people fell off and the vehicle is sitting still. >> companies must comply with the new law, a law that requires safety briefings for passengers. abc7 news. governor brown has vetoed legislation that would have imposed the toughest restrictions on gun ownership. it was part of a firearms package approved by state lawmakers in response to mass shootings in other states. the measure would have banned future sales of most semiautomatic rifles with detachable magazines. the governor did approve a bill making california the first state to ban bills for

hunters. they say the lead endangers wildlife. the man arrested for beating an envelope star's son could face charges now that the boy has died. patterson is in jail on aggravated assault of the 2-year-old son running back of adrian peterson. it happened at his mother's home in south dakota. she was not there at the time. the boy died today. his brain showed trauma usually associated with being hit or shaken. at practice peterson thanked fans and teammates for showing him support. he plans to play in sunday's game. >> it is something i thought that got me through tough times. the guys in here, that's what i need. >> peterson has seen tragedy before. a drunk driver killed one of his brothers when he was 8 and another brother shot months before his rookie season. starting next month, google plans to put the user's personal information in on-line ads.

google announced the change to the terms of service as of november 11th. that means if you post a review on google plus or a picture on picassa, they could appear in an ad on a friend's google page. google says there will be a way to opt out. facebook made a similar on announcement in august. a new line of stamps encouraging children to stay active is stuck at the printers after the first lady objected to some of the images. the president's counsel on fitness launched by michelle obama thought three stamps encouraged unsafe activity. it includes somebody cannonballing into a pool and a child doing a handstand without a helmet. there is also this one on the left with a skateboarder not wearing knee pads. the stamps are printed, but they could end up in the trash. the postal service prints 20 million stamps per run. >> that's a lot to throw away.
