are moving forward. meantime, the lieutenant governor gavin newsom believes a deal can happen tonight. the marathon bargaining session began today with both sides feeling the pressure of a midnight strike deadline. but there was optimism from unions. the talks were moving in the right direction. >> we'd like to drive towards a bargain today. today is the day. so stay tuned. >> unions say supplemental issues like worker safety are getting resolved. the lieutenant governor is sitting in on talks. he believes an agreement can happen, and at this point it would make no sense for unions to strike. >> i feel a level of comfort, but in this case, now growing level of confidence that they'll get a deal. >> b.a.r.t. riders are preparing for a possible strike on monday which could leave stan green without a ride to work. he is so frustrated with the talks, he wore this sign in front of the building. >> this is pure insanity.

we want the union representatives to come out and set us free. tell us. they will not strike.. reporter: that man wants to see a law which prevents b.a.r.t. from going on strike. federal mediators sent by the white house is now sitting in on talks. he arrived this afternoon. our cries will -- crews will be here all night to bring you the latest. the last strike happened during the fourth of july holiday so many people were on vacation. if a strike happens this week, it is expected to be much worse for commuters. lillian kim is live in berkeley with a look at how you can survey that nightmare commute. reporter: people we talked to say they have a plan in case there's a strike. chattered buses will again be an option. that service is between 9 east bay b.a.r.t. stations and downtown san francisco. people can catch a bus between

five 2-5:00 to 8:00 a.m. at these stations. even service from san francisco back to those stations will be 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. as for ac transit, it will increase bus service as needed, especially on transbay lines. ac prance sit bus stops located inside the b.a.r.t. stations will be moved off b.a.r.t. property. the san francisco bay ferry is another option. service will be expanded. 12 boats in operation instead of the usual eight. many others will telecommute or car pool. >> i think that is what most offices do, and 80% do. and 20% that actually show up, don't need to commute. they live within walking distance. >> probably car pool with friends, call up some buddies and see if they're headed to where i'm headed. just take my bike on b.a.r.t.

a 72-year-old san francisco man is back home tonight, recovering from being lost 18 days in the mendocino national forest. gene penaflor and but disappeared. he told his family he and his friend separated before he fell and knocked himself out. he was alone for the next 18 days. >> he ate squirrels, whatever he could catch. he ate lizardses. he ate a couple frogs, snakes, and survival mode kicked in. when you have no food for 18 days, whatever protein you can get, you eat it. a group of hunters and a search team from the sheriff's office found penaflor yesterday. >> a man is in custody under suspicion of dui after smashing his car into a house in hayward.
