a bart strike has been pushed back by the unions. there is a delay though tonight. the two sides remain in a standoff. good evening. i'm ama dates. we begin with breaking news on the bart contract talks. just minutes ago the union announced they will delay a strike for 24 hours. during that time they want bart to withdraw the contract of oner and return to the bargaining table. bart made its, quote, final offer around 4:00 p.m. ending face-to-face talks. local politicians spoke out less than an hour ago and they want bart to get back to the bargaining table. they are also asking for the unions to put off a strike. we have live team coverage with more on some new options if there is a strike come tuesday. first to oakland where sergio has details on this delay. sergio?

>> a lot of the details have developed in the last 15 minutes. as you mentioned the union said they are not happy with this deal. they have said they will not go on strike tonight, but they are planning on going on strike in 24 hours. that is midnight tuesday if there is no movement from the management of bart. bart's general manager said the numbers they have offered and the deals they have given is the best the system can give. >> these folks are given a 3% raise each year and it is a 12% package, 4% for pensions and 9.5% for medical. it is good for them and good for us. >> our members and our riders deserve better than this. we are not going to go on strike because the public deserves to have a system that works. >> local lawmakers voice concerns over negotiations. >> so when bart management

cutoff negotiations by putting forward a final of oner at 4:00 p.m., we were disappointed and we felt that it did a lot of damage. >> a group of bart employees came to rally and offer support to their negotiating team. >> what do you want? >> when do you want it? >> they wanted to know if they should show up for duty or hit the picket lines. through most of the night, most of the information came from bart management's lead negotiator. >> we have and can put out a good proposal. >> bart's team returned after a two-hour break. we were told we would be summoned back if they had questions or comments of the deal on the table. he is the chief of the federal mediation service and he is an obama uh .y. appointee. washington is paying close attention to the talks. lieu

tenant govern -- lieutenant governor gavin newsom has been here. >> it would be preposterous at this stage when you are getting this close to put at risk your reputation and the economy of the entire region. >> so here is the bottom line if you plan to take bart tomorrow morning, the trains will continue running. however, i was talking with a spokesperson for bart and they say that bart management is not going to move at all on the numbers. they say they will return tomorrow, and they will continue talking with the unions. however, that will be some of the side issues that will be on the table. they cannot move on any of the money numbers. if you are going to be using bart on tuesday it is probably a pretty good idea to start looking at will turn tiff -- looking at alternative plans. i can say that the unions have two weeks to consider this deal and the deal will then be

to bed at night and not knowing if bart will be open or not. and we need to bring this to is a close -- to a close. >> that's the general manager of bart. she says the unions have two weeks to consider their offer and to take a vote. after two weeks the deal is off the table. a spokesperson for bart says their negotiating team will be here tomorrow for that one more day of negotiations. but that spokesperson says the negotiating team will not entertain any changes in salary or pension. just before both sides came out to make their announcements, there was also a group of local politicians who came out and basically blasted bart management for the last offer. local politicians say they hoped negotiations would continue. one more day and then if there is not any changes in this last deal, the unions say they will hit the picket lines. reporting live in oakland, abc7 news.
