>> live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news it is 6:00 a.m. we have bart: the trains are returning. but strike fears are just delayed by a day for commuters after talks ended in a new offer and new accusations. matt keller has the coverage on that. matt? >> both sides left at 2:30 this morning. the unions are upset that management put down the tineal offer and are threatening to strike tomorrow if no deal is reached today. here are the numbers from the offer. bart says the last, best and final offer is $7 million more than the offer on friday. the 3 percent wage increase a year over four years but workers have to pay 4 percent more for the pension and 9.5 percent more for medical. union leaders have said the give backs in benefits take away most if not all of the wage increases

leaders said at 2:30 this morning what it would take to avoid a strike. we are coming back tomorrow and we hope they will rescind their last, best, and final office so we can continue to negotiate in good faith and achieve an agreement. >> trying to bring this to a close, the bay area is tired of going to bed at night and not knowing if bart is open. it has been long enough. >> the general manager says she will give the unions two weeks to consider the offer and take it to a vote of the members and says it is the best the system can give. local lawmakers voiced concerns of the negotiations some say they were disappointed the management put down a final offer. leaders will be back here at 12:30 but they are warning the public to be prepared for a possible strike tomorrow. leyla gulen? we have 41 trains that are running and it is holiday lite. happy columbus day.

in the east bay through richmond we have a report of a possible pothole causing some damage westbound 80. the wreck is on the shoulder. there is slow traffic coming into el cerrito but it eases up into albany and toward berkeley. a 80 is getting heavier by the minute at 45 minutes from tracy to dublin and highway 4, westbound from antioch to concord at 21 minutes and marin county is clear. would will talk about live doppler 7 hd and get you out the door this monday morning, it is quiet. you need a heavier coat, it is cooler in most areas because of the dry air. the next 12 hours, about 51 degrees and sunny 67 at noon and topping out in the low-to-mid 70's at 4:00 and back in the mid-60's. inland we have temperatures in the 40's in most areas and accident at noon and mid-to-upper 70's above average

in the afternoon but cooling again and breezy in the hills in the evening. at the coast, 39 at half moon bay, and most of us are in the mid-to-upper 40's and sunny and flirting with the upper 60's for the better part of the afternoon and cooling quickly at 59 by 7:00. have a good-sized it could. bart commuters breathe a sigh of release. what about tomorrow? we are at walnut creek with amy hollyfield. >> right now the current mood is relief and happiness with trains running today and many riders say they went to bad not know if they would have a train ride this morning. some had the plan "b" ready to go and many say they are getting tired of this. >> it is hard to sleep because you do not know if you have to make other arrangements. it is putting a damper on the

weekend. hopefully they can work everything out. workers are here at the walnut creek bart station this morning reminding riders about a free service that gives transportation information. it is important riders stay informed and keep the man b ready to go because bart workers say they could strike tomorrow. they still do not have a deal. riders have to watch, wait, and wonder. right now, though, they are happy and relieved. >> if the unions strike bart has chartered 200 buses, almost three times the number it had on hand for the july walk out. they will run from these nine stations: el cerrito, concord, lafayette, walnut creek, west oakland, dublin/pleasanton, san leandro, hayward, and fremont. despite the options some riders are not thrilled about taking the bus.

>> i have never taken the bus so i don't foe how that works. >> now is bad. been waiting for an hour for the bus. >> it runs weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and from 3:00 to 7:00 and you need to buy a round trip ticket in the morning. >> the transportation commission is encouraging people to telecommute if they can in the event of a strike. san lenadro public library will offer free wi-fi and public work space which is available from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 o'clock p.m. tomorrow and wednesday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. thursday and friday. if you cannot telecommute the ferry will equity expand service with telephone boats in operation rather than the usual eight boats with an additional landing at the san francisco ferry building to reduce dock congestion. >> we have a complete lit --

list of resources for you at abc7 news.com . you -- richmond police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man found in a mangled car. this is what they found at ohio avenue and 7th after "shot spotter" sensors picked up gunshots. he crashed his car after being shot and investigators have not released any suspect information. >> a san francisco man is back home this morning after surviving 18 days alone, injured and lost in a row most canyon of mendocino county. the 72-year-old gave thumb's up at the medical center. his family greeted him after he was pulled from a deep canyon. he went hunting september 24 and goal and knocked himself out and he came to, alone, cold, and

hungry. >> ate squirrels, and he ate lizards, a couple of frogs, he ate snakes and survival mode kicked in. when you have no food whatever protein you can get, you eat it. >> the search-and-rescue team assisted in the search and teams call thed it off after two days because they could not find a trace of him. on saturday a group of hunters heard the cries for help and rescuers found him. >> the san carlos city council will discuss a pipeline that was shut down over safety. it is ordered to be remain shut although a court injunction was lifted last week. the order to close the line came after an interim memo from pg&e by an engineer expressed concerns that the pipeline could explode like the one in san bruno that killed eight people which runs under britain avenue.

>> time for a look at the commute on this columbus day. leyla gulen? >>guest: we have 41 trains that are currenting running and we have a couple of problems, however, although it is the holiday. we have a lot of heavy traffic over 580 but, first, i want to get to vasco road where we have a report of a grass fire and it is bone dry. there is no mystery that this is going to be a fire here and there. however, it looks like crews get that under control and what is out-of-control is the bumper-to-bumper traffic that is packed from tracy to dublin you can see 21 miles per hour is the top speed and it picks up and beyond vasco road it is slow-and-go to the dublin interchange. outside, the bay bridge toll plaza shows cash paying lanes are loaded up and metering lights are not on. speaking of the devil, here is

agency. a court hearing takes place tomorrow. this is not the first time the boy has been in trouble. his father says he has pleaded for help with his son but officials say they could not do anything until the boy did something more serious than running away from home. >> more people are shopping at ikea, the retailer says sales jumped 3.1 percent last year, the strongest growth in china but there is significant growth in north america. it is seen as a good gage of globe construction with two bay area stores in emeryville and east palo alto. >> now, leyla gulen, how is commute? >> you need bart to find your way around that houston ikea store. the bay area shows things moving around well but we do have hotspots in the usual places with plenty of slowing.

i can barely sleep wondering if we would have a bart strike. though bart strike today. we have 47 trains running on time. we have a couple of crashes in san jose northbound 101, over to the shoulder and not causing any delays. as we look at san jose, everything else is running at top speed so it could be holiday lite out here and it is columbus day and if you are going to be making that commute to work you will be pleasantly surprised. we have this crash northbound 101, it sounds like that is over to the shoulder, northbound and southbound, not causing any problems with a look outside it is going to be the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city, and a buildup of traffic but all running smooth. >> thank you. leyla gulen, nice to see you and nice to be back. here is what is going on, the visibility is high everywhere, and maybe haze around santa rosa with the dry air and no fog.

our morning with the bart strike threat. the trains are running this morning but there is no deal between the transit agency and the unions. a strike now is looming over tomorrow morning. matt keller will tell us where the negotiations now stand. matt? >> talks ended a few hours ago here. union workers say if no deal is reached by midnight, they will strike tomorrow. here is new video of both sides leaving the caltran building this morning at 2:30. bart made the last, boast, and final offer yesterday at 4:00. it is $7 million more than friday's offer. they were disappointed that there was a final offer and felt it damaged the negotiations. 89 leaders were happy to see sever politicians getting a look at what was taking place. >> we came down to see what was going on and they have a very good awareness of what is

happening opposed to what is filtered to them. there was over 20 people that came down to see exactly what was going on. they got a taste of what is happening. >> these folks are given a 3 percent raise a year and the total package is 12 percent, 4 percent for pentagon, and 9.5 percent for medical. it is good for them and us. >> the he of federal mediation service joined the talks yesterday and appointed by prove and is an indication that washington is paying close attention. the spokesman says that management is not going to move on any of the economic issues but they say they will talk to the unions about the side issues. negotiators will be back later today at the caltran building but as far as bart negotiators go they will only return if the mediator calls them back. >> now the commute on this monday morning.

pumpkins. good morning, nick. >> i have been here all morning watching these guys before dawn roll in the huge pumpkins. this is almost like a title fight but the opponents are meeting in the ring, they will be meeting on the scale. look at this video from last year, we are talking about the annual pumpkin weigh off, a huge event in san mateo county taking place this morning at half moon bay and it is a prelude to the art and pumpkin festival on friday and saturday. last year an oregon man set a new record for the half moon bay pumpkin contest and won first rise for the pumpkin that weighs 1.775 pounds. that is huge! the current world record of 2,032 pounds could be broken by two guys from napa. one of the guys told me what he says is his secret to growing a huge pumpkin. >> got to have a great seed to
