and thrive. bart strikes tomorrow as we first reported on twitter. right now talks between bart and its unions continue, but at this hour still no deal in place. good evening, everyone. i'm larry beil in for dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson. we have team coverage and let's go to our abc7 news transportation reporter. heather ishimaru is live where the talks are taking place. >> carolyn, we were expecting the unions to come down with a strike or no strike announcement at 10:00. instead we got federal mediator george cohen at 10:30 saying progress is being made, and the unions authorized him to speak for them. >> negotiations have been continuing. the parties are totally engaged. some progress has been made. >> you have a federal mediator

and there are only a few federal mediators in the country working and a few are here. you have a presidential appointee observing the process and seeing what can happen. hopefully people will be responsive to that and hopefully the bart board of directors will consider what they are jeprodizing in the bay area and act more responsibly. >> so talking will continue into the night. what does that mean? well over the last two nights talks went until 1:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. could there be a deal by sun -- sunrise on thursday? the only people who know aren't talking. in oakland, heather ishimaru, abc7 news. >> heather, wishful thinking. as the daily strike talk continues bart riders are growing more and more frustrated. they are waiting to see if the trains will be running in the morning. nick talked with a bunch of them and joins us in daly city now. nick? >> i can tell you i met people who live in all different parts of the city.

they have to get to various places. they say it is this uncertainty that hangs over their head like a dark cloud. >> it has been frustrating for me because i get off at 7:00 in the morning. i work in the city. do i catch the bart? >> very frustrating because i live across the bay and i have to make arrangement. i have to stay in the city so i can go to work. >> not knowing before you get to bed because god know hows you will get to work the next day. >> as heather mentioned the federal mediator asked both sides not to discuss where they are in the negotiation process with the public. we don't know how close they are in an agreement which means we could be in the same position again tomorrow. in daly city, nick smith, abc7 news. >> nick, thank you. although there will not be a strike tomorrow if a work stopage comes here is what to look are to. bart has 200 buses that will run from nine stations.

safety. a union president issued a challenge today. >> go and check out the daly city break room with mice running through them and walls are urine running down them. we are talking about issues that affect the health and well being of our members. >> we did check out the break room at the daly city bart station and it is at the end of the stirwell. the union worker showed us around. we didn't see rodents, but it did smell like urine. trans rents your nate on the stairs and it runs inside and that is just one of the health concerns. >> it is not sanitary. there is a row department problem and -- rodent problem and an ant problem. we have had mice in there. it is an an old place. >> that is not the official break room and they say the manager lets them use it because it is close to the break. the official room has showers and running water and meets

all safety and sanitation standards. there will be no strike tonight x but ac transit workers resume talks with management today. it was the governor who stepped in to avert the immediate strike threat. ama dates has the latest. >> ac transit riders can rest easy learning there will not be a strike. those who rely on ac transit have governor brown to thank. he stepped in and ordered an investigation into the contract dispute. >> fantastic especially with bart and everything going on it is ridiculous. >> the alternative would have been extremely difficult. >> kind of confused. trying to figure out what was i going to do? some people can pick you up, but that is harsh on them to get up early. >> even though the governor has stepped in, ac transit says there is still frustration because the previous two agreements with the union were later rejected by union members. >> we have not heard why.

we have not gotten any new demands. we have not gotten any new proposals. we are kind of in the dark as to what move we ought to make next. >> for now there can be no strike until the board investigates for the next seven days. they will report back to the governor who will decide if it is appropriate to ask a court to order a 60-day cooling off period. ama dates, abc news. the government shutdown is now officially over with the president signing a bipartisan compromised bill late tonight. earlier in the evening the house followed the senate and approved the compromised bill to reopen the government and prevent a default. but the 11th hour deal is only a temporary fix. it funds the government until january 15th and extends the debt limit until february 7th. president obama says the work is just beginning. >> there is a lot of work ahead of us including our need to earn back the trust of the american people that has been lost over the last few weeks. we can begin to do that by

found safe. it started when stephanie thomas stepped out of her suv in san francisco's mission district last night. a woman then hoped into the driver's seat as stephanie snapped pictures of her husband and his cousin. the woman drove away. mckay tried to jump on to the moving vehicle. >> i think the hardest part of the whole thing was watching the car turn the corner and out of my sight. that's the moment when you are like, okay, this is now out of my control. >> i am grateful that even through that long 35 minutes i did have this underling feeling that it is going to be okay. >> a man found the suv blocking the driveway on sweeney street a few miles away. he called police when he saw the children strapped into their car seats in the back of the car. no arrests have been made. an armed robber targeted a group of high school soccer players in oakland this afternoon. the players noticed two men going through their backpacks at lowell park around 3:30 p.m. our media partner, the oakland tribune reports the players

receiving an outpouring of support from family, friends and even strangers. carolyn tyler explains how her story is it bringing the community together. >> we are going outside and picking flowers and looking at butterflies. >> delaney was a lively 2 and a half-year-old until last month. these are his photos of his little girl. she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and now undergoing chemotherapy. fortunately the family is not coping alone. >> delaney didn't have a choice to have her head shaven. i did to support her and her family. >> this is one of the things is helping to lift their spirits. one by one the firefighters at the livermore pleasanton fire department are losing their locks. delaney's father has been part of the crew here at engine 1 for eight years. >> it is to show that little extra about how much we care about per lynn and his family. >> it is not just co-workers.

>> hope she gets better. san francisco's coit to you wire will -- tower will close to undergo repairs. the work includes fixing water damage around the historic murals and removing asbestos. the city expects to reopen coit tower in mid-april. the long anticipated fourth bore of the tunnel is set to open a month from today. they report november 16th as the tentative opening date. the $417 million project is designed to bring much needed relief to commuters who live east of the tunnel or travel regularly through the heys -- through the east bay hills. >> it is being called the secret addiction. a growing number of women are abusing alcohol. dui arrests roup 30% and the weight is dropping from then. the number of women seeking treatment for alcohol abuse has tripled. it can be a sneaky addiction for women who hide it for years from their loved ones. >> i drink nightly.

clouds or fog from the exploratorium camera. trans america, still mild in oakland and 63 right now is a san jose. look who dropped off considerably. half moon bay, 48 degrees after a high temperature in the low 80s. from the emeryville camera we are looking tore interstate 80 and you can see for miles. temperatures inland at a different story. protected from the wind or sheltered from the wind you are in the 50s from santa rosa to concord to livermore. here is a view from the east bay hills camera and you can see a light breeze so the camera is not bouncing looking back toward san francisco. cool to chilly by morning with clear skies. we are looking at a cooling trend into the weekend and beyond and no rain is expected the next seven days. here is the satellite and the radar. this cold front is passing through north of the bay area. we did see our high temperatures fall in santa

rosa and napa, but it was awhile before the other areas would -- it will be awhile before they see the drop in temperatures. the front coming through did create a beautiful sunset. it brought us high clouds and you may have seen them. this is a view from the east bay hills camera. you can see how gorgeous the sunset looked. let's check out week ahead. are we expecting major changes? not really. 78 tomorrow and a slight bump up. and then tapers. it will cool going into the midweek next week time period. cool start for most of the bay area with 40s, 50s and the chilliest will be in the north bay. upper 30s there. if you do walk to bart and bart is running tomorrow, you will want to grab a sweater or jacket. it will be on the cool to chilly side. 78 in san jose and 82 in morgan hill. pleasant 80 qun los gatos and 78 redwood city and 75 in millbrae. low 70s near the coast.
