>> abc7 news starts right now. >> what should have been friday lite was frustrating as bart workers go through with the threatened strike. that is leaving scores of trains idle in the yards and stations closed for business. >> good morning, i am here for kristen sze. >> this is the second bart strike in four months. now there is no end in sight. we will see how it is affecting traffic. here is the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see things are moving pretty well. that is good news. >> we will look at the san mateo bridge. it looks good. it has been the busiest bridge.

but things have calmed down. >> the golden gate bridge shows fog but traffic is moving quite well. that is good news all the way around at this moment. >> abc7 news reporter, matt keller, joins us from lake merritt in oakland. matt? >> there is a picket line. i spoke with bart management and no negotiations are scheduled if now. that could change at any moment. that means workers are stilt striking. several showed up at the bart station at 4:00 a.m. and promised to picket until they have a deal. workers gathered at bart stations but rather than running the trains they were holding signs. a few hours earlier at 5:30, they were literally attacked. we saw a man upset of the strike throw a cone at them. half an hour later bart police arrested him. it wasn't all negative. several people driving by honked

in support of the unions. union negotiators say talks broke down yesterday not because of the economic issues like wages and pensions but because of work rules. they say management is asking for too much and it could lead to unreasonable working conditions. >> what is your shift? what is your assignment? what is your job for the day? maybe you have a specialization in one area and you are asked to move to an area you don't. the rules in the contract are to help decide how that is done. >> management says the negotiating teams be open to returning to the bargaining table. work rules are used in every other transportation system in the united states and are needed to modernize the system and give management flexibility with employees. >> we want to be in charge of our scheduling and overtime. the unions have taken that process over because what happened once, if that sets the standard for the rest moving

forward. >> bart management says some of the trains are running to deliver to managers and bart police to their strike assignments. >> thanks, matt. we were on the road all morning long giving us a front review of traffic using our cell7 technology and it was smooth until 6:45 when it changed to bumper-to-bumper traffic approaching the bay bridge toll plaza leading into san francisco. car pooling is strongly encouraged during the strike. this is video of the lines for casual car pooling during the bart strike in supply. car pool lane hours on interstate 80, 880 and 680 are being extended from 5:00 in the morning until 7:00 in the evening and c.h.p. says all available officers will be out in first to make the commute as smooth as possible. >> east bay commuters tried out the bart plan "b" this morning trading the trains for limited services open buses. how did it go?

our news reporter is at the walnut creek bart station. one of the busy spots. >> they had to reshuffle buses when they realized the demand would be high in walnut creek here and in fremont and they think they accommodated everyone who wanted a bus ride. there was no need to run for a bus this morning at the walnut creek bart station. as soon as one filled you, an empty was ready. people still seemed rushed and upset on this first day of the bart strike. >> i am frustrated. frustrated. i stopped checking the news because... >> i feel nervous. i don't know how to go. or how long it will take. >> bart provided buses to shuttle people from the east bay to the city and will bring them home tonight. the walnut creek station what busy. bart managers called for more buses to come than originally mapped. but at 7:20 one bus sat, waiting

for people. >> it was less than a madhouse than i expected because it was friday and a late notice. people might have said, i am saying home. >> it is not so bad. it was worse in july when bart first struck. >> that was the sentiment from those who took a.c. transit buses. >> last time the lines were around the cramp and -- around the corner and cramped. >> the morning went smooth but the commuters know there could be trouble ahead. >> i am concerned about this afternoon and there will be a lot of traffic but hopefully i can get on the bus and come back home. >> i want to emphasize this is a round help trip experience. if you didn't grab a ticket here at a bart station this morning and take the bus in you will not be allowed to get on the bus to come back to the east bay. it is for round trip travel

others. i tracked people to get a sense of how longs it is taking to get to the city and the busiest time is about 6:00 this morning and that is when demand was high for the buses and the bus that last here at 6:00 a.m. it took an hour and a half to get to the city and at 5:00 a.m. it took 40 minutes. >> thank you. as the ferry service gets people where they need, now in are big problems in oakland at the jack london square terminal. what are you seeing, nick? >> the problem hasn't been the ferries. people have gone on the ferries without any problem. but people have had to purchase a ticket. during bart you have to have a ticket before you board the ferry. otherwise you use a clipper card. people were not prepared for the 25 minute wait to buy a ticket. >> this is the san francisco ferry building. >> commuters leaving from ferry landing lined up after 5:00 a.m. hoping to get the jump on fellow ferry riders but learning others

had the same idea. >> i like the ferry. i don't want to have to take it. >> extra staff was on hand to help the new riders unfamiliar with using the ferry. the announcement of the strike put the ferry agency to add more boats. >> last strike the ferry was so con jested i could not get to south san francisco. >> i woke up at 7:00 and had a panic. >> thousands of commuters had to find other ways into the city during the second bart strike this year. this view from sky 7 in july shows jammed lines of commuters waiting to board the ferries. san francisco bay ferry carried more than 7,000 people the first morning of that strike. that was up from a typical morning of 2,500. last strike lasted four days before the government stepped in, a move that isn't an option this time. >> this is my next option. i will see how it works. if it is crazy i will have to think of something else.

a muni bus hits and kills a bicyclist this morning. abc7 news, katie marzullo, is on the scene at division streets at bryant. >> a big intersection. you can see the accident and how it happened is in tact. police say that the driver is cooperating. the driver was driving down 11th into the intersection and he hit a man on a bicycle around 8:45 this morning. that bicyclist died here. we do not know who was at fault. i talked with the bicyclist who comes through here each day and he says he is not surprised this happened. >> it is pretty sketchy. there is a lost traffic with the five-way intersection and bicyclists disobey lights when there is no traffic. who is to say what happened? it is sketchy.

definitely. >> there is a spokesman on the scene with san francisco transit agency and he says that the driver in this case has been with muni 10 years and he says that three dozen people were on the bus at the time of the accident and some of them are witnesses talking with the police. it could be a while before this intersection re-opens. police are still on the scene, still investigating exactly what happened out here. >> north carolina 6th graders got terrifying lessons. a school employees dressed as a gunman and stormed into classes with a fake gun and mask. the incident was "an enrichment less son," to make the kids think of how they would respond if the school was end attack. some parents were horrified. now new details of the case of two florida girls accused of bullying the classmates so viciously that the police say

the commit committed suicide. the boys at the center of the case, who was dating the 14-year-old accused of cyberbullying the 12-year-old rebecca sedwick. the attacks were from jealously over the attention of the boyfriend. the boy does not think his girlfriend is responsible for a facebook posting saying she didn't care what rebecca was dead. >> did you know of that? >> i thought someone hacked her. >> how often do you think of rebecca? >> almost every day knowing she got bullied. i could have stopped it. >> he is just a baby himself. >> the 14-year-old girl is in jail and she and another 12-year-old are charged with stalking. >> a criminal investigation is underway avid i don't surfaced showing boy scout troop leaders knocking over rock formations in utah that are millions of years

horns on the bridge and we do not know how it got stuck. those horns, though, are 70 years old. >> aliens. >> that is a new one. >> good way to go into friday. >> absolutely. >> want do talk about some warm weather and some cool weather depending on where you are. >> trying to make everyone happy. we will show you what is going on. i showed you one picture with the clouds along the coast and this is how it looks from live doppler 7 hd we have five miles visibility at half moon bay and that is up from this morning, we had dense fog along the coast and that is going to dissipate as we led over the next couple of hours and i don't see a repeat performance at least not in this fashion as this thick and this widespread but the cooling trend that it kicks in today, i do believe, that will last as the weekend so our 70's, our widespread 70's along the coast, they could be behind us right now and it is 534 at half moon bay and 59 in san francisco and temperatures are running cooler especially around the bay

shoreline low-to-mid 60's than just about 24 hours ago and same in the north bay but the south bay and the east bay valleys, temperatures are close to where they were yesterday near 70. this is how it looks from the exploritorium at sunny san francisco and this is the backdrop to talk about what is going do happen today. sunshine and warm temperatures away from the coast and above average highs all weekend, again, away from the coast and a slow cooling for all of us neck week but right now still keeping the next seven to eight days dry. in the upper 70's to near 80 and cloud cover at 74, and 74 in millbrae and near 80 on the peninsula and mid-60's along the coast, and low-to-mid 70's around downtown and south san francisco and sausalito with upper 70's to near 80 in the north bay valley and temperatures will warm rapidly the next couple of hours and mid-60's at your beaches and along the east bay shore we will have mid-to-upper 70's today and into the east bay valley and this is where the widespread warm will be and we will have low 80's. tonight, the temperatures are the same as this morning, a lost

40's inland and 50's around the bay and the cloud cover along the coast and that is not so extensionive and enough to keep half moon bay at 47 degrees. speaking of half moon bay, are you readed there this weekend? both days we have clouds in the morning, temperatures around 52 weapon it ins at 9:00 and mid-to-upper 60's with increasing sunshine in the afternoon and if you are going for the 7:00 breakfast, though, pancake breakfast, it will be in the 40's so dress for that. at petaluma, they have a fall festival here for kids both days and 63 at 11:00 and all the way in the mid-to-upper 70's in the afternoon. tomorrow is taste of oakland dropping to 64 when it ended. and a marathon in san francisco for women in san francisco, you can get into the boston marathon by postage good time here. it will be chilly at 6:00 sunday morning and then as we head through the 1:00 o'clock, 6 1/2 hour timeframe to finish the marathon temperatures are in the low-to-mid 60's. here is the seven-day forecast:
