bay bridge. earlier tonight, it was worse. this video looks like it slowed down, but it is not. it was realtime at that time. it took some drivers more than an hour to get to the sky way. it has been a mess. good evening. i'm dan ashley. carolyn johnson is off tonight. there is no end in sight sorry to say as bart and the own yens continue -- and the unions continue to argue. a lot of frustrated commuters. >> a lot of them hopefully aring paing lots of patience even though the traffic is backed up on the freeways heading to the bay bridge. the good news is that right now traffic on surface streets in the city has eased up a bit at least in the last couple hours. but on this first day of bart's fall strike, there was that such thing as rush hour. there were several hours of traffic gridlock. this was a line of cars waiting to get to the bay bridge at 8:00. it was a crawl through city streets.

>> it takes me about 35 minutes. >> literally two miles from here. >> how long did it take you? >> about 45 to an hour. >> to avoid the traffic back up lots of people tried getting out of the city early. with no bart trains running the afternoon commute turned into an evening odyssey. >> i can see it going over the bridge. >> for the casual carpoolers the traffic made for really long waits to get home. >> usually it is about 30 minutes to get home. it is usually not too bad. but it doesn't look like it will be 30 minutes today. >> plenty of drivers stopped by to pick up a few passengers going their way across the bay. but it wasn't easy for some to even get to the designated pick up spot. >> i went to the old carpool section and some lady that was in a muni thing directed us two blocks that way and one back that way. >> even a tourist bus rolled up to carry would 5 chuters to

the east bay. 25 commuters to the east bay. it started early and then stretched until late. >> i have to take my wife early in the morning. >> they are dreading a repeat common day. in san francisco, abc7 news. hundreds of commuters waited in long lines at the trans bay terminal in san francisco to board buses home this afternoon. ac transit and even bart added buses to help with the extra load of passengers today. similar sites at the ferry terminal and long lines during the morning and the afmmute. commute. the san francisco bay ferry says the ridership numbers more than doubled today. ferry service will be increased to accommodate additional riders. there was a glimmer of hope late this afternoon when the unions announced they had a proposal to end the strike immediately. but it is a nonstarter as far as bart management is concerned. alan wang explains why. >> the unions are offering to

call off the strike if bart agrees to let an arbitrator decide the issue causing the stalemate. bart rejected the offer. the issue is workplace rules. for years they protected workers, but bart says they are outdated and need to be changed in order to save money so they can use it to pay for the salaries and benefits the workers want. >> for instance maintenance workers who do inspection are not allowed to use ipads and send information to the computers. instead they are required by the contract to write handwritten notes. >> the unions say gutting the workplace rules would give bart too much power. unless bart can gain the flexibility it says there is no deal. >> we can fight long and fight hard. what is motivating us to end the strike is the suffering that we hear? >> it has been a long 6: day. 6:30 in the morning until now. >> right now it is 8:00. >> yeah, i get home about 8:30.

it helps you and a half tbait the -- navigate the freeways and shows you the sticking points in realtime. follow us on twitter at abc7 news bay area for breaking news updates. we are all over that story, but we will move on. dramatic new video tonight of a big rig accident on highway 101. look at the right hand side of your screen here. watch this. you can see the big rig swerve across traffic and then flip over the center divider into on coming traffic. this accident that happened in redwood city was caught by a limo driver's dash camera, and there it goes again. seven cars were damaged and we are glad to tell you that there were no serious injuries. when you see this accident it is quite remarkable. >> power is back on after a transformer explosion in morgan hill. nearly 5,000 people were without power after the transformer blew near tenant avenue and butterfield boulevard. it caused a grassfire, but no

structures were burned and they put that out quickly. pg&e says the power was back on for most customers by 7:00 p.m. in the mountains, a case of broken trust. a man who was supposed to protect the interest of children is instead accused of preying on them. he has been a youth counselor, advocate and coach. now as abc7 news anchor ama dates explains, there is another label from police, molester. >> brian criswell from santa cruz is accused of child molestation. they say he engaged in illegal conduct with two minors while volunteering for the casa program. it stands for court uh .ed special advocate. volunteers offer support for abused and neglected children. before being sworn in as an officer of the court the volunteer faces an extensive background check. the executive director says they dismissed c ri swell as soon as they learned about the

investigation. he had been a a volunteer since 2008. >> anyone who would do harm to a child or take part in this type of criminal behavior really has no business in being your children let alone volunteering at a child advocacy organization. >> the sheriff's office believes there may be more victims out there because of his contact with kids. he repped -- he helped coach a couple wrestling teams. >> he was with the 20122013 school year. he was hired and the district says it never received complaints of inappropriate behavior by c ri swell. he is expected to be arraigned early next week. abc7 news. a toddler is in critical, but stable condition after being shot. he was playing and a bullet hit him in the upper body and police say it came from two

hash tag dear bart. you can also send videos to the abc7 news facebook page. we will be delighted to hear from you. after a 12-year-old girl was bullied by classmates and took her own life, a tough sheriff decided to take action. tonight he is leveling a brand-new charge. he has arrested the mother of one of those accused bullies. matt gutman has the story. >> it is chilling video.a mother a mother clutching one of her children. tonight vivien is locked up in a polk county jail, the same jail as her 14-year-old daughter. >> i can tell you this, ladies and gentlemen, once again and i repeated it earlier in the week, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. >> her daughter was charged earlier this week along with a 12-year-old with felony aggravated stalking. police say the 14-year-old girl tormented rebecca sedwick before she committed suicide last month. sedwick was 12. the polk county judge says

set off. police arrested a ground services employee earlier this week and they arrested the man's supervisor too. the devices did not cause any damage. police say they were set as a prank. >> google stock topped $1,000. the company's stock shot up 14% closing at $1,011. google released a better than expected earnings report. when google went public the stock was valued at $85 a share. if you bought it at that price, you are doing okay. forget wi-fi. soon you will be able to access the internet through the nearest lamp. it is called li-fi and it uses light instead of radio waves to connect your device to the web. a special connected light bulb would flicker billions of times per second, so fast that the human eye cannot perceive it. a camera on your computer or phone would decode the blinks into data. here is the best news. it is 150 times faster than

wi-fi. now there is a drawback. light can't go through walls, swow have to stay in one room while surfing the web. amazing. jumpin jc penney iso the thanksgiving day shopping fray. most stores will open at 8:00 p.m. on thanksgiving day to kick off the holiday shopping season. that's the same time macy's announced it will be opening. the stores are following in the foot steps of other row taylors like wal-mart, target 1k3* old navy which began opening on thanksgiving day in order, of course, to boost sales. there is growing concern over the addictive nature of a popular video game called candy crush. maybe you have tried this. more than 45 million people play candy crush each month. most are women between the ages of 25 and 55. the game is free to download, but the players can buy additional lives. that's a big part of the problem. a lot of people are spending big money to keep the game going. while that is bad for them, it is certainly a sweet deal for the game's creators.
