>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us. on this sunday, october 20th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, good morning. our shallow but dense deck of low clouds and fog. certainly creating problems with zero visibility in some plays. a mile and a half, two and a half across the bay in hayward and oakland down to a half-mile. but we are looking at this shallow, dense deck to continue to erode throughout the day today. it will burn back to the coast. so mostly sunny skies on pap again with numbers climbing through the 60s by noontime. by 4:00 we are back into the

60s and 70s again with a mild to warm day on tap. a little bit more fog in the forecast tonight. but i'll let you know the specifics for high temperatures around the bay area today. talk about a bigger deal-with my accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. now to the latest in the developments with bart. the national transportation safety board is investigating the dental of two bart employees killed in a train accident yesterday. it occurred near the walnut creek station and that's where abc7 news reporter nick smith is this morning gathering the very latest information. good morning, nick. >> carolyn, good morning. the parts have all been moving so quickly. yesterday we were covering a press conference where one member of the president of a. t. u. 1555 told us we are going to take this proposal to our members. not an hour later the accident happened and it completely shifted the narrative. carolyn, the train involved in that collision that killed two bart employees remains parked on

the tracks right behind me where the accident happened, about 50 yards from where the employees were struck and killed. engineers were working in the role of track inspectors. the employees hit and killed were the seventh and eighth bart workers to die on the job in the transit's 41-year history. this was the emergency call from the train just after it struck the two works on the tracks. >> be advised, they may be bart employees. >> they were outlook for what was reported to us from an earlier train that there might be a slight dip in the rail. >> bart managers say they know who was on the train. they also tell us the train was this automatic operation, but would not say who was at the controls. one of the employees hit was a contract worker, and one was a member of afscme local 3933 who chose to cross the picket line and was authorized to do so. yesterday neither bart

management nor union officials would discuss possible ties to the safety issues of that been a major point of contention by striking union employees. now all eyes are on ntsb because they are the runs leading this investigation and the ones that will have the answer that is everyone is looking for. what happened? why did it happen? could anything have been done it prevent the cost of lives of two bart employees? in walnut creek, nick smith, abc7 news. >> nick, thank you. we just heard part or a snippet of the bart radio transmission immediately following the accident. here's more of what was >> bart emergency. bart emergency. >> bart emergency, go ahead. central. >> central, we just struck some individuals at -- be advised they may be bart employees. >> central is reporting an employee possibly struck by a train. sixteen decimal two on the c-1

between walnut creek and pleasant hill. we are trying to get a better street location so we can start medical. >> these were the sixth and seventh bart employees killed on the job during their 41-year history. the last was james strickland who died in concord in 2008. he was inspecting a track when the train hit him from behind. at the time of that accident one track was closed and two trains were heading in opposite directions on a shared track. yesterday's accident came on the second day after bart union workers walked off the job during the contentious contract battle. abc7 news reporter john alston has more from the lake merritt bart station on how workers are reacting to the loss of a colleague. >> union members of clutching candles, in addition to their picket signs outside the bart station in oakland. the strike taking on a new complexion now that deaths are involved. >> we aren't here to talk about work. two men are dead. this is an extremely tragic situation. >> like i said, we just

aren't -- we are grieving ourselves. we are trying to put it together. >> the union victim was a member of afscme union 93, which represents train controllers and some supervisors. a union official tells abc7 news says the victim was a project manager, whose job would never call for him to be out on the tracks. while afscme has not reached a deal with bart, it is not on strike, although the union was honoring the picket lines. the victim, however, decided to go to work. >> although we encourage them not to cross, it is their choice not to cross or cross and this person unfortunately decided to cross. and union officials claiming they are hearing inside information about why the track was out on the tracks in the first place. >> i'm being told that the train was training drivers to run a limited service next week. >> there's no way that managers could be trained and be up to speed certified. so, yeah, i think that this could have been avoided, but that's my own opinion.

>> for the time being strikers are concentrating on the sudden turn of events. >> two people unfortunately lost their lives, and it's very tragic. my heart goes out to the families. >> john alston, abc7 news. today will be the third full day of the bart strike. yesterday one of the unions, the smaller a.t.u. 1555, said it will vote on bart's last offer but the union's president said she does not expect members to approve it. bart spokesman rick rice said the two sides remain in communication, although they are not expected back at the bargaining table. the two sides came to an impasse over work rules on wednesday. the rules include the length of the workday and when overtime pay kicks in. this is the second strike since july. commuters are continuing to use the limited round-trip bus service to san francisco from the nine bart stations. at the transbay terminal

yesterday passengers told us the buses were up to 45 minutes late and were so packed people were forced to sit in the aisle. lines were also long at the ferry terminal in san francisco, and people did not like the experience. >> having to get through this on a saturday morning is probably, on a scale of one to ten, it is probably a nine. kind of annoying. >> today was interesting. i started in san leandro, had to get a ride over to the ferry and wait in line for about an hour. >> there is increased ferry service this weekend, including 14 departures from alameda main street and oakland to san francisco. they will be crowded. san francisco's bay ferry said friday's ridership numbers more than doubled. we have a range of resources for you here at abc7news.com to help you get around that strike, including alternate transit options and realtime traffic maps.

1:40 at the boulders apartment. the fire is now under control. seven children and five adults have been displaced. no one was injured. while the cause of the fire is under investigation, authorities say it does not appear suspicious. in sonoma county, authorities are investigating the death of a bicyclist who was hit by a car. it happened in the car of forestville around 7:30 last night at merribelle road. the driver has not been charged. according to the chp, the biker, a man in his 60s. did not have lights or reflective gear on his bike, and he was not wearing a helmet. >> in pacifica investigators are trying to determine the cause of a grass fire that came dangerously close to homes. it broke out on a hillside near manner drive just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. two homes were evacuated as the fire spread. it took firefighters an hour to get that five-acre fire under control. no structures were damaged. meteorologist lisa argen is here

a live look from our golden gate bridge camera. it has been foggy like this for several hours. but the temperatures this week should be comfortable. no rain in sight. when will all the fog go away? what is the seven-day forecast? lisa argen will be along shortly with a full accuweather forecast. >> new details in morning. a convicted felon charged in the murder of an oakland woman doesn't deny he was in a motel with the the victim the night she disappeared. sandra coke, a federal criminal investigator, was last seen alive by her daughter august 4th. five days later her body was found in a park in vacaville. in a jailhouse interview with our media partner "the oakland tribune," he said he was innocent but he doesn't deny he was at the east oakland hotel where authorities believe she likely was killed. police compared video and compared tracking video to surveillance video showing him in the same location of her car after she was murdered e had her keys and debit card when he was

arrested back in august for a parole violation. happening today, the oakland community will commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the oakland hills fire. there will be a news conference today featuring fire survivor and the fire union president. that fire, which began 22 years ago yesterday, killed 25 people and destroyed more than 3800 homes. it cost an estimated $1.5 billion in damages, and it took 72 hours for crews to get that fire under control. >> new this morning, san rafael-larkspur are looking to expand their shared fire services, according to our media partner, the "marin independent journal" the departments would share employees to cover shifts for workers who may be absent. the two cities already have an agreement in place that allows either department to respond to incidents along highway 101 between lucky drive and francisco boulevard.

the two cities also share battalion chiefs. a tragedy in florida. a wing-walker fell to his death when his parachute failed to open. it happened yesterday in the city of land o' lakes. this picture shows the wing-walker and his partner boarding their bi-plane shortly before the accident. witnesses say when the plane reached 1,000 feet, one of them fell. his body was found in a nearby neighborhood. >> new details about a man caught on tape destroying a nearly 200 million-year-old natural rock formation. [laughter] yeah! we have now modified goblin valley! >> the video shows glen taylor breaking a sandstone formation at the goblin valley park a week ago. we found out

in 2009 he filed a personal injury lawsuit against the family of a teenage girl who hit his car. the family being sued has seen this video and does not believe he is disabled as he claims. his attorney says regardless of the video, his client needs help paying his medical bills. abc7 news weather anchor spencer christian has received a special honor for his nearly four decades on television. the national academy of television arts and sciences honored him yesterday in san francisco. spencer was named to the silver circle for his contributions to the industry. spencer talked about how he got his first job as a weatherman back in 1975. >> the general manager called me into his office and he said our ratings have gone up and you have become a hit and we would like you to be our full time weatherman. but, of course, i protested. i said, no, i'm a journalist, i do news. he said we could just about double your salary if you do the weather. and i'm a weatherman!

>> sorry for the technical problems. nothing technical going on with the whether other than all the fog you are seeing out here, lisa? >> yeah. certainly being pressed to the surface. as a result we are looking at visibility as nothing around the bay and parts of the north bay. it extends down to the monterey bay and northward as well. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. sunshine in santa rosa, sunny at

concord and even the airport doing okay now. you see the city just kind of floating therewithal the gray. but the offshoreñi gradients are stronger than the onshore gradients. that means we will break out to mostly sunny conditions throughout the day and the fog will go back to the shoreline. 51 los gatos. from the east bay hills camera, also a nice vantage point here with the lower deck of stratus out there. 49 in napa. we were in the 30s earlier. 51 in concord and a sunny start in livermore at 55. here's where we sit right now. visibility improving up in santa rosa. but still just at a quarter mile. novato, napa, two and a half miles in mountain view and a mile and a half in half moon bay. oakland still looking at the fog. but take a look here with lots of sunshine. the exploratorium camera here. it depends on where you are. the fog continues to sort of

move around. as it gets compressed we will look for another mild to warm day today and cooler days will arrive by the middle of the week. it's still strong, high pressure sitting offshore. we are looking at a very light offshore push. we have fog at the surface. but the mild weather pattern continues throughout the day today. so by tonight beach hazard in effect with some very strong waves headed our way and rip currents. dangerous conditions through tuesday. keep that in mind if you are headed out to the coast. in terms of the week ahead, we are going to stay just about status quo the next couple of days. then look what happens by wednesday. there's an area of low pressure off the coast. it will slide south. it's going to stay far enough away from the coastline that i don't think we are going to get any rain out of it. i think the better chance of rain comes from around santa barbara and southern california by thursday and friday. we will watch it closely for you. today, though, keeping an eye on

the fog as it burns back and allowing for temperatures to climb through the 70s santa clara, 78 in san jose, and on the peninsula, low 70s san mateo with 60s at the coast. we will look for the fog to generally erode as it gets closer and closer to the shoreline. but temperatures will be cooler here today. 68 downtown. in the north bay, 677 petaluma with 82 calistoga and the low 70s for san leandro. oakland and castro valley checking in at 83. 80 pittsburgh and 79 in walnut creek. the accuweather forecast shows little change through the early part of the week. mild to warm temperatures. but by wednesday we will be a bit cool we're a stronger onshore push. thursday, friday, saturday more clouds and cooler conditions. abc7 news has another great weather weather resource for you to follow. that's twitter. the latest weather conditions rain or shine, and video forecasts, spare the array let's, power outage reports and

at least one of bart's two striking unions will suspend picketing today out of respect for the two workers who were killed yesterday. they were struck by a bart train neither walnut creek station. nick smith joins us live with the latest on the investigation. nick, the ntsb is now coming in. >> they are, indeed, carolyn, in fact, they are the lead agency. this has still been treated like a crime scene. if you look over there the bart police remain stationed outside the gate. the train that struck and killed two employees remains parked on the tracks about 60 yards from where the employees were hit and killed. the engineers working in the role of track inspectors. the employees were commit killed by this bart trained and they were the 7th and 8th bart

>> turning now to washington. there are questions there morning whether congress can regain the trust of the american public following the government shutdown and the last-minute escape of a debt default. today on "this week" abcs martha raditz went one-on-one with minority leader nancy pelosi. congresswoman said she doesn't blame americans to be disgusted with the shutdown. she said it's essential for the public to have transparency about washington's issues. >> we have to have facts coming forward, we have to have common sense we have to go to the table understanding that we cannot shut down and we cannot place in doubt the full faith and credit of the united states of america. >> pelosi adds there are some on the republican side who are anti--got. she said she's proud of how house and cincinnati democrats maneuvered the situation with the shutdown. san jose's police department

could face a staffing crisis as members of their graduating academy class looks for work elsewhere. our media partner, the mercury news, reports more than half the graduates are exploring job opportunities with other police agencies. a handful have already committed to the agencies. san jose police department has seen a number of their officers leaving over issues with the city concerning pay and retirement benefits. the department has lost nearly one hundred officers in the past two years. and that's each year. a young livermore girl is battling a brain tumor, but she is not fighting alone. she and her family are getting incredible support from friends and strangers. >> i was going outside, picking flowers, looking at butterflies. >> marlon's daughter was a lively two and a half-year-old until last month. these are his photos of his little girl. she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and is now undergoing chemotherapy. fortunately the family is not coping alone. >> delaney didn't have a choice

to get her head shaven. i have a choice and to help support her and her family. >> this is one of the things that delaney's family said is helping to lift their spirits. >> one by one the firefighters at the livermore pleasanton fire department are losing their locks. delaney's father has been part of the crew at engine 1 for eight years. >> it's a show, to show extra how much we care about merlon and his family. >> but it's not just co-workers. it seems everyone in livermore knows about the family. the family sometimes drops in for dinner at the sauce barbecue joint downtown. now the co-owner will have a big fundraiser next month. >> that night in particular, november 13th, will be all about delaney. i think the family will see how many people really care about what's going on in their lives. >> many people have purchased t-shirts and sweatshirts like in this say "team delaney." the dad said the community support is overwhelming.

san mateo bridge camera n the city of san mateo right now, 47 degrees. it will inch up. how much? and what about your neighborhood? lisa argen will be along shortly with a full accuweather forecast. the new exploratorium has been open in san francisco for six months. the hands-on museum is getting rave reviews and two and a half times more visitors. tonight we are presenting a special half-hour program on what keeps all those people coming back. abc7 news anchor dan ashley has a preview of one of the crazy, but scientific things you will see. >> this project calls for 300-pound block of ice, very thin wire and a motorcycle. >> this is important in understanding glaciers. >> glaciers? so far the connection is not obvious. the plan is to cut a block of ice in half, but have it still remain whole. a crazy demonstration of a physics principle.

it takes all afternoon to get it ready for be a evening exhibition. >> it is totally fascinating. >> the block has to be clear enough to see the wire cutting through it. the blanket slows the melting while the team gets the ice in position. >> is the block centered on the bike? >> next the block is looped over the ice. >> be careful. we have no idea if the block of ice is going to break. >> drop it a little more. i think it's pretty cool at the exploratorium, that's the way we get scientific concepts across, by doing wacky art pieces like this. >> by 6:00 p.m. the display is in place and curious visitors get a good look. the pressure from the hanging motorcycle is slowly pulling the wire through the block of ice but as the wire moves the ice is actually refreezing above it. when the wire gets to the bottom, the motorcycle will fall. but if the experiment works, the ice block will remain solid, not split in half by the wire. >> the ice will stay in one piece. by 7:30 the wire is almost at

the bottom. >> i give it another five minutes. >> five minutes? >> then just as we looked away for a moment -- [applause] >> the motorcycle lands perfectly upright. there is a white scar through the ice, but is it still in one piece? >> it looks solid and it feels solid. >> so why? the answer is a process called rejulation. the weight of the motorcycle puts pressure on the ice. >> and under that pressure you can make the molecules move out of the way to flow as if they are a liquid. then they flow around the wire, back to the top of the wire from the bottom, where they freeze again. >> and now the connection. this is the same process that happens under a frozen glacier to make it move slowly forward. >> i don't know where i would be able to see this.

north bay, the fog is hanging right over the water here, over the bay. so hayward and oakland looking at reduced visibility, as well as mountain view and san jose. they coast it's a little better, half moon bay. we are looking at the cooler temperatures this morning due to the low clouds and fog. and this is the exploratorium camera where you can kind of make out the city. so the patchy, dense fog this morning with another nice afternoon today. we will look for the cooler days to settle on in by the middle of the week. so between now and then, we are looking at the localized effect of the low clouds and fog banked up along the coast. a very weak sea breeze keeping the temperatures cool here and the fog situated right at the shoreline. so it will be a cooler day today for the pumpkin festival. we are looking at partly cloudy sunny conditions there. the plan for the rest of the day, then, you will notice that will have the sunshine around the bay. temperatures confined to the 60s at the coast where the fog sits. 70s mainly around the bay.

still with some 80s over into the east bay and parts of the north bay. so we will look for temperatures throughout the first couple of days in the south bay to be very warm. in fact, above-average highs. that should be in the mid-70s in san jose. look what happens by wednesday. the numbers drop off. we will see extra cloud cover certainly by the end of the work week, but not look at any rain. temperatures today, they are just about where they should be for this time of year. with 78 in san jose. 68 in san francisco. mid-60s half moon bay. 74 in santa cruz with the numbers coming out right around 80 up in wine country. 83 in livermore with morgan hill coming in at about 82 at 3:00 this afternoon. we have the fog along the coast. by the afternoon mostly cloudy to partly sunny with numbers climbing through the 60s. we will look for a few peaks of sundown there. and the days ahead feature the accuweather seven-day forecast. still sunshine and temperatures very comfortable monday and tuesday. then by wednesday we are looking
