now on abc7 news at 5:00, federal investigators are on the scene of a b.a.r.t. train accident that killed two b.a.r.t. employees. when they expect to get some answers. another work stoppage set for tomorrow could bring traffic of a different kind standstill. and how store owners in the east bay are fighting back to protect their businesses from thieves. abc7 news at 5:00 starts now. a team of investigators is now on the case after a b.a.r.t. train strikes and kills two workers. but federal investigators say will be their focus. good evening, thank you for joining us. sky 7hd was over the accident scene yesterday as local investigators responded. dispatch calls indicate there were six people on that train at the time. it's still unclear who was

behind the controls. nick smith is there tonight where federal officials are beginning their probe into the accident. nick, what's happening now? reporter: well, ntsb investigator in charge just finished speaking. we have new information. this is what he had to say. >> my concern coming out here, as it is for every investigation to find out what happened. gather the facts, and that's all we'll do is gather the facts and make the measurements, open every door, spread out with the expertise from the parties and look at every single part of what went on out here and make a determination what happened. >> his final report could take as long as six months. we learned the things they'll be looking for, video record those cabin. there nor video recorders on the trains facing outward down the track but there are cameras and digital recording inside the cabin. allowing investigators to see

who was in the cabin at the time of the accident. and they'll be working at the training and safety of workers, one thing under review, tracks and wayside safety. that means what was the section of those authorized to be on the track at the time. ntsb investigator in charge, jim farrell, said they'll take as long as they need to find out what happened and caused the death two of employees. >> every part of the operation out here, inspections, you name it. >> officials with the national transportation and safety board arrived this afternoon. they're leading the investigation into the death of a b.a.r.t. engineer and a contract worker struck and killed by a train yesterday afternoon. >> it was loud bang. >> the sound of the. pact and the disturbing scene that followed left neighbors shaken. the severity of the crash identified in this emergency call. >> fire emergency, go ahead.

>> it was gruesome. it was awful. just sad. and makes you think, what -- if they weren't on strike, this would all have been prevented. >> union workers walked off the job and continued to hold the line. b.a.r.t. officials called the accident a tragic day in b.a.r.t.'s history and resisted the opportunity to link the death of the employees and previous safety issues raised by unions. >> did you have experience in rating a train? >> the vice-president of the union insists current experience can make all the difference when it comes to safely operating equipment. >> unless you're out there every day, operating those trains and that equipment, you can't replace that experience. >> b.a.r.t. officials have not said who was operating the train or the status of their certification. they say the two engineers were performing track maintenance. >> the labor issues, the

negotiations, are not in the forefront of our mind. we just lost two people in the b.a.r.t. family. >> b.a.r.t. says the train was running to the concord station after maintenance work when the accident happened. it will about up to the ntsb to figure out what happened. >> b.a.r.t. workers are paying tribe tribute to the two men killed. and members of the union had black ribbons on their picket signs two vigils are about to begin in an hour. we'll have live reports on the tribute to the workers at 6:00. as both workers and barret bear management deal with the tragedy there are few indications of any quick resolution to the strike. now in its third day.

b.a.r.t. says its board of directors will hold a special meeting to discuss contract talks. members plan to vote on the last contract offer next week but don't expect it to pass. no negotiations are schedule. both sides say they're waiting for the other to make the first move. in a statement today, b.a.r.t. says it's open to restarting mediated talks if the mediator determines it's appropriate to resume discussions. here are some commute options for those who rely on b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. is providing charter buses from stations at 9:00 a.m. carpool lanes are expanded from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. the san francisco bay area will operate 12 boats. and m cap can get you from the east bay south to san jose, av transit will be on the regular schedule and additional trans-bay buses. we'll have the latest

beautiful shot out towards the east bay, mt. diablo, sunshine, napa, 70. and 84 in livermore. here is a look at what you can expect this upcoming work week. we'll go with more patchy dense fog overnight, mainly the bay, the peninsula, and the coast. slightly cooler temperatures near the bay and the coast tomorrow, and then we'll all begin to cool down heading toward the latter part of the work week. the cloud pattern, we started with dense fog, mainly near the coast, starting to peel away just a little bit, just in the last few hours. all of that will start to move back inland overnight tonight in fact by that 5:00 a.m. commute time, i think the golden gate bridge will probably see quite a bit of fog as well as out towards the great highway, but it should burn off -- back off the coast by around tomorrow afternoon. let me go ahead and show you the setup as we head into the latter part of our work week. we will not see a lot of changes tomorrow.

temperatures come down a few degrees, and heading into tuesday and wednesday, this low pressure system off the coast is going to bring us a very strong onshore wind component, and by wednesday, you'll notice clouds moving in, each day, even into thursday and friday, looks like we'll see more clouds and temperatures by friday will come down as much as 10 to 15 degrees, especially inland locations. so if you have been in the 80s, get ready for temperatures in the low 70s. we're keeping a close look on this beach hazard advisory. be prepared for strong rip currents and the possibility of sneaker waves. overnight temperatures with the fog in the north bay, protected valley areas, near the golden gate bridge, as well as the coast, maybe even a little mist and drizzle. we had that on the golden gate bridge last night and possibly could see that tomorrow morning. here's the highs for monday. bring it down a few degrees. 77, santa rosa.
