morning, everyone. it is 8:00 a.m. i'm katie marzullo. let's go to lisa for a check on the weather. we have been clear most of the night. and temperatures are cool, but the high clouds are streaming off the coast. so we will see more sunshine today, but starting out there is fog at the coast from half-moon pay to pacifica and moving a little across the bay. it's on the deck of the golden gate bridge, so be careful, 40s and 50s through the 9:00 hour. then by noontime, well into the 60s around the bay and inland. still cool at the coast, and by the afternoon, a very nice day. temperatures above average, 80 inland, 70 around the bay. low to mid-60s at the coast. and a cool evening ahead, but things change as soon as tomorrow. your forecast, the extended one, is coming up.

katie? lisa, thank you. we have developing news out of campbell this morning where a man was injured following a shooting at a nightclub that happened just before 2:00 in the parking lot of the spot nightclub on orchard city drive. police say security employees from the nightclub approached the group in the parking lot and asked them to turn down their music. at some point a 33-year-old employee was shot. he was taken to the hospital. he is expected to survive. the group got away in two different vehicles. one is described as a light-colored newer model four-door sedan. the other, a dark late '90s chevy can marrow. a tense standoff involving a parolee has come to an end. we are learning more about the four officers who were wounded in the shooting. aditi roy is here with more. >> reporter: this morning the small california community is reeling from the overnight gun battle that has left four cops hospitalized, including a federal agent. according to roseville police,

the shooting began at 3:00 p.m. when an immigration and customs enforcement agent was working with local cops to track down 32-year-old parolee, samuel duran. duran armed with an assault rifle opened fire hitting the c ice agent. >> we have a great law enforcement community to deal with this. >> reporter: duran ran to a relative's home where another barrage of gunfire took down three more officers. >> the other was consulting the other, and it happened so fast, he jumped a fence and now the hunt is here. >> reporter: duran escaped once again eventually barricading himself inside this vacant home before finally surrendering. and a 9 1/2-hour night of terror for these residents. >> it is a tough night for all of us. no one is immune to this sort of tragedy and this sort of

criminality. >> reporter: the suspect was taken to the hospital for routine medical clearance. he's in the process of being booked and taken to jail. aditi roy, abc news, los angeles. this morning three memo park teenagers are mourning the loss of their parents killed by a drunk driver while walking the family dog. police say the two were on choco street when the car hit them from behind and the driver was arrested for dui. ama daetz has more. >> reporter: the three children of these parents gathered at the sight of the dranlg did. the two were hit and killed on choco street by a driver menlo police say was driver. these children are devastated by the loss of their parents. they chose to share their grief to inspire others not to drink and drive. >> we don't have anyone to look up to, we didn't expect anything to happen.

we are all alone. >> reporter: they were killed just before 7:00 p.m. while on their nightly walk with their dog. police say they were in the bike lane on choco when the driver struck them from behind. >> when two people are out on a walk with their dog, and their lives are snuffed out in an instant, it is horrific in any stretch of the imagination. >> reporter: police say the driver who killed the couple is 54-year-old marjorie reitzle of redwood city. >> we took a blood test yesterday and it will take a couple weeks to get the results. >> reporter: she was convicted of misdemeanor dui last year and faces two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and two counts of felony dui. >> i just wish she would stop drinking and driving because obviously we lost our parents because of that, and we don't want that to happen to anybody else. >> she's never going to be forgiven. we lost our parents because of her. >> reporter: ama daetz, abc news. >> they will conduct an

investigation into the shooting death of andy lopez who was 13. he was shot seven times by a deputy who mistook the teenager's plastic rifle for a real ak-47. >> we want justice! we want justice! hundreds of andy's classmates marched to the so mona sheriff's office yesterday demanding justice. the deputy who shot andy is a 24-year veteran of the department. new details this morning in the disappearance of a patient who was later found dead at san francisco general hospital. the san francisco "chronicle" reports the hospital made four requests to sheriff deputies to comb the hospital for lynn spalding who vanished from her room on september 21st. a building engineer found her on october 8th while inspecting a stairwell. the hospital's chief has now told spalding's family that an employee alerted a nurse that he saw a person lying in the same stairwell back on october 4th. >> i was so shocked by the

experience of reporting that they found a body on the stairwell between the third and fourth floor that they ran away and haven't been seen since. so this is obviously someone that the san francisco sheriff's department would like to find and ask questions. >> about 150 people honored spalding during a memorial last night including relatives from her native england. happening today, a memorial will be held for a worker who was killed while unloading a truck at levi's stadium. today's memorial for 60-year-old edward linz jr. will be held in vacaville. he died october 14th after a bundle of rebar he was unloading fell on him. he was a truck driver in napa. he is the second at levi's stadium. another worker died in june after he was hit by a counter weight in an elevator shaft. a judge has denied the request of condemned serial killer joseph nazo to delay his sentencing hearing. nazo asked the judge for a delay in the hearing to have more time

to prepare. a jury unanimously ruled nazo should get the death penalty in connection with the murders of four women. meanwhile, the county is seeking reimbursement of more than $138,000 in legal costs from nazo's assets. no major problems to report at a demonstration marking the second anniversary of the occupy oakland movement. yesterday about 100 protesters marched downtown and rallied in front of city hall where they spoke out against police brutality. earlier they rallied in front of the downtown marriott where law enforcement are staging an an anti-terrorism exercise called operation urban shield. they say urban shield teaches police brutal tactics to use against occupy protesters, including scott olson who suffering a head injury. >> the police tactics is what led to an iraq war veteran almost getting killed by the police. >> well, that's a falsehood. first of all, we don't do any training in regards to crowd

control like has been alleged. >> the rally rapped up by 8:00 last night. san jose's acting police chief is going to get the job permanently. abouting chief larry escoval has been appointed to replace the chief in january. she hopes to put the appointment before the city council in november. parents in south alameda county are making themselves heard of an issue they believe will hurt their families. they are upset keizer permanente plans to close a clinic in a month. we'll look at both sides of the controversy. >> reporter: lily green is pretty good at connecting the dots on her coloring book, but when she was a few days old she recollects has to spent a few extra days at kaiser permanente. >> being with our neighbors, our family, close to our home, took a traumatic situation for our

family and made it somewhat more manageable. >> reporter: kaiser has been planning to shut down this hospital and move to a new one next summer, but during a town hall meeting, nurses raised concerns to parents after learning that pediatrics will be shut down here in just a month. >> we thought that we would be dealing with this about a year down the road. you know, to give us time to alert the public of the dangers. >> reporter: for some parents, this was a shock. >> i'm speechless right now to even think that there's going to be nothing, except in santa clara and all the way in oakland. and then if they are full, all the way to roseville. >> reporter: when the pediatrics department closes on november 17th, children who need to be admit willed be sent to kaiser in oakland. a spokesman says they are shutting down the pediatrics facility here to transition their whole medical team up to oakland so they can be trained together as a team and be ready for their new facility to open up next summer. kaiser promises a bigger, better children's department in oakland

with authorities to restore its chicken exports to mexico. as we first told you thursday night, the mexican government has banned foster farms chicken products from three central california processing plants where salmonella was detected a few weeks ago. there was never any recall on the products and foster farms has since cleaned up the plant and says it has put new procedures and processes in place companywide. in a statement yesterday, the company said its working to fully resolve any concerns and demonstrate the safety of our chicken products when properly handled and cooked. kraft is voluntarily recalling their string cheese. that over concerns the product may spoil before the expiration date. about 735,000 cases of the product were shipped across the u.s. they have the best when used by dates of october 25th through february 11th. customers should not eat the product and return it for an exchange or refund. a former methodist bishop from san francisco is about to defy his church and perform a gay wedding ceremony.

bishop melvin talbert plans to reside over a gay wedding. he'll be the most prominent clergy member to defy his church's ban on same sex marriage. he says his action will draw complaints and possibly divide his church, but he says his goal is to address what he calls hypocrisy in a denomination that includes gay pastors. complaints have come in for six others and he could be defrocked for performing the same sex wedding ceremony. every day thousands of tech workers board buses to head at companies in silicon valley. but lately something else is happening. silicon valley is creeping north towards san francisco. abc 7 news reporter onthain bloom has more on the trend. >> reporter: 11:00 in the morning techies and entrepreneurs are making their way up market street led by a

guy in an astronaut suit. no one seems to mind they are drinking beer in the middle of the workday as they walk right into this office and start making friends. despite the outfit, miles lifeletter worked for nasa. he runs sf new tech, the monthly gathering that's like speed-dating for start-ups. but this is the new tech crawl. >> it is much in the theme of a pub crawl. >> business development, all these areas are all working together here. >> reporter: making their way from one start-up to the next, these entrepreneurs are witnessing a trend. new companies that used to start in silicon valley are now sprouting up in san francisco. >> the number of companies funded in the peninsula is gradually going down and the number of start-ups funded in san francisco is gradually going up. >> reporter: it's so pronounced that after 30 years on silicon valley's sand hill road from sigma west, many moved to san francisco. >> more than half the deals in silicon valley, a larger silicon valley, are now done in san francisco. i mean, you could say in a way san francisco is really becoming

day in los gatos, 46 degrees. here's a look at san jose this morning, nice and sunny with reports of fog near mountain view. 38 in santa rosa. 39 in novato. and temperatures are cooler this morning in the east bay valley, especially in concord 4rks, 44 degrees. as much as 5 to 6 degrees cooler than this time yesterday in hayward and san jose and livermore. here's a look at the fog from our future tower. and the forecast highlights today, sunny and mild conditions with breezier conditions for the second half of the weekend. introducing a chance of showers on monday. it's a slim chance. i'll show you why in a moment. but we'll get back into dry and mild weather. the end of the upcoming workweek, of course, the end of the month is dry for trick-or-triters. the high pressure that brought the clouds continues to stay offshore. look for more sunshine today, but the next system will be heading down from the canadian

rockies. and as it does, the pressure gradient tightens up tonight. so the breezier winds are at the coast. that brings us a cooler sunday. look what happens monday. the counterclockwise flow around the low does paint some showers towards san francisco. the central coast, not only the chance for showers, but we're talking as much as ten degrees of cooling headed our way by monday. today, though, look for 76 in cupertino. beautiful day in morgan hill at 78. milpitas warms to 75 underneath mostly sunny skies. 72 in san mateo. millbrae checking in at 70. afternoon high temperatures, 3:00 san francisco, 70. 64 in daily city. and up in the north bay, we will get a few 80s today. so a few degrees warmer with those north winds allowing for the warm-up to 80. near east bay, 72 degrees in berkeley with 75 in fremont. you head inland and temperatures today will be on the warm side, 80 in pleasanton.

welcome back, everyone. we are just seconds away from 8:30 and want to start this half hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa armin. fog is creating a problem for the san francisco bridge. it is cool in the livermore valley at 48. but we are forecasting sunshine throughout the day today, even at the coast. so it may take some time, but we are looking for more sun with cool conditions in the 60s at the shoreline. around the bay, look for lower 70s and a couple degrees of warming today inland for upper 70s to near 80. it doesn't last through the second half of the weekend. and, in fact, maybe a little rain coming our way. we'll have a look at that coming up. thank you, lisa. new details this morning, bart managers fought for years to hang on to a controversy to make

workers more safe. despite warnings and signs from state regulators and unions following a 2008 fatality linked to the policy, bart stuck with it. this week the transit agency i definitely suspended that policy days after two workers were hit and killed by a train while inspecting the tracks in walnut creek. next month a hearing will be held on bart worker safety. meanwhile, the contract for bart workers should get a raise over the years and get more health coverage and will contribute to their pensions reaching 4.in the fourth year. if both unions approve the agreement, bart's board of directors will vote on it during the next regularly scheduled meeting on november 21st or at a special meeting before then. the project to replace doyle drive, the approach to the golden gate bridge, won't be finished for three more years, but the work is starting to take shape now.

it's a massive undertaking and a necessity for seismic safety. for an inside look you'll only see on abc 7 news, transportation editor heather ishimaru is here to take a look. >> the final landscaping, there's native soil they removed, they are stored on site to be reused when they cover the tunnels up and landscape them. >> reporter: engineers are concentrating on the twin main post tunnels right now hoping to get as much work done as possible before the rainy season. this is what will be the southbound tunnel adjacent to the main post. tunnel construction happens in distinct phases, first excavation followed by stabilization of the marshland soil. >> you actually take cement and make it into a grout, you inject grout into the soil and it mixes with the natural soil to give you this deep soil mix to stabilize the condition. >> reporter: then base rock is

laid down, concrete goes on top of that followed by waterproofing. the white sheets are waterproofing membranes. more steel rebar and concrete builds the road bed followed by rebar rising up as the first step in building tunnel walls. when done the tunnels will be covered up again with the native soils and landscapes providing an uninterrupted view and pedestrian access to the bay. >> this block will extend and you'll go over the roadway and then it will drop at gray so you can walk from the main point to kristy marsh. >> reporter: follow the bright light on this caltrans animation showing the transformation. as surface roads are replaced with tunnels, cars disappear underground. >> you cover the cars, you hide them, it's quieter, and then you have all this additional park land. >> reporter: at the other end close to the golden gate bridge, the piles and columns are going in for what will be another viaduct or bridge side by side to the new one already in use.

it, too, will connect into a tunnel. work on that tunnel is also underway. the completed new doyle drive is scheduled to open some time in 2016. heather ishimaru, abc 7 news. >> very cool to see. new this morning, parking in downtown walnut creek could soon cost double what it does now. our media partner in the "contra costa times" says a proposed plan would increase downtown meters from $1 to $2 an hour. rates also go up from 50 cents to $1 an hour in garages. the city is also considering charging for parking on sundays as well as extending meter hours by two hours. the council will take up the issue in december. parents know the term stem when it comes to education. it's an act co anymore for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. yesterday several businesses in a nonprofit created real life s.t.e.m. field trip. 200 students got to tour the tesla motors factory in fremont.

leah melendez was there. >> reporter: they are excited about discovering new things, anxious to learn and they are curious. >> the question is, how long does it take to make a car. >> reporter: so where are these kids and what are they doing? well, about 200 bay area students were lucky enough to get the first ever private tour of the tesla motors factory. comen. tesla opened its doors to demonstrate thou science, technology, engineering and math are used in our daily lives and how new inventions can change lives. but more importantly tesla and google paired up to show these kids many from underserved communities that they, too, can succeed in this field. a lot of times kids don't realize that, a, they can do these jobs, and b, that science and engineering, heroic engineering is one of the greatest jobs in the world. to make the world a better place through invention and

innovation. >> reporter: google brought a self-driving car. students learned how the car moves on the highway thanks to laser technology and an internal camera. >> it was really interesting to see that aspect of electric cars because i don't know much about electric cars, but it is interesting. >> i would definitely like to pursue a career of technology and everything. >> i think it was just amazing and cool to look at and see what you can do with your own two hands. >> reporter: a factory isn't the only s.t.e. more remitted place, the brother of tesla's ceo is about to introduce the kitchen community to northern california schools. it's a garden where teachers can have outdoor classes to teach science and math. >> if we can inspire ten of these kids out of 200 to have the same level of impact that people can have in the technology business, i think we've done our job. >> reporter: to top it all off, these studentses were invited to a private screening of the new sci-fi movie, to look at the

new this morning, the white house is promising the new federal health insurance website will be fixed, but says it will take several weeks. in his weekly address this morning, president obama offered a blunt admission about the problems with healthcare.gov. his administration says it hired a new troubleshooter to get the issues resolved. >> the site's been visited more than 20 million times so far. nearly 700,000 people have applied for coverage already. and that proves just how much demand there is for these new quality affordable health care choices. and that's why in the coming weeks we are going to get it working as smoothly as it's supposed to. we've got people working overtime 24/7 to boost capacity

a major effort is underway in the south bay to stop oriental fruit flies from breeding. they threaten the commercial crops as well as backyard gardens. and the discovery of two of them near cupertino and 85 has led to eradication in the neighborhood. david louis has the story. >> reporter: there's little time for the crews to waste. the oriental fruitfully means an infestation is likely. the plan of attack is bait boxes placed in trees and on utility poles. inside is a sticky substance with two active ingredients, an attractive thing that attracts males and a bait to kill them. they are high enough not to endanger the public. fast action is needed to break the breeding cycle. >> the female will lay her eggs in 230 different kinds of fruits and vegetables and will live for about three months and in that

lifetime she'll lay 1,000 eggs. so the maggots are the real problem that you can imagine going into your tomato garden and there's no tomatoes because they are infested with maggots. >> reporter: it is suspected someone brought in infested fruit from asia or the fruit was shipped in getting past agricultural inspectors. the target zone for bait boxes is a ten-mile square area of cupertino. residents can expect to see state agricultural trucks in the neighborhood for several weeks. >> they need to do that, yeah. >> reporter: you don't want them eating your tomatoes in your garden. >> i don't want them eating anything in my garden. >> reporter: the bait stations lose potency over time and need to be replaced every two weeks. the oriental fruitfully goes dor meant in cold temperatures but resumes in warmer temperatures. so this could extend into the new year. hundreds of bait boxes are being deployed to place one every 200 feet over the ten-square mile area. in cupertino, david louis, abc 7 news.

new this morning, the rents in san francisco are growing at a high rate of speed. average rent for units in the apartment complexes broke records in the third quarter topping $3,000 a month. that's up 21% from last year. oakland and san jose are also seeing steep increases. experts say the surge is being driven in part by an influx of well-paid tech workers. yep. i know all about it. i know all about it. uh-huh. 8:47. temperatures, fog -- >> temperatures are cool. we have some fog and we have some sun for you all in your saturday forecast. in fact, that changes as soon as tomorrow. where we will see the wind pick up, so we'll add that element, too. live doppler 7 hd is showing plainly clear conditions, but look closely and there's a built bit of fog along the san mateo coast. here's a look from the tan camera and it is laying pretty

low anywhere from around 500 to 700 feet in the span of the golden gate bridge. 50 in san francisco. 48 in san carlos. 47 in pacifica and half-moon bay. san jose, nice and sunny with temperatures here pretty comfortable, but it is cool up in the north bay. still in the 30s for santa rosa. 38 with 43 in novato. and temperatures responding in livermore at 48 degrees, but just 44 in concord. so there it is. the span is about 220 feet. and the towers sit at about 746 feet. so i would say about 600 feet right there at the marine layer. we'll look for that as they continue to burn back to the shoreline. and temperatures today will be on the mild side. warm if you're inland. tomorrow we're looking at increasing winds throughout the day. so it won't be as warm at the coast. then a chance for showers for your monday. temperatures as much as 10 degrees cooler. dry for halloween on thursday. and if we do see any rain at

all, we're going to look for light amounts of rain. but this system, not the rainmaker, it sits offshore and brought higher clouds that will continue to sink to the south. so there's high clouds in southern california. next system coming in to play late tonight will increase the pressure gradient. the wind in the bay area. and as it flies down from the canadian rockies, we have cold air associated with it. so looking at snow levels of 5,000 feet in the sierra nevada with some rain and snow there. and it will continue to press southward bringing snow to mammoth and possibility of showers here locally. so it is going to be kind of a raw day out there on monday. enjoy today where temperatures still will be plenty warm from sacramento, chico, low 80s. 84 in fresno into the low 80s in southern california. so we will be in the 60s today from half-moon bay, san francisco, 68. a couple degrees warmer over in the east bay. 75 in fremont. but 80 by the delta. so these numbers will be slightly warmer, but don't get

used to it. tomorrow afternoon, still looks nice for the raiders with temperatures in the low to mid-60s. and the accuweather forecast, today the warmest out of the next seven with 70s and 80s near the bay, 60s at the coast. tomorrow cooler, but still sunshine. as much as five degrees cooler. and by monday, boy, lots of cooling with a slight chance of showers. not much to recover on tuesday, we'll have to wait until the end of the month, but very little rain in the extended outlook. looking dryer and mild. >> i'm not looking past the end of the week. we have to get to halloween. thank you, lisa. in sports, all three bay area football teams back in action. at 4:00 san jose state hosts wyoming at spartan stadium. oregon state is at 7:30 on our sister network at espn. and at 8:00 p.m., cal plays washington at husky stadium. meanwhile, the warriors have one less worry before wednesday night's season opener against the lakers. here's abc 7 news supporter

director larry beale with this morning's sports. >> good morning. when steph curry's ankle was still questionable, the warriors signed him to a long-term extension. it paid off big because now he's a budding superstar in the nba. golden state has taken the exact approach with andrew bogen. he gets a three-year $36 million extension a few days before the start of a new season. could be worth up to $42 million with incentives. bogen has been plagued we elbow, ankle and back injuries since he was acquired for monte ellis. but we saw a glimmer of what he can do when he's healthy. late last year, that was, but now the warriors are banking on going forward. they are looking at the decision to lock up bogen entering the last year of his contract. >> this was an asset we didn't want to lose. so if it meant betting on that player, we were willing to do that. >> i can probably get more, but

i think we came to an agreement that was fair for both parties. i mean, numberswise, i feel like i'm a leader defensively on this team. that's my main role. >> and he's in great shape heading into the new season. it's more of a business trip than a tourist vacation, but the niners will meet jackson tomorrow at wimbley stadium. they practiced yesterday at a rugby stadium. for a moment, we saw the lighter side of coach jim harbough who ran down the sightseeing spots they were visiting in london. >> to marble arch, park lane, high park corner, buckingham palace, and the square. do you think we're hitting the right spots? >> i think he got them. stafford will be without their
