live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> an island in the philippines slammed by the strongest tropical super typhoon in history. good morning, i am eric thomas leader for kristen sze. the super typhoon haiyan moved through so quickly the country was spared from worst destruction. katie marzullo joins us from the newsroom with the latest. >> that is the good news. the bad news is the storm did slam into the central philippines killing at least four people and forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. >> dramatic new video from the

central philippines, people thrown from barges into rough seas left floating up-and-down in life bets and pulled to safety. there is danger on shore with massive waves crash on to island homes. 750,000 people forced to evacuate neighborhoods. some have returned to comb through the debris of splintered structures. they the lucky ones. officials say two people were could be much higher because the energy systems are down. the past the philippines is optimistic. >> as always, no storm can bring a unite the filipino people to its knees. >> typhoon haiyan is 300 miles wide but forecasters say this storm could have been much worse. >> it has been a fast mover storm. that has spared the islands

devastated the area. it stays south of ma nilly -- manila. it will weakened to a category four and dropping do a category three headed to vietnam and da nang. you can see the coast of vietnam. when it hits tomorrow at 6:00 our time it will make the curve to the north and pound northern vietnam, laos, and that area with flooding rains. we could see more flooding here than in the philippines because the storm will hang around longer. eric and cheryl? >> two people are hospitalized with minor injuries after the car they were in collided with a light rail in san jose. the accident happened at 9:00 a.m. >> the passengers were not injured. the cause of the accident is under investigation. >> c.v.s. admitted they made a

>> the high patrol is investigating an accident that killed a 26-year-old man walking on the freeway this morning. it maked at 5:00 a.m. in the northbound 280 connection at 87 southbound. two cars hit the man. he died at the scene. they are trying to determine why the man was on the freeway. 9 accident closed the road for two hours. >> students, teachers and the administration at berkeley high school are making a wardrobe change today to show support for a classmate who was set on fire on an a.c. transit bus. abc7 news reporter, amy hollyfield, is at the high school with more on the story. amy? >> that student doesn't identify as male or female so students here say they, when referred to s ash a, rather than he or she. he would often wear skirts to students, here, today, decided to make a statement of their own the students at the high school in berkeley walked into class wearing skirts, both female and

male. the school director said he could not be prouder the he put on a skirt, too. it is great to see students rally in support of another student especially in this case, given the horrific event. they are supporting the senior who goes by the name of s ash a who was set on fire on monday while sleeping on a bus in oakland. the 18-year-old victim was wearing a skirt at the time and it was the skirt that was society on fire. >> everyone is very upset, of course. the closest friends are extremely upset and it is obviously something we have never had to deal with before. it is bizarre. >> they decided to make a statement today and encourage the 110 students at the high school in berkeley to wear skirts. one mother says her mother was among them. she did wear a skirt and i am proud of her and the other kids for showing their support to the

victim. we hope the return is quick >> the senior is now in the hospital recovering from second- and third-degree burns. >> i got an e-mail great the mother saying we are thrilled that everyone will wear skirts in support of my child. >> during lunch, students will come to the plaza and take a group picture in the skirts and send it along with a get well card. police have made an arrest in this case. they have arrested add 16-year-old boy and decided to charge him as an adult. >> happening now, a number of families are going through hard times and are signing up to qualify for tree holiday meals. thousands people in san jose camped out overnight waiting for 9 doors to open at the sacred heart community service center.

abc7 news reporter joining us with more. matt? >> the word of the day today is hope. the hope for the people waiting here if line looking for a little bit of help over the holidays and hope that the community is going to step up and donate enough to fill the need. people started standing in line here at sacred heart community have in san jose at 3:00 yesterday afternoon. the register for the holiday food boxes is toys for christmas and people came overnight stretching down the lock and around the corner. the daylight gave a better view of the line as the need for help over the holiday became obvious. >> i don't make enough to support thanksgiving and i want my family to have the best food i can so i am out here every year. >> once inside, more than 150 volunteers were busy registering clients. they get a purple ticket with a time to pick up food and toys before thanksgiving and christmas. a record number of food boxes, about 7,500, were given away

last year and more than 5,600 kids received i christmas toys. this year improving job market in san jose is overwhelmed by skyrocketing rents so there will be another busy holiday season. >> that is the tragedy. they are having to choose between essentials. a reason we give out food we never want people to choose to not feed their children or to stretch things too far. >> the charity has a frozen turkey in the freeze inner and over two weeks to take donation before they hand out the food boxes. organizers are looking to the community to provide enough food and toys to make the holiday special for thousands. >> we sing praises to sacred heart and others that donate to the community. it helps me so much to have something that is a tradition over the years for thanksgiving dinner. >> if you would like to help you can go to our website at abc7news.com and click on the

weather. we need the rain. we are not going to get much. it is turns dry. good morning, everyone, here is the radar and satellite. we are seeing that it is clear as we head over to tahoe which will not get much snow. our visibility is up considerably and we have an hour and a half flight arrival delay into sfo with the thickest fog is at the approach of sfo. you can see what the fog did and has done and has made it cooler, in the mid-to-upper 50's, and in mountain view and inland, we are nearing 70 inantback and 68 in novato and half moon bay. here is a look from emeryville at the fog still hanging around the bay waters.

the fog is lingering a little longer in that area. sunshine this afternoon and seasonal highs this weekend and although it will be cooler and the chance of rain will come in on tuesday but it is not a good chance whatever. this is how it looks in san jose, quite a difference from a couple of hours ago when you were socked in with fog with temperatures three to eight degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. low-to-mid 70's in milpitas and santa cruz at 68 degrees. we will have upper 60's to near 70 on the peninsula and mountain view at 70 and mid-60's along the coast and downtown san francisco and south san francisco and sausalito. along the coastal communities low-to-mid 60's. east bay shore, 60's, and fremont around 70 to 71 and the warmest is low-to-mid 70's east bay valleys and no fog to speak
