>> good saturday morning, everyone. i'm katie marzullo. let's start with a quick first look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. the temperature dewpoint spread is a little bit further apart this morning. that's why we aren't seeing the fog. anywhere from two it six degrees apart. that means the skies are clear, the winds are calm and temperatures have been chilly, down to 35 in santa rosa earlier. but throughout the next couple of hours we will see the coolest inland numbers climb into the low 40s. it's been in the low 50s around the bay and inland we are still in the mid-40s. but by noontime we will see more 60s coast, close to it. by the afternoon, once again, temperatures upper 60s around the bay. san francisco should be about 67

today. low 70s inland. a clear night tonight but we are looking at more fog and a few clouds, anticipating maybe a little rain by late on veteran's day. i'll have more with that in the accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. katie. >> lisa, thank you. we are sticking with weather as we continue to follow developing news out of southeast asia. at least 1200 people in the philippines are believed to be dead, killed in the super typhoon that is moving across the region. take a look at this new video just into the newsroom within the last few minutes. forecasters are calling this one of the most powerful storms to ever hit land. among the worst-hit spots are popular tourist destinations for americans. we will have more on the story throughout this hour. we also want to take a look at this. new images of the massive storm taken by a n.a.s.a. satellite today. experts think it will take days goat the full scope of the damage done. red cross said they will have

emergency crews. the cause of the accident is still under investigation at this hour. police have aannounced arrests in connection with the robbery of a middle school student in antioch. now the victim's mother is speaking out, saying the crime could have been prevented. alan wang has the latest from antioch. >> i was like, oh, my god. >> this woman's son is a student at block diamond middle school and even though two deer valley high school students have been arrested for robbing her son with a gun, she's still afraid to reveal her family's identity, especially her son he is a. >> he said this time he showed me his gun. i could hear his voice crack so i knew she was upset. five high school students surround her son at that bus stop in antioch. >> then he said give he all your money and he pulled up his shirt and showed him the gun. the mother said the boy who had the gun threaten to kill her son

two weeks ago. she was upset they were still in school two days after the boy was robbed. >> they should have immediately sent out an alert to the parents. what ifs another colorado shooting? went what? >> no victims have been notified. school district will only say they are working closely with police. in antioch, abc7 news. >> happening today," there will be demonstrations throughout the bay area and beyond to protest the shooting death of a 13-year-old santa rosa boy by a sheriff's deputy. andy lopez was shot and killed october 22nd while holding a toy ak-47. his family has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the sheriff's department and the deputy. today's demonstrations begin at 1:00 in oakland, san francisco and santa rosa and there will also be demonstrations in los angeles and sacramento. another demonstrations is planned for today to protest remarks made on the late night

show. >> hello, good saturday morning, >> a pit balance. our immediate way partner said it happened at carolyn tyler 5030 p.m.. police were responding to a domestic abuse. they say as they tried to make an arrest, the dog charged them. an officer fired. no one else was hurt. >> a search is on for a man who stole a pom rainian dog at gunpoint during a carjacking. a person met him at happy hollow zoo on october 8th. the victims were trying to sell the nine-year-old puppy to a man and he was holding the dog when

he pulled out a gun and demanded their car. they feared for their lives, left the puppy and drove off. >> a strong show of support for a teenage who are was set on fire monday. they recognize luke. yesterday at the high school his fellow students wore skirts, kilts and in honor of the burned teen. he was set on fire while wearing a skirt on aa. c. transit bus. he does not identify as male or female, which led to the hate crime investigation. the parents are supportive. >> they are very supportive of sasha. and we can't wait until asia -- sasha gets back to us. >> a neighbor shared video he

took on his cell phone monday with abc7 news. it shows the emergency response. suspect, 16-year-old richard thomas, will be tried as an adult and he faces hate crime charges. >> a magnitude 3.2 earthquake hit the east bay last night just after 10:00. it was centered about a mile east of san ramon. lots of east bay viewers sent us tweets saying they felt the quake. no reports of damage, though. >> crews are finally getting the upper hand on a fire burning in lake county. flames have destroyed an outout-building and burned acres and it continues to threat structures in the area. it is now 30% contained. the fire broke out just before 2:00 p.m. yesterday. it's burning east of highway 29 near the town of lower lake. it has been very dry out there. sounds like that's still mostly the case maybe? >> saw a little bit of green on one of my maps. but despite the chilly start, we are already in the low to

>> thanks for being with us this morning. we want to get back to a developing news story out of southeast asia. abc's ginger has the latest on the massive and deadly typhoon haiyan. >> moments of rescue. the central philippines wading through after being washed away. washed out. >> the building, the house, everything. >> the red cross estimating 1200 dead. part of the island devastated by what will likely go down as the most powerful typhoon in recorded history to make landfall. it was a wild 195-mile-per-hour winds, the waives and surge climbing over 20 feet. watch this guy just barely outrunning it. norm sharif, an american who was trapped in a hotel, was forced to ride it out. >> had to watch out for flying debris. the tin roofs slide off and they

are like projectiles. the winds got to the point where you had to brace yourself. it was blowing you around. >> as the compact typhoon screams toward vietnam, our gloria is on the ground behind it in the philippines. >> they will be loading things like this. tents, blankets, food, water. this is the only kind of aircraft that can get to where it needs to go. >> with power and communication out for millions, there is so much left to learn about exactly what has happened behind haiyan. >> how are the people? >> the people, they are all outside. >> where are the people? are they just in the street? >> they are all in the streets. i can -- >> that was ginger reporting. new this morning, hawaii is one step closer to legalizing same-sex marriage.

the state house of representatives passed the marriage equality act late yesterday. amendments were added to protect clergy and servicers who choose not to provide wedding goods or services to same-sex couples. it is headed to the senate where it is expected to pass and if approved it will go into effect early next month. >> new this morning, something for parents. an emeryville company is volley recalling some of its baby food products. plum organic is recalling pouch products in it's baby stage 2 top mish-mash and kids lines. the company said a manufacturing defect may cause spoiling of the product and cause the package to swell. the recalled products have best buy dates ranging from august 5 to december 8 of 2014. for more information, including the specific lot numbers, go to our website, abc7news.com and once you are there click on "see it on tv." the explosion of mobile device and tablet computers is impacting the lives of a

generation of children. also possibly taking a follow on possibly taking a toll on their eyesight. experts at u.c. berkeley are concerned enough they have opened a special center to tackle the problem. we have the details. >> like her classmates, she likes to play games on her i-phone. >> almost everybody who has a smartphone has games on it. >> coupled with her love of reading, she spends a significant amount of time in front of printed pages and small screens. it's a trend that university researcher christine wilson now believes is taking a toll on an eyesight of a generation, leading to an epidemic of the condition known as myopia, or near sightedness. >> with the students in my lab right now, there are very few non-myopia students. >> i'm going to test your vision. >> in fact, she's already been diagnosed with myopia. the problem is so prevalent the university of california has opened a dedicated myopia. control clinic at the university school of open tom try. one of the goals is to spot and

treat near sightedness in the young patients. >> usually if we find early on set, anyone starting developing it before age 10. >> she said young patients are particularly vulnerable because their eyes are still developing. in her case dr. liu is using a corrective device lens. it's called an orthocoratology lens. it's a contact lens worn by patients while sleeping to flatten the center of the corn yeah and reduce myopia. >> they have clear vision from the molding effect of the lenses and at the same time they benefit from the myopia design as well. >> she said she's lenses and other new technologies that slow the progression significantly but the problem is still growing. one study found it is twice as prevalent among young adults compared to the elderly. doctors at the berkeley clinic also counsel families about the

need to break up sessions spent with electronic devices and even books. >> usually the rule of thumb for a reading distance would be an hour reading requires ten minute break. >> it's advice the family is already taking to heart. they have already instituted a system to ration the overall-time their kids spend on smartphones and computer screens. >> we try to give it as añi reward. a limited time. >> carolyn johnson, abc7 news. >> a bright meteor lit up the bay area sky last night. take a look. bay area news group photographer ray chavez snapped these pictures from san lorenzo. it's the third night in a row large meteors were spotted. right now we are in the middle of a meteor shower. it piqued last month but can produce stung shooting stars

like this. a satellite the size of a volkswagen van is on its way back down-to-earth and is expected to crash land sometime soon. we have the story. >> the european space agency go chase satellite was launched in 2009 to chart the earth's gravitational field but it ran out of fuel. it will come crashing back back down to earth the next few days. >> when they run out of fuel ask can no longer give themselves periodic kicks to stay in orbit of, they begin to slowly drop. >> jeff is a senior astronomer at the study institute in mountain view. he and his colleagues research life in the universe. they said the go chase satellite will continue to drop until it plunges into the earth's atmosphere. pieces of the satellite will begin to burn up and essentially become astroids, but a couple hundred pounds will land back on earth. he said it isn't likely anybody will be struck by a piece of the satellite. >> most of the earth is covered by water so chances are it will land in the water.

tom is one of many residents visiting the observe story on this friday night. his assumption is spot on. >> the chances are no one will see, it it will land in the ocean and nobody will notice except a few fish. >> the european space agency said the satellite should re-enter the atmosphere sunday or early monday. a n.a.s.a. scientist will get $72 million for his work designing toy guns. the engineer lonny johnson filed a lawsuit earlier this year against a toy company. they said the toy company didn't give him proper royalties for his super soaker and toy designs. sales of the super soaker alone have topped $1 billion. he also worked on n.a.s.a. missions to jupiter and mars. a lost range there.

>> the poplar sandcastle competition at ocean beach will get underway in a few hours now. this is a youtube video of last years' competition. local architects and construction workers will join more than 20 local elementary schools. this year's theme is masterpieces in sand. more than half the money from the contest goes toward l.e.a.p. a youth advocacy organization. i have only seen them on tv. it gets started at 10:30. unbelievable. and unbelievable beach day to the. >> it is. there will be surfers out there for sure liking the offshore flow. looking at just a little bit of cloud cover offshore but not harming anyone. we are looking at a mainly sunny sky, 7-mile visibility in santa rosa. it can be much worse than that, but overall the temperature dewpoints spread has allowed for the clear sky. you see some of the wind above 2,000 feet. mt. tam. it's still chilly in the north bay but san francisco at 51 degrees. redwood city, 43 degrees for

you. 48 half moon bay. 10 degrees cooler a couple hours ago. from the sutro tower look at all the clear skies in the gold gate bridge. still in the 30s. 45. delta 39. offshore winds and higher elevations. mt. diablo. we are already at 50 trees in livermore. the view from san jose. a beautiful, sunny start to your saturday. the dense patches of fog have lifted. we have seen those up in the north bay from novato to napa. we are underway for a sunny and mild afternoon today. the mildest we will see over the weekend. some cooling tomorrow due to stronger on shore push and a weak weather system will influence us just a little bit on monday. so here is the latest on the typhoon as it heads toward vietnam. now yesterday as it made landfall, packing winds of over 170 miles an hour. strongest it gets is a category five. now it's at about category three of winds of 120 miles an hour and it will quickly continue to

weaken as it pushes up to the north and east. so that is the good news. but already tons and tons of damage for parts of the philippines and vietnam. but we are the opposite problem here with no rain at all. high pressure. it's firmly in control. warmest day of the weekend will be today. we have the 70s with us. and this area of low pressure that wants to bring some cooler weather and the rain will continue to drop to the south. it will form a cutoff low and as it does that, it will bring back some fog for us tomorrow. that will bring the temperatures down a little bit. sunday afternoon still plenty of sunshine. monday afternoon notice more clouds around and throughout the late day, the overnight hours, here is what this forecast model is forecasting. so we go through a couple of forecast models to fine-tune what we think is going to happen. and one of them does show rain in the north bay 5:00 tuesday morning from marin county to sonoma county. we are keeping the chance in. low 70s today in san jose. that will return for another

it's been in space before. it went up on the space shuttle atlantis in '96 but this is the first time it's gone outside of a spacecraft. it went up on thursday and it will come back down on monday with a three-man crew. of course, it's not lit. it will not be lit. it that is not possible and not safe. neat to see. pope francis is showing off his silly side this week. he put on a red nose and shared a laugh with the newlyweds at the vatican. they volunteered for a charity that uses clown therapy to help sick children. the pope is rapidly becoming known for his informal manner. he also has his own twitter account. some halloween is long over, but some halloween leftovers are going to good use in oakland. animals at the oakland zoo are getting some sweet treats thanks to thousands of leftover pumpkins. truckloads of donations from local pumpkin patches are arriving this week. they are not just for eating. pumpkins are also being used as food containers for the animals,

>> welcome back, everyone. it's 8:30 and we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. none of that fog this morning. temperatures are pretty mild in san francisco. our sutro camera, we looking at a beautiful start to the weekend if you like it dry and sunny. 39 in santa rosa. cool in the north bay. so from one great city to another we will take you to san jose where it is sunny right now. yesterday we saw a high of 69. today going a little warmer for the low 70s today in san jose. plenty of sunshine at the coast. mid-60s for you. around the bay we are talking about temperatures near 70 in oakland this afternoon. so some changes for the long holiday weekend that include a slight chance of showers. i'll have that for you with the accuweather seven-day forecast

coming up. katie. >> lisa, thank you. developing news. typhoon haiyan has killed at least 1200 people. we have new video for you after the typhoon swept through the philippines. power in a large portion of the country has been knocked out. the massive storm, which was equivalent to a category 5 when it hit in the philippines, is now headed toward vietnam. we have more on how the way area filipino community is dealing with the deadly storm. >> images. the typhoon were fight frightening orestter. she's been keeping in touch with her family there. >> i'm chatting with her through facebook. >> the storm didn't do much damage to her family's community. highian was powerful and blew through quickly. >> they said the storm traveled like a bam bore gene any or something like that.

new this morning, president obama is commemorating veteran's day weekend by thanking the men and women who have worn this country's uniform. in his weekly address he said he's proud of veterans and he feels america's gratitude should extend beyond saying thank you. >> president obama: i often said my top priority is growing the economy, creating jobs and restoring middle class security. and a very important part of that is making sure every veteran has every chance to share in the opportunity that he or she has helped defend. in addition to the care and benefits they have earned, including good mental healthcare to stay strong, that means a good job, a good education, and a home to call their own. the president says he will do everything possible to ensure veterans sacrifices will always be honored. happening today, former secretary of state hillary clinton will be in the bay area she will give a speech at san francisco's mascone center for the national association of realtors conference.

her supporters will be outside urging her to run in the 2016 presidential election. later this evening she will hold a fundraiser with daughter chelsea clinton at the regional ballroom to benefit the clinton foundation. new details about the mysterious google barge that stopped at treasure island. documents reveal when it's done it will feature giant sails and move from port to port. abc7 news reporter lilian kim has the story from treasure island. >> reporter: the artist's renderings don't seem to disappoint. people we talk to are giving the google barge a thumbs-up. it will give a new look to the bay. >> documents said when it is done the barge will be an unprecedented artistic structure flanked by sails that look like fish fins. the 50-foot tall, 250-foot long floating studio will be moored at various spots in the bay for a month at a time to be used as an interactive space where people can learn about google products. >> it's a showcase. a floating museum for google it -- high-tech stuff.

what better way to get attention. >> it includes several san francisco piers. angel island, redwood city and rosie national park in richmond. it may also travel to other west coast ports. but when exactly is anyone's guess. they say google hasn't applied for permits yet and work at treasure island appears to be at a standstill. and then the question if they build it, will they come? >> it looks interesting. it's probably enough for me to decide to walk down here more often. >> usually when i'm on this path i'm exercising and that's my focus. i'm not trying to stop and relax or anything like that. >> despite what some people may think about it now, they promise it will be a unique addition to the water front. on treasure island, lilian kim, abc7 news. caltran is expect to begin the demolition of the old eastern span of the bay bridge on tuesday. crews will begin by removing 1400 feet of the upper deck cantilever section.

that will begin next week. that will take about six weeks. next year crews will take down the steel and that involves cutting the cantilever section in half. it will take three years and cost $240 million. >> a church in san leandro digging deep of a thieves stole the mood donated for thanksgiving. members of the church are reaching into their pockets once again. they had already donated enough money to feed 60 to 100 needy families this thanksgiving. last week someone cut a lock and a chain on the building and made off with majority of food. the good thing is we announced to our congregation that it has been stolen and they have really bounced back to support the families and started donating even more than before, which is a if if thing to see everyone rally together. >> church leaders say they aren't looking for anyone to be arrested or brought to justice. they just want to feed the needy this thanksgiving. the need for help is greater

greenpeace's greenest ship is on display in san francisco. the rainbow warrior is the first large boat built just for greenpeace. they will use it for scientific excursions and for confront be environmental offenders. they often put themselves at risk on these missions. yesterday they had video of people taken as prisoners being held for piracy. >> we need to put our liberty on the line sometimes and make a stand for what we are doing. i certainly don't want to go to prison, but i feel like we have to do what we can to make people listen. the rainbow warrior is carrying banners supporting the arctic 30. that's what they are being called. the ship will be open to the public this weekend. check it out. it's docked at san francisco's pier 15 next to the exploratorium. and not a bad day to explore. all clear.

be scaled back a little bit. we will be looking at temperatures today, you know, as mild as yesterday. starting out clear and take a look from mt. tam. you see a little bit of wind here. that is allowing for the chilly numbers and the offshore flow in parts of our east bay valleys this morning. 51 downtown. the warmest location. 49 in oakland. 49 los gatos. half moon bay 52 already with the offshore flow. surfers liking that. a fun day out there and also the sandcastle contest. sutro tower this morning, it's clear. the fog day after day but the dewpoint spread is far enough part that low fog and clouds did not make it this morning. 45 napa, 45 by the delta with 350 already in livermore. -- 50 already in livermore. the fog is gone. a few high clouds. a sunny and mild afternoon with temperatures coming down with the southerly surge. almost like a summertime pattern tomorrow and we will cool further monday. that's what the chance of rain late monday comes our way.

but for now it's double barrel high pressure. the huge ridge allowing for the storm track to stay well north and much of the western third of the nation dry and mild. but let me take you through the next couple of days. the second half of the weekend. so we are starting out tonight and you will notice that the fog is along the coast. that will allow for a little bit of cooling tomorrow but still enough sunshine for a nice afternoon. look what happens monday. we have more mid-level clouds headed our way. by the overnight hours on tuesday, look at that. sonoma county, marin county, the band of rain 5:00 tuesday morning. the big question is how far south does it make it? does it hold together? and how much rain? we are thinking that just north of the golden gate we will see some showers. about a tenth of an inch. but we will watch it because that could change. high temperatures today after some 20s in the northern sierra, 60 later on this afternoon. 73 in los angeles. plenty of dense fog this morning out toward san diego.

they have some problems down there. but back home we are looking at a beautiful day and more sunshine and mild temperatures. 72 in fremont, as well as san jose. so bone dry, as you know, but today it's just going to be a repeat performance. 70 in richmond with 69 in san mateo. and tomorrow for the niners it looks like another mild afternoon. so along the coast it will be cooler, but here at candlestick, still the mid-and upper 70s. a mild day. the accuweather seven-day forecast slightly cooler coastside tomorrow, increasing clouds veteran's day. the rain holds off late monday into tuesday. slight chance maybe north of the golden gate. wednesday, thursday, friday, a stronger ridge and offshore flow, and that means just more dry weather. >> oh, boy. thanks, lisa. in sports, cal and san jose state both at home tonight.

sjsu faces san diego state at spartan stadium at 7:30. tonight the warriors close out their four-game road trip in memphis following last night's tight game in san antonio. we have the story in sports. >> good morning, everybody. the warriors rested steph curry last night in san antonio. he's ailing with a bone bruise on his left ankle. probably cost them the game because this was an ugly defensive grind. curry merely a spectator in a rematch of last year's playoff series. in the second round. warriors trailing the entire way. nice ball movement here. shot only 41 percent from the field. tony parker led the spurs. and the drive. the other tony kept golden state in the game. tony douglas. that should have been a four point play there. he led everyone with 21 points. spurs were up by as pane as 12. vintage parker, can't go left and hit the jump shot. he will knock it down every time. warriors with a chance tie. down 2. final seconds, andre, and it rolls off. 76-74, spurs, and warriors are in memphis tonight. we will see if steph goes.
