now at 5:00, moments of impact. new video of the supertyphoon. where it is now and the troubles to deal with the storm's aftermath. >> a helping hand. the bay area playing a role in recovery efforts after typhoon haiyan. >> details on a major recall of ready-made salads. abc7 news at 5:00 starts right now. the breaking news is on the peninsula where a shelter in place way, in effect for residents in a redwood city neighborhood because of a fire burning at a metal recycling plant nearby. that fire is putting up a lot of smoke in the air, and the smoke has been spreading across a wide part of the peninsula.

it was reported at the simms metal management plant, near the port of redwood city. a pile of scrap metal caught fire and is creating all the smoke. the city is asking neighbors living nearby to stay indoors and keep doors and windows shut. hospitals have been notified. and rods near the recycling center are closed. the smoke is blowing in a southwesterly direction. officials say the fire is in the process of being extinguished but may take four hours to do. so we'll have a reporter live at 6:00. >> happening now. several people leaving the 49ers game this evening are reporting thick smoke near candlestick. you can see it here from our sutro tower cam, a photo from the fire burning northeast of the parking lot. officials say there are no injuries or evacuations and theyable and to have the fire

under control soon. >> now, to the latest developments as the philippines struggles to recover from typhoon haiyan. some relief flights are making their way in and out of the airport, the first city hit by the typhoon. the mayor says it's possible that up to 10,000 people died in the storm. the storm surge created a 20-foot wall of water and some areas still have not been reached because they're cut off by flooding and landslides. >> we want to show you some new video in tonight that shows the ferocity of the few -- typhoon. the moment it hit land. take a look. >> windows didn't stand a chance. those winds so powerful, smashing windows, ripping off portions of the building's roof. these images were captured

friday as haiyan battered a hotel. some residents stood in prayer as the storm roared through. here's the latest. reporter: wind, water; and weeping. all the cruel calling cards of supertyphoon haiyan. winds driving rain up to 159 miles-per-hour, left behind wastelands. ace hundreds are known dead with the toll likely to soar into the thousands. >> we just made a mass grave for 57 people who died, says the mayor of this town. that number is going do increase. the storm made this chapel a morgue. relatives looking for lost loved ones pray not to find them here. giant waves wash this huge ship ashore, and storm surges as high as 20 feet are feared to have swept many victims out to sea. others believed lost under

mounds of debris. soldiers desperately search for life beneath this block of cement. for some it was too late. hundreds of thousands are going to relief centers, desperate for necessities. >> we need food, clothes, weather says this man. it should be given towels immediately. 90 u.s. marines arrived from japan with supplies for victims of the storm and to help in search and rescue efforts. with so much of the philippines still flooded and electricity and communication cut and so many roads choked off by debris, the sufferings of millions of storm victims are just beginning. abc news. >> the philippine national red cross says relief efforts are being hampered by looters. the president is now considering declaring a state of emergency or martial law. a steady stream of typhoon victims are arriving at the airport looking for food, water, and escape. they're begging for more help.
