we begin with the early season arctic blast that's now gripping a large part of the country right now. >> that's right. a deep freeze that will reach as far south as dallas, texas, and birmingham, alabama, could see below freezing temps by tonight. snow is on the ground from north dakota to pennsylvania. this video just in from eerie, pennsylvania. you see a good coating on the ground there already. this arctic front is bringing with it the coldest air of the fall. roads are covered with ice and snow. and around the great lakes this morning from pennsylvania to western new york. the arctic blast is dumping lake-effect snow on a wide region. this first snowfall is a harsh reminder, it's time to prepare. >> just a little bit of snow like this gets people thinking. and we sold quite a bit of salt here. and snow shelves. >> reporter: allen is shifting gears now, from lawn care to snow removal, after hearing predictions of several inches. >> we have to make sure we have

our clients lined up. trucks hooked up. all of the plows hooked up. make everything right. >> reporter: in lexington, kentucky, where the roads are still bone-dry even with no snow predictions yet, road crews are pretreating bridges and overpasses. >> we do this time of year every year. just to get our people back into the routine of knowing what their equipment is doing and how to use it. >> reporter: even as far south as north carolina where there are frost warnings so many people are ordering wood for their fireplaces. some companies can barely keep up with the demand. employees are working ten-hour days. >> i got splitting on the splitter. the boss is out pulling more trees right now. and it seems to be a high demand. i guess everybody thinks we're going to have a really bad winter. >> and they may be in need of firewood all the way down to the gulf of mexico by tonight. >> meteorologist jim dickey joins us now with what we can expect. good morning, jim. >> good morning, rob and diana. an arctic air mass continues to surge into the north and east as we had through the early morning hours.

temperatures falling as a result. we're seeing light snow, as well. near the lakes here, we get lake enhancement. and you can see heavier accumulations. as far as temperatures are concerned, cold this morning across the northern plains of the midwest. falling to 3 in bismarck. 11 in minneapolis. 10 in pierre. and cold in the northeast. many spots down into the 20s. rob and diana, back to you. >> thanks, jim. aun and our other major story we're following this morning is breaking news from the philippines. a part of the country outside of the storm zone has been hit by a 4.8 earthquake. >> as if they needed anything else. right? no tsunami warning was issued. and it does not appear to be major damage. a different story from the storm zone, as we learn new details of the unfolding humanitarian crisis there. survivors have been describing what it's like. >> tahman bradley has been tracking events overnight. >> reporter: across the

philippines, the frantic effort to find and care for survivors of typhoon haiyan continues. the air base has become a staging area. more than 500,000 people are displaced, living in rubble, desperately in need of food, water and medical care. >> we're so very hungry and thirsty. that's why we're here. >> reporter: the death toll, staggering. fears it could reach 10,000. >> truck loads of dead bodies. like, hundreds. >> reporter: a massive international relief effort is under way. the u.s. has pledged $20 million in immediate aid and is sending the carrier "the uss george washington." u.s. marines are already on the ground. typhoon haiyan may be the strongest ever recorded. it shows the monster storm smacking the coastline. pushing water inland, obliterating everything in its path. in the u.s., americans with loved ones in the philippines,

like jeannette branscom of virginia, anxiously await word. >> it's hard. no sleep. you know, just sitting around, waiting. hoping that i would hear something. >> reporter: in los angeles overnight, california families welcomed home storm survivors back to the u.s. >> i was scared. i thought, i'm not coming back. >> i appreciate family that's still over there. and the ones we have here. that's really all we have. >> it's good. i miss them so much. >> reporter: back in the philippines, just when it seemed things couldn't get any worse, a new, far weaker tropical storm made landfall. and word this morning of a small earthquake. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. and back here, now. a north carolina man has been charged with attempting to help an al qaeda-linked group in syria. basit sheikh is alleged to have posted messages on facebook and communicated with an fbi informant about his plans to join a group the u.s. considers terrorists. now, he was arrested at the airport just before leaving for the region. in other news this morning, the son of oklahoma senator jim inhofe has been killed in a plane crash.

dr. perry inhofe, an orthopedic surgery was piloting the aircraft. that plane did crash in a wooded area over the weekend near tulsa. investigators have not determined the cause just yet. senator inhofe is an avid pilot who taught his son to fly more than three decades ago. toronto city council is expected to vote on a motion this week calling for mayor rob ford to step aside. but ford remains defiant. he told reporters, let's get it on when asked about the motion. ford has acknowledged that he smoked crack, saying he did it while in a drunken stupor. the city council has no way to force the mayor out unless he's convicted of a crime. the white house will release enrollment figures from the online health care marketplace this weekend. as you can imagine, it is not looking good. one analysis finds that fewer than 50,000 people have signed up to date. the administration had expected 500,000, ten-times that number, just in october alone. and those 50,000 new customers are just 3% of the 7 million expected to enroll by the end of

next year. and now, we turn to a stunning revelation from one of our own here at abc news. one of our correspondents, amy robach, has announced that she is battling breast cancer. >> amy was diagnosed after getting a mammogram live on "good morning america" just six weeks ago. she did the test on the air for breast cancer awareness month. at 40 years old, it was amy's first mammogram, one she had been putting off for a year. amy described the moment she found out in a story she filed for "gma." >> then, last week, a tornado of tests. doctors move quickly when their concerned. finally, the diagnosis, that's still hard for me to say out loud. i have breast cancer. i know that i have a fight ahead of me. but i also know that i have a lot worth fighting for. >> truly an inspirational woman. this is something she's going to have to deal with. but she has all of the support

of everybody here and her family, as well. >> amy does plan on having a double mastectomy. you can see that she broke the news alongside "gma's" robin roberts, a breast cancer survivor herself. she put it off for a while. but hopefully this serves as an inspiration for women -- if you're scared, it's better to know than to not know. and women are encouraged just to get the test. >> just as precautionary. love is in the air. why you may be hearing wedding bells today from coast-to-coast. >> it is a special day. and also this morning, restriction reversal. one of the biggest airports in the world will soon end its ban on liquids. will this set a trend for all airports? and will we be able to see something like that happening in the u.s.? we'll have to wait to see. plus a wild wet wreck. an adrenaline junkie is pushing the limits during that speedboat crash you're seeing right there. luckily, we can tell you that he made it out okay. but the scene of the crash

and welcome back. the good news about gas prices is just getting better as we all prepare for the holidays. the national average for a gallon right now is $3.24. but most of the country is paying less than $3 a gallon. >> early christmas gift. and fewer american homeowners are falling behind on mortgage payments. one credit agency says the number of people making late home loan payments reached a five-year low over the summer. credit for that goes to rising home values low interest rates and stable jobs. here's some irony for you.

blockbuster final in-store rental. all of the franchises have closed their door. the final rental was made in hawaii on saturday night. a couple of employees posed with the last customer. and his video selection, appropriately titled "this is the end," starring seth rogen and james franco. and today's sequential day, if you didn't notice 11-12-13 means you have a decent chance seeing a couple going to the chapel. wedding industry estimates say more than 3,300 couples are getting hitched today. that's nearly an eight-fold increase over the same date last year. only one more sequential date this century. that's next december the 13th, which falls on a saturday. good luck to all those soon-to-be newlyweds out there. >> that's going to be a year we see a hike in the wedding. tuesday, it's hard to get married on a tuesday. saturday, that's a different story. >> that's the good news. >> if you didn't get it done this year and like sequential

sensor that says what's inside. as for the u.s. a tsa official says they're looking at options. but don't expect to lift the ban on liquids anytime soon. now, we turn to a dramatic end to a high-speed police chase in flint michigan. a suspect ditched his van on an overpass and tried to get away on foot. then, he jumped over a guardrail. and a state trooper who tried to grab him he fell over too. both men plunging 25 feet to a grassy area below. amazingly, though, both men survived that fall. and this video just released to a british newspaper. a power boat racer cheating death while traveling 130 miles per hour. watch his boat go airborne and somersault 1 1/2 times before lapding topside down. the driver, just fine. he was pulled out moments after the wreck. and only suffered a bit of stiffness. lucky guy. >> yeah. usually amused at the antics

morning from the bay bridge north. if we have light rain it will be in the next couple of hours to santa rosa and the sonoma county coast. temperatures are in the 50's. enjoy the mild weather. how is the commute? >> we are starting in gilroy with the gas tanker accident in the final clean up stage along highway 152 at lovers lane. absorbent is there to clean it up. we have westbound traffic over to 101. the drive time traffic shows everything is running smooth. it is early. tracy to dublin along 580 at 24 minutes and highway 4 antioch to concord is 14 minutes and san rafael into san francisco is 16 minutes. the bay bridge toll plaza shows clear conditions over to the tolls. >> developing news today the long-awaited work begins to demolish the span of the bay

bridge. the start was delayed last week. abc7 news reporter, amy hollyfield has a preview from treasure island. >> in with the new -- the new beautiful bay bridge behind us -- out with the old. they are starting to demolish the old bridge. the project is expected to cost $281 million. officials say it is a dangerous job. they will take it down one piece at a time. they are getting a late start. the plan was to start after the new bridge opened labor day weekend. they were so busy dealing with the bolt issue on the new bridge that delayed the planning on the demolition. they are a couple of months late getting started. it will not be a quick job. it is dangerous. one piece at a time. it will take three years before they can get it taken down and moved
