and good friday morning. we do begin with president obama taking the fall for the problematic rollout of his health care law. >> during a news conference that lasted under an hour, the president profusely apologized nearly 30 different ways. >> i do make apologies for not having executing better. that's on me. that's something i deeply regret. we did fumble the ball on it. i feel deeply responsible. >> and the president also announced a rule change to his plan. abc's kristin fisher, live in washington, now, with details. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning, john and diana. you know, the president says that he made the rule change to keep his promise. that if you like your health insurance plan, then you could keep it. but industry leaders say that this rule change could destabilize the market and result in higher premiums for consumers. a presidential mea culpa. >> we did fumble the ball on it. and what i'm going to do is make sure that we get it fixed. >> reporter: it's a huge relief for senate democrats, who are now scrambling to come up with

their own legislative fix to the affordable care act. >> the president's announcement was a great first step. and we will probably need legislation to make it stick. >> reporter: but first, today, the house will vote on a republican-led solution, even though house republicans still ultimately want to repeal it. >> when you look at obama care, frankly, i don't think there's a way to fix it. >> reporter: the president's fix is only temporary. the last two years, the president promised, if you like your plan, you can keep your plan. >> if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. >> reporter: but that wasn't true. so, the president is proposing that the millions of americans who have been dropped by their health insurance, should now be allowed to keep their current plan for one more year. the problem is, the insurance companies may not cooperate. it's a big, black mark on the president's signature achievement and the democrats who supported it. >> i feel deeply responsible for making it harder for them, rather than easier for them to

continue to promote the core value. >> reporter: and that also applies to the president himself. according to a new poll, for the first time, the majority of americans no longer trust him. john? diana? >> kristin fisher, live for us in washington this morning. thank you. and now, to the philippines, where one week after the typhoon, help is finally getting to those who desperately need it. the philippine air force dropped supplies to villagers who have been cut off since the storm. the death toll now stands at over 3,600. >> and the pace of international aid has picked up, as well. abc's gloria riviera is in manila today. >> reporter: good morning, john and diana. the relief effort here on the ground is taking a turn in right direction. in terms of u.s. aid alone, helicopters have been able to get to a town outside of tacloban. they're able to load up and ferry supplies to some of the

most remote regions where people may not have had any help for a week. and there's been an area of the dome in tacloban that people have been able to get to for a shelter. but the filth and grime accumulating there is extreme. for so many here who need so much, the wait goes on. there is a bit of good news, however. lots of internat organizations, able to get to the region, get on the ground. that means they can get to work. john? diana? >> all right. gloria, thank you. the u.s. has pledged $20 million in cash and supplies. other nations are matching that. >> but it's china that's not really looking good here. as of last night, china had pledged just $1.6 million in aid. that, by the way, is less than ikea and even coke. here at home, several developing stories overnight, including a texas town, south of dallas, remaining empty this morning after a massive pipeline explosion. workers at a chevron drilling site in milford accidentally ruptured that ten-inch gas pipeline yesterday. it sent smoke and flames that could be seen for miles away. the entire town was evacuated. but there were no reports of injuries. crews are letting the fire burn itself out. it could be tomorrow before some

of those people get to go home. also happening right now, a brush fire is burning out of control north of new york city. the wind-driven flames spreading through the rough terrain in rockland county. there are no homes believed to be in danger. firefighters pulled back for the night. they plan to resume at daybreak. nearly four years ago, a southern california family simply vanished. the mcstays, mom, dad and two kids, left in a hurry, with eggs still on the kitchen counter and their beloved dog in the backyard. it's a case that's long frustrated investigators. now, they say the four bodies found earlier this week in the mojave desert may be that of the missing family. we'll find out more later today, at a sheriff's news conference. and now, to canada. the toronto mayor is apologizing yet again for his behavior. during a live tv interview yesterday, rob ford let fly an obscenity when he denied telling a staffer that he wanted to have oral sex. with his wife by his side, ford later said he was sorry. >> the revelations yesterday of cocaine, escorts, prostitution, has pushed me over the line. and i used unforgivable language.

and again, i apologize. >> ford has adamantly said that he will not resign. but the city council is now introducing a motion today to strip some of his powers. and the city has canceled school trips to city hall. mayor ford and his brother, by the way, have accepted a deal for their own tv show. all right. in california, the new labor agreement that ended a strike by bay area transit workers may now be in jeopardy. that's because b.a.r.t. management, claiming a provision that it never agreed to somehow wound up in the final deal. b.a.r.t.'s board of directors is meeting today to discuss their options. among them is a rejection of the new contract. notorious boston gangster james "whitey" bulger will spend the rest of his life in prison. a judge told bulger that his crimes were almost unfathomable, as she sentenced him yesterday to two consecutive life sentences. the 84-year-old former mob boss also got an earful from victims' relatives. his racketeering conviction including murder, extortion, drug trafficking and money laundering.

the woman who had claimed she had a fling with alec baldwin has been found guilty of stalking him. a new york judge sentenced genevieve sabourin to six months in jail. that's on top of the 30 days she got for outbursts in court this week. the judge said she waged a relentless campaign to harass baldwin and his wife. she insists she was seeking closure. moving on to the weather now across the nation. there will be in the gulf coast and into florida. rain in the pacific northwest, and snow in the mountains. it will be a dry day for denver and minneapolis. windy, though, in the rockies and into arizona and new mexico. >> it is a pleasant friday in the northeast. highs in the 40s and 50s. warm in the southern california area, through new mexico. seattle and portland, all in the mid-40s. all right. coming up, guinness has an entire list of brand-new records. we're going to show you the most bizarre and amazing feats. growing disaster. people scrambling to safety after a giant sinkhole starts to swallow up homes. might not be over yet. and close call. a woman's car starts to sink to the bottom of a pond. we have new video to show you this morning of her dramatic rescue.

welcome back. asian stock markets saw powerful rallieses overnight as wall street's record roll keeps on rolling on. the dow, 37th record close of the year. that was posted yesterday. the s&p 500 also hitting an all-time high. stocks climbing after fed chairman nominee janet yellen signaled her support for continuing the fed's economic stimulus program. wall street's rally. great news for your 401(k). fidelity says retirement plans are at record highs. workers who have contributed over the last decade now seeing

now, to a mystery in the skies just off the coast of miami. a pilot reported that a passenger had fallen out of the door of the aircraft as it flew above 2,000 feet. this was the emergency call to the faa. mayday. mayday. i have a door ajar. i'm heading towards tamiami. >> you have a door open? >> i have a door ajar. and a passenger that fell down. >> but a massive search turned up no sign of the passenger. they have not confirmed whether or not that emergency call was legitimate. a little boy in chicago has healing to do a few weeks after being attacked by a coyote. the 3-year-old suffered a facial wound in the attack which took place in an alley. the boy thought the coyote was a dog. four coyotes were found in the area soon after. they have been put down. the youngster has tested negative for reebbyes.

cynthia was on the phone with 911 after driving her car into a pond. before police could even arrive, some good samaritans showed up with a flat bed truck. garza said she was relieved she was the only one in that car. >> i dropped my kids off home actually, because i wanted to take the car to the shop. and if i hadn't dropped them off, they would have been in the car with me. >> her rescuers arrived just in the nick of time. the car sank only moments after this video. >> wow. three-time indy 500 winner dario frankiechitti said he is done with car racing. you may recall this crash he was involved in last month. >> his doctors have told him that it's just too risky for him to get behind the wheel again. his wife ashley judd confirmed news on twitter. saying franchitti's next phase will be just as impressive. time, now, for the rest of the world in sports.
