>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, november 17th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn, good morning to you. live doppler 7hd this morning not picking up any rain but fog has overspread parts of the bay. that sun coming up at 6:52. only some of you will see it. it will take some time for the fog to burn back. it's clear in the south bay so mid-40s for you around san jose and mountain view with upper 30s in the north bay. 50s around the bay. by noontime still a little bit of fog along the coast and in san francisco. but oakland and out toward the san ramon valley look for low

60s. mid-and upper 630s by 4:00. another sunny and mild day but it will be changing. in fact, it will look more seasonal in the days to come. i'll have a look at the rainy outlook coming up in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. a shooting in san francisco south of market district early this morning has sent two people to a local trauma center. that shooting near sixth and jesse streets happened just after 2:00 this morning. one woman is dead and another injured. no word yet on the condition of the victims. police are investigating what led up to this violence. we will bring you those details as new information becomes available. police are still investigating. we will bring you any new details as information becomes available this morning. a dispute over bart's tentative union contract is heating up this weekend. but in a new development both sides have agreed to meet tomorrow. bart's board of directors says an error gives the union more paid family medical leave than was negotiated. union members have already voted to approve the deal.

abc7 news reporter sergio has the latest in the bart saga. >> reporter: after crunching the numbers the unions are responding to friday night's bart's board meeting. >> we are absolutely horrified with the district after everything that went on, a contentious bargaining situation, two strikes and two people killed, that they would take this action. >> reporter: section 4.8, family medical leave, gives bart employees six weeks of paid medical leave to take care of a sick family member. this is what sidelined the bart union contract. >> if we approve a bad deal that's potentially harmful for the fiscal well-being of the district, that's not a good option. >> the board says it will cost $44.2 million over the next four years, a figure the unions dispute. >> we're doing our own cost estimates that says it's about 1.2 each year for the four years. >> still, the board says section 4.8 was not supposed to be part

of the agreement and only included because of a clerical error. but yet there's signatures of chief negotiator tom hock and former assistant manager. the board wants to go back to the union to fix the mistake, but the unions say this deal is done. >> we signed an agreement. we had an agreement and that's what we expect to be honored. >> this week both sides said the chance of a strike is pretty slim. the plan for now is for members of the union to meet with bart management on monday. that's when we see the latest twist in this more than six-month contract negotiation will be handled. abc7 news. >> bart riders say they are concerned about the new twist. they have mixed reactions about who is to blame. >> if there's a clause in the contract that says they are allowed to go back and look at it in case of mistakes, then yes. i'm not a legal expert, but i

would say otherwise no. >> you can't just cancel something you already signed. if you already signed it, then that shows it went into effect. they should have had somebody overlooking it before anybody actually signed the contract. >> all the people we talked to agree that a bart strike would be the worst possible outcome. part of highway 116 is remaining closed right now after being shut down following an injury accident in sonoma county. the accident happened at 4:15 yesterday afternoon near adobe road west of petaluma. part of this is still shutdown. a driver crashed into a power play pole, bringing down the wires, causing several spot fires. fires were quickly put out and pg&e has been working throughout the night to repair that pole. there is no estimated time of reopening. new this morning, a close call for several young oakley teenagers who had to be treated for alcohol poisoning last night.

an adult found them so intoxicated one girl was unconscious. oakley police say a group of five girls, ages 13 to 15, somehow got their hands on a bottle of vodka and drink from it at a local park. they returned to one girl's home on canopy lane, and the parents were not home. when one passed out, the others called for help. energy crews wound up taking three of the girls to a local hospital. they are going to be okay. police are looking into how they got the vodka in the first place. we are learning a former bay area resident is one of the people found shot to death in a murder-suicide in fresno. authorities say the victim and suspect were a recently-married couple. the man was a resident of hayward until 2007, when he moved to fresno. police say they found no signs of a physical struggle. the santa clara county sheriff's office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that

left a woman dead. it was early yesterday morning when the sound of breaking glass, pounding and yelling were heard coming from a triplex on cleveland avenue. three sheriff's deputies arrived and confronted by the woman. authorities say she had a knife. >> but i hear only the woman's voice, like a lady yell and say can i have the kids? and i don't want to repeat it. after one minute i heard boom, boom, boom, and i awake. >> deputies ordered the woman to drop the knife. they say she refused. they then opened fire and she died at the scene. >> a safe water supply is the concern now of the survivors of the typhoon haiyan after the disaster. without clean water people are at risk of catching deadly diseases. nearly 1200 people remain missing, more than 3600 are confirmed dead. more relief supplies are on the way for the nearly 2 million people displaced. the u.s. has already delivered

some 623,000 pounds of supplies. china has just agreed to send a medical team and two million dollars in aid. philippines president says he's going to camp out in tacloban, the city hardest hit. he plans to stay until enough aid arrives. he has been facing harsh criticism over his administration's disaster readiness and response. here in the bay area hundreds of families with ties to the region gathered last night to share stories and information. abc7 news reporter lisa has the story. you will see this only on abc7 news. >> welcome to all of us with families and friends affected by the typhoon. >> everyone at this special mass at the church has two things in common. most are from the tacloban

region of the philippines and they have all been impacted by the typhoon. >> my family is across the ocean. >> tales of loss and sorrow fill this church because what many call their home doesn't look like their childhood memories. this woman lost her sister and relatives. her grief is overwhelming. >> i don't know what to do. every day of my life i think i wish i could go home and see them, see my sister. >> just getting to the devastated area isn't easy and getting information out is almost as hard. >> thousands of taclobans live here in the bay area and many at this event have still not been able to reach their loved ones in the philippines. >> roberto still doesn't know if his daughter is alive. >> the situation, you know, if

she's okay or what. >> he's taking the prayers from tonight with him thursday when he flies to the philippines to look for his six-year-old himself. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. volunteers from the bay area are on their way to the area. a team of four kaiser permanente doctors, nurses and t chnicians left from sfo last night. the volunteers say they are basically flying into the unknown. >> the communication is very poor coming out of the most affected areas. so we've heard very little. but we have heard that there's a lot of medical need and there's a lot of need for medical supplies. >> they will set up a medical clinic. other teams from kaiser permanente will be leaving in the next few weeks. happening today the national federation of filipino american associations will collect canned food, clothing, toiletries and other relief supplies for the victims of the philippines typhoon.

you see the information there. the event take place starting at 3:30 this afternoon at san jose's north side community center on north sixth street. cash donations will also be accepted by the red cross. abc7 news is hosting a fundraiser to help typhoon victims tomorrow. you will be able to make donations to the red cross relief fund through a live hotline from 11:00 a.m. to 11:35 p.m. we hope you will be able to contribute. we will have all the details tomorrow when the fundraiser begins. two years after the shooting rampage at the lee high quarry in cupertino, the abc7 i-team is getting new insight into what led to the tragedy. dan has interviewed the killer's son. he gives personal account of life with his father before he shot nine of his co-workers, killing three. >> what made your dad snap? >> everybody has suspicions. but -- >> what are yours?

from the west coast to the united kingdom, people are still talking about batkid. on friday alone 230,000 tweets with the #sfbatkid went out. 19,000 photos were posted on instagram. yesterday the family of batkid stayed in san francisco to be tourists and enjoy the city. now that gag that will city is safe, five-year-old miles scott can take off his cape, although he can put on again anytime he wants, thanks to the generosity of another young boy. friday miles was a star as thousands turned out to watch him play the role of hero. the suit was actually on loan from that young man, 7-year-old james coin, from the sacramento area. james agreed to let miles slip into the costume for the day. >> i helped him by giving him my bat suit from halloween this year so his parents and his family don't have to spend any money.

>> so sweet, james. now he is going even a step further. he's agreed to let miles keep that costume so miles can pretend to be batkid anytime he wants. when miles gets back to school he will return to a hero's welcome. students at the school are making posters and decorating the school. miles will be back in kindergarten this week. one more note, the company behind the batkid t-shirts raised $10,000 for the make-a-wish foundation. kid monarch clothing company in san francisco sold all 3,000 t-shirts printed. if you want to grab one, they are now available again for preorder on the website. we have a link at abc7news.com. all the proceeds go to the make-a-wish foundation. ucsf doctors took part in a fundraiser to support children fighting cancer yesterday. they went bald to raise money and awareness for childhood

cancer research. a very brave doctor took the lead. she is the chief of pediatric oncology at ucsf children's hospital. one young patient and his father spoke about fighting cancer. >> cancer cells are the bad guys and i picked you to take the bad guys out. >> if specific research that was done at ucsf as a result of grans like though given like the baldness save their child's life. >> he and his dad joined the fundraising effort. more than $22,000 from the head-shaving event about go to a foundation to fund research programs. one of our colleagues, his son was part of that. he and his son both did the head shaving. meteorologist lisa argen here now talking about rain, rain. >> yeah, a couple days away.

right now we have plenty of fog out there. it's clear in mountain view, though. live doppler 7hd. the sun setting at 4:57. so not a whole lot of time to enjoy the sunny and pretty nice afternoon. so get out and enjoy it." things will be changing the next couple of days from our roof camera. you can see the clouds around san francisco. temperatures still in the low 50s here with low 40s down the road on the peninsula. redwood city 42 and los gatos, half moon bay has fog at 45. this is mt. tam. you see the low clouds and fog into marin county with 36 in santa rosa. 37 in novato and livermore at 45. partly cloudy for you in concord and the livermore valley. here's a look at the partly cloudy sky, the exploratorium. making for a pretty nice start to the day. the sunrise should be pretty spectacular. at 6:52. patchy coastal clouds this morning. they are situated around the bay, as well. sunshine through about 11:00,

12:00. here's the plan then. you notice that the clouds that continue to shrink westward and by about 1:00 most of you are sunny but the fog will stay from the san mateo coast about then sort of reform around point reyes. it's going to be a cool afternoon with the light on shore flow ting to stay with us throughout the day today. high pressure is off the coast but we will look for not only increasing clouds in advance of this system tomorrow, but temperatures will be a little bit cooler and then the rain does arrive just in time for that morning commute on tuesday. so it could make it a little sloppy and slow going. there are just tons of leaves on the ground and with just a little rain it could clog the storm drains and cause problems out there. by monday night sonoma county 10:00, notice we have the rain up through cloverdale. trying to sink south through santa rosa but by the early morning commute we have the wet roadways and most of the moderate rain up to the north. still showers throughout the day on tuesday. by the afternoon commute another

wave of energy heads our way. still some showers into tuesday afternoon and even wednesday we will get a piece of this energy. some more moving into southern california. we aren't done with it. looks like thursday morning maybe a lingering shower. from monday night to wednesday things looking a little more seasonal with the rain returning. 66 los gatos. milder temperatures today. low 60s around santa cruz with 65 on the peninsula. mid-50s here. cooler afternoon with partial afternoon clearing along the coast. san francisco once again low 60s with the partly cloudy skies. then turning sunny. 64 for santa rosa. you have the fog right now. 63 for you in san rafael with gray conditions. mid-60s should do it today for castro valley and oakland. as you head on inland partly cloudy now and then turning sunnier and milder throughout the afternoon. 66 in livermore with the san ramon valley coming in in the low 60s. accuweather seven-day forecast,

we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning, everybody. >> we do have partly cloudy skies to start out this sunday with cool temperatures and more fog in the north bay. 36. it's chilly in santa rosa with more fog for you. 53 oakland is 46 in san jose. a look at our exploratorium camera. nice-looking shot out there. the fog will continue to clear and we will see sunny conditions with average high temperatures today. so numbers low to mid-60s return inland around the bay. low to mid-60s. we will get the clearing by 10:00, 101:00 over most parts of the bay. still cool with the on shore flow at the coast. another dry day before the rain arrives. details in in a minute. carolyn. >> thank you. new this morning the navy said an aerial drone misfunctioned and struck an aerial ship during training maneuvers off the coast. two sailors suffered minor burns during a guided missile cruiser. it happened yesterday.

the mishap occurred while the uss chancellorville was testing it's combat weapons system. the drone malfunctioned when it was launched to test the ship's radar. so far the navy has no estimate of the damage. n.a.s.a.'s newest mars explorer is set to blast off tomorrow afternoon on a ten-month journey to the red planet. more than half the components of the maiden spacecraft were build right here in the bay area. chad meyers has a look at the mission. >> for scientists or space enthusiasts alike. mars continues to amaze. it's no surprise the red planet is the subject of five active n.a.s.a. missions, three in orbit and two on the surface. and liftoff of the atlas 5 with curiosity. the planetary puzzle about mars. >> you probably heard of curiosity.

nasa's rover studying climate on the ground. and the sixth mission is hoping to study mars from above and answer a 4 billion-year-old question, what made the fourth planet from the sun turn red and barren. >> it's gone from the desert and geological world, kind of boring rocks, to this exciting, blooming world with a hisory that includes warm, wet times, climate change, landslides, ice sheets, buried ice, unbelievable. >> scientists believe mars may have looked a lot like earth with blue skies warm temperatures. >> we see the record in the samples of the frozen soils today. >> collecting material in the upper atmosphere will give them a better understanding over the red planet's history. >> we expect to learn how the modern mars works in detail to see its climate state, to understand how the atmosphere was lost to space, how mars may have lost a magnetic field, to take that information and map it back in time. >> the journey will be long.

maven will have to travel ten months and millions of miles. but the journey and the $661 million price tag are worth it, especially if it can unlock the big question, about life of -- did life of exist on mars. chad meyers, cnn, atlanta. >> today kaiser permanente will close down it's hayward pediatric inpatient facility. young people requiring hospitalization will have to go to the oakland medical center. they said 99% of the chefs services they provide is through outpatient services. it is just the pediatric unit that is shutting down. social media can be a really powerful force for change. we've seen it time and time again. recently a mother in san jose used social media to reach out to abc7 news anchor cheryl jennings for help. she said her daughter's fiancee

needs surgery to save his sight, and the family can't afford it. so cheryl sent the message out on facebook and twitter, not expecting anything really, but what happened next turned out to be a miracle. >> reporter: this is the san jose family who desperately needed help and asked for it through social media. they had an urgent plea to save the eyesight of william fleming. he and his fiancee want him to be able to see their five children grow up. william wants to continue to work to support the family. but he has a rare eye disease that's causing him to slowly lose his vision. it's called caritonotis. it affects one in 500 people. >> it's like look through a dirty window. >> he wears hard large contact lenses so he can see, work and drive. he's a former college football player that's now a caregiver for his fiancee's brother, bo, who has cerebral palsy.

>> make his breakfast in the morning, change his diaper, help with his shoes. he also has leg braces and help him get in his wheelchair. >> they talked to a number of doctors about his condition. they recommended cornia transplants. >> but those are so invasive and painful. the recovery time is a year for each eye. >> their research led them to a doctor in beverly hills who has created a procedure for correcting the damage, but it costs $18,000 and is not covered by insurance. so the family placed an appeal for money on the giveforward.org website with little success. that's when her mother sent me an e-mail through facebook that said could you help me get the story for donations out. is he's a caring, loving father who is a caregiver to my son who has c. p. >> i thought let's try to get somebody out there that could help and then i thought of you guys because that's all i watch is abc7 news.

>> i put desiree's plea on my company facebook page and i said an abc7 viewer sent us this heartbreaking story asking for help. just a few days later i received an e-mail from the publicist from the doctor who william wants to perform the surgery. the e-mail said someone just saw your tweet and is interested in helping william with the cost of his procedure. i wanted to call william right away, but the doctor wanted to tell william himself so i kept the secret and went to the family home in san jose. we skyped in while the man called dr. brian. you can see the shock on their faces as they try to process the doctor's good news. >> an anonymous donor has stepped in and was very moved by hearing about you and they are actually going to take care of the procedure for you and you will be able to have the procedure. >> oh, my god, seriously? oh, my god! that is so awesome! >> thank you! >> thank you!

6:52, to be exact, according to lisa argen. she will be along shortly with the full accuweather forecast. happening today a group of students at san francisco's george washington high school plans to protest what they call vanity sizing by clothing stores. they are part of a group "about-face" shown here in a previous protest of victoria secret. the teenage girl says they size apparel to manipulate emotions and empty wallets. their motto is real size, not lies. this afternoon from 2:00 to 3:30 they will be protesting at market and powell street where there's always a crowd at the cable car turn-around. they will ask people to sign a petition calling for label changes at the gap and other clothing retailers. bay area players and coaches from the junior giants program were honored yesterday. san francisco hall of famer willie mccovey honored the

>> one city is getting a new beach, actually an old one restored. they are working around the clock to recreate 8,000 feet of crown beach in alameda that's gradually eroded away. it's a huge endeavor. laura anthony has an up-close look at the process. >> reporter: putting back what nature has washed away over the last 25 years on crown beach in almeda. as the giant pipe pours tons of

wet sand on the shoreline, and bulldozers move it around to rebuild the beach to its original 1987 footprint. it is a man-made beach and, as you see, it's become very narrow. this will restore it to its original engineered footprint and everyone will get a chance to enjoy the beautiful crown and almeda beaches. >> the sand is being piped in through a pipeline that extends from a barge sitting about a half-mile offshore. the material was vacuumed from the floor of the bay near angel island. in the end, 82,000 cubic yards of sand will be imported here to rebuild the beach that's a mile and a half in length. an alameda resident stopped by on his bike to take some pictures of the process. there's no trucks. i mean, it would take an enormous number of trucks going up and down our street here to do it any other way. they are doing it right, i think.

>> the reconstruction of crown beach is expected to be done by the end of this year and should last two decades or more. in almeda, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> there's been quite a bit of fog out there this morning, but you are saying that is going to left and another pleasant day on tap? >> yeah. we might have to wait a while. we are looking at partly to mostly cloudy skies with reduced visibility in the north bay. we will be losing this by the next 48 hours or so when we begin to track rain moving into the north bay. it's going to spread over the bay area and provide our first weather system that could bring anywhere from a quarter inch to an inch of rain through the middle of the week. so that's exciting. kgo roof camera right now with the cloudy skies. and with that insulation we are in the low 50s in the city. 46 in san jose where it's partly cloudy. low 40s los gatos. half moon bay with better visibility, in the 40s, as

well. from mt. tam you can see how pretty this is, the low clouds and fog. it is really settling into the valleys of the north bay. so with the cool conditions we have temperatures just in the mid-30s up in santa rosa. 45 in napa and by the delta 39 degrees. so here's where the fog is from santa rosa to novato. pretty good visibility elsewhere and half moon bay at about seven miles. our forecast highlights then, including the temperatures that with that fog has allowed for the warmer conditions up in napa and a little warmer from san carlos to hayward this morning. so once the fog burns back, we will look for a pretty nice afternoon. the exploratorium camera showing you that we aren't all gray around the bay. so with the chilly conditions and the coastal fog for your morning hours, then we will translate that into sunny conditions. cool to mild afternoon. then a dry day tomorrow with increasing clouds. the rain does arrive on tuesday. so here's a look at our

satellite and radar composite. a weak system to the north of us bringing some very light returns up to oregon and washington. and high pressure finally gives way as the plough moves from west to east from the pacific. that will allow for some moisture to head our way. a couple of disturbances allowing for the wet weather to continue for about a day and a half. so here's a look at monday night where we continue to stay dry, except well to the north. sonoma county, cloverdale, look at rain by your tuesday morning commute. showers around the bay right on through midday. by 4:00 in the afternoon still some wet weather. high elevation snow in the sierra and another piece of energy comes our way by wednesday. this will allow for a few more showers into the day. so in terms of the amounts, we are still looking at anywhere from about a half-inch to a quarter inch and more along the coastal hills. 64 in sacramento for your high today with sunny conditions. back home upper 50s from half
