>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, november 17th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn, good morning to you. the past several months the live doppler 7hd has been tracking the low clouds and fog. they are dissipating. but in the next 24 to 48 hours we will be tracking rain. a return to rain for the bay area for the early part of the week, work week. the rest of the forecast, though, calls for patchy fog in the north bay right now and it's beginning to break up. so just about an hour or two left of that with 40s and 50s. then by noontime we are looking at upper 50s along the coast to the low 60s around the bay.

by the afternoon it's a sunny and cool-to-mild day. we will look for a nice end of the weekend before the clouds thicken tomorrow and the rain arrives on tuesday. details in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news now from russia. officials say a passenger airliner has crashed while landing in the city of kazan, killing all 44 people aboard. the report says the boeing 737 be longing to the airlines crashed around 7:30 p.m. local time. about 450 miles east of moscow. there were no immediate indications of what may have caused that crash. if we get more information during this newscast, we will bring it to you right away. a shooting in san francisco south of market district early this morning has sent two people to a local trauma center. one woman and dead and another is critically injured. it happened in parking lot between sixth and jesse streets as night clubs in the area were

closing. police are trying to determine what led up to the shooting. one victim died at the local hospital and the second victim is being treat ford life-threatening injuries. a witness, who did not give his name, said there was a loud argument between a bunch of people and followed by gunshots. >> there were so many people arguing and the next thing i heard was a bunch of gunfire. sound like two guns, but i don't know. >> that man says he heard between six and nine shots. no arrests have been made and police have not released any information yet. #* about a suspect. breaking news in san jose where police are investigating a fatal shooting early this morning. it happened around 3:00 a.m. on golden rain drive. that's where police found a man who had been shot. he died at the scene. investigators say they don't know the circumstances surrounding what is that city's 42nd homicide this year.

last year there were 46, the highest count since the 1990s. flush a dispute over bart's tentative union contract is heating up this weekend. but in a new development both sides have agreed to meet tomorrow. bart's board of directors says a mistake gives union members more paid family leave than was negotiated. as you know, union members have already voted to approve the deal. abc7 news reporter sergio has the latest in the bart saga. >> reporter: after crunching the numbers the unions are responding to friday night's bart board meeting. >> we are absolutely horrified with the district after everything that went on, a contentious bargaining situation, two strikes and two people killed, that they would take this action. >> reporter: section 4.8, family medical leave, gives bart employees six weeks of paid leave to take care of a sick family member. this is what sidelined the bart union contract. >> if we approve a bad deal that's potentially harmful for

the long-term fiscal well-being of the district, that's not a good option. >> the board says it will cost $4.2 million over the next four years, a figure the unions dispute. >> we're doing our own cost estimates that says it's about 1.2 each year for the four years. >> still, the board says section 4.8 was not supposed to be part of the agreement and only included because of a clerical error. but yet there's signatures of chief negotiator tom hock and former assistant manager. the board wants to go back to the union to fix the mistake, but the unions say this deal is done. >> we signed an agreement. we had an agreement and that's what we expect to be honored. >> this weekend both sides said the chance of a strike is pretty slim. the plan for now is for members of the union to meet with bart management on monday. that's when we see the latest twist in this more than six-month contract negotiation will be handled. abc7 news.

>> bart riders say they are concerned about the new twist. they have mixed reactions about who is to blame. >> if there's a clause in the contract that says they are allowed to go back and look at it in case of mistakes, then yes. i'm not a legal expert, but i would say otherwise no. >> you can't just cancel something you already signed. if you already signed it, then that shows it went into effect. they should have had somebody overlooking it before anybody actually signed the contract. >> different views, but all the people we talked to agreed a bart strike would be the worst possible outcome. highway 116 is reopened after being shut down yesterday after follow an injury accident in sonoma county. the accident happened at 4:15 yesterday afternoon near adobe

road west of petaluma. part of this is still shutdown. a driver crashed into a power play pole, bringing down the wires, causing several spot fires. fires were quickly put out and pg&e has been working throughout the night to repair that pole. new this morning, a close call for several young oakley teenagers who had to be treated for alcohol poisoning last night. an adult found them so intoxicated one girl was unconscious. oakley police say a group of five girls, ages 13 to 15, somehow got their hands on a bottle of vodka and drink from it at a local park. they returned to one girl's home on canopy lane, and the parents were not home. when one passed out, the others called for help. emergency crews wound up taking three of the girls to a local hospital. they are going to be okay. police are looking into how they got the vodka in the first place. >> a save water supply is the big concern now for survivors of the philippines typhoon disaster.

without clean water people are at risk of catching deadly diseases. here are the latest numbers. nearly 1200 people remain missing, more than 3600 are confirmed dead. more relief supplies are on the way for the nearly 2 million people displaced. the u.s. has already delivered some 623,000 pounds of supplies. china has just agreed to send a medical team and two million dollars in aid. the philippines president says he's going to camp out in tacloban, the city hardest hit. he plans to stay until enough aid arrives. he has been facing harsh criticism over his administration's disaster readiness and response. here in the bay area hundreds of people with ties to the region gathered last night to share stories and information. abc7 news reporter lisa has the story. you will see this only on abc7 news. >> welcome to all of us with families and friends affected by the typhoon.

>> everyone at this special mass at the church has two things in common. most are from the tacloban region of the philippines and they have all been impacted by the typhoon. >> my family is across the ocean. >> tales of loss and sorrow fill this church because what many call their home doesn't look like their childhood memories. this woman lost her sister and -- two sisters in law and niece in the typhoon. her grief is overwhelming. >> i don't know what to do. every day of my life i think i wish i could go home and see them, see my sister. >> just getting to the devastated area isn't easy and getting information out is almost as hard. >> thousands of taclobans live here in the bay area and many at this event have still not been able to reach their loved ones in the philippines.

roberto still doesn't know if his daughter is alive. >> the situation, you know, if she's okay or what. >> he's taking the prayers from tonight with him thursday when he flies to the philippines to look for his six-year-old himself. in saratoga, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. volunteers from the bay area are on their way to the area. a team of four kaiser permanente doctors, nurses and technicians left from sfo last night. the volunteers say they are basically flying into the unknown. >> the communication is very poor coming out of the most affected areas. so we've heard very little. but we have heard that there's a lot of medical need and there's a lot of need for medical supplies. >> they will set up a medical clinic. other teams from kaiser permanente will be leaving in the next few weeks. happening today the national

federation of filipino american associations will collect canned food, clothing, toiletries and other relief supplies for the victims. you see the information there. the event take place starting at 3:30 this afternoon at san jose's north side community center on north sixth street. cash donations will also be accepted by the red cross. abc7 news is hosting a fundraiser to help typhoon victims tomorrow. you will be able to make donations to the red cross relief fund through a live hotline from 11:00 a.m. to 11:35 p.m. we hope you will be able to contribute. we will have all the details tomorrow when the fundraiser begins. so far the bay area has really had an outpouring of support. >> of course. that's great news. we are looking at another mild day today, but things are definitely changing in the short term. here's a look from our tam cam. you can see the clouds parting. in the north bay it's cool and

>> as president obama struggles with the affordable care act rollout, democrats in both houses worry the healthcare fiasco could hurt their re-election chances next year. but this morning on nbc's meet the press, the congresswoman house minority leader nancy pelosi said there's still plenty of support for affordable healthcare and she doesn't think it will be the deciding factor in next year's vote. >> i don't think you can tell what will happen next year burks i will tell you this, democrats stand paul in support of an affordable care act. we have great candidates who are running who are concerned about our economy and are concerned that the government was shut down because of the whim on the part of the republicans.

all of these kinds of things are the concern of the american people. jobs will be the major issue in the campaign, as they always are. liberty to -- >> the republicans criticize the healthcare rollout in this week andy g. o. p. address, calling it political fraud. five people were injured as thousands of usc football fans rushed the field after stanford's upset loss to the trojans last night. police and fire crews were called to the coliseum to treat the injured and restore order. fire officials say five others were treated for injuries during the game. none of the injuries were life-threatening. usc won the game, 20-17. abc7 sports director larry beil will have the highlights later in sports. trench the west coast to the united kingdom, people all over the world are still talking about batkid.

on friday alone 230,000 tweets with the #sfbatkid went out. 19,000 photos were posted on instagram. yesterday the family of batkid stayed in san francisco to be tourists and enjoy the city. friday the five-year-old leukemia survivor was a star as thousands turned out to watch him play the role of now that san francisco is safe, he can relax. can take off his cape, although he can put on again anytime he wants, thanks to the generosity of another young boy. friday miles was a star as thousands turned out to watch him play the role of hero. the suit was actually on loan from that young man, 7-year-old james coin, from the sacramento area. james agreed to let miles slip into the costume for the day. >> i helped him by giving him my bat suit from halloween this year so his parents and his family don't have to spend any money. the sweetie pie james is going

one step if you recollect. he's agreed to let miles keep that costume so miles can pretend to be batkid anytime he wants. when miles gets back to school he will return to a hero's welcome.ñi students at the school are making posters and decorating the school. miles will be back in kindergarten this week. the company behind the bat kids t-shirts raised $10,000 for make-a-wish. kid monarch clothing company in san francisco sold all 3,000 t-shirts printed. if you want to grab one, they are now available again for preorder on the website. we have a link at abc7news.com. all the proceeds go to the make-a-wish foundation. you can get me one of those for christmas, lisa. >> okay. i'll put it down on my list. >> in the meantime, we are going to get some rain this week? >> definitely. we will get from a quarter to half-inch is likely around most of the bay. more in the north bay.

lots to talk about this morning. nice and quiet because you have sunny skies outside your window for most except if you are in santa rosa, san jose the clouds are beginning to part and we are look for a mild start to the day in san francisco. look at all that sun with just a few patches of clouds. we are ready, well into the 50s for san francisco. oakland. 45 in redwood city. 54 in half moon bay. here's a look from mt. tam will most of the fog is sitting from santa rosa up toward napa and temperatures are still chill yankees just in the low 40s from santa rosa. 48 in napa, 50 fairfield and nice in concord and livermore already. enjoy it, changes are on the way. the clouds will situate themselves along the shoreline. they will hug the coast and keep the shoreline and an mattio coast cool, as well as point reyes.

otherwise it's a nice day. increasing clouds tomorrow and the rain arrives on tuesday. just looked at a tweet from noah that said 54 million people are at risk today for severe weather in terms of thunderstorms and tornadoes. so here we are looking at a huge portion of the country that will see the possibility of severe storms. watch boxes from st. louis up through illinois, peoria and in through chicago. so we are looking at the possibility of super cells developing in a line here, and with those tornadoes or hook echoes will be occurring throughout this line in the next couple of hours. from milwaukee southward we are looking to severe risk. illinois and indiana over threat the next three, four hours and right into the evening hours. very dangerous weather in parts of the midwest and for the bay area high pressure lingers for another day. we will be look at this system tapping into some subtropical moisture for the next couple of days. here is how it goes as we time

it out into monday. most of the heavy activity monday night, 11:00, up toward cloverdale and sonoma county. the tuesday morning commute looks wet. the afternoon we are still looking at rain showers. the evening commute a bit of a break. then the next wave comes through wednesday morning. but this is focus the further south. the santa cruz mountains into the south bay and even parts of southern california looking at some snow and rain. back home, very quiet today. a nice afternoon. it will be breezy on the coast, though, with upper 50s for half moon bay. 51 san francisco. 64 for oakland with 65 in san jose. so a sunny afternoon on tap with increasing clouds tomorrow. here comes the rain on tuesday. another system on wednesday. it lingers into thursday morning and then sunny and dry, mild by the end of the week. it should be pretty interesting finally looking at a good deal of rain comparatively speaking since we've had nothing. abc7 news has another great

something quite remarkable. even when you have lost a leg, lost an arm, whatever the illness may be, you can achieve pretty much anything if you put your mind to it. >> among the twelve injured soldiers there are veterans who lost limbs in battle. major case phillip with the uk lost her leg in afghanistan. he offers severe burns and posttraumatic stress disorder after a suicide attempt in iraq. >> it makes people take notice what have we are doing and trying to show there isn't a limit. >> prince harry has not been limit bid his royal status. the warrior prince has served twice in afghanistan and knows the dangers soldiers face while on duty. this time last year he was flying attack helicopters in support of troops as part of a rapid reaction force. dominic west from the wire will also race prince harry. >> i can't get my head around

>> live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning, everybody. this is a view from mt. tam with the fog still lurking over the north bay. but elsewhere temperatures have climbed into the 50s. so if you are in the north bay, you've got the gray sky and the chilly numbers from about 43 in santa rosa to 48 in napa. elsewhere it's sunny by the delta, 50 there. 54 in the east bay valleys.

we are looking pretty pleasant here in downtown san francisco, in the mid-50s. the rest of the day we have 60s on tap with more sunshine, low to mid-60s bay and inland. the coast is cooler with an on shore push. then we are looking at rain headed our way. i'll show that to you and the accuweather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, lisa. new this morning the navy said an aerial drone misfunctioned and struck an aerial ship during training maneuvers off the coast. two sailors suffered minor burns during a guided missile cruiser. it happened yesterday. the mishap occurred while the uss chancellorville was testing it's combat weapons system. the drone malfunctioned when it was launched to test the ship's radar. so far the navy has no estimate of the damage. n.a.s.a.'s newest mars explorer is set to blast off tomorrow afternoon on a ten-month journey to the red planet.

more than half the components of the maven spacecraft were build right here in the bay area. chad meyers has a look at the maven mission. >> for scientists or space enthusiasts alike. mars continues to amaze. it's no surprise the red planet is the subject of five active n.a.s.a. missions, three in orbit and two on the surface. and liftoff of the atlas 5 with curiosity. seeking clues to the painter puzzle about life on mars. >> you probably heard of curiosity. nasa's rover studying climate on the ground. and the sixth mission is hoping to study mars from above and answer a 4 billion-year-old question, what made the fourth planet from the sun turn red and barren. >> it's gone from that polar desert and geological world, kind of boring rocks, to this exciting, blooming world with a hisory that includes warm, wet times, climate change, landslides, ice sheets, buried ice,

unbelievable. >> scientists believe mars may have looked a lot like earth with blue skies warm temperatures. >> we see the record in the frozen soils today. >> collecting material in the upper atmosphere will give them a better understanding over the red planet's history. >> we expect to learn how the modern mars works in detail to see its climate state, to understand how the atmosphere was lost to space, how mars may have lost a magnetic field, to take that information and map it back in time. >> the journey will be long. maven will have to travel ten months and millions of miles. but the journey and the $671 million price tag are worth it, especially if it can unlock the big question, about life of -- did life of exist on mars. chad meyers, cnn, atlanta.

close down it's hayward pediatric inpatient facility. young people requiring hospitalization will have to go to the oakland medical center. they said 99 percent of the services they provide is through outpatient services. it is just the pediatric unit that is shutting down. social media can be a really powerful force for change. we've seen it time and time again. recently a mother in san jose used social media to reach out to abc7 news anchor cheryl jennings for help. she said her daughter's fiancee eds surgery to save his sight, and the family can't afford it. so cheryl sent the message out on facebook and twitter, not expecting anything really, but what happened next turned out to be a miracle. >> reporter: this is the san jose family who desperately needed help and asked for it through social media. they had an urgent plea to save the eyesight of william fleming. he and his fiancee want him to be able to see their five children grow up. william wants to continue to work to support the family. but he has a rare eye disease that's causing him to slowly

lose his vision. it's called caritonotis. the central portion of the cornia becomes conned. it affects one in 500 people. >> it's like look through a dirty window. >> he wears hard large contact lenses so he can see, work and drive. he's a former college football player that's now a caregiver for his fiancee's brother, bo, who has cerebral palsy. >> make his breakfast in the morning, change his diaper, help with his shoes. he also has leg braces and help him get in his wheelchair. >> they talked to a number of doctors about his condition. they recommended cornia transplants. >> but those are so invasive and painful. the recovery time is a year for each eye. >> their research led them to a doctor in beverly hills who has created a procedure for correcting the damage, but it costs $18,000 and is not covered by insurance.

so the family placed an appeal for money on the giveforward.org charity website with little success. that's when her mother sent me an e-mail through facebook that said could you help me get the story for donations out. is he's a caring, loving father who is a caregiver to my son who has c.p. >> i thought let's try to get somebody out there that could help and then i thought of you guys because that's all i watch is channel 7 news. >> i put desiree's plea on my company facebook page and i said an abc7 viewer sent us this heartbreaking story asking for help. just a few days later i received an e-mail from the publicist for the doctor who william wants to perform the surgery. the e-mail said someone just saw your tweet and is interested in helping william with the cost of his procedure. i wanted to call william right away, but the doctor wanted to tell william himself so i kept the secret and went to the family home in san jose.

we skyped in while the man called dr. brian. you can see the shock on their faces as they try to process the doctor's good news. >> an anonymous donor has stepped in and was very moved by hearing about you and they are actually going to take care of the procedure for you and you will be able to have the procedure. >> oh, my god, seriously? oh, my god! that is so awesome! >> thank you! >> thank you! >> thank you so much! >> there are so many calls for help on social media that won't get answered, but in william's case somebody stepped up and said i will help you. that will make all the difference for william and his family and they are heading to los angeles soon for william's surgery. >> what do you think about that? >> i'm so, so -- this is so great! >> thank you! >> thank you, thank you! >> cheryl jennings, abc7 news.

secret. the teenage activists says they size apparel to manipulate emotions and empty wallets. their motto is real size, not lies. this afternoon from 2:00 to 3:30 they will be protesting at market and powell street where there's always a crowd at the cable car turn-around. they will ask people to sign a petitions calling for label changes at the gap and other clothing retailers. bay area players and coaches from the junior giants program were honored yesterday. san francisco hall of famer willie mccovey honored the honorees at willie mays plaza in san francisco. more than 125 willie mac award winners celebrated their achievements in confidence, integrity, leadership and teamwork. lisa argen is here now with a preview of the accuweather forecast. something we have not seen a in a long, long time. >> that comes later.

nature has washed away over the last 25 years on crown beach in almeda. as the giant pipe pours tons of wet sand on the shoreline, and bulldozers move it around to rebuild the beach to its original 1987 footprint. it is a man-made beach and, as you see, it's become very narrow. this will restore it to its original engineered footprint and everyone will get a chance to enjoy the beautiful crown and almeda beaches. >> reporter: the sand is being pumped through a temporary pipeline that extends from a barge sitting about a half-mile offshore. the material was vacuumed from the floor of the bay near angel island. in the end, 82,000 cubic yards of sand will be imported here to rebuild the beach that's a mile and a half in length. an alameda resident stopped by on his bike to take some pictures of the process. there's no trucks. i mean, it would take an

enormous number of trucks going up and down our street here to do it any other way. they are doing it right, i think. >> the reconstruction of crown beach is expected to be done by the end of this year and should last two decades or more. in almeda, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> there's a powerful storm threatening the midwest but we are finally getting the weather that we need. >> right. it won't be anything compared to what they are experiencing. in fact, several tornadoes already on the ground. we will take a look at that in illinois in a few moments. right now very quiet here. live doppler 7ld where we are not picking up rainfall but within the next 48 hours we will be. that's a switch. we are seeing confirmation now after several weeks of what looked like promising change in our pattern. it looks like it definitely is going to happen now. sutro tower camera, you can see some fog floating across the

bay. 49 los gatos. half moon bay, 55. that's where they will sit along the shoreline. mt. tam right now, it's chilly with numbers in the 40s with fog from santa rosa, napa to novato down to southern marin, as well. and in san jose we are looking at sunny conditions. another day with mainly temperatures around seasonal averages. in the low to mid-60s. that will be thanks to the sunshine. then with rain arriving on tuesday, it's going to linger. in fact, another system pushing a little bit further south into wednesday. first things first. look how dry and mild the western half of the nation is. but from the mississippi river valley all the way up to the northeast, we are looking at severe storms. so over 54 million people will be impacted by the severe storms. thunderstorms and possibility of tornadoes. here are the watch boxes where tornadoes have already been spotted on the ground. so from southern milwaukee into

illinois, take a look at that line of storms. we call these super cells. and from super cells, tornadoes will spawn. this is why we are looking at the severe weather threat throughout the rest of the day through illinois, indiana and winds to boot. from western new york, pittsburgh and philadelphia tonight and several football games will be underway with the severe weather. back home, contrasting that to the high pressure cell that continues to bring our fair and mild weather for another day and a half. then as the high retreats, we are looking at an area of low pressure and a cold front that will arrive overnight on monday. here's the timing for that system. up in the north bay, by about 9:00, you will see the rain and then it sinks south by 11:00. still up toward santa rosa. but tuesday morning commute does look soggy. in fact into the afternoon. over in the east bay we have the showers. there may be a break but into

wednesday morning here comes the next little wave of energy. this one focusing a little further sprout the peninsula into portions of the santa cruz mountains. breezy today with a nice, mild afternoon on tap. 63 fremont and 65 in san jose. morgan hill 64. the accuweather seven-day forecast. so after the mild 60s today, cooler, cloudier tomorrow. we will stay dry. here comes the rain early tuesday on and off and another shot of it on wednesday. a leftover shower on thursday. anywhere from a quarter inch to about an inch in the westest north bay looks is what we are looking at right now. then sunnier and milder friday and saturday. it's definitely welcome. >> not a lot, but better than nothing. >> right. >> thank you, lisa. let's check out sports.
