with a few clouds rolling in and cooler temperatures this morning. this afternoon, we are going to see increasing clouds with temperatures close to average. it will be drive 68 to 54. that is inland the around the bay it is the same 57 to 63. we will talk about when the rain arrives and how many chances we will get from the system. here is the news. >> thank you, mike. happening right now the bay area's first ever monday morning commute with a brand new bore in the caldecott tunnel opening to traffic over the weekend after three years construction work. amy hollyfield is near the tunnel with the story. amy? the people are coming from the new tunnel at full speed headed

to san francisco. on the right side, the people headed into the east bay, those drivers will be very happy this morning with two bores rather than the usual one. here is video from the moment over the weekend, the fourth bore opened saturday morning. first expansion from the caldecott tunnel since 1964. many drivers would say it is overdue. the 160,000 cars that travel through the tunnel each day are happy. they have been switching which bores were open for which direction of traffic in response to the demand but now on they have two bores on in both directions. this is a $417 million traffic project. today, the commute will test it out for the first time.

the bart board will meet over what bart call as mistake in the new labor contract. the board says the error gives union members more paid family leave than negotiated. the union members have voted to approve the deal that ended a bitter strike last month. officials originally rejected the provision which gives union members more paid medical leave by somehow it ended up in the final contract signed by both sides. the union says bart should honor the contract. >> happening now the search continues for victims missing after a string of tornadoes pounded the midwest. six people are dead and the hardest hit states are trying to get a handle on the damage. the storms now are headed for the mid-atlantic states. >> severe storms caused havoc in the midwest killing six people and injured dozens. the fast-moving system delivering severe door made --

suspended. >> parts of indiana took a direct hit. there are reports of storm damage in at at least 12 counties and the storm town of lebanon this starbucks was destroyed. >> all we could hear was glass shattering. we came out, the building was gone. >> the stormed slammed through the upper midwest making its way into the mid-atlantic states. >> this image of a cloud in central illinois was posted on twitter with the storm hitting a town of pekin where it is confirmed a tornado touched down. several homes were leveled bit twister. tornado watches were posted in seven states. >> aair travel is back to normal after flights were delayed by the storms. at sfo passengers gathered luggage after a united flight from chicago arrived seven hours late. the original plane was damaged in the storm. mechanics tried to fix it but the airline brought in another

fundraiser begins. >> violent weekend in san jose with three fatal shootings since friday including one involving an officer. neighbors say though heard yelling followed by gunshots on sunday morning from a house on golden lane drive. a man was shot once and pronounced dead. friday night a man was found shot in the head in a pickup truck at a strip mall parking lot. santa clara county sheriff say a deputy shot and killed a woman wielding a knife. san francisco police are investigating a shooting that left a woman dead and another critically injured. it happened early yesterday morning near 6th street. police say it started with a fight and this was a large crowd of people leashing a nightclub. >> the university of california has reached a tentative contract agreement with the union nurses,

it will hope figure out why mars lost its atmosphere. they believe the planet may have had oceans, rivers and an atmosphere similar to earth. the information could give us clues about our planet's future. >> tonight, the palo alto city council will take the first step next expanding the outdoor smoking ban. four members of the city council want to extend the ban to downtown and california and university new business districts. the proposal eliminates pockets where smoking is permits under an ordinance that took affect october 9 and make the existing ban easier to enforce. the city council meets tone at 6:30 to introduce the measure. >> electronic cigarettes could be the latest tool to help smokers kick the habit, but is it safe? the sale is largely unregulated but as we explain, that could change. >> dorothy described her sell as a part time smoker, but that is not a tobacco cigarette it is an

electronic cigarette. you get a nicotine buzz from a vapor without the tobacco found in traditional cigarettes. it is the latest in nicotine replacement products joining the patch and gum. but they are much cheaper because they are unregulated and can be sold and advertised anywhere. >> lastee, americans spent $500 million on e cigarettes, a small fraction of what they spent on traditional tobacco cigarettes but analysts say the number will triple this year at $1.7 billion in sales. dorothy says she and her success did extensive research. >> we think the harm is less than with a traditional cigarette. however, obviously, there is still risk. >> doctors say the risk could be unknown chemicals in the unregulated products. antifreeze turned up in one test. the f.d.a. will issue regulations soon and if they classify e cigarettes in the same category as tobacco it could mean users will pay significantly higher taxes.

this morning, a scene of a faith accident on 880. two people died when a car speeding hit and careened into a big rig. it hit another vehicle head on. two people died. there are major delays in our traffic. we will go to our map and show you what is happening. this is right around fifth street southbound 880 we have all but one lane shut down and that is causing delays coming away from 980 and the red is indicating bumper-to-bumper truck. elsewhere in the bay it is looking clear, tracy from dublin, over the altamont pass, 26 minutes gets you there and from antioch to conquer, it is 15 minutes. 101 southbound out of san rafael to san francisco is 17 minutes. we have the possibility of fog

heavier traffic than usual is expected in san francisco today because of a major tech conference. look at this video of the 18 hour inflation of the tent at the mascone center. 120,000 people are expected to attend the technology convention. other events include a concert on tuesday and a fundraiser for children's hospital oakland with dream force wrapping up on thursday. >> a little boy in the south bay who wanted to help typhoon victims came up with a sweet idea organizing two neighborhood bake seals with money raised going to help typhoon haiyan victims with treats donated by neighbors bringing in $900 and the parents matched the amount with a total of $1,815 going to the international rescue committee.

two people who died because of the accident. as we pull out in the nobody direction we have top speeds and from castro valley over to 238 and you have to grab the nimitz, it is not a problem, 680 southbound from walnut creek to dublin, 15 minutes and 101 is clear into san francisco and northbound 17 is not a problem but southbound at the summit we have a report of one lane taken away due to a hazard. kristen and eric? >> thank you very much, at 4:55. oaklandly teens, some as young as 13 are recovering from alcohol poisoning. the police say a group of five girls ages 13 to 15 drank a bottle of vodka at a local part and returned to a girl's home but the parents were not there. a teen passed out and the others called an adult. they took three girls to a local hospital. they will be okay and police are now looking into how the children got the vodka.
