and good wednesday morning. we begin with breaking news. that massive weather system along the eastern seaboard has 135u7bed what appears to be a tornado in north carolina. >> at least two injuries right now in moorehead city. pictures coming out of the area, showing downed trees, downed power lines. roofed ripped off buildings. minor damage at a hospital. 12 people had to be evacuated from a condo along the beach. >> and the storm that's caused this damage is affecting millions of people, stretching from south florida all the way up to maine. it's happening on one of the busiest travel days of the year. abc's tahman bradley is live in a rainy washington, with all of the delays there and holiday headache. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning, diana. good morning, john. people not already hat grandma's house are going to have a hard time getting there. it's a mess, on roads and highways and at airports across the country. it came at the worst time. a ferocious storm system on one of the busiest travel days of the year. 20 states across the east coast

and parts of the south are in the storm's path. the forecasts are awful. >> it's going to be a hectic day on tap for us. >> heading home for the halladays could be made more difficult. >> ugly weather conditions across metro atlanta. >> reporter: the powerful storm has brought freezing rain, snow and sleet. for travelers, long delays and chaos. >> i just missed my connection to albany. and i'm hyperventilating. >> new york traffic, delayed. so, they left me. and then, they tried to get me on another flight. >> reporter: 2.4 million people are expected to fly today. the second-busiest day of the year. some travelers are showing up early. dishing out big money to get home. >> it was many hundreds of dollars to change our tickets. but we had family plans in chicago that we can't miss. >> reporter: overnight, widespread damage in north carolina, near the crystal coast, after a possible tornado. roads are treacherous. snow and ice is snarling

house where they were being held and ran to a neighbor's home. >> lived in their bedrooms for approximately the last two years. and discovered a third 17-year-old female, that was also imprisoned within her bedroom. a different bedroom than the bedroom that her siblings were occupying together. >> all three sisters are malnourished and they claim they had not bathed in up to six months. the adults are under arrest, charged with suspicion of kidnapping and several counts of abuse. developing overnight, new tension between china and the united states. the u.s. sending a strong message, it doesn't buy china's latest territorial claims. china says it controls the east china sea. and all flights over it must comply to its rules. yesterday, two b-52 bombers flew in that space. china says the u.s. hysteria is unnecessary. another challenge to obama care will be decided by the

supreme court. at issue is whether employers must provide contraception to employees even when it goes against the employers religion beliefs. craft chain hobby lobby, is among the retailers challenging the law. a decision by the court will likely come next summer. the virginia lawmaker stabbed by his son is out of the hospital and sharing his sadness about the attack. creigh deeds said the mental health system failed his son, who suffered from bipolar disorder. gus deeds killed himself after attacking his father. deeds made a statement to his reporter. i will work for change. i owe that to my precious son. o.j. simpson has been handed a court defeat, losing his bid for a possible new trial. a judge rejecting the former nfl star's claims. his attorney concealed the chance of a plea bargain deal and his lawyer was incompetent. simpson is serving 9 to 32 years for kidnapping and armed robbery. there's huge reaction this

abc7 news begins with breakings news. good morning. thanks for joining us at 4:28. from alameda, firefighters have rescued one person from a stubborn fast moving apartment house fire. amy hollyfield is at the scene. amy, they are having problems? >> this is where the victims are gathered. they are doing okay. everyone got out. we are looking at seven people who got out. there are no injuries to report. here is the apartment building on fire. you can see the fire is about out. it is smoldering. there is a hotspot or two that is not quite out. mostly, the fire is out. it is under control. here video of what it looks like moments ago.

the fire call came if at 2:47 on bridges avenue. a woman told me she woke up to the sound of glass breaking and she realized the building was on fire. she started telling her neighbors they needed to get out. two residents have told me a mentally unstable man lives in one of the four units and he has said "i'm going to burn it down." she believe he is to blimp we have seen police handcuff a man and put him in a police car. i have not been able to get further details but officials say they don't know. they still gathering information. there are many questions to be answered. the bottom line as far as the emergency is, the fire is out and everyone is okay. the people do believe they have lost everything.
