now charged as an adult with two felonies hate crime. >> i don't want to be too harsh just because people do dumb things, you know. especially when they're teenagers. i think i'd have him as a juvenile, so for sasha, there's still room for giving amid all the thanks this holiday. >> still painful. there's a wild crime spree this morning in east san jose. police shot and killed a stabbing suspect after they say he tried to ram an officer with a stolen car. the crime spree started at a home where the unidentified suspect stabbed several people. then he carjacked a van on north jackson avenue. the van got on to i 680 going the wrong direction. the police chased the van off mayberry road and the driver trying to run them down.

that's when officers shot him. >> was there any return fire by the police? >> we don't know. just like five, six times in a row shot that's it. >> a police department spokesperson says an officer shot the suspect at least once killing him. he's not been identified. the stabbing victims all suffered nonlife threatening injuries. this mangled car plunge off and rolled down the hillside in san mateo county. a special crane was brought in after daylight to hoist the car back on to the roadway. the crash happened after midnight on highway 92. one person managed to climb up to the roadway. a coast guard helicopter was used to rescue three others. the chp says drugs, alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors. this is really turning into the years o deal before meals. the shopping season started earlier than ever with many combining a day of shopping and

celebrating thanksgiving. heather is out with the bargain hunters. we're waiting in line at one store to open in san mateo. hi, heather. >> we are outside the toys "r" us in san mateo. the doors opened promptly at 5:00. with people having been waiting in line since about 2:30 this afternoon. they're being allowed in in groups of 50 at a time. the manager says the next 50 are allowed in once that front entrance way is clear. they're just trying to keep things safe. the line just exploded in this last half hour leadinging up to five and goes way back past another store back there. the manager thinks there would be probably around 500 people in line by the time they opened the doors, but if seems like -- there is at another store, a k-mart, that has been open all day.

k-mart says there's nothing new. it's been doing that for 20 years. the san mateo k-mart opened this morning at 6:00 a.m. and will not close again until 11:00 tomorrow night. within that time frame, there are three separate sale periods with different deals for each one. there was a steady stream of shoppers when we were thereto in the middle of the day. no frenzy, no long lines and absolutely no regrets from people who made the choice to buy a prepared meal to heat and serve or eat out and use the day instead to shop calmly. >> they're the only ones open on the day and we get to get an early start on our christmas shopping. i like that it doesn't have the super big crowds. we don't get here when they're first opened or the 7:00 p.m., but we can get good deals on stuff. >> we hate 20 million people across the aisles like walmart. >> i was online last night and then looking through oh, i'm not sure if i'm going to go the

whole black friday, i'm not a fan and when i saw they were open today, i was like, perfect and then i called and they said it wasn't crazy busy, so here we are getting our christmas tree. >> here at this toys "r" us, the manager says they opened at 8 clk p.m. on thanksgiving evening. this thanksgiving at 5:00. three hours earlier in part to make up for six fewer shopping days between thanksgiving and christmas. and is it worth it for the shoppers? well, the very first man in line who got here again around 2:15 or so, he says it's absolutely worth it because he estimates he's going to save $150 on three days. live in san mateo, abc 7 news. thank you. shoppers have been in line since last friday to snap up bargains at the best buy. here is a live look at the store that opens in less than an hour and you can see that line is

long. all these people in line for door busters on things such as big screen tvs and smart phones. best buy joins a long list of retailers opening earlier than ever. best buy opens at 6:00. six hours earlier than last year. we'll be there live. and with a holiday deals starting for the first time ever on thanksgiving at so many retailers, now, we're hearing the backlash from the public. across the country, more workers than other are on the clock tonight as big box and department stores are pushing black friday into thanksgiving thursday. even the die hard shoppers say the early kickoff is cumbersome. >> 7:00, 6:00 is too early. open at midnight when everybody's done with their family and going to bed and we can go shopping. >> they're finisheded with their families at midnight for sure. walmart, k-mart, macy's and

around san francisco this morning. volunteers from the salvation army drove around the city delivering turkey dinners and others in need who aren't able to get out of their house for a hot meal. in all, some 3500 meals were available. also, plenty of busy people at the san francisco food bank. over 100 volunteers spent hours sorting through barrels that were filled with donated food. the food bank needed the barrels so it could send them back out to stores to collect more donations. it wasn't just families that were volunteering. several dozen bar and beverage workers were helping out. >> this is very much about people having fun and people cutting loose and nice to remember occasionally there is something a little more serious going on. >> not everybody was sorting food. this group was repacking bulk rice into smaller portions while the thanksgiving food drive is

over, the christmas food drive is is now just beginning. the food bank is behind in its fund raising goal and is in need of donations. one place where there were a few people today were the airports. there were a few lines to check in. maybe this is the day to travel. very little wait at the security line and the flights, travelers didn't seem to mind traveling on thanksgiving day. >> we thought it would be easier than trying to get there yesterday and everybody was okay with having thanksgiving tomorrow instead. >> our daughter was supposed to work today, so we figured it's a good time to head back, plus our other son is coming in tomorrow, so we're just sort of splitting times. >> it's not going to stay this quiet for too long. more than 120,000 passengers went through sfo yesterday, so the rush to get back begins tomorrow and officials say more than a million travelers will go through the airport between last weekend and this coming sunday. what kind of football team practices on thanksgiving?

thanksgiving has fallen on hanukkah, making this a double celebration for some. you're looking at live pictures of the lighting in union square and they are just getting set to light the manor ra. it is part of a tradition started 39 years ago by bill graham. a marketing manager in massachusetts came up with a new mash up word for today. thanksgivukkah. experts say based on the current greg or yan and jewish calend s calendars, they won't fall on the same day again for more than $70,000 years. >> pretty impressive. the macy's thanksgiving day parade made its way through the streets of new york city today. the big balloons were allowed to fly, but had to stay close to the ground. this year, they were five feet lower than normal. even then, sudden gusts made the
