4:00 pm
again on fourth down and won it. >> bob: based on how this has gone who know what is we might be in for? >> rod: it's rivalry weekend. you're going to get things like this. this is awesome. >> bob: now the clock is not a factor. now you're just trying to score. what do you expect offensively from georgia tech here? they have been more pass heavy than you'll probably ever see this offense be? >> rod: i think we'll get only passes when they have to on third down. i think we'll get more of the fullback inside. a little bit more of the toss sweep or something to get to the edge because the option to the edge has been a little too risky for them and not all that successful. >> bob: well, they'll maybe run a trick play. synjyn days with a throwback, quarterba quarterback-to-quarterback and vad lee almost lucky to let that go through his hands as damian swann stays home. >> rod: swann bass where he needed to be. toss sweep. we've seen it a number of times.
4:01 pm
age the throw back gets them nothing. damian swann in perfect position. >> bob: 2011 synjyn days was a quarterback in this system, so obviously they feel comfortable with his ability to throw the ball but the trick play doesn't work. second and ten. another trick play, an end around. cory dennis and down to the 13 yard line. >> rod: great, great running by smelter. he could have been stopped back near the line of scrimmage but watch him use his block. he sets this up and cuts in behind his blocker. forces the guy to miss. there wasn't a lot there. he made that happen. >> bob: first and ten at the 13.
4:02 pm
out wide to days, inside the 10. moved the pile down to the 6 yard line before he goes out. >> rod: it's been all perimeter. toss, sweep, reverse. anything in the playbook. now you have them going and thinking about the edge do you pop one back inside? if you're georgia you have to be thinking about that. >> bob: georgia tech can get a first down inside the 3 yard line. and sims has been effective up the middle. up the middle goes lee, first down and goal.
4:03 pm
>> bob: first and goal just outside the 1. vad lee tries to do it himself and nothing doing. he might have lost a yard. it'll be second down and goal. enter floyd, came through and anticipated it perfectly. >> rod: they brought the pressure -- just watch everything you see here, linebackers all focused on getting inside. good anticipation by the georgia linebacking crew. >> bob: lost at least a half
4:04 pm
yard. now it's second down and goal. >> rod: you have to go outside if you're georgia tech? >> bob: vad lee changing the play at the line, lee will try it again at the goal line. he's in. yellow jackets touchdown. >> rod: that's vad lee. he checked to that play. he checked to this and changed the blocking because of what he saw and got a great block up front by his right guard, shaquille mason and dragged herrera into the end zone. >> bob: overtime number one, touchdown by georgia tech.
4:05 pm
now the dogs will have a chance to answer. >> rod: i'll tell you this, though, georgia has protected mason. but when they haven't it's been one guy that's been a problem for them. that guy, jeremiah attaochu. four sacks on the day. he has been the pressure on that georgia offense coming from every angle. senior day he's had a heck of a performance. >> bob: now georgia's offense is ready to go but the georgia tech cheerleaders -- delay tactics. >> rod: if you're georgia, you find 45 and you make sure you got a guy or two -- a couple of guys. >> bob: start with three. here's gurley getting outside. gurley inside the 20. out of bounds at about the 18
4:06 pm
yard line. maybe the 17 yard line. that's a gain of eight on first down for todd gurley. >> rod: really good start for you. give you lots of options on second down and short thousand. you can pound it and gurley is really your guy. >> bob: in motion. trying to go with gurley again right up the middle. first down and more. first and goal for the dogs at the 7. >> rod: as much as we talk about gurley, that left side of that li line, lee and andrews doing a great job. >> bob: gurley again why not. he's in for the touchdown and georgia is a point after away for the equalizer and forcing another overtime.
4:07 pm
>> rod: that didn't take long. >> bob: vad lee has probably been the best offensive player that georgia tech has had and todd gurley is probably the best all-around football player in the game. >> rod: yeah, dueling. i think gurley has been spectacular in the second half. and the overtime. >> bob: to complete the point and they do and we'll step aside for just a moment so todd gurley, keeps georgia's hope as live against georgia tech in the rivalry game. okay, ladies, grab a knee. i got somebody i want you all to meet. he's a real leader. and he's gonna help us turn this thing around in the second half. aflac. aflac. aflac, aflac. aflac, aflac. aflac! that's what i'm talking about! aflac. aflac.
4:08 pm
you feel me?! [ all ] yeah! bring it in! [ male announcer ] if you get sick or injured, we do everything we can to help you get back in the game. aflac. an official partner of the heisman trophy. final in madison, wisconsin, falls to penn state. the nittany lyons scoring 31 points. wisconsin had allowed 36 points combined in six home games this season. that bcs bowl berth is probably
4:09 pm
done for the badgers. >> bob: robert, it is undoubtedly done for the badgers. a terrific win for bill o'brien's team this season. you go to madison with a bcs bowl bid possibly hanging in the balance. you get a road win over the badgers. >> rod: that's an amazing accomplishment for penn state. >> bob: that's special stuff for penn state. so now overtime number two begins with georgia with the football and they will keep it on the ground. back-to-back touchdowns for gurley. >> rod: you got to get pressure off the edge here but look at the cross blocking up front. great job by dallas lee, number 64, the left guard and david andrews, 61.
4:10 pm
they've blocked a huge opening for gurley. that was fantastic. >> bob: can georgia tech answer? 50 yards on four carries and two touchdowns in the two overtimes now for todd gurley. >> rod: you're going to get the pressure here from the outside. but watch the double blocking you get there and then you just get gurley getting in behind him. i mean ray great job by dallas lee and then a good block also by gates for the tackle and huge hole and pressure that came from thomas meant nothing. >> bob: so now can the georgia defense get the stop? 13th game in his career with 100 yards or more for gurley gur. but a handoff and plenty of room for david sims.
4:11 pm
a gain of 9 1/2 just outside the 15 yard line. >> rod: back to their roots. using the fullback. you know, paul johnson doesn't have a laminated card. doesn't have a fancy signal in the play system, just grabs a guy like old school and sends in the play. mess messenger. >> bob: first down carry. tripped him up and georgia tech could get another first down inside the 1 but now the field shrinks and have to have a touchdown to extend the game. >> rod: you know, they've not run the option in a long, long time and they tried to go to the outside. it's been the toss sweep.
4:12 pm
>> bob: godhigh lined up as the h-back right. he's the motion man. instead, it's david sims. a yard to the 10 yard line. second down and long. drew made another stop. turned down 50 other scholarship offers to go to georgia but this is really the first year he's emerged as a starter and he has been an impact player today. >> rod: they get a lot of guys at georgia that are top recruits turn down a lot of places, a lot of talent. >> bob: got a lot coming next year. >> rod: yep, young team. >> bob: now they run the option. the toss to godhigh. makes a move at the 10. cuts it inside at the 5 and he's out of bounds at about the 3.
4:13 pm
amarlo herrera ran him out. >> rod: what a great, great run by godhigh. he had to freeze a guy to get to the edge because this thing was pretty strung out. watch him free the guy right here and get to the corner. and now they have -- now they have a shot on a third and short. >> bob: georgia tech can also pick up a first down. it's third down and two from the 3 as they get inside the 1 yard line they get a fresh set of downs. a toss to godhigh again. he'll be buried back at the 5, maybe the 6 yard line. now it's fourth down. leonard floyd, josh harvey-clemons combine on the stop for the georgia defense. >> rod: and talk about support from the corner. swann does a nice job of beating the block, setting the edge and
4:14 pm
allowing his teammates come from the inside out to help him out. >> bob: fourth down and five from the 6. do or die for georgia tech. mark richt wants a time-out on the georgia sideline. so the dogs want to talk things over on defense. the last time you were down in close, the georgia tech offense and they had a had to have it play where you were wondering whether or not they could do it they got an easy touchdown on a slant to deandre smelter. is this a clear passing situation for the georgia tech offense? maybe using a height advantage out on the edge with one of the wide receivers? >> rod: yeah, i think they will throw and be looking for deandre smelter or darren waller. waller is 6'5" and try to spread him as far across the field as they can because this ball is on the hash.
4:15 pm
yeah, they don't have confidence in their option game running to the edge. running inside is the only thing but that's risky here. that's how they got to this overtime though inside lee got the touchdown. gurley came right back, matched that one. and then gurley started the second overtime with a huge run and got them the touchdown and now georgia tech's on fourth down. >> bob: fourth and five from the 6. lee in the pistol. he'll throw. end zone, catch an the car recommend back outside the goal line and incomplete and the dogs survive and win it in overtime.
4:16 pm
what a game and what a comeback by georgia. agony for georgia tech. >> rod: well, this was a shot. he had something there. but what a great job. it looked like it was wilson who got his hands on it and knocked it up in the air. and that destroyed the play for georgia tech because wilson made a great, great play to get his hands on it. >> bob: what a terrific game and a game both teams can be proud of. maximum effort but georgia wins it in overtime. coming up espn rivalry series presented by gopro going. ucla and. sc for the victory bell, for rod gilmore and. >> quint: i'm bob wischusen. so long from atlanta.
