abc7 news begins with breaking news. >> flames are erupting from the street in oakland with water gushing from a fire hydrant. can not step the fire caused by a bust the underground natural gas line. >> thanks for joining us. >> sky 7 was over the scene of the gas-fed fire that erupted through cracks in the pavement at 8:30 this morning, and prompted evacuation of three homes and triggered a shelter-in-place if part of the neighborhood. that fire is at gulf links road

and our reporter, matt keller, is covering the story and joins us. matt? >> first, we will check, first, with the cold snap in the bay area which is just amazing. meteorologist, mike niccos joints us with the latest. >> a morning of near record lows. it was cooler in the east bay valley. mid-20's in concord and san ramon and fairfield and 29 in antioch and 28 in livermore the same temperature in san jose unlike yesterday, though, not a record the 29 in mountain view and frosty cold in hayward and also as you head toward oakland, san lenadro, san mateo, 21 degrees, 40 in san francisco. we will talk about what is going to happen moving failure, notice not so many of us are under the freeze warning tonight just the north bay valley, the east bay valley and the santa clara valley, so another increased risk of hyperthermia and damage

which is possible for plants, exposed pipes and temperatures from 10:00 tonight until 9:00 tomorrow morning. >> the bay area cold independence is now in the 7th day and we now seeing a frosty conditions literally changing people's routines as well as shopping habits. our reporter is joining us from livermore with that story. >> attitude, some embraced it at the beginning saying it feels festive. others are still saying that but we are noticing an attitude shift of people who are just getting sick of this cold weather. with forecast on the ground and temperatures below freezing, again, some bay area residents say they have had enough of this weather. >> i am ready for it to go away. i walk each day and i was out here and it is just really cold the. >> a popular walking trail in livermore was empty this morning. those who did brief the coldcy it fells a bit honeyly outside.

>> not so crowded this morning as usual. i live by here and walk the trail often. >> sporting goods stores say sales of cold weather gear are up which is nice for the bottom line but the owners of dom's is from california and he and his customers are ready for a change. >> had h have to keep going. i could take some warmer weather myself. they are tires of the cold. we live in california to be warm, not cold. they want cold we go to the mountains the. >> rather than the mountains, come to downtown livermore where there is snow. it was brought in over the weekend for kids to play in but it is still here and not melting and many are calling that an example of just being too cold. this is "enough is enough," reporting live from livermore for abc7 news.

>> we have break news right new in lafayette, hazardous material experts with the all clear a short time ago after a potential radioactive object. employees discovered a bright green box in their parking lot and it had a radioactive warning label on it, with radiation detection showing the box did not pose danger and was some kind of ground penetrating radar that may have been stolen. they contacted its owner. >> black ice is investigated as the cause of a bad accident on northbound 280. we were on the scene at black mountain road win that happens. c.h.p. says we have to be so careful as we travel the icy roads and take it slow and avoid slamming on the brakes. >> another round of flight delays this morning as mineta san jose airport but not because of weather around the country. >> instead, the de-icing equipment broke down and two

road happening now in oakland. this is because of a vault fire underground and this is at gulf links road and we are at the scene. what is going on, matt? >> it is quite amazing do see fire on the road. check it out. it is on the corner right here with pg&e cruise working on finding where the leak is to cap it off. i was told by pg&e that it was a gas line break that turned interest a gas leak. check out this video from sky 7, firefighters got the call before 8:30 this morning reporting there was an underground fire if this area and this is what they found. the flames shooting up with six homes evacuated and all other residents were told to shelter if place. roads were blocked off in the neighborhood. a resident was frightened. this has the potential to be a big disaster. >> asking what was going on and

he said, it was a gas leak. i was like, my god, a gas leak, and all i could think of was san bruno. my 93-year-old mom is in the house and i am getting her out. >> everyone will think san bruno but right new we have everything under criminal. >> firefighters say the incident is completely different. that was a transition line with 400 pounds p.s.i. and this is a distribution line bringing gas to homes with only 40 to 50 pounds p.s.i. and the college is nearby but officials are not concerned because it is at the far end of the property. teachers and students students f are told to stay indoors but not evacuated. we found several layers of roadblocks getting here so the area around here is blocked off. the fire hydrant is damaged and was spewing water. east bay mud workers are making

sure the water supply is available for firefighters and allowing the peg truck to get by. pg&e, again, is here on the scene and they have told us they have a timeline when they hope to have this gas line leak and they are looking for the cause of the break. when they fine -- find it they hope they can have it fixed within two hours. >> in south africa, a grand international tribute for nelson mandela was underway in johannesburg with a joyful crowd dancing in the stadium as president obama honored the legacy. our reporter has more on the celebration for a man who changed the world. >> the world descended on johannesburg to celebrate the life of nelson mandela. tens thousands singing and dancing in a downpour. that is a sign in after a. >> when it rains it means your

>> back to agree news you can see fire burning through the pavement. this has been going on since 8:39 this morning when a 4" plastic gas line ruptured and pg&e is at the scene and half a dozen homes were evacuated and folks is been ordered for shelter in place. pg&e thinks they can get this or hope they can get to in the next couple of hours. no one has been hurt. apparently this is just something they don't want anyone to get near. avoid the area. >> the auto industry has the first female c.e.o., general motors has named the product development chief as the next c.e.o., a graduate of dan ford school of business and in charge

breaking news story in oakland hills. the flames are coming from an underground gas fire. you can see the flames are shooting up through the cracks in the road. what is happening now is pg&e crews say that a 4 itch -- 4 itch gas line ruptured and residents have been ordered to shelter in place. there are no injuries. they hope to have it fixed in two hours of the right now they don't want anyone near the area. >> very dangerous. now, look at this, this is a christmas tree all wrap up in a pretty bow, someone is spreading holiday cheer a miniature christmas tree in the bay near san rafael on a white wrapped box with stripes. the box has small solar panels

cloverdale. tonight, most of the bay is going to be above freezing in our valleys and parts of the santa clara valley where we have another freeze warn and we are warmer overnight, and another night increased risk of hyperthermia and damage to the pets and pipes and plants. the jet stream is moving to the southeast and it will take the cold air and move it east of the rockies and this high pressure days over. keep the storm track away from us and moderate our temperatures low-to-mid fists today, and mid-50 tomorrow and 60's on thursday and more dominant in the forecast on saturday, sunday, and monday with temperatures slightly warmer-than-average. >> thank you, mike. we will head back to our breaking news story going on since 8:30 this morning in oakland hills area. you do not see this every day. this is a fire burning through credit because it is being fed by a natural gas line.
