cold and another freeze warning in effect. this is a live look from our mount tam cam. a full week of this kind of weather in the books, some good news tonight that this could be the last freeze warning of this cold snap. good evening. i'm dan ashley. carolyn johnson is off. we are enduring yet another bitter night. meteorologist sandhya patel begins our coverage with a look at how low it is going tonight. sand yaw? >> it is going low enough to where you are going to feel. it it is a widespread area and let's check out live doppler 7hd. we are seeing high clouds. there is a sign of hope out there. check out the 24-hour temperature change up 2 to 11 dries -- degrees.

milder air is getting in trained. we have freeze rn whattings and you can see the hard freeze warning. it runs until 9:00 a.m. pipes can burst and there is an increased risk of hypothermia. northern santa clara valley and so bring your frost sensitive plants in. we had two records that were fight. moffet field and 27 in santa cruz. the cold is getting old. there is hope and changes are coming. >> thanks very much. >> abc7 news reporterly is a you amin gulezian is live in sunnyvale at the national guard armory. >> dan, it is true. this shelter behind me has been open in the daytime as well when it is usually closed. but hopefully this last night of freezing temperatures have just about caused everyone to scramble.

>> suzanne and her kids are glad to be someplace warm tonight. being homeless is never easy. but in freezing temperatures -- >> it has been horrible. i didn't think the weather would get this cold in california. >> now that the freeze warning has been extestimonieded they are paying -- extended they are paying to run the rec center at longer hours. no one will be turned away tonight. >> the bone chilling cold. >> there were seven weather-related deaths since the cold snap started. and they are working nonstop to keep people out of the cold. >> since the cold snap it has been crazy. >> most of the time they are easy fixes. >> the bulk of the repairs are due to lack of maintenance. you don't change the oil in your car, your car will quit.

>> they are getting ready for another morning of sanding. >> they have some water going underneath it and condensation forms and therefore it is creating the black ice. >> the complications that the cold brings are causing the same september meant to spread. >> for now, wishful thinking will have to do. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> meantime, the mother of a homeless man found dead in hayward believes that more could have been done to save her son. 50-year-old joe white was found dead on sunday and possibly from hypothermia. he was in a courtyard behind the foothill boulevard safe way in the freezing cold. authorities say he was wearing just shoes, a hooded sweatshirt and shorts. he was second on the waiting list for a permanent housing program called rapid rehousing. the cold came up before a room opened up. >> he was a human being waiting to get help.

he was trying to survive just like all of these other people are trying to survive. >> they help people on the striets with cold and food, but it does president want to make it too easy to stay out there in the cold and not seek shelter. authorities say two adults did an excellent job keeping four kids safe while they were stranded in freezing temperatures overnight. it is remarkable how thisy were able to survive. here are the parents, two cousins and two parents arriving at a nevada hospital. on sunday their jeep flipped off the road northwest of tahoe. the temperature fell below zero the last two nights and they were out in the elements. the family heated rocks and used them to keep their jeep warm. very clever. doctors say there are some minor exposure issues, but no signs of frostbite. they should all be just fine. in santa rosa a protest was loud and confrontational.

before it was over, there were arrests. demonstrators are angry a deputy is returning to work after the shooting of 13-year-old andy lopez who was carrying a toy gun that looked like the real thing. abc7 news reporter john alston is live in santa rosa with the story. a lot of emotion there to it -- tonight. >> yes. it was supposed to be a simple march and instead one person was arrested on charges of assaulting officers and a second man was picked up on charges of obstructing >> despite a large police presence, the angry crowd was able to get right up to the front door of the sonoma county jail. banging on the windows and breaking glass according to the sheriff's department. inside was a fellow protestor arrested hours earlier. >> and we want to be here to greet him when he is released and show him we back him and support him. >> protesters identified him as ramone cairo. >> we pay to protect and not

to murder us. >> he was among several demonstrators who marched to a city council meeting protesting the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy by a sonoma deputy. they say he punched one officer in the eye and hit another with a wooden cross. sky 7hd captured him being lead away. there was a large commotion outside as the demonstrators tried to rush back toward the council chambers. the group is angry that the sonoma deputy is back on the job after october's fatal shooting. 13-year-old andy lopez was carrying a bb gun that looks like an ak47. the deputy opened fire saying the boy made a quick turn with what appeared to be a real weapon. >> the fact that the to be back on duty? >> he will be doing administrative work. john alston, abc7 news.

new details tonight, the man shot by santa clara county sheriff deputy has died. sky 7hd shows the scene near saratoga and mcfarland avenue. that's near the headquarters of roku. there are reports of a man who appears to be suicidal. at least one shot was fired. two deputies suffered nonlife-threatening injuries, but again the man has died. the oakland city council has agreed to settle a claim by an iraq war veteran who was beaten by a police officer during an occupy protest. the city will now pay army veteran s abogi $645,000. he sued saying police ruptured his spleen when they hit him with a baton during a protest during november of 2011. also, a woman who is seven months pregnant becomes the target in a string of armed robberies in the east bay. she sharing details of that

experience with us. the robbery happened around 9:30 yesterday morning a block from the bart station in berkeley. the woman said a man ran up to her and pulled a gun out on her. she is seven months pregnant and demanded her backpack. she told him she was pregnant, but he didn't care. >> i was stunned and shocked that it was happening to me. the the first indig nation that something was happening. >> police believe the suspects may have committed several robberies in the south berkeley and north oakland area and the black 2009 toyota venza and police #r* looking for these guys. livermore police arrested a golf pro who is accused of molesting boys he was teaching. 31-year-old andrew nizbit 31-year-old andrew nizbit faces 6

the golf course while he was working. police say he molested two boys and they are interviewing others. police at the golf course say they are stunned to hear about this. >> oh man. that surprises the hell out of me. >> i thought i knew him. i really do feel like i have good radar on that stuff. that just blows me away. i'm sick. i'm sick to hear about that. >> that golf pro had a beg reputation. the charges come after the pga northern california section announced nizbit would receive an award for his work with kids. pg&e says it could take days to figure out why a gas line broke and started an underground fire today. a bizarre scene. you can see flames coming through the cracks on the street after a four-inch nap gas line line -- natural gas line ruptured on fontain street near the oakland zoo.

authorities evacuated six homes. the line was capped within a few hours and everyone was back home. as you can see a very wild and unusual picture. fire coming from beneath the ground like that. two other gas leaks in the bay area are also capped tonight. one in brentwood happened when a construction crew hit a gas line. there they are working to repair it. and crews are fixing a line at the port of oakland. a construction crew there accidentally knocked over a pole causing the leak. you. the world bid farewell to nelson mandela during a national international tribute. a joyful crowd in south africa stood in the pouring rain. thousands gathered to honor the man who lead south africa out of decades of racial segregation. current and former leaders from nearly 100 nations were there to pay their p ares. ares. >> he makes me want to be a better man.

either. some developing news. a new meningitis scare on a uc campus. uc riverside employee is in the hospital after testing positive for men anyone. >> ties. about a dozen -- for men anyone. >> ties. 20 students have been in contact with the employee and they will be treated with antibiotics. this comes about a month after four students came down with meningitis at uc santa barbara and princeton on the other side of the country is in the process of vaccinating all students after a meningitis outbreak there. a bipartisan budget plan announced today would keep the u.s. funded through 2015. meaning no government shutdowns during that period. if passed, the budget will include a number of spending cuts while raising fees for other parts of the budget. democrats compromise by giving up an employment benefit extension -- an unemployment benefit extension and the tea party has voiced opposition

we have poor air quality. spare the air alerts in effect and poor air quality for the north bay and inland and east bay. that means of course no wood burning. you have to turn up the heat or put an extra blanket on the bed. the exploratorium camera is looking good. the temperature right now is quite comfortable. 46 degrees in san francisco. the upper 30s oakland and redwood city is 40. 36 degrees in los gatos. some of you will still feel the chill from the emeryville camera and looking back ready too the tower. temperatures are down to freezing in santa rosa and novato. you have fallen below freezing in fare -- fairfield. from our sutro tower camera and looking at san francisco and here is a look at the forecast. freeze warnings, frost advisories rue it on through tomorrow morning. spare the air again tomorrow and milder weather thursday through the weekend. you are not seeing things. the weather will get better. as we head toward the latter

part of the workweek and into the weekend. tomorrow morning in the midto upper 20s when you leave home. low 30s around the bay in san jose. when you wake up, don't forget your coats and your heavy winter gear. you are going to need it. we will be dealing with those freezing, cold conditions. as you look at the temperature trend 28 for tomorrow morning and the numbers are going up through the weekend. we will be back up to where we should be this time of year. and i was hoping for some rain. still not seeing anything until maybe 10 days out. strong blocking ridge here. it will continue to divert the storm track wall to the north of us. we will continue to see temperatures slowly moderating and a little milder each day through the weekend. and here is a look at your highs. we will go from chilly to cool tomorrow. the temperatures will be in the low to upper 50s. 60 in santa cruz and sunshine for you. the accu-weather seven-day forecast and some frosty areas on thursday morning. but the temperatures will come up for your friday. you well start to feel the difference. daytime and nighttime for your weekend.
