morning. when oakland crews got to the scene, heavy smoke was coming from the house. the cause sunder investigation and we will continue to stay on the story. breaking news overnight, a fatal crash shut down northbound interstate 280, highway 885 interchange for nearly three hours this morning in cupertino. the driver of this red mazda lost control, went off the highway, struck a tree shortly before midnight. the driver has been identified as 26-year-old from daly city. the chp is trying to determine exactly what happened and they are looking for any witnesses to come forward. the freeway reopened around 2:30. we now know the identity of the driver killed by a suspected drunk driver in this fiery crash in livermore yesterday. cell phone video shows the fire sparked when a hummer slammed into a jeep cherokee on westbound 580 around 10 yesterday morning. 29-year-old reed whitaker of livermore died inside the cherokee. we learned whitaker worked as an emt at highlands hospital in

oakland. the ch says the driver who hit him was drunk. officers have arrested that man, 53-year-old man. b.a.r.t. and its two largest unions go back to the table this morning with a federal mediator, hoping to set their disputes over a costly benefit that somehow got into the new contract. meantime, passengers are taking a clear stand on transit strikes. abc7 news reporter, matt keller, is live at the fremont b.a.r.t. station. matt? >> reporter: yeah, these b.a.r.t. riders went through two strikes this year and may have influenced the result of the latest fields poll. this morning, check it out, ask californian it is transit workers should be allowed to strike. state wide, it was split. 47% said yes and 44% said no. near the bay area, mart gin grew significantly, only 41% said yes while majority of 52% said no the contract is still unsettled between b.a.r.t. and its unions

live from the scene at the top of the hour. large fire in santa rosa left three people looking for a new place to stay. at least four buildings caught fire off highway 101 near todd road. the powerlines came down this is video from sky 7 hd. officials advise drivers to stay away from the area until they got it under control around 8:00. fire officials kept one engine at the scene all night to keep an eye out for flare ups. so far, no issues reported. a story you will see only on abc7 news, an investigation is under way after a woman dialed san mateo county child support health number but somehow connected to a phone sex hotline. sis sill ya lee thought she had misdialeded number posted on san mateo county's child support website so she double checked it and dialed again and got the same-sex line. >> welcome to america's hottest talk line. ladies to talk to interesting and exciting guys free, press 1 now. >> i was very disappointed that

>> reporter: jaden was just 1 pound 2 ounces when he was born at a central coast hospital and immediately, blanca was confronted by a gut-wrenching choice. >> i was told he only had a 30% chance of survival. and i was asked at the time if i wanted to let him go. because he was so critical, but i refused. >> reporter: boy was transferred to lucile packard children's hospital in stanford, suffering from breathing trouble and bleeding in his brain, complications of premature birth. >> he was critically ill, but it wasn't that many ago that babies that the able wouldn't survive. >> reporter: today, jaden still needs some oxygen and a feeding tube but his doctor says the infant is thriving and could be home by christmas when he was supposed to make his grand entrance. >> that's exciting and i can't wait to have him home.

it's been a long road, but it's worth it it's totally worth t. >> reporter: mom has already purchased some christmas gifts. in palo alto, john alston, abc7 news. the latest recipient of the breakthrough prize in life sciences award will take part in a symposium today at the uc san francisco mission bay campus. six scientists each got $3 million in the awards that were presented at a private award last night in silicon valley. that's almost triple the size of the nobel prize. some hollywood stars like glenn close, conan o'brien and kevin spayscy joined heavy hitters from silicon valley to celebrate science as those awards were handed out at nasa ames research center. the prize money is donated by the likes of facebook head mark zuckerberg, google chief, sergei britain and google tech investor, yuri milliner. >> pushing them all the time.

new this morning concerns ver police are investmenting what led to the stabbing of at least three people outside the broncos/chargers game last night. it happened as they left sports authority field at mile high one of the victims is in critical condition. the other two are in stable. a fourth person may have been stabbed but left the scene before plirs got there. investigators it started as a fight between fans in the parking lot.
