let's start with a quick first look at the whether with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, we did have some numbers below freezing early this morning, but those numbers getting fewer and fewer as our air mass continues to warm, our stagnate air mass. we aren't picking up the cloud cover here, but we have a lot of haze out there, especially in the south bay and east bay. numbers in 309s and 40s the next hour and then well into the 50s by noontime. talking temperatures into the 60s and beyond by about 4:00. so the numbers will climb to near 70 around santa cruz. we do have an abrupt change to this warming trend. a big cool down and maybe some showers in the 7 day forecast coming up. carolyn. >> thanks, lisa. >> south africa has said good-bye to nelson mandela this morning. we have all the details now from this emotional farewell.

still functioning and operating and overheating, mixing with the chemicals that were in the machinery. and created gaseous-based environment. >> the smell, i mean, when it could do to you. and i have a six-year-old grand daughter and a three-month-old. >> so you were worried. >> yeah. >> residents were advised to shelter in place as a precaution. officials say the vapor was contained around 8:15 last night. no one was injured in the incident. developing news this morning, police are investigating following a shooting that's left one person dead and another injured in san francisco. it happened just after 11:00 last night near almeda boulevard and ellsworth street alongside interstate 280. the victim died at the scene. the second person was rushed to the hospital. no word on suspects or a motive. the contra costa county sheriff's department is

investigating a fatal shooting that happened early this morning outside a home in rodeo. a call reporting gunshots came in around 1:00 this morning. when deputies arrived at the scene, they found a man lying in the front yard. that was on viewpoint boulevard. they say he did not live at the home. they said the 25-year-old man was sitting in a car with someone when they were approached by three people. one of them opened fire, killing the victim. a young girl from oakland is brain dead this morning after going into surgery to have her tonsils removed. now her family is demanding answers. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has more with what happened. >> these are pictures from the 13-year-old girl and her mother first arrived at the children's hospital on monday. her daughter was apprehensive, but the mother said she convinced her things would be fine. i told her the surgery is to make you better.

her daughter went in to have her tonsils removed. doctors said it was to help her with sleep apnea. but in recovering she had disturbing complications. >> she had stuff coming out of her mouth and they gave me a cup. they said catch it so we can measure it. >> the grandmother and a nurse at the kaiser oakland hospital, she said she was surprised by when she called a lack of attention by oakland children's hospital staff. >> i went in and i said is this normal? do you guys find this to be normal? and they said i don't really know, and then i said well then get a doctor. >> in the last day she took a turn for the worst. >> my daughter went to cardiac arrest and died. they brought her back and now she's brain dead. >> they were shocked. what's worse is now hospital staff is asking her to consider removing her from life support.

>> they have a social worker following me around all day long asking me, do you have any other family that needs to see her? like trying to put a rush on it. >> they are demanding the hospital to conduct an investigation to find out how she could have died following a seemingly routine surgery. an oakland children's hospital representative was not available. a spokesperson provided this prepared response. " we are very sad about this outcome, about what happened to her but at this point i have no information on the details of the surgery. we will certainly investigate what happened. in any surgery there are risks, and there can be unexpected and unanticipated complications." the family said they do not want to remove her from life support. in the newsroom, abc7 news. daily city officials rescued >> a california highway patrol office who are saved a young boy from a burning van back in 2007 has received a special honor. he keeps in touch with the boy and his family. edgar suffered burns to 85% of

swing. abc7 news traffic reporter has an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to put on this time-honored tradition. ♪ >> by now i'm sure you recognize this music, the dance of the sugar plum fairy, which has become synonymous with this christmastime. in the studios at the san francisco ballet, they are making final touches to the nutcracker. as dancers perfect every move, audiences will soon be able to marvel at the fluttering snowflakes and follicking flowers, the prince and, of course, the sugar plum fairy. the nutcracker is not only a staple of revenue for balett companies around the world, it's often the first large production young dancers learn and perform. >> nutcracker is a very internal -- special time of the year. this is how i began and this is how they are beginning. >> every professional dancer

begins here at the bar. it takes a lot of practice to get to the stage. but to prepare for something like the nutcracker, it takes six hours a day, six days a week, for up to one and a half months out of the year. >> vanessa has been with san francisco ballet since 1997. she's been dancing sugar plum ever since. >> every time i do it, it's a new beginning. i say that because i find something new in the role. >> the idea of attending a performance might feel a little intimidating for some. for the company's artistic director-- >> i would say to people who aren't familiar with ballet, you don't have to understand when we call the technique. it's a dance. everybody loves to dance. >> from the studios at the san francisco ballet, abc7 news. . place a little bit of history. the san francisco ballet was the

first american dance company to stage it back in 1944 in the war memorial opera house. people are expected to take part in the 114th christmas bird count. the audubon society is organizing two counts today in oakley and berkeley. workers will fan out within a 15-mile radius to count every species, as well as individual birds, within a 24 hour period. they will hold another bird count in san francisco on november 27th. it helps track bird population trends. >> they will be doing that with hazy whether. is this a spare-the-air day? >> it is. it's the eighth one. it is very nasty. >> yes. and as we go through the rest of the day today, it's going to be pretty mild out there. starting out winter time, ending springtime. but the official beginning of the winter solstice is next saturday. so the days are getting shorter.

it's going to feel really like not the season today, especially tomorrow. live doppler 7hd not picking up the clouds, but take a look at our roof camera. you can see out there that it's very, very hazy with san francisco sitting at 47 degrees. redwood city still chilly at 35. half moon bay up another degree at 55 degrees. we have offshore winds and they are really making an impact on the coast. san jose 40. here's a look at mt. tam. and up in the north bay, once again, the poor air quality, 36 petaluma. you were down to 27. 38 in fairfield. still chilly in the east bay. not out of the 30s yet. it was right around freezing in concord earlier this morning. but relatively speaking, most of the overnight lows have been much warmer or a little bit warmer than we've been last week. but here's our sutro tower. you will notice that with the sunshine and haze, it is a spare the airdy today. it will be warmer. everyone in the 60s today. and even though we are going to

begin to see the cool-down head our way tuesday, we are still above average. the warmest day, though, will be monday. widespread 70s tomorrow. and from our san jose camera, lots of sunshine there. but once again, the santa clara valley and the inland east bay looking at poor air quality. a little bit better elsewhere, but not great. we need some wind. we need a weather maker to come on through and give us another parcel of air because this one is just stagnate sitting over the air for the past several weeks. we do have also a beach hazard. so despite the mild temperatures, dangerous to head out to the shore here with the large westerly swell not only today but tomorrow. especially around ocean beach. be careful out there. here's a look what we can expect for the short term. high pressure to the west of us but high pressure to the east of us dominating our weather. keeping the storm track to the north and giving us the light offshore flow. upper elevation may see 15 to

>> if you were in san francisco's union square yesterday you saw santa here and santa there and more santas. all part of this year's santa-con. clouds of clauses are making their way through the city, stopping at various better along the way that offers santas free drinks. it's been known to put some of the participants on santa's naughty list. while the mood seemed relaxed and fun, the annual bar crawl has created some criticism. police in new york city urged bar owners not to participate in the event this rudolf the red nose reindeer is collecting blankets for the homeless in portland, oregon. this man build a giant reindeer and put it in a parking lot with a sign asking people to donate blankets for the homeless. and it is working. people have been dropping off more than just blankets,

>> welcome back. let's kickoff this half-hour with a quick look at the whether with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. a little bit of wind from the higher elevations. another spare the air. and from mt. tam we are looking at temperatures that are beginning to get out of the 30s, from petaluma and fairfield. santa rosa is at 41. a little patchy fog in the south bay. poor air quality, as well. everyone will be well into the 60s today, in fact mid-60s around the east bay and around the coast. half moon bay, you are already at 54 in hand. you will see numbers once again in the 60s, as well. warmer weather on the way before a dramatic cool down. details in a minute. >> what about weather elsewhere? two storms are coming together at one, bringing a blast of

winter across nearly two dozen states. rob nelson has the story from massachusetts. >> a huge swath of the country bracing for a snow-covered weekend as this huge weather system makes its eastward trek, dumping anywhere from a few inches to a few feet. some one thousand flights cancelled throughout the country. but better to be stuck on a frozen tarmac than on the roads with deadly conditions. many of the nation's roads will once again become treacherous, there's been at least three massive multi-car wrecks this past weekend alone. a 40-car pileup in michigan, including two police vehicles, blamed on snow and speed. >> thank god my daughter and i are okay. >> frustration and relief. >> he just side swept me and kept on going. >> further east in new hampshire, firemen had to fight fire with ice, dousing this blaze, but leaving behind walls of ice just minutes later. in the snowbelt of western new york where people are used to this, motorists said they couldn't see a thing >> it's pretty horrible out there right now.

i have four-wheel drive on my car and it's been slipping, so this is pretty surprising. on my way here you couldn't see the road. >> with christmas a little more than a week away, holiday shoppers trying to battle the bad weather and trying it finish their gift lists. with the storm getting closer we decided to hit the road ourselves to check on conditions. travel slow but steady. the roads getting slightly are worse as we reached massachusetts. we are among the lucky. every year more than 1300 people are killed and nearly 117,000 injured in snow-related crashes. >> rob nelson mentioned the affect on air travel. right now logan airport is the only one with delays due to storm and ice. the storm is not having a major impact on bay area airports. yesterday there were some storm related cancellations. you see it there, 11 in all. 7 arriving flights and 4

departing flights. this morning a.c. transit riders are seeing major route changes. they are adding more than 15,000 hours of bus service system-wide. they will affect more than 50 bus lines from fremont to richmond. it's changing the routing of some lines, adding new ones, and eliminating others like shopper shuttles that have low ridership. fremont and newark will see the biggest improvements after years of service cuts. the route changes come as contract talks are scheduled to continue tomorrow between a.c. transit and the union representing bus drivers and mechanics. members of the union have boycotted driver sign-ups for both the new and existing bus routes. they say the changes violate the terms of the cooling-off period set to expire one week from today. tomorrow the city of san rafael will consider whether to raise garbage and recycling rates. our media partner reports the city council will review the

maximum rate they can charge customers in san rafael for trash, recycling and composting services. the proposed rate increase for next year is just over 5.5%. >> google confirms it has bought boston dynamics. that's a company that builds robotic devices for the pentagon. boston dynamics mass invented this dog-looking device, as well as one that resembles humans. mountain view-based google is not saying why they acquired the company. the new york times says the purchase is a clear indicator google is planning to build a new class of autonomous systems that might do anything from mail sorting to elderly care. local food banks serve more than 6,000 people in the by area every month. that means one out of every six

that's what an offshore flow will do even in the winter time but it's in the winter time we get the stagnate air. and from mt. tam you see a little bit of the trees moving, but more noticeable is the hazy conditions. 38 in fairfield. finally out of the mid-30s for you in livermore and concord. climbing to near 40 degrees. this is the picture i was saving. our east bay hills camera where you can barely see the city. so from high above you really see what we are breathing in down here. that's why another, the eighth, spare the air day today. we need more wind, we need just a new parcel of air to push this one out, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen in the short term. but we will switch things up by the middle to the end of the week as our mild pattern goes away and much cooler air, well below normal temperatures, head our way with just a slight chance of a shower. so here's a look, it's causing all the problems, a double barrel high pressure, keeping a lid on the atmosphere. we get the down-sloping winds

with the off-shore flow and that's trapping the pollutants close to the surface. with that we have the unhealthy air, illegal to burn, and temperatures coming up another 4 degrees today. the peak heat comes tomorrow with widespread 70s. even though we are starting out in the teens in the sierra nevada, look at the high temperatures in the northern sierra. 55 there. 60 near yosemite. looking at high fire danger with low 80s forecasted for monday in los angeles. 78 today. we will look how warm it's going to get in the south bay with temperatures near 70 for tomorrow. and tuesday it will still be mild, but parts of the by will begin to feel that breeze on tuesday. so we will have some parts of the by drop on tuesday, but a more dramatic drop come thursday with highs just in the 50s. we will recover out of that cold spell, as well. but right now today here we have the haze with the spare the air. a few high clouds. low to mid-60s.
