making news in america this morning -- bad timing. extreme weather, making its way across the country during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. what does it mean for all of the last-minute packages that you're waiting for? show-stopper. a ceiling collapses inside a crowded theater. dozens were hurt. this morning, people inside were talking about the moment everything came crashing down. feathers ruffled. the suspension of a "duck dynasty" growing more contentious overnight. the family makes a threat that no fan of the show wants to hear. tag-team heroes. two teachers jump into action and rescue a bus full of students. this morning, new video of their heroic actions. good friday morning.

we begin with severe weather threatening to disrupt a lot of holiday plans. >> slick roads are already being blamed for two serious bus crashes in california. it's a deadly start to a busy weekend of traveling and holiday preparations. abc's devin dwyer has more. >> reporter: a deadly start to the holiday travel weekend. two tour buses loaded with passengers overturned on the same rain-slicked california highway. >> passengers onboard had to break out of those emergency exits on the roof of the bus to get out and through that front wind screen. >> reporter: this crash in corona left 30 people injured. and almost at the same time, 50 miles away, another bus skidded out of control and rolled over. >> our guys got here and found one fatality. 60 serious and 13 delayed or minor injuries. >> reporter: both accidents are under investigation. but authorities say wet, winter weather was likely a factor. new storm fronts are sweeping across the country just in time for christmas.

they'll bring snow and ice into the pacific northwest. then push east, making a cold, messy weekend in the middle of the country. >> waiting for a very long time. and i'm so happy that it's here. >> it is snowing. and it is beautiful. >> reporter: good news for snow lovers. but bad news for travelers and those last-minute deliveries. the storm socked in the salt lake city airport. in wyoming, blizzard conditions on the roads. shippers u.p.s. and fedex have been preparing for the storm since last week. rerouting thousands of packages and adding deicers for planes. >> we have all 330,000 team members out delivering and picking up packages this week. >> reporter: an army of santa's helpers to make sure millions of gifts arrive on time. if you're hoping for a white christmas, your best bet is in the midwest. from st. louis to chicago, to detroit. in the northeast, record warm air this weekend means much of the snow here won't last. devin dwyer, abc news, washington. well, your gifts may arrive on time. but you may not. the forecast for this last weekend before christmas isn't good for much of the country.

>> accuweather meteorologist jim dickey, keeping an eye on it for us. jim? >> good morning, john and diana. dealing with a bit of a mess here across much of the northeast into the midwest. today, frontal boundary strung out. cold air to the north, warmth being drawn from the south. many spots, in the 40s and 50s ahead of this system. we'll see snow in northern new england. an area of ice between. that stretches back across the lakes. this really gets going into the weekend, though. looking for disruptive snow from the lakes, back on into the plains, with severe weather in the deep south. john and diana, back to you. >> all right, jim. thank you. our other big story, still unfolding in london, where a performance at one of the city's famous theaters ended in chaos last night. >> part of the ceiling came crashing down on the audience. and we're getting a first glimpse inside. plaster, dust and splintered wood all over the seats. and part of the balcony, gone. abc's marcy gonzalez has the dramatic story. >> reporter: an intense rescue effort inside a theater in london's west end. >> an area about ten-square meters of the plaster ceiling

has fallen into the auditorium on top of the audience. >> reporter: part of the ceiling collapsing during a play, crumbling on to some of the more than 700 people seated in the audience below. >> and we heard a creek. and then, the ceiling, which is plaster or something, just slowly -- and the whole thing collapsed. just suddenly like that. and you couldn't see anything. >> this massive crash. and massive section of it came down. the room filled with dust straight away. >> reporter: dozens of people hurt. some seriously. >> got a large number of casualties. many of them are walking wounded who have been rescued by firefighters, paramedics and police officers. and are currently being treated and taken to hospitals in the area. >> reporter: several reportedly trapped in the rubble of the more than 100-year-old apollo theater and quickly rescued. >> police arrived and the ambulance. and fire crews, within five minutes, everybody was there. >> reporter: eyewitnesses and first responders describing the scene as chaotic. a triage center set up in a

neighboring theater, as ambulances began rushing the most seriously wounded to nearby hospitals. investigators still trying to determine what caused this terrifying collapse. looking into whether lightning may have struck the building. john and diana? >> marci, thank you. we should learn more today about the overnight crash of a small plane at tampa international airport. emergency crews raced to the scene after the plane came down around midnight. it's believed the plane almost hit the roof of a nearby gas station before crashing. air traffic control recordings describe the scene. >> it's hard to tell from this point. it looks like the aircraft landed short of runway 19, right in the grass. >> there is a fire. aircraft is on the ground. there is a fire. he is short of the runway. >> the recordings also indicate the pilot survived the crash. the crash is under investigation. if you're one of the millions of americans who health insurance policies have been canceled, you're getting some help. the administration says you can buy a bare-bones plan and won't be subject to penalties if you

don't have any coverage next year. the latest tweak to the affordable care act was announced last night, just four days before the deadline. and the senate approved a comprehensive defense bill last night, sending it to the president for his signature. the bill authorizes $663 billion for national defense spending and will keep the guantanamo bay prison open. but it also enacts historic reforms on how the military handles sexual assault. but it does not take those cases out of the chain of command. a new report explains why the air force general in charge of u.s. nuclear missiles was fired. investigators say major general michael carey acted badly during an official trip to russia in july. among the infractions, heavy drinking, rudeness and associating with so-called suspect women. when questioned, carey reportedly couldn't remember portions of what happened there. and in another case of misbehaving, florida congressman trey radel is out of rehab and will stay in office.

he pleaded guilty last month to possession of cocaine and was ordered to get treatment. he says he has no plans to step down. but on monday, the house ethics committee said it plans to look into whether radel violated rules of conduct. new mexico, now the 17th state where same-sex marriages are legal. the state supreme court says the right to marry is protected by the state constitution. more than 1,400 same-sex marriages were performed in the last two months while the court considered the issue. dennis rodman had had a busy friday in north korea. he held a tryout for local basketball players who are scheduled to take on a team of nba veterans next month. he smoked a cigar courtside. the game they're getting ready for is supposed to be played on north korean leader kim jong-un's birthday. he is expected to be in north korea through the weekend. still ahead, target's massive credit card breach. what experts are saying you should do if you shopped there recently. new twist in the "duck dynasty" controversy. the family now saying the show might have to end.

i've had that done myself. they will pick up the phone and call your mobile, your home land line and say suspicious activity. confirm if this is you or not you. >> the data came from nearly all of the target stores but not from its website. some say target should have spotted the breach sooner. and it's likely the thieves will never be caught. united airlines has quietly changed its policy on child passengers that travel alone. the company will allow children 5 to 11 to ply alone on nonstop fights. it has services for minors ages 12 to 17. the changes came into effect two weeks ago. they're similar to policies at u.s. airways and southwest. mcdonald's is in a flap over a flop. the chain ordered too many chicken wings for a promotion this fall. and has about 10 million pounds of wings leftover. local franchises complained that the wings were priced too high and they were too spicy.

welcome back. this last, full day of fall begins with icy surfaces in upstate new york, new england and the upper midwest. roads will be wet in the low midwest. and there will be snow on highways in the pacific northwest. >> it is a busy travel day with airport delays possible in dallas, chicago, detroit, memphis and seattle. and back to the news now. and some turbulence ahead for "duck dynasty." >> as you know, a&e suspended the family patriarch for remarks he made about gay and black people. overnight, the family issued a statement saying, quote, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. we're in discussions with a&e to

see what that means for the future of "duck dynasty." supporters are speaking up. a facebook page calling for a boycott if robertson isn't reinstated has a million likes. sarah palin and louisiana governor, bobby jindal, have also objected to the suspension. u.s. marshals have tracked down a fugitive on the run for 36 years. kathleen regina huff was indicted in texas for trying to kill her common law husband. cold case investigators found her living in a detroit suburb. she had moved to seattle and then michigan, and married and changed her last name. she will be sent back to texas. a school field trip would have ended in disaster if it weren't for two hero teachers. the driver fell out of the seat while making a left turn. one teacher had to grab the wheel and struggled to keep the bus from slipping into a ditch. but the driver was so in the way, another teacher climbed over him and was able to slam on the brakes. no one was hurt. the driver is out of a job. ryan o'neal can keep the

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. good friday morning at 4:28. >> the last friday before christmas. i am eric thomas. mike, how is the weather for the shopping? >> thank's for the panic attack. wind. we will talk about that. they are not so fast as this time yesterday. or will they be in the afternoon. we are calm or up to six miles per hour, light to variable wind. you know the high pressure is back. it will bring clear morning from sutro tower. a lot of sunshine. a few passing high clouds. temperatures the same if not warmer than yesterday with mid-to-upper 50's at the coast and upper 50's to low 60's at the bay and upper 50 to mid-60's inland.

do we have friday lite traffic? >> we do not have any accidents to get to but we have construction that will last until 6:00 this morning, eastbound highway 4 to a street most of the traffic is headed in the westbound direction and you will find detours here, the rest of the drive is 15 minutes if you need to head out of antioch to concord. drive time traffic 680 southbound from walnut creek to dublin is 15 minutes and 101 from santa rosa to san francisco is 51 minutes. it is chilly there and along 17. through the santa cruz mountains it is 4 minutes to los gatos. >> today the family of an oakland girl who is brain dead after routine surgery will take an important legal step to keep her on life support. they had an emotional meeting with hospital officials. katie marzullo is in the newsroom. >> the attorney for the family will be in court this morning

filing an injunction to prevent children's hospital from taking jahi mcmath off of life support after the family met with hospital officials and her mother talked with us after the meeting. >> we have no right, you do not have my permission whatever to take her off. >> strong words for the hospital. she shared with us the new picture of jahi mcmath holding her mother's hand. the family is standing guard at her bedside. the mother says that she asked the hospital to keep jahi mcmath on the ventilator through christmas. the hospital administrator told her they want this done quickly. the family wants an independent doctor to examine jahi mcmath and her medical records. the attorney says the hospital will not allow either. the 13-year-old has on life support since last week when she was in cardiac arrest after tonsil surgery. the hospital cannot defend itself. official are not allowed to speak because the family has nt
